Hello everybody, sorry I haven't updated in a long while. You have no idea how busy I've been with my Masters and work. Still, I hope you all enjoy this chapter. Thank you for the reviews and please let me know what you all think.
I Accidentally Vaporize my Algebra Teacher Part One
(Jason P.O.V)
I was standing in a wasteland of grey sand. Alone and scared. I don't know where I was or why I was here. I searched for a source of light but in front of my toes was a never-ending pit. And a voice. A deep, voice.
"I know you're there. I can smell your blood. It has already begun, Jason. Soon you and the forbidden child will complete my thief's plan and I will rise again. The end has already begun and there is nothing anyone even the gods can do to stop me,". The ground crumbled and I felt myself falling into a pit of darkness, screaming out for help that would never come.
"Jason!".
My screaming was silenced by the banging of my head against the wood. "Oww!".
"Woah easy," In the dark by my side, I could see Luke's darkly curly hair and matching eyes with a scar stretching down the left side of his face. "Just take it easy,".
"It was that dream again," I panicked. "And that voice. And I fell into a pit,". I hyperventilated.
"Just calm down, Jason. You're okay. It was just another dream,". Luke clasped my shoulders and breathed in and out slowly and I copied his moments. "You see. You're alright. You're home,".
"Oh Luke," I rubbed my eyes. "I'm sorry,".
More campers grounded up behind look with lanterns. Their faces were half-angry, half tired. I was embarrassed and ashamed. I closed my eyes.
"Don't tell me it was that dream again,". A girl complained.
"Can't he go to another cabin?". A mean boy groaned.
"Shut up," another cabin mate, Chris Rodriguez said. "Can't you see you're upsetting him? Now give him some space,".
The argument turned into a fight. Luke had to push everyone apart. "That's enough everyone. We're all tried so back to bed now,".
"But Luke …," the same girl complained, obviously about to ask for the tenth time that I'd go sleep somewhere else.
"That's enough! We're all a family here and Jason is a part of. He stays with us,".
Chris, who acted like his second-in-command, gave everyone a look and they left at once, not bothering to look at me again lest they be reprimanded by Luke or Chris. Chris gave me a soft look, which I nodded to and he went to his own bunk.
"I'm sorry,". I felt like I was an embarrassment to Luke, a trouble dreamer who running his reputation with the other members of our cabin.
"No. You've nothing to be sorry for. The dreams will pass,".
"It's the fifth night now, Luke. I should just get a sleeping bag and get in the forest," I tried to climb out, but he wouldn't let me.
"I meant what I said before. You're staying with us. I'll sit by you until you fall asleep,".
"No, you don't have to,".
"You're my little brother Jason. We're family and that means we take care of each other,". I teared up to his words and he pulled me into a warm hug. "No matter what happens Jason, I'll always have your back,".
I laid back down on the bed and as my eyes closed, I knew that as long as Luke was with me, I wouldn't ever have to see that spectral figure again. At least I hoped not to.
(Phoebe's Point of View)
I woke to the tweeting of birds outside my window. I walked over to the curtains and pulled them open allowing sunlight to flood the room.
"Close the curtains!". Grover's voice was muffled by his pillow. I was so glad he was my roommate.
"No more time for beauty sleep. We've got a big day today,". But Grover wouldn't get out of bed. "Come on. I don't have time for this,". I pulled him off the bed and he landed in a blanket bundle on the floor. I laughed.
"Not funny," he complained.
"Up you get sleepy head," I pulled him onto his feet as he rubbed his eyes.
"You excited about today?"
"Absolutely, Grover. It's been ages since I last went to the MOMA,".
"And we're not gonna let Nancy ruin it, are we,".
"Absolutely not,". I held out my palm. He clapped it. Then we fist-bumped and wiggled our fingers as we pulled them away. "Time for some breakfast,". I brushed my hair and pulled on my blue pearl which I always wore, thinking of my dad and who he was.
(Jason's Point of View)
I woke up early that morning. After brushing my hair and rubbing my eyes with water, I pulled on an orange camper top and, jeggings and two necklaces. One was a simple black string of twelve different coloured clay beads. The one was my golden horn charm – the only clue to my birth family and where I came from.
