HP Family Magics

By ChupacabraTamer

Still not mine. Thank you JK for letting us play in your sand box. These characters are just too amazing to leave them trapped in the books and movies for all time. Enjoy the ride.

This starts after the Goblet of Fire. Not sure about any parings at this point.

What if Harry got to Gringotts that summer and learned he was emancipated because of the Triwizard Tournament. Donning the Potter family ring he learns about his family magics. Harry will form alliances with groups that he barely met in the books. This is cannon divergent. If something seems different read the previous sentence again.

Chapter 1 – Awakened and Awakenings

Harry woke from a fitful sleep bathed in sweat and shaking. Every time Harry would close his eyes he would see the green flash and watch the life drain from Cedrics eyes. Harry shook his head as tears streaked his face. Even pounding his head with his fists failed to beat the image out of his mind.

"Shut it boy." His uncles voice boomed from down the hall. Like that would help.

Harry sat up on the side of his bed, elbows on his knees and head resting on his hands. He grabbed handfuls of hair and pulled tightly. Maybe the pain would help release the memory although he doubted it. He looked out the window and could just see the starting of dawn on the horizon. He would just sit there until morning.

His eyes closed after a short while and he could feel the sleep trying to settle even as he was sitting on the edge of the bed. Through the haze of exhaustion he heard something scratching at the window. After the third time Harry realized there was an owl at the window. Opening the window a regal brown owl the size of Hedwig entered and perched on the back of the desk chair and looked at Harry expectantly. The Gringotts seal was around the neck of the beautiful bird so Harry knew he was safe to take the letter.

Harry retrieved a couple of owl treats from the bag next to Hedwigs cage and after retrieving the letter offered them to the owl. The owl looked like he wanted to ignore the treats and then finally snatched one out of his hand and took to the air and out the window.

"I guess even Gringotts owls like those treats." Harry said to Hedwig. She didn't look amused and turned her head when Harry offered the other treat to her. "You know you are the only owl for me." Harry tried to placate her. He gently stroked her back a couple of times until she relented and turned and took the treat while only nipping Harrys hand slightly expressing her displeasure.

"Well. No blood no foul. Let's see what Gringotts wants of me. Not sure a letter in the middle of the night could ever be considered a good thing." Harry said to Hedwig. Not that she was even looking at him.

Dear Mr Potter,

I have information you need to hear immediately. I can't say anything more than this as I am not sure our correspondence are getting to your hand. If you are willing a representative of the bank will come to you. All you need to do is place your hand and wand on this letter and say 'I, Harry Potter, allow Gringotts to enter my home.' This will give us permission and allow a hole through any security measures that may have been established around your home.

Sincerely,

A Goblin Friend.

Harry looked at the letter for several minutes. Turning the letter over several time and checking the envelope he found nothing else. Finally deciding he had very little to lose he decided to accept the visitor.

Harry dressed in his school robes and straightening the room a little he was ready. He checked the time and it was half three in the morning.

"Well, here goes nothing Hedwig." He said to his only friend. As he placed his wand on the parchment there was a soft pop behind him. Harry spun around and brought his holly wand to bear on the intruder and stopped. "Dobby. What are you doing here?"

"Dobby watched Master Harry Potter Sir. Dobby not like Goblins come. Dobby not be protect Master Harry Potter Sir if bad Goblins come."

"Bad Goblins. Can't protect me?" Harry puzzled out loud.

Dobby pulled and twisted his ears. Harry could see the pain in the little elves eyes.

"Dobby please stop. Please talk to be. Why can't you protect me and what Bad Goblins?"

"Dobby hears Long Whiskers says Goblins help him. If same Goblin come I not be able to help Harry Potter Sirs." The little elf was almost wailing.

"Sssh Dobby. I will get in trouble." Harry said trying to quiet the elf.

"I silently room. Bad muggles not hear. I is Hogwarts elf. Can't help Harry Potter Sirs without." Dobby stopped and his eyes opened wide and he pulled hard on his ears.

