Episode 22: Rosie Gets It Wrong
Based on "Day of the Diesels The Movie"
Within moments, Rosie had finally reached her classroom, but the young pink-haired girl was completely out of breath.
"Hello Rosie," she heard Henry call to her. "You look like you were running in a race. Are you all right?"
"Oh, yeah," Rosie nodded slowly while panting. "Yeah, I'm all right Henry. I...just didn't want to be late today."
"You sure are dedicated, aren't you?" Henry chuckled with a smile on his face.
"I guess you could say that," Rosie smiled back, while walking into the classroom with her green-haired friend following her inside.
Several minutes later, the teacher came into the classroom with two familiar figures walking in behind him.
"Class, I would like to introduce you to firefighters; Flynn and Belle. They're here to do a fire safety lecture with you today, and if any of you want to, you can write down notes from this lesson."
The teacher stepped away and sat down at his desk to watch the lecture.
"Hello class. I'm Chief firefighter Flynn, and this firefighter Belle. It's a pleasure to be here and to meet all of you and to see three familiar faces too..." he said, while also looking over to Thomas and Emily. "Anyway, we're here today to teach you about what to do when there's a fire."
"We've learned this when we were kids," muttered Gordon quietly and deadpanly.
"Perhaps so lad," Flynn replied. This caused Gordon to gasp, thinking that the fire chief shouldn't have heard him. Flynn smiled, "but even now, it's always wise to get a refreshing reminder on the very importance of this stuff."
"Very true," agreed Edward with a nod.
"Okay, so who can tell me what to do if your clothes somehow catch on fire?" asked Belle, seeing Duck raise a hand. "Yes?"
"You roll along the ground?" Duck asked hopefully.
"Correct!"
"Wait a minute," spoke up James. "Shouldn't water help do the same?"
"Very true young man," said Belle. "But it's safer to stop what you're doing so you don't let the fire spread to the rest of you."
Flynn then asked a question. "Now, if a building you're in is on fire, you're near a door, and you don't know if there are flames on the other side...what should you do?"
In an instant, Thomas raised his hand.
"Yes, Thomas?"
"Feel the door itself. If it's hot, then DON'T go and open the door," The blue-haired boy answered.
"Correct," said Flynn.
For the next hour and a half, the firefighters talked with the class about what they should do and they shouldn't do when it comes to fires. At one point, Emily whispered over to Thomas.
"Do you have an extra pencil I could use?" she whispered over to him. "My pen just ran out of ink and I don't have any pencils."
Thomas looked in his pencil case, pulled out a pencil and handed it over to Emily.
"Thank you Thomas," and she winked at the blue-haired boy.
Rosie had seen what Thomas did for Emily and couldn't help but feel sad.
"Hey Thomas," she whispered, though a little louder. "Do you have a pencil..."
"Is there something you want to say Rosie?" The teacher suddenly asked.
Lots of people were now staring. Rosie felt herself turn red out of embarrassment.
"N-never mind," she said meekly. "I'm sorry, I'll stay quiet."
And with that, the firefighters continued talking with the students.
"He didn't even look over to me, he's just ignoring me. It was just like Diesel had said," Rosie thought sadly to herself.
After the long school day was done, Rosie walked up to Thomas' desk, but found him talking with Percy and Emily. When they had finally finished talking, Thomas got up from his seat and started walking out of the classroom.
"Thomas! Wait up!" she cried.
Thomas stopped and turned back to Rosie.
"Hey Rosie, what's up?" he asked cheerfully. "Wasn't it great that Flynn and Belle visited us today?"
"Yeah," nodded Rosie. "It was even funnier when James tried to flirt with Belle at one point."
"Yeah, what a riot!" laughed Thomas, along with Percy and Emily. But then he saw Rosie looking sad. "H-hey, is everything okay?"
"Well, I was wondering if we could hang out tonight."
But to the pink-haired girl's disappointment...
"I'm sorry, Rosie, but I'm going to be busy tonight too, and so will Percy and Emily. Fire chief Flynn and firefighter Belle would both like some help at the annual spring sale while the rest of their brigade are on call. Maybe tomorrow night, would that be okay?"
Rosie nodded sadly. "Well, unless something comes up, then yeah. Maybe we can hang out then...I guess."
"Alright then, and I'm sorry again Rosie. I'll see you tomorrow." And with that said, Thomas turned and ran to catch up to both Percy and Emily.
Rosie sighed unhappily and walked sadly over to the school exit. Just before leaving the school though, she decided to stop by the smelter's class. As luck would have it, Mister Ten and his students were all in the back room working on fixing broken down equipment.