Luke swung an arm around my shoulders as we walked out. "Hey come on. Don't let what happened last night get to you,".
"Hey guys!" a tanned girl with dark braided hair wearing an orange top like us came over and hugged us. "You both sleep okay?"
"Not really," I confessed, still rubbing my eyes.
"Another bad dream?". I nodded. "Jason, you really should speak to the Oracle,".
Luke objected. "No, Annabeth. That sounds like a really bad idea,".
"Luke, Jason's been like this for the past week. His dreams must mean something,".
"He should at least tell Chiron first,".
This time I objected. "No. I don't want him worrying about me,".
"He's your dad, Jason," Annabeth said. "He needs to know,".
"I don't want to give him another reason to keep an eye on me all the time,".
Before Annabeth could argue, we saw a rough teenage girl with long curly hair of brown marching right up to us. "Bad dreams again, ungodly child?" she mocked me. "Need to tell Daddy Horsey you had a bad dream?".
"Shut your mouth, Clarisse," Luke defended.
"Thought you would have sent him out of your cabin to sleep in the woods,".
"Why don't you go and bother someone else?" Annabeth dared but Clarise kept on glaring at me.
"I don't know why you two traitors hang around this outsider. He's not special like the rest of us,".
Luke burned red. "You take that back," he warned.
"Or what?" she goaded.
I stormed off at once, unable to bear another moment in our rival's presence. Out of all the kids who made my life a living hell, Clarisse La Rue, daughter of Ares, was the worst. The arrogant bully just loved targeting newcomers and people who weren't demigods like me just for fun. Ignoring Annabeth and Luke's cries, I fled to a nearby field where Pegasi were chomping on the crunchy green grass. I walked over to a grey-coloured horse with mighty wings and a white mane and tail. Puckering my lips, I whistled a strong note through the air and the black beady eyes were laid on me. Pulling out an apple from my pocket, I held it out. Chomp! The plump red fruit was devoured by the Pegasi's buck teeth.
"Morning Misty. I hope you had much better sleep than I did,". Misty snorted as I stroked her snout. "Up for a ride?". She eagerly genuflected and I swung my leg over her back and made sure my feet were behind her wings. One single flap and we were off the ground soaring over the camp.
(Phoebe's Point of View)
After a quick breakfast in the cafeteria, Grover and I went to our room to pack up our items for our trip to the best museum in New York City. Looking for spare paper and pens, I found my doodle book and opened it. Inside was every single strange thing I had seen since I was little. Flying horses, mechanical creatures, beings who looked nothing like humans … My whole life has been a strange mystery. I just didn't know why.
"And you sure you wanna bring that book with you?" Grover asked uncertainly.
"Might as well. Just gotta keep it out of Nancy's hands," I packed it up and we left our dorm, heading straight to the yellow bus waiting for us aside. And just to my luck, a kleptomaniac girl with wild red hair was waiting for us.
"Morning Jackson. You and Goat Boy are excited to meet your imaginary friends today,".
"He's not a goat," I defended Grover.
"Phoebe, it's fine," he tried to calm me down but I couldn't stop myself from wanting to beat up Nancy for making our lives a living hell.
"Grover snores like a goat. I can hear him from down the hall,".
Her friends laughed but then I eyed her weird-coloured pants. "At least he has a good in clothes, Nancy Pancy,". Nancy's friends laughed at the name I gave her, and she glared at me.
"You'll pay for that, Jackson. Just you wait," she stormed onto the bus. I walked up and Grover and I sat at the back as far away from her as possible. We drove away from Yancy Academy. I glanced out through the window and saw the colourful forests, clear blue skies and New York City in the distance. No matter what Nancy would throw at us, we were gonna make sure we would have a good trip today. I loved watching the scenery unfold. I saw birds of all sorts flying in the sky. I caught a glimpse of something huge and grey, so high up. Its wings were much bigger than a bird's and then I saw … legs?.
"Grover, look," I whispered.
"What is it?" He asked quietly.
"It looks like a flying horse," I pointed upward and Grover could see the flying creature soaring over the road and the forests. It disappeared out of sight.
