I Turn The Heavens Down
"If the devil came for you. I'd rather go through hell or high waters. Yeah, it's true.
If I die tonight at least I left a legacy."
-Fefe Dobson, "Legacy."

The moment Rosalie passed the turnoff that led to the Cullen's private driveway in favor of continuing down the highway, reality started to set in for Bella and so did the adrenaline.
"Uh Rose, where are we going?" She asked nervously from the passenger seat.
"We're running away."
Bella looked at Rosalie's wide smirk and excited eyes. Was Rosalie serious? "Wait, really? Why? We can't." Bella laughed at the absurdity.
"Why not?" Rosalie pushed back as her foot pushed down on the gas pedal. Bella could feel the engine slide easily into a higher gear. "What's really stopping us from starting our lives together now. You're human Bella, right now your heart is beating, and you can still enjoy all the things you might miss while being a vampire."
Rosalie's voice grew more passionate as she spoke. Her hold on Bella's hand was like Bella was the only thing keeping her tethered to earth.
"We can go to New York and only see the Empire State Building from our suite's balcony because you're so drunk on sleep and room service that we don't care to leave the room."
"We can fly to Paris so that you can feast on the art and food of the city. Engorge yourself in the culture. We can stay out all night in the clubs of Ibiza and you can get drunk and dance and convince me to take you to a tattoo parlor in the French Quarter of New Orleans."
Rosalie took a deep breath. "Why not?"
"What about school? We have no clothes…what about keeping a low profile in Forks? And what about your family? What if Charlie causes a scene?" Bella asked in rapid fire.
Rosalie laughed. "Fuck school. Fuck Forks. And fuck Charlie. Our family will be fine, and they'll deal with it. We're both of age." She laughed quickly at her joke. "What can they really do? I will buy you everything you want, and we can go wherever you want."
Bella's heart raced at the romantic nature of her words. But could they really just leave? "Bella?"
"Yeah?"
They locked eyes, then Rosalie asked, "Do you want to go back?"
No. Bella didn't want to go back. Rosalie was looking at her with fire behind her eyes and Bella felt excited for the unknown. Hadn't she always wanted to pack up and just leave?
Bella smiled softly at the thought and relaxed back into the seat. "No."
Rosalie winked at her and turned back to the road. Her hand held Bella's in her lap and it made Bella feel safe.
They were doing it. Running. It would just be them against the world. Bella wasn't going to have to worry about Charlie or go back to that awful house. She'd be free. And at the end of it, she'd have Rosalie forever.
Her heart rose and took home in her throat as she thought about it. This is everything Bella had been wanting since being under Charlie's roof. But now Bella knew she wouldn't be alone.
"Where to first?" Bella asked. With a whole world of options to choose from, she was at a loss.
Rosalie's smile was genuine and soft when she answered. "New York is magical in the fall."
Bella's heart melted. Rosalie wanted to take Bella to where it all started, to Rosalie's home. "New York sounds amazing."
"New York." Rosalie repeated, her warm voice coating the words and making them sound like a promise. Something cemented into place inside Bella's heart, or rather a piece of Rosalie had cemented itself there.
Bella could feel the blonde in her ventricles as her heart pumped Rosalie drunk blood throughout her body.
Rosalie is her mate. She's Bella's forever. Why not start now? Haven't they wasted enough time?
When they pulled up to the Airport's main entrance, Alice, Carlisle and Esme were waiting on the curb by drop off. When Bella looked at Rosalie questioningly the blonde just shrugged and said, "They wanted to send us off and take the car back. Vampire speed, Bella." She chuckled.
Bella nodded and unbuckled her seatbelt as Rosalie parked the car and put her hazard lights on. The moment Bella's feet hit the sidewalk she was swept up in a hug by Alice. Bella felt suddenly emotional. She really felt like she was saying goodbye to her best friend, her future sister. Bella tightened her arms around Alice as tight as she could knowing she couldn't hurt the smaller girl. Alice squealed in delight in her ear.
When Alice set her down, they were both grinning from ear to ear. "I'll call you as soon as we land." Bella promised.
Alice just giggled and bobbed her head. "I know."
Bella smiled wider; her eyes started watering, but it was from happiness. "I'll take lots of pictures and we'll talk about everything in excruciating detail when we get back."
Alice squeezed their still joined hands. "I know!" They shared another quick hug then Bella was passed to an awaiting Esme and Carlisle while Alice went to Rosalie.