"Hello Rosie!" Mister Ten called pleasantly. "It's good to see you again. How were your classes today?"
"They were alright. We learned a bit about fire safety from a couple of firefighters that came in today, but..." Rosie sighed in depression. "I felt as though I was being ignored, especially by my friend Thomas."
"I know that feeling. Lots of people often ignored me when I was younger...come of it, mostly everyone still ignores me." Mister Ten pointed out. "Only you and the Smelter Class kids ever seem to listen to me."
Rosie was shocked. "That's terrible...!"
Just then, both of them heard a loud clang from the back of the shops.
"Ow!" That scream came from Dart. "Who put those tools there?!"
"Dart, be careful back there!" shouted Den from the front of the room. "There isn't a lot of room in this room."
"I know that! But surely there's enough room for someone to put their tools away! You know we've said hundreds of times already that we need a bigger room than this!"
Mister Ten snarled. "SILENCE!"
This subdued Den and Dart both into silence...though it was more out of fear than actual respect.
"Well, there is a couple of empty classrooms you guys can use," Rosie piped up. "They're a lot bigger than this room, giving you more space and more chances to fix broken equipment."
Mister Ten raised an eyebrow at Rosie, but managed to show a quick smile. "Those rooms would be very perfect for what we do here Rosie." He then started to get angry again, "but that cheapskate principal; Sir Topham Hatt, won't ever listen to us. It seems unfair that my students have to work in this small space. I don't want to see any of them get hurt, but what can I do? He won't listen to anyone of the Smelter's Class."
"Well, maybe I could help, I could talk to the principal for you and ask him to give you a bigger classroom."
"You'd really do that for us?"
"Of course, I'd be glad to help you all. You all deserve something much better than this old classroom. So come tomorrow morning, I'll go into the principal's office and ask Sir Topham Hatt to give you the proper classroom you deserve."
Mister Ten was pleased. "Thank you young Rosie. Now I have to ask; do you have a way of getting home?"
"Uh...yeah, there's a bus waiting in the parking lot...but I'm not sure if I can get out there through the way I came in."
"Not a problem. Dart; show Rosie the short cut and make sure she doesn't miss the bus, understood?" Mister Ten asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, I understand perfectly. Come along Rosie."
And so Rosie followed Dart out of the room, taking a shortcut from the room to the bus stop. The bus was about to pull away, but Dart ran alongside and pounded on the door of the bus. The bus driver stopped the bus and Rosie climbed on board. But before the doors closed, she said 'thank you' to Dart. Afterwards, the bus left.
The following next morning, an hour before classes were to begin, Rosie arrived at the school and walked over to the principal's office in the hopes of speaking with Sir Topham Hatt. Inside the office was the secretary, Mrs. Stacy Jones.
"Good morning, Mrs. Jones," greeted Rosie brightly.
"Oh, good morning Rosie!" Stacy Jones replied, smiling upon seeing Rosie. "What can I do for you today?"
"I'm here to see Sir Topham Hatt," she replied.
But Stacy Jones shook her head. "Sorry dear, but he left to have a meeting with the city mayor, and he won't be back until the end of the day. But if you'd like, I could leave him a message for you."
"Thanks! It's about the Smelter classroom."
"The Smelter's Class?" asked Stacy Jones.
"Oh yes," said Rosie. "Their classroom is much too small and broken up. They want a bigger room that's in better shape."
Stacy Jones's expression changed from cheerful to stern.
"Uh I'm sorry. He has nothing to discuss about the Smelter's Class," she stated bluntly.
"Why not? They deserve a better classroom," Rosie protested.
Stacy Jones dismissed that. "I'm sure they have a fine classroom. Now, you'd better get going or you'll be late for class."
Rosie grew very unhappy with Stacy Jones.
"I think you don't care about the Smelter's Class," she said hurtfully, and then left the office.
Inside the Smelter classroom, Rosie soon arrived, much to Mister Ten's joy.
"Good morning Rosie!" he called happily. "How did it go?"
Rosie shook her head. "I'm sorry. Sir Topham Hatt is going to a meeting, and Mrs. Jones also told me your classroom is fine, and that there's nothing wrong with it."
Mister Ten was extremely unhappy to hear that, and so he proceeded to pound on the desk with his good hand in a rage.
"That blasted woman!" he shouted in anger.
But Rosie wasn't done yet. "But I have an idea."
"Huh?"
"If I can convince one more person to help us, maybe we can speak to Sir Topham Hatt together. After all, 'Two heads are better than one' you know."
Mister Ten smiled a creepy smile. "Yes, two heads are better than one," he nodded. "So who do you have in mind who can help us?"
