Chapter Four

"You actually told her?" Geto asked, surprise seeping into his voice. Shoko glanced up at him and nodded, unbothered by it all.

"Yeah," she stated. "Not that she believed it or anything," she continued. "It's no wonder he's going crazy at this point."

Geto couldn't help but chuckle at her comment. "Kagome's level of obliviousness is certainly something," he mused. "I don't think he could get any more obvious with it unless he spelled it out for her."

"Nah," Shoko shook her head. Geto looked at her curiously. "I don't think she'd believe him even if he told her straight to her face," she said. "He's always teasing her. Knowing how he usually is, she'd probably just treat it as if he was messing with her."

Geto couldn't deny that line of thought. He sighed and shook his head. "He's hopeless at this point, isn't he?"

Shoko shrugged. "On his own, yes," she remarked in a flat tone.

"... Still, what a cheap shot when we've got a bet going on," Geto remarked, crossing his arms against his chest as he half-heartedly glared at her. "You're not exactly playing fair, are you?"

She tossed her hands up beside her head with a noise of disagreement. "Fair? As if," she countered. "I'm playing it smart here."

The concerned look fixed on her face was hard to ignore. Admittedly, the scrunch of her brow and the downturned curve of her lips was far more cute than it should've been, considering something seemed to be bothering her.

Just as he was about to call her out on it, Kagome abruptly turned and started heading down the hallway. The suddenness of it caused him to automatically swap up his pace as he turned and followed right after her. Despite being so quick, she was still easy to catch up to. He'd closed the gap in a few long strides, and his hand curled around her wrist to tug her to a brief halt. Only then, did she seem to take notice of his presence.

Frankly, he didn't know if he should be offended that she'd looked over him so easily or concerned that something seemed to bother her so badly that she did, so he settled on doing both simultaneously.

"What's with that worried look?" Gojo asked. Kagome looked up at his face briefly before glancing down at his wrist. She gave a tug, a silent plea for him to let her go, and he reluctantly conceded after a few seconds. He shoved his hand back in his pocket as he ignored the urge to take her hand in his own.

Kagome shook her head and sighed. "My mom called earlier and told me something strange is going on with the well," she said, folding her arms over her chest as she tapped the tip of her shoe against the floor. "Considering the turbulent history it has, I was going to head back and check it out on my own." She really didn't want to leave it alone if it was becoming active again. Who knew what sort of things could come through it if it allowed them… "It can't be left unchecked, and I was going to strengthen the seal I put on it. Or maybe put a new one on it, depending on the state of my first one."

Upon processing her explanation, he nodded. Not even a second later, he set a hand to his chest. "Let me go with you."

The words had come out in a hurry, and she sent him a look of blatant confusion. "Huh? What for?" she asked.

He was quiet for a beat longer this time before he sent her a charming smile. "What if you need help? I humbly volunteer-"

"There's nothing humble about you," she cut him off with a deadpan look that shut him up. She sent him a mild glare. "Are you trying to joke that I'm weak or something?" she asked. "I'm more than capable of handling the well on my own. After all, I know it better than anyone else at this point. I don't need help."

He held his hands up in a peaceful gesture in response to her comments, and he swiftly shook his head. "I'm not implying you're weak or anything," he said, trying to diffuse the ire his words seemed to have stirred within her. "Look, I think we both know what I'm going to do here," he said, a grin breaking across his face when he caught her exasperated expression. "Either you say yes and let me come with you, or I just follow you anyway and bother you the whole way."

Kagome's brow twitched in clear annoyance. A moment later she sighed and turned on her heel. "Ugh! Fine!"

"Thank you for seeing it my way~" he leaned over her shoulder as his grin grew a fraction wider.

The old well in front of him didn't look like much, but looks were often deceiving. He'd been told a few separate times of Kagome's experiences with it, and he knew just how dangerous something like the well could be if left to work as it so chose.

He hung back, leaning against the wall as he watched her focus on the well. She broke the seal she'd put on it before and replaced it with a stronger one. In the aftermath, the entire well house seemed to swell with her energy.