"Would you look at that everyone?" Nancy's voice rose. "Jackson's seeing her imaginary friend,". Her mockery triggered an ensemble of laughter.
I was about to shout at her to shut up but Grover grabbed my hand. "Don't bother Phoebe. She's not worth it,".
I sighed and sat back down. As much as I disliked him trying to hold me back, he was right. Causing a commotion would get me kicked out of my sixth school. And that is not a record I wanted to keep.
(Jason's P.O.V)
Misty and I landed on the fresh green grass where all the other Pegasi came to greet us. I loved horses, especially ones that could fly. I would feed them apples and help the satyrs groom them.
"Morning Jason!" the cheery voice was followed by a loud growl and all the other Pegasi flapped their wings and flew away. I turned and saw a nine-year-old kid with brown hair and blue eyes accompanied by a brown bear and a white furry wolf. Misty was not afraid of the wild animals. Like me the kid wore an orange camper shirt and a beaded necklace, he had three beads and a flower attached to the string.
"Hey Cody,".
"You look like you've had a nice flight,".
"I needed to clear my head,". Akeda the wolf pawed at my legs and I bent down to stroke her silky fur. Tuastos the bear roared gently in my face and I stroked her snout. She bellowed in bear language, followed by a whimper.
"She senses you are discontented," Cody translated.
I nodded. "The same dream just keeps happening,".
"You should definitely talk to your dad about it,". I pursed my lips to the word 'dad'. "Jason, he's raised you since birth. I think he would love it if he called you 'dad',". Before the conversation could continue, I saw Luke and Annabeth over Cody's head. They jogged over.
"We were looking all over for you,". Luke patted my back.
"Sorry, I stormed off, guys. I needed to clear my head,".
"Don't let Clarisse get to you," Annabeth consoled. "She's just jealous with how well you've improved in combat. Looks like Misty had a good flight,".
"She did," I watched as Cody stroked her snout. He was very good with animals being the youngest son of the goddess of the hunt and all. "This time we flew over the Hudson Valley. I saw a school bus. But nobody spotted us,".
"Good. Because Chiron would …," Annabeth was interrupted by the loud call of my name. I looked up and saw a strong centaur of brown fur with crossed arms. I was in big trouble. "I'll see you guys in a bit,". I walked out of the fields, past the cabins and the amphitheatre to the big house. I followed the gruff centaur inside towards a table where a Hawain-topped man awaited us. He had black bushy hair, he was sipping on Coke and he did not like the sound of my presence.
"You're in trouble, young man," he scolded.
"Mr. D. I would like to speak to Jason alone," Chiron requested.
"Good. Because I don't even want to be in here,". He scooted off, not even bothering to give me a second glance.
"How many times have I told you? No flying off without my permission,".
"Chiron, it was just one simple flight. I needed to clear my head,".
"You are supposed to be watched over at all times,".
"I can take care of myself. And I couldn't bear to be near the other kids again,".
"No matter what they say, you shouldn't let them get to you,". The problem with Chiron was no matter how many times he or Luke or Annabeth reprimanded them, they would never stop. I hung my head down. "Come on, my boy. What's wrong?".
"I had another dream last night,".
"Oh, Jason,".
"I can't help it!". I realised how rude I was being. "I'm sorry. I just wish they would end. Everyone's making fun of me for it, and I just can't stand Clarisse,".
"Just leave Clarisse to me. I take it Luke's been taking care of you,".
"Yes. He was by my side as I woke up from that nightmare, and he wouldn't leave even when I was asleep. I feel like I'm wearing him down,".
"Nonsense. Luke cares for you greatly and so do Annabeth and Cody,". I sighed remained quiet and froze in that spot. Chiron sat down with his crossed arms. "I've raised you since you were a baby. I know that I'm not your dad, but I promised myself I would keep you safe. And the only way I can do that is if you tell me what you dreamed up last night. Please, Jason. Let me help,".
My heart twisted itself into a knot and I sat down in a chair. "I was in a wasteland and there was this pit that didn't have a bottom. With every word that I spoke, Chiron was becoming shakier by the minute. Still, I didn't stop. "And there was this deep voice speaking to me, telling me that he needed a forbidden child and me to complete his thief's plan and help him rise again,".