"My friend Thomas. I just need to go and speak with him alone and ask him to help us," Rosie pointed out.
"I see. Well, if you can convince him, bring him here back here so I can have a chat with him and then you can go speak to Sir Topham Hatt." Mister Ten requested.
"Sure thing, Mister Ten. In fact, I'm going to go see if he's arrived yet or not. I'll be back in a bit Mister Ten!"
"I'll be waiting for your return, young Rosie...oh yes, I'll be waiting," Mister Ten sneered sinisterly, just as he went back to his office...but the door once again slammed on him, much to his great annoyance. He struggled for a bit until he got back into the room. "Ohhhh, not again!"
Rosie ran through the hallways and up the stairwell until she arrived at the classroom, where all of her friends and classmates were, waiting for her.
"Hey Rosie," Thomas called. "I've been trying to reach you for a while. Where have you been?"
Rosie walked over. "Why do you ask Thomas?"
"Well, I'm staying true to my word. I would like to hang out with you tonight. To tell you the truth, I've been feeling guilty about ignoring you lately."
Just hearing Thomas say that made Rosie blush happily.
"So where were you, Rosie?"
Smiling, Rosie decided to tell her friend. "Well Thomas, I'll be more than glad to tell you of where I was. I was in the Smelter's Class," she said cheerfully.
Suddenly, the whole classroom silenced. The students all stared at Rosie in complete shock.
"You were in the Smelter's class?" Emily asked in surprise.
"Yep, and they want our help. They need a new classroom, their old one is just too small and the students are getting hurt inside the room because of it."
"Those smelter class teens have enough room," James said rudely, "they don't need another classroom."
"You're just as selfish and uncaring as Mrs. Jones and Sir Topham Hatt!" snapped Rosie in anger. "You don't know what it's like for them to work in an unsafe room where they have to constantly fix broken equipment! They're always being put second and that isn't right at all!"
"But we do know them well enough," Gordon piped up. "Well enough to know that many of them are troublesome fibbers and cheaters."
"They're probably just lying to you Rosie," added Henry.
"You shouldn't be hanging around with a dangerous crowd like them," warned Duck. "'Cause they will say anything to trick you."
"I don't care what you all say. The Smelter Class teens deserve something better than what they have already!" argued Rosie, before trying to calm herself down. "So Thomas...will you come down to the classroom at the end of the day? Mister Ten will tell you everything."
"Thomas, I sense a trap," Emily whispered.
"Yeah, me too," Thomas whispered back, before looking to Rosie calmly. "Okay. Emily and I will both go with you to the Smelter classroom after school to have a chat with this 'Mister Ten'."
"Great!" said Rosie happily. "I promise you that Mister Ten will explain everything to you guys."
As Rosie walked away, the rest of the students in the classroom spoke to the two teenagers.
"Are you sure that's wise to do?" asked Toby.
"To be honest, not really," said Thomas.
"Then don't go!" suggested James. "Common sense."
"But now I have to," Thomas replied. "I promised Rosie I would."
"As have I," Emily added.
After the long school day was done, Rosie walked off to the smelter's class where Mister Ten was waiting for her.
"It's all better than we first thought Mister Ten," Rosie said. "Although my friend Thomas, and the rest of my classmates don't believe me, I have convinced Thomas and my new friend Emily to come here so that they can hear everything from you."
"Most excellent Rosie...now, do you know if Sir Topham Hatt is here?" Mister Ten asked.
Rosie shook her head. "No, he's still out for the day and speaking to the mayor. I checked at lunch, but we won't give up."
"And what about Mister Percival. Is he still in his office?"
Again Rosie shook her head. "Hmm...no, I don't think so, I think he went home early due to a cold or something, I'm not sure. I heard from my friend Skarloey that he was leaving for the rest of the day."
Mister Ten smiled and said something in a sinister tone. "That's good, very good indeed."
"Why's that?" Rosie asked nervously.
And so Mister Ten spoke normally. "Because I'm going to alternate the plan a little bit. We're going to take over the entire school instead." When he said that, Rosie gasped in horror. "And you will lead us Rosie. When the school is under our control, Sir Topham Hatt will have to listen to us. Once our demands are met, we'll immediately hand the school back to him."
"Oh," sighed Rosie in relief. "You had me scared there for a moment."
"Don't you worry Rosie. you've got nothing to be scared of. In fact, you need you to brave and lead us, so what do you say Rosie?"
Before Rosie could answer, two more figures walked into the classroom, it was Thomas and Emily. The moment Thomas saw Mister Ten, he gasped in horror. The blue-haired boy knew exactly who that man really was...it was his archenemy from a few years ago.