Esme hugged her tightly and Bella closed her eyes and soaked up the motherly comfort. When Esme pulled back Bella had a few tears running down her face and Esme's eyes were misty with tears that could never fall.
"I expect the two of you home by Thanksgiving. Remember to wear a coat if it's too cold, drink plenty of water if you plan to drink alcohol, and make sure Rosalie remembers to feed you."
Bella couldn't help laughing at Rosalie's offended 'Hey!' in the background, but she stayed focused on Esme. "I promise."
Esme cupped her cheek dearly. "And for god's sake do not elope!"
Bella choked on the air in her lungs at the mere suggestion. She hadn't even kissed Rosalie properly yet. But then she took a moment to really think about it…could she really put it past them that they might get carried away and just elope? No, Bella couldn't say that. It sounded like the exact thing Bella and Rosalie would do.
"We won't." She promised, her face bright red as Esme gave her a disbelieving look.
"They won't!" Alice called from behind and it seemed to appease Esme.
Carlisle laughed and stepped forward to offer Bella a hug as well. Bella welcomed it and stepped into his arms. Carlisle squeezed her lightly and when she stepped back, he smiled kindly at her.
"Before you go, there's something Esme and I want you to know, Bella. When you come back home, we'd like you to move in with us, permanently. You are our family, we love you more than you know, and we want you with us. So, if you'll let us, we'd like to make a room for you at the house."
Bella was stunned with overwhelming emotion as they looked at her with hope and love. So, she nodded. "Yes, yes, thank you."
The two pulled her into a group hug. "No, thank you, Bella." Carlisle whispered as he and Esme let go of her and gently pushed her in Rosalie's direction.
Rosalie was standing by the entrance with a small carry-on bag and a stunning smile. When Bella got close enough their hands locked together as if they were magnetically charged. Rosalie kisses the side of Bella's head as they wave the red BMW off.
When they're alone again, Bella speaks up. "I want to buy the tickets."
Rosalie raised an eyebrow as if she was insulted by the thought. "What makes you think I'm going to let you pay for anything?"
Bella grinned back with a small chuckle. "Rosalie, I have twenty grand in the bank that I've been saving for this. I want to buy the tickets, I'll save the rest for something else, but I want to do this. Besides, it'll be the best fuck you to Charlie that I can think of. His dad, my grandpa, he's the one that left it to me."
Rosalie smirked then, "Fine, but I want first class."
Bella laughed as Rosalie started to strut away. Bella ran and caught up just as the glass doors swooshed open. "Of course, anything for my Goddess."
Rosalie snaked her arm over Bella's middle and pulled her in close. "Is that your way of saying that you've finally fallen for me oh mortal of mine?" She purred in Bella's ear.
Bella swallowed deeply as she locked eyes with Rosalie as she pulled back with a teasing smirk. Bella could see the challenge there, daring Bella to try and deny it.
A spark of pride lit within Bella. "I couldn't let you fall by yourself, that would have been rude."
Rosalie scoffed and Bella giggled. They didn't have a care in the world as they walked into a new adventure together.
Word spread like wildfire throughout Forks and the town's gossips were having a field day. The one-horse town hadn't been known for anything before, but after this, the two girls would be the stars of Fork's very own Romeo and Juliet love story.
The quiet daughter of the, supposedly homophobic, Police Chief runs off with the rich, attitude riddled daughter of the new surgeon in town. Everyone was talking about it and once it reached the school, Angela and Jessica couldn't help but to add to the fire, especially given their last conversation with Bella.
"Charlie Swan definitely wins the worst dad of the year reward. I heard he's a drinker too." Jessica said to Lauren in passing.
"He totally ignored Bella before he found out about her dating Rosalie. Can you believe how hard that must have been for her to live with a homophobe?" Angela whispered to Mike in the lunchroom.
Edythe wanted to laugh at some of the scenarios she had overheard.
'Turns out Chief Swan's a drinker and runs his only daughter out of town.'
"I can't believe two teenage girls would just run off like that. Kids these days.'
'I always knew there was something wrong with Charlie Swan.'
'Guess you really don't know your neighbors.'
'God, it's so romantic!'
The thoughts went on and on, and though all the gossip had originally worried Edythe, she didn't want the family exposed because of her sisters' impulsivity. But it seemed most of the town's focus was on Charlie and what he'd done. When the Cullen name came up, it was only ever in a positive way.