Harry grabbed the little elves hand and pulled them from his ears. Holding Dobbys hands Harry looked at the elf. "You can't help me because you are bonded to Hogwarts?" Dobby nodded yes. "And you feel I need protecting?" Again the little elf nodded and pleaded with his eyes. "How can you protect me?" Harry finally asked.

With a sigh Dobby relaxed. "Is Harry Potter asking Dobby for help?" Harry thought for a full minute and then nodded.

"Yes. Dobby I need your help." Harry said realizing having a magical helper on his side could help him maybe live through all this.

"Dobby help only if bonded." Dobby flinched at the word but didn't pull his hands from Harry.

"I thought you wanted to be free? Why would you want to bond with me?" Harry asked.

"Oh Harry Potter Sirs. I is only wanting not be Malfoy elf. Master Harry Potter would be most bestest master." Dobby said while nodded so hard one of his ears hit Harry on the forehead.

Harry chuckled. It seemed like the first time he had laughed in almost a year.

"Hermione said that bonding a house elf is slavery." Harry said. Dobby shook his head.

"Mistress Hermione not understand. Elves get magics from master. Master get help. It a simbols thing." Dobby said.

"Symbiotic maybe?" Harry said. Dobby nodded.

"Elfs gets magics so we's live long and healthy. Without bond we sick and die." Dobby said.

"You are free. Right?"

"I is Hogwarts elf. I gets magics from castle but your magic bes better for me. I be good elf. I be strong and live long as yous elf."

Harry watched the elf for any sign of deception. "Dobby do you want to bond with me? I will pay you and you will get time off. Is that agreeable with you?" Dobby nodded.

"What do I need to do?" Harry asked.

Dobby looked at his hands still being held by Harry. "Yous asks me again."

"Dobby I would like you to be my elf if you want to bond with me?"

"Yes Master Harry Potter Sir." With that there was a glow around them both and Harry could feel what Dobby was feeling. He was elated and a little scared but the fear was going away and being replaced with determination to protect him.

"I can feel you Dobby." Harry said.

"I is close to Master Harry Potter sir. I protect you now."

"Dobby. Can you just call me Harry?" The elf shook his head no so hard his ears flapped against his eyes.

"Can we shorten it please?" Harry asked

"Master Harry I is use if Master Harry Potter Sirs is ok." Harry nodded.

"Now about this letter." Harry said.

"Master Harry do letter now. Dobby can protect if it bad Goblin."

Harry activated the letter as Dobby vanished. Not popped away just became invisible. Seconds after Harry had touched the letter with hand and wand a Goblin arrived. They looked at each other for several seconds.

"Griphook. It's good to see you." Harry said.

"You remember me?" Griphook asked.

"Of course I do. You were the first Goblin I met and you helped me with the vault." Harry said.

"You are a different kind of wizard Harry Potter. Time is money as we say." With that he handed a thick folder to Harry. It was about two inches thick.

"What is this?" Harry asked.

"Those are questionable transactions from the Potter accounts. These should have never been allowed." Griphook said.

"Ok. Um what can we do about this?" Harry asked. He must have said the right thing as Griphook smiled full of teeth.

"Are you asking Goblin Griphook for help with your accounts, Harry Potter?" The smiling Goblin asked.

Dobby became visible and silenced Harry before he could reply. "You Goblin what you want and why?"

Harry noticed the Goblin wasn't moving. He looked at Dobby. "Did you petrify him?" Dobby nodded.

"How about you allow his mouth to work." Harry suggested.

"I am here to help Harry Potter with irregularities in his accounts." the Goblin repeated.

"Why?" Dobby asked. The Goblin looked at Harry.

"I would like to hear that answer also. I thought Goblins didn't do anything unless there was financial gain." Harry said now remembering what he had over heard about Goblins.

"I want to be your account manager. If you ask me for help and I find errors that have cost you money I will become your manager. The Potter account is a much coveted job. Worth the risk." Griphook said.

"Risk? What Risks." Harry asked.