"Emily, stay behind me," he whispered.
Emily didn't need telling twice, she stood behind Thomas, for she also knew who the guy was. Although she had never seen him, the dark green-haired girl knew who he was from what Thomas had told her before.
"Welcome Thomas and Emily, we've been waiting for you two, for so very long!" Mister Ten cried dramatically, as he spread his arms out in welcome. Then, he started to speak normally once again. "Den and Dart will take you both around the classroom to show you everything. Rosie and I are both busy."
Den held his left arm out. "Come with us. We're going to the back room."
But Thomas was not buying it one bit. "Forget it! We're taking Rosie and leaving," he argued.
He and Emily both turned to leave, but Dart quickly got in their way.
"You're not going anywhere. You have to stay here with us. We're going to take good care of you," he said in a sinister tone.
Diesel smirked. "The way you say it Dart makes it sound scary."
Dart smiled back. "Yeah, cool isn't it?"
"What about Rosie?" demanded Thomas.
"She'll be coming with me boy," Mister Ten stated, looking to the pink-haired girl. "Am I right Rosie?"
"Yup!" nodded Rosie brightly.
Thomas couldn't believe it. "Rosie, do you even know who you're talking to?! That's Diesel-"
But Thomas was cut off when Mister Ten's claw snapped loudly. Sparks flew from it and landed on the floor of the room, which sometimes happened when he snapped his claw.
"Den, Dart, now!" shouted Mister Ten, before calming down and turning to Rosie. "Are you ready to lead us Rosie?"
Rosie thought about it, then with a smile on her face, she went ahead and answered the question.
"I'm ready, Mister Ten. Follow me to the principal's office!"
And so Mister Ten and several of his students (Paxton and Sidney both seemed reluctant however) all followed Rosie out of the classroom.
"Rosie, don't!" shouted Thomas in protest. "They're tricking you! They don't want a bigger classroom! Don't take them to the office!"
But Rosie heard nothing as she lead the charge of Smelter Class students and teacher down the hallway towards the principal's office. They walked through the hallways, much to the surprise of some of the other students. When they saw Mister Ten, they quickly ran for some of the classrooms as fast as their legs could take them. At last, Rosie, Mister Ten, and the Smelter teens reached the office.
"Here we are Mister Ten. This is the principal's office."
"Well done young Rosie. Now if you'll excuse me..."
Without warning, the teacher kicked the office door right open violently. Inside the office, Stacy Jones noticed that and stood up crossly.
"What is the meaning of this?!" she demanded, but seeing Mister Ten's threatening glare caused her to shut up. "Um...good afternoon."
"Good afternoon," Mister Ten snickered, delighted to see someone cower before him. "Come along Rosie."
The pink-haired girl followed him into Sir Topham Hatt's main office. Inside, Rosie could not believe the size of the office.
"I never ever thought it was this big."
Mister Ten raised an eyebrow. "You've never been to the principal's office?"
"No Mister Ten, I haven't...I've actually had no reason to come in here before."
"Look around then my dear. You deserve it all," The teacher stated, before he grabbed the microphone, and began to speak through it. "Good afternoon, students of Sodor High School. This is Mister Ten of the Smelter's Class speaking. As of now, the school is under our control..."
Rosie smiled, as she was expecting Mister Ten to say 'until our demands are met.' ...but what he said next was completely different.
"...and we won't be giving it back anytime soon! You all are now my prisoners. Those who stand in our way shall be destroyed!"
Rosie gasped in surprise when she heard that. Never the less, Mister Ten continued to speak.
"If you are all wondering how this came to pass, then you have the American transfer student Rosie to thank for giving us...no, me, this wonderful opportunity! And if you ever come across Sir Topham Hatt again, tell that fat tub of lard that this is what happens to those who ignore me! ...thank you."
With that said, he put the microphone down feeling very pleased with himself.
"Uh, Mister Ten, you weren't serious when you said that you weren't going to give the school back, right?" Rosie asked, hoping he would answer 'yes'.
Sadly, Mister Ten cackled with laughter, "Ha, ha, ha! I was being dead serious Rosie. The school is ours and I'm not going to give it back!"
"But why? You promised..."
"Well, too bad. I'm going back on my promise." Mister Ten walked past Rosie and out to the office where the other Smelter students were waiting. "The school is ours now boys...go and have some fun!"
"Thanks very much, Diesel 10!" came from Diesel, 'Arry, and Bert. "You're the best!"
"Diesel 10?!" Rosie exclaimed in horror. "You mean you're Diesel 10?!"
