"Silvally use Multi Attack!" the ghost-type Multi Attack was deflected off Sceptile's arm blade. One final Leaf Blade and it was over. Ash had beaten Gladion.
In full context, this wasn't a big deal. Everyone knew that Gladion taking on Ash for the title of Alola champion was a league technicality. Before the World Coronation Series was every Regions Pokémon League so everyone was more interested in Kiawe and Gladions match yesterday.
It wasn't a close match Noctowl, Lycanroc, and Leavanny had fainted but Sceptile, Incineroar, and Kingler were still standing with none of them particularly damaged.
This meant tomorrow, The World Coordination Series would officially kick off at Manalo Stadium.
Yet this all felt so boring to him.
Don't get Ash wrong he loved Alola. It was the region he spent the most time in as its champion and the place where he had made some of his most personal connections, it felt like home to him more than Palette Town.
But since being crowned World Champion everything felt dull. Since the day he and Pikachu set off on their journey, Ash had the goal of winning the Pokémon league. With that goal completed this last year was a malaise of boring activities, drifting without direction.
There were definitely high points. It was nice being included with the other champions and learning how to navigate being in the public eye from them was an interesting learning experience. Traveling regions to acquire the Mega Stones he passed over until this point was a good way to pass the time.
But these were both islands in an ocean of general nothing.
Speaking of Mega Stone that's what Ash was currently working on that with Sceptile and Charizard.
Of all his Mega-capable Pokémon Heracross and Glalie weren't very interested Gengar seemed content with Gigantamax for now and Pidgeot wanted to train more before going through the process.
Sceptile and Charizard had jumped at the opportunity Sceptile had even learned Breaking Swipe with the help of Noivern and Dragonite.
The pair had been on his rotation more than his other Pokémon, and he was training hard with them to prepare them for Mega Evolution.
With unrestricted access to Manalo Stadium, he was using the evening to train Sceptile's endurance.
It would still be a while until either had a strong enough aura to Mega Evolve safely but Sceptile needed more training than Charizard who had been with Ash longer.
Ash definitely didn't expect to not be alone but there was an unmistakable of another person there.
"Greetings Ash Ketchum" Looker greeted from the stadium's entrance.
Ash hadn't seen him since Unova but he looked the same from then. He had the same gray hair and eyes the same trenchcoat he always wore despite the Alola weather.
"Hey Looker what brings you here"
"I have something to give you on the request of Cynthia" Looker handed him a sketchbook labeled classified information.
Inside was a litany of strange sketches. Some looked like Pokémon drawn from memory with odd spikes and proportions and others looked to be covered in a metallic sheen.
"This was found in the Team Galactic headquarters after the Heatran incident Cynthia suspects it depicts the same Pokémon in books from the Paldea Region.
Paldea.
Ash let the word roll around his tongue. He had heard of the region south of Kalos. Famous for its culture, food, history, and most of all the flair that its trainers were known to put into battles and contests.
"Why would Team Galactic want anything to do with Paldea?"
"We're not sure these drawings are from a pair of old books. But the author has mostly been written off as a madman aside from a few cultist groups"
"Oh ya, Paldea has that strange crater in the middle of it, right?" Ash recalled from some books he had read about the region.
Truth be told he had been thinking about visiting. He was the number one trainer going into the World Coronation Series he had plenty of time to spare, plus trainers would be searching him out not the other way around.
"Yes that's true but so little of it is studied on it that it's hard to separate truth from fiction"
Looker scratched his chin thoughtfully.
"Cynthia wanted you to investigate these activities in the Paldea region"
"Whaaaa! Why would she want me to go?"
Looker smirked "She thinks you need something to put your mind towards something to get you out of you're boredom"
"Wait how did she know about that"
Looker shrugged "Call it intuition she thinks you're for the job"
"What do you say Pikachu?"
"Pika! Pika!" Pikachu gave him a thumbs-up.
"Then it's settled buddy were going to Paldea"
"Excellent" Looker replied "Paldea is famous for the Naranja Academy I'm sure you could get in there before the school year starts"
With that Ash had already set his mind to it.
After the World Coronation Series, he would be on a flight straight to Paldea.
What followed next was a hectic rush of paperwork as Ash spent the night getting himself enrolled in the Naranja Academy.
It was far too late to unroll normally but after a phone call with the director, he was cleared to enter.
"Really, you sure about it?"
"Of course, Mr. Ketchum words can't describe the honor that the top trainer in the world wants to attend our institution"
"Awesome!" Ash shouted nearly hanging up to tell Kukui.
"Hold on I moment I do have one condition"
"Oh sorry about that Mr. Director"
"Please call me Clavell" he chuckled.
"Alright then Clavell what's the condition?"
"Well, all the student dorms are booked so if you want to attend you're going to have to enter as a student teacher"
Ash let the thought roll over in his mind. A teacher? He would make a terrible teacher he was loud and boisterous and loved to follow the beat of his own drum. How would he be able to handle teaching students?
But then again this was his best shot at getting to Paldea and the knowledge of the strange beasts and robots of the book Looker showed him.
He couldn't let them down.
But most of all he couldn't let himself down.
This was his ticket out of the doldrums of the past year a chance to do the one thing he loved above all else.
A new adventure, doing something new, making new friends and Pokémon.
And maybe he would learn something being a student teacher. He never would have guessed attending school and Alola would be educational but it was the most he learned in his life and where he made some of his closest friends.
"Alright then Clavell I'll be on the first flight out of Alola tomorrow"
"Excellent we'll give you more information when you get here"
Clavell hung up the phone and Ash frantically began packing his stuff around Kukui's household ready for Paldea.
...
"Welcome to Paldea Bienvenido a Paldea" the intercom announced as the plane touched down in Mesagoza Paldea's largest city.
Stepping out of the airport Ash was immediately hit by the heat. It was unlike the tropical humidity of Alola but a harsh dry heat that baked the air around him.
Immediately he could see it. The tallest building in the city, Naranja Academy stood proud over the city its century-old metal shining in the sunlight.
"Well Pikachu you ready for a new adventure"
"Pika!" Pikachu hopped on his shoulder to show his support.
"Alright then let's go!" Ash shouted rushing down the street knowing a whole new world awaited him.