I opened my eyes again and saw that Chiron had frozen. "Chiron … please. You're freaking me out,".
"Then it has begun,".
"What are you talking about?".
Chiron looked at his watch. "Great socks. I have to be at the museum in less than an hour,".
I realised he was right. With all the thinking and clearing my head, I had completely forgotten he was meant to go out on a museum trip. "I'll get my things,"
"No. I will not let you leave this camp,".
"But you said you were gonna take me with you today,".
"I'm sorry but I can't let you leave now. If you're having these dreams, it means your life is in danger,".
"But Chiron …,".
"No!" his booming voice made me jump. You're to stay here and that's an order!". I sprinted out. "Jason!" his voice was desperate. He regretted speaking to me like this. I made my way to the shores of Long Island Sound. I stared out at the great vast sea. I would often do this every day thinking about things. What was Chiron so afraid of? Why couldn't he see that I was capable of taking care of myself? For six years I've been trained to wield a sword, shoot arrows and ride horses. Why was that not enough to release me from his protective hold?
"Jason!" the three voices cried out and I saw Luke, Annabeth and Cody running over to me. Akeda and Tuastos behiare nd them. They sat beside him.
"What happened?" Annabeth asked.
"I told him about my dream, and he freaked out. Now he's not gonna take me to the museum like he promised me,".
Luke rolled his eyes. "When he's gonna stop treating you like you're a child?".
"We are kids," Cody pointed out, making me fume. "Nonetheless you're right, Luke. Jason can take care of himself. And today was his first chance to get out there,".
For a moment we were all quiet. Then I stared out across the sea and watched as the gentle waves splashed to and fro against the shore, not wanting to be restrained. "I'm still going to,". I stood up.
"What?" Annabeth asked. "You're gonna disobey Chiron's orders again,".
"I need to get out there, guys. I can't spend the rest of my life in this camp. This may be home. But my instincts are telling me I have to go to New York,".
Annabeth had doubts. "I still don't like this, Jason,".
"He needs this Annabeth. He needs to get out there," I smiled that Luke was on my side.
"And we should go with him," Cody said.
"No! If we all go, we'll all be in trouble. I wish I could take you guys but I can't bear for any of you to get into trouble because of me,".
"At least take Akeda with you," Cody stroked his wolf at his feet, and I nodded. Luke fetched me his warmest coat, and Annabeth found the biggest bag she could find. Together whilst everyone was busy training in combat and Mr. D was constantly gorging on Diet Coke and other unhealthy drinks, we snuck out of the camp, and up the nearby hill towards a tall pine tree. Also known as Thalia's tree. Annabeth genuflected and touched its strong bark. Luke eyed the tree with a sad look. I knew the story behind that tree. So did Cody. But we dared not to talk about it a lot. We ran down the hill towards the main road where a nearby bus was pulling up towards the bus stop.
"It's now or never," I said. "And don't worry, guys. I'll be back before you know it,".
"Just be careful," Cody begged.
"You know I will,". I offered my fist and Cody punched it. Akeda roared playfully, and I opened my back. She climbed inside and I made the hole big enough for her to breathe through.
Annabeth hugged me tightly. "Just be back before nightfall,". I was so glad to have a sister like her.
"You know I will,".
I gave Luke a big hug. I turned to mount the bus. "Hey Jason," I looked back to Luke.
"Be safe,".
I brought the ticket with some money Annabeth had stolen from Chiron's office and boarded the bus. As it drove off, I rushed to the back and waved through the window at my loving friends. They disappeared, turning into black blurs. I sat down quietly, holding up a golden knife blade Luke had forged for me years ago. Akeda poked her snout of the back and I stroked her head to keep her calm.
(Phoebe's Point of View)
After seeing that flying black Pegasus, I was in no mood to be on the lookout for any more creatures invisible to all eyes except mine. We arrived at the big museum, and a white-bristled man in a wheelchair wearing glasses named Mr. Brunner was waiting for us. Nancy and her friends laughed at his state, but I was quick to shut them up.
We entered the great hall where statues of stone and bronze towered over us like giants. "What you see here, they are not fiction,".