"Risk for me. If you refuse I will be retired." Griphook said looking a little scared.

"Master Harry. If yous refuses Griphook be shorter." Dobby looked sad.

"Shorter?" Harry asked. Dobby nodded and drew his finger across his own neck. Harrys eyes opened wide at that and looked at Griphook. Griphook nodded.

"Please release him Dobby. We have nothing to fear from Griphook." Dobby nodded and snapped and Griphook could move again.

"So this folder is the extent of people stealing from me?" Harry asked.

"Yes, Lord Potter. That and more. Information has been withheld from you. Information that you should have been given when you turned twelve." Griphook said "We do need to move quickly."

"Why?"

"In the morning people are planning on a large withdrawal that will cripple your accounts. If we go now we can stop them and we can save your family heirlooms from being auctioned off." Griphook said.

"OK. Can Dobby come with us?"

"Of course Lord Potter. Your bonded elf will be welcome to conduct business for you when needed."

"Excellent. Is this acceptable with you Dobby?" Harry asked. Dobby nodded.

Griphook took out a piece of rope and held it out to Harry and Dobby. They all took ahold of the rope and vanished from Number four Privet drive.

They arrived in a dingy, dark, and musty tunnel. Harry looked around trying to see where they were.

"We have arrived in a new tunnel under the bank. I couldn't risk you being recognized as we walked through the bank even at this hour." Griphook told them both. He led them to a waiting cart and rode to a dusty landing. "We are close to your account managers office here. We need to be quiet and get in his office without you being seen."

"Dobby help." and snapped his fingers and Harry was disillusioned along with Dobby.

"Good. Follow closely and try to step in my foot prints." Griphook led them through several corridors and around several bends. As their journey progressed the walls and floors were looking better until the last turn it looked like Harry had remembered with the stone walls shining as if polished and the hard wood door with gold fixtures. They stopped at an elaborate door with a gold plaque that read 'Potter Account Manager' on it.

Griphook took a deep breath and opened the door. On silent hinges it opened and they all entered. Dobby was holding Harrys hand and had squeezed it when Griphook had taken the breath. Harry figured that was not normal for a Goblin to be nervous which made Dobby on edge. It didn't do much for Harry either.

Griphook relaxed as he confirmed that the office was empty. Entering quickly and closing the door Griphook waved his hands over the door and Harry heard several locks click and clang into place.

"You may become visible again Lord Potter and Dobby." Griphook said as he hurried through the large office to the desk. Harry looked around at the office that was as big as the Dursleys living and dining room combined. There was a dark wood conference table with eight matching chairs around it, a matching ornate desk with a chair that would rival Dumbledores throne at Hogwarts.

Griphook was behind the desk removing several large books and a folder and a plain wooden box. Bringing them to the conference table he offered chairs to Harry and Dobby who sat quickly.

"We have very little time so I will be brief if that is acceptable." He enquired. At Harrys nod he continued.

Opening the folder he rotated to so that Harry could read the top page. It was a letter to the Potter Account Manager. Harry held the letter so both he and Dobby could read it. It outlined how all of the Potter heirlooms were to be auctioned off at his request and the monies be put in a third vault that was not a Potter vault. There was also a section of items that were to be reserved from the auction and put in that same hidden vault. Harry read the long list of items and start shaking in anger. Dobby could feel his anger and put a hand on his arm.

"Look date of auction Master Harry." Dobby said

Harry looked at it was a few days from now. This hadn't happened yet. When he got to the end of the letter and read the signing name he almost exploded. That manipulating old goat fucker was responsible.

"I want him dead. That conniving old bastard made me compete in the death match, probably arranged for the meeting with Voldermort. I bet he was counting on my death." Harry blurted out.

"That was my thought. Look at the date of the letter. June 23, 1995" Griphook said.

"The day before the last task." Harry said flatly. "He was planning on selling off all the Potter estate the day before the task. Why?"