It was warm and calming. He could spend an eternity surrounded by it and still never get tired of feeling it.

"So you got dragged down this thing?" Gojo asked after a moment, and she nodded, a grimace passing over her face at the memory alone.

"Yeah…" she muttered, resting her hands on her hips as she cleared the unpleasant memory from her mind. Just the thought of Mistress Centipede made her skin crawl. "Far from a pleasant experience, but… I guess after a while, it wasn't so bad when I got used to it," she sighed.

Really, it wasn't so bad when she was doing it of her own volition.

She glanced at the well, a faint scratching sound catching her attention. For a moment, she thought back to her very first experience in going into the past, and she found herself giving the well a skeptical look.

After all, what were the odds of something like that happening to her a second time? It had to be low… right?

She took a few steps closer to the well as she listened for the sound. The scratching grew louder, and her brows furrowed as she wondered where it was coming from. There was no warning before a bucket beside the well clattered noisily on the ground.

It caused her to hastily jump back, a scream falling from her lips. "Kya!" Without meaning to, she'd latched onto one of Gojo's arms as she ducked somewhat behind him- unwilling to get dragged down the well for a second time in her life. After a moment, a calico cat trotted out from behind the well with a few patches of dust on his fur, and a flush of red dyed her cheeks. "Buyo!" she hissed at the cat, dragging Gojo's arm tighter to her chest. "Stop going back there you little-!"

It was in that moment that she became aware of how she clung to his arm, and she loosened her grip as she tried to wedge some space between them in the damp, dark shed. In her hasty movements, her foot stepped on something round, and it rolled under her weight. Her balance grew unsteady as she fell forward, her face landing directly against his chest. She froze, feeling as his hands went to land on her back and hip.

She stayed as she was for a few long seconds, hesitating in making any more movements. After a moment, she tried to push herself back, but his grip remained steady on her. "Uhm… do you mind…-?"

"Hm?" Gojo glanced down at her, only a sliver of light peering in through the cracked door illuminating his face. "I think I do, actually," he stated. "You happen to fit so perfectly in my arms, I don't think I want to let go just yet."

The red flush on her face grew more vibrant, and she'd never been more grateful to have his towering frame to block the light from hitting her and drawing more attention to her cherry-red cheeks. "I'm serious-" she muttered, pushing at his chest as she tried to regain her balance on her own feet. "Look, I'm really not in the mood for you to be teasing-"

"Teasing?" Gojo repeated that word with a faint laugh. "Who said I'm teasing you? I'm being very serious right now."

Any response she was able to think up was forgotten immediately in the face of his response. She felt one of his hands move to lightly cup the side of her face, his thumb dragging gently over her bottom lip.

"In fact, how about I show you just how serious I am-"

"Nee-chan! You're home!"

The door to the well house was abruptly slammed open as Souta appeared in the doorway. By sheer reflex alone, she successfully detached herself from Gojo, shoving him back. Wordlessly, he fell like a tree, his hand landing on the wall behind him just in time to save him from falling into a large collection of artifacts.

"Yeah! I had to come check out something with the well," Kagome said, swiftly blocking the past few minutes entirely from her mind for the time being. Souta looked from her and to the white-haired figure standing with a disgruntled look on his face.

"Who's he?" Souta asked, nodding his head in his direction.

"A classmate who came with me," Kagome responded, glancing at him from the corner of her eye. "That's Satoru."

"Ah… yeah," he muttered, dusting his hands off on the front of his pants. "I'm your sister's… friend." Though he tried, he couldn't fully prevent the frustrations from seeping in his voice as he said those words.

He'd been so close… so close. Why couldn't the kid had waited just five more minutes before bursting through the door? Ugh… talk about rotten timing…

Auroua-chan: Wrapping this chapter up here.

Man, Gojo had gotten so close. Oh well, there's always next time, right? That's entirely dependent on how much longer his control remains intact. It's a miracle it's lasted this long, to be honest.

Anyway, thats it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Please remember to Review, Favorite, and Follow, thank you!