The man, now known as Diesel 10, turned around with a evil smirk on his face.
"I see you've heard of me Rosie. Then you probably also heard of what happened to me?" Diesel 10 quizzed.
"Yes, I know the whole story...so that's what Thomas was trying to say. He was trying to warn me."
"Correct, but he's too late. The school is ours...or rather mine now," laughed Diesel 10. "It should've been that way a long time ago, but Sir Topham Hatt got me fired. Then, when I tried to take this school by force, your friend Thomas stopped me and got my arm crushed! Now I'll finally get what's coming to me...revenge!"
"You...you won't get away with this!" Rosie spluttered in shock and anger.
"Oh, but I will and I have! And I have you to thank Rosie, you gave us the school and your friend Thomas, and now I won't let either of them go. You must be pleased with yourself."
Rosie shook her head angrily. "I'm not. I can't believe I helped you take over, I'll..."
"You'll do nothing!" Diesel 10 retorted in a threatening tone. "Since you helped me take over the school, I'll let you leave...but if you don't go in the next five minutes, you'll become a prisoner like Thomas, his girlfriend; Emily, and everyone else who's still here in this blasted school right now."
Rosie couldn't believe it. All this time, Diesel 10 had been manipulating her good heart for his own selfish goals. She thought she was doing a good thing for someone...instead she just did something bad. Really bad!
There was only thing Rosie could do now; run away from the school and get away from them.
"Diesel 10, why did you do that?" asked Diesel. "You know she'll go get help!"
"If she does, there's nothing anyone can do now. We're locking down the school and no one can get in nor out."
Diesel 10 walked up to the front reception desk and pushed a button underneath the table, which is used to lock down the school in case of emergencies. Outside the school, metal bars started going down just as Rosie ran out of the school.
Now all Rosie could do was only watch in horror as her school was taken over by Diesel 10 and his group of troublemakers.
"Oh no!" Rosie cried. "Now everyone's trapped in there, and it's all my fault!"
With tears pouring down from her eyes, the pink-haired girl turned and ran away as fast as she could. This is because she felt as though she had no courage to face Diesel 10 and his group alone.
Meanwhile, inside the Smelter's classroom, Den and Dart had both tied up Thomas and Emily and left them in the backroom while they guarded the doors outside.
"It was Diesel 10," Thomas grumbled angrily. "I'm sure of it!"
"What do we do now Thomas?" Emily asked nervously.
"I don't know Emily."
Emily grew more and more nervous. "If that really was Diesel 10, then we better get out of here now before he discovers who I really am."
"Well even if he discovers the truth, I won't let him hurt you," Thomas reassured calmly. "I made a promise to both you and your father that I would never let anything or anyone hurt you, and I intend to keep that promise no matter what...even if I have to die to do so."
"You're so sweet Thomas, thank you," Emily smiled a bit.
Just then, Diesel 10 returned to the classroom.
"Well, well, well," snickered the villain. "Isn't this a grand day for me? Not only do I finally get Sodor High School under my control, but I have my archenemy locked up too."
"You fibbing snake!" shouted Thomas. "Let us go!"
"In due time. You know, I've been wanting payback on you for a long time Thomas," Diesel 10 mocked. "Now that you're trapped, I can finally achieve it!"
"For now, but we won't be locked up forever Diesel 10!" Thomas retorted acidly. "Mark my words!"
"You talk big Thomas." Diesel 10 taunted. "Too bad though you can't back up your words with you being tied up!"
Thomas gritted his teeth in anger. "Alright, you want revenge! Then go ahead and have it, but I only ask for one request...you let my friend Emily go. She's done nothing to you or your Smelter's Class."
"Oh, I'd love to, but at the moment, I can't let anyone escape. I've locked down the entire school, so no one can save you." Diesel 10 sighed, before smiling sadistically. "Don't worry though, when I'm ready to have my revenge, I'll kill you only. She can stay here out of harm's way...to watch everything happen."
He chuckled evilly.
"Thomas..." Emily whispered. She was now worried for her friend.
"That's fine villain," seethed Thomas.
"I'll be back, my young friends. Right now I need to go and capture anyone else who's still running around in the hallways." Diesel 10 waved mockingly and walked out into the main classroom.
What he didn't know was that there was oil on the floor, spilled by two students in his class, and as Diesel 10 cackled, his claw snapped loudly, thus causing sparks to fly and land on the floor. Last time he did that, the sparks hit the floor and nothing happened, but this time, the sparks fell onto the oil, which caught fire instantly, but Diesel 10 didn't notice at all. He just walked out of the classroom, laughing maniacally as he went.