"There is more but summed up. He and others were planning on looting your estate after your death and before the Ministry would have a chance to lock down your vaults. If you were missing it would take at least a couple of months and this letter proves it was planned before your disappearance. It's actually very Slytherin." Griphook said.

Harry took a deep breath. Then a second calming himself. He had faced down a dragon, Merpeople, and Voldermort. This was one more task. Once calmed he started to think.

"OK. Thank you Griphook. What can I do about this. You obviously have a plan." Harry said. "Goblin verses Slytherin. My money is on my Goblin right now."

Griphook gave Harry that feral grin with all his teeth. "We don't have a lot of time before someone figures out we are in here. But yes, I have a plan. You will have to trust me for a small part of this but I give you my word as a Goblin that I have your family name and fortune in the front of my mind."

"That and you become the Potter Account Manager." Harry said with an equally toothy smile.

Griphook returned the smile. He handed Harry the wooden box and indicated he should open it. On opening it Harry found an ornate ring with a griffon on top of a Ruby red stone. Harry could feel it call to him as he reached for it.

"Wait. Before you put it on. This is the Potter heir ring. If you are emancipated, as I believe, when you put this on it will become the Potter head of house ring. If that happens then magic has accepted you as head of house and you can make all decisions for the family. You must understand this before you don the ring. Do you accept the family responsibilities." Griphook said.

Dobby put his hand on Harrys arm. Looking down Harry realized this was Dobbys way of letting him know he wanted to tell Harry something.

"What do you want me to know Dobby and in the future you are free to stop me if you think I should be aware of something before I act. You will be forgiven even if I don't take your advice." Harry said. He saw the little elf relax.

"If there be problems with family accounts that bad manager do you be responsible for thems when you wear ring." Dobby said.

"What problems or debts will I have to deal with if I become Lord Potter?" Harry asked.

"You have a very smart elf and he is right. There are several loans in arrears that you will have to deal with. That is the best news. There is also the official sacking of the current account manager you will need to announce. I have written down the words you need to say including me as your new manager." Griphook passed a single sheet of paper to Harry with a small paragraph on it. "There is a betrothal contract with the Weasleys for Ginnerva."

"A what?" Harry shouted.

"A betrothal contract. If you wish to break it the cost is minimal. If you do not wish to marry the girl it may be worth just paying it off." Griphook said.

Harry felt Dobby squeeze his arm again.

"How minimal? And who made this contract?" Harry asked.

"It will cost you ten thousand galleons. The contract was signed by both Dumbledore and Molly Weasley. However, you could contest it as Molly is not the head of the Weasley family. Arthur might be more reasonable when you reach out as the new head of the Potter family. Your family is also much higher ranking so that would work in your favor. There is nothing else that I am aware of." Griphook said.

Harry thought for a minute. "How will ten thousand galleons effect my account if we stop the sale?"

"You will not noticed the amount missing. Your current holdings are over one point five million galleons. It might be just as well to let them have the money and be done with it. But, that would be your decision."

Harry nodded then looked at Dobby. "Aside from a few instances you have always been on my side." Harry started as the little elf blushed. "Do you think this is a good idea. I've learned that I need to have trusted people helping me and you are my first. Griphook is rapidly becoming the second."

"I's believe this be good for yous. Must stops Potter sale only you can do." Dobby said. Griphook nodded agreement.

Harry put the ring on and froze in place. Dobby quickly release his arm and stepped back as magic engulfed the teen. Some of the tendrils of magic wrapped around Dobby and he was held stiffly in place. Harry could feel the magic of the Potters entering him and wrapping around his body and mind. He saw the first Potters making pottery by hand and magic blessed them with magic tools to for them to use for their amazing creation. The usage of the tools were explained and demonstrated in his mind. More magic poured in and memories of the Potters through the ages. Harry was quickly overwhelmed and passed out. Dobby caught him and placed him gently on back in the chair.

"Now we is waitings." Dobby announced.

A few minutes later Harry awoke to a concerned looking Dobby and Griphook. He sat up and looking at the ring on his finger he announced.

"Now we begin."