Edythe wanted to laugh. Charlie wasn't exactly the worst person on earth, but if Edythe had met him when she had her rebellious phase, she would have drained the man, so in her mind he was getting everything he deserved.
People were whispering behind his back and giving him looks on the street. A few of Bella's human friends went to his house in the middle of the night and egged his police car. Edythe wanted to thank Jessica for that. Even Charlie's so-called buddies were ignoring his phone calls and canceling plans.
Charlie was finally getting a taste of what it felt like to be shunned, to feel unwanted and ignored.
Edythe was happy to stick around Forks just to watch the man suffer. She always said she hated the drama, but secretly she couldn't wait for how the town reacted upon Rosalie and Bella's return. Besides, as long as there wasn't any suspicion being thrown in the Cullens direction, they were safe and could leave when Bella was ready to.
Charlie sat in the darkness of the house. A bottle of cheap vodka was clasped in one of his hands and he sat there slowly drinking it empty. The white death grip he'd kept on his secrets was slowly loosening and there was nothing he could do about it.
Somewhere along the line he had made a deadly error and let his mask slip. He was losing respect at work, in the town. People were starting to see him for what he truly was. A pitiful excuse of a man. A drunk. Someone who couldn't even control his own daughter.
And the Cullens.
He took another heavy drink from the bottle. It was Cullen's fault. Everything had been fine until they got to town. If they hadn't shown up then Bella would still be here, cleaning up after his messes. No one would know about his drinking or his failures as a father.
Charlie gritted his teeth as something ugly started to grow inside of him.
Renee left him. His own father had disliked him. Now Bella's left him. He's all alone in his despair. How dare they do this to him. He didn't deserve it. He should be the one with a good life. He should have a family. Why was everyone so quick to just abandon him?
The sound of the liquor bottle smashing against the wall was covered up by the storm outside. Inside, Charlie glared at the wall, mad at the world and wanting to spread his pain around.
Alice danced around the empty room with a roll full of paint swatches. She was entirely too excited that things were finally moving along as she had once seen.
The subjectiveness of her visions always bugged her, in the end people were fickle, but the one certainty of her vision had remained true; Bella was meant to join their family, to be with Rosalie, as a Vampire.
It was a comforting thought when dealing with the unknown variable known as Charlie. Alice knew Carlisle and the family took pride in the animal diet and the 'all life is precious' stuff, but if it had been up to Alice or Jasper, they would have killed him already.
Bella might not forgive them though, and they weren't going to risk that. The only thing Alice could do was keep a close eye on Charlie and any visions about him. He's drinking again which makes things harder but not impossible.
Alice held up the light lilac switch next to a bluish lavender and squinted her eyes in thought. She was desperate to get Bella's room right and Esme had been kind enough to let her help.
Alice lost focus as she felt herself slip into the fog of a vision. Her hands let go of the roll of swatches and they land with a soft plop on the hardwood floor.
Rosalie and Bella are driving up the driveway. They park. Everyone is happy to see them.
Esme and Bella hugging. Bella gets ushered upstairs. The room is painted pale purple, with carbon grey accents. Bella and Alice happily embrace.
Fades out.
It fades back in, and Rosalie is helping Bella pack things from Charlie's house. The vision zooms in on the calendar. Friday, November 26th.
They're happy.
It fades out again and then when it comes back it's Charlie arguing with a man in a police uniform. Charlie angrily getting in his car. Now he's screeching into the driveway.
Rosalie's car is there. Now he's storing upstairs. Bella's door gets kicked in.
Bang!
The vision ends.
Alice gasps as Edythe appears in front of her. Alice's eyes are wide as she plays the vision over and over again so that she and Edythe can dissect it.
Then Alice looks into a future where the Cullens pick Bella's stuff up before the women get home and things end just as badly.
"What are we going to do? Do we call Rosalie?" Alice whispered, luckily, they were the only two in the house.
Edythe frowned and then shook her head. "Not yet, let them be happy for now. When the others get back, we'll tell them what you saw and try to work it out." Then Edythe winced as she thought of something. "I really don't want to be the one to tell, Rosalie."
Alice glared, "Well I'm not doing it by myself!"
Edythe sighed and rolled her eyes, "Let's just wait for Carlisle and Esme, they'll know how to handle this."
Alice nodded, and she tried to feel better about it in her gut, but no matter how many times she looked into the future, she saw some kind of incident involving Bella and Charlie.
Great. Rosalie was going to be thrilled.