They are not fantasises. That you see here are the truest and deepest parts of yourselves. Friends … the gods … the monsters, the heroes you see here in this room are reminders of what we are capable of. Now, on your worksheets, you want to choose one of the subjects you see here and describe it. " Once again, as I looked at the English words on my sheet, the letters danced off the page not wanting to be read. "Not just how it looks, but how it makes you feel,".
I stayed where I was staring up at the first statue that was right in front of me.
(Five Years Ago)
"That is my favourite hero," My beautiful mother Sally pointed to the statue of the mighty hero carrying the severed head of a woman with snaky hair. "Perseus,".
"Is he a hero?".
"Yes. And do you know why?".
"Because he kills monsters. Like that gorgon," I pointed to the head.
"And what makes you think she was a monster? Not everyone who looks like a hero is a hero and not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster,".
"Tell me about this hero,".
"Well, when Perseus was a very little boy, he and his mother were cast into the sea in a casket by an evil king. Alone. Afraid. And at night, his mother would whisper in his ear, 'Hold fast, Perseus'. Brave the storm that was made to break us for we are unbreakable as long as we have each other'". I loved her story-telling. "And against all odds, he managed to find his way to a happy ending. And that's what I want for you,". She gave me a warm smile. I was her world. She loved me more than anything.
"Phoebe?".
(Present Day)
I jumped. "Mum?"
"I'm right here, sweetie," Nancy mocked. "Mummy's here," The other girls laughed.
"Just shut it, Nancy,". I snapped.
"Miss Jackson …," a stern voice uttered. I turned and saw Miss Dodds, my algebra teacher. "You will learn to control yourself; do you understand me?".
"Me? But Miss. Dodds, it was …,".
"Do you understand me?".
"She can't help it, Miss Dodds," Nancy jeered. "Phoebe's special. Or so her mother says,". I fumed. I wanted to punch her.
"That's enough,". Mr Brunner's temper silenced them. He rolled over to me. "You pay them no attention, Miss Jackson,".
"Thank you, Mr. Brunner,".
"Don't let what they say get to you. You're not the first child to be treated like that for being who you are. When you're ready to hear what the gods have in store for you, they'll tell you," I pursed my lips. "Here, you'll be needing this," he pulled out a pen from his coat pocket. "You just hang onto that,". He rolled off and I stayed where I was staring up at the statue of Perseus.
Lunchtime came. Grover and I were sitting near a fountain eating sandwiches. I was lucky he was here to keep me from beating up Nancy for insulting my mother this way. "There are all sorts of schools of thought about what drives that kind of bullying," Grover said. "Like childhood trauma, feelings of inadequacy …" I wasn't interested at all. "Look all I'm seeing Phoebe is that. You're not the only troubled kid at Yancy Academy,".
"Nancy may have issues but it's no excuse to take them out on us. We've never done anything to her so why should she treat us that way? It doesn't do any good standing back and doing nothing. Someone's gotta do something,".
"Well then book an appointment with Mr. Kane,".
"That's not enough. She needs a taste of her own medicine,".
"Come on, Phoebe. We're better than that,". I sighed. "Look, I know this place is hard for you. It's hard for me too. But we're not gonna be there forever. There are better places out there. We just gotta stick together until we get out of here,".
"You're right," I nodded. But right after Grover said that a piece of sandwich smacked his face.
I saw Nancy nearby. "Oops. My bad. Guess the goat guy doesn't have good hearing,".
I fumed. "That does it," I slammed my feet on the ground, ignoring Grover's protests. I marched right up to Nancy, still smirking at her. "What is wrong with you? Grover and I are just trying to mind our own business and all you do is make fun of us,". I moved my arms and then all of a sudden, Nancy went flying through the air and splash!
I froze. Did I do that?
"Phoebe pushed me!". She screamed.
Mrs. Dodds marched right up to me. "I warned you to control yourself, Miss Jackson,".
Grover jumped in. "It was my fault, Miss Dodds,".
"We need to talk now," Mrs. Dodds grabbed my arm and pulled me off. Grover tried to go after me but I shook my head, not wanting him to get in any more trouble.
(Jason's Point of View)
Since stepping off that bus stop, I had explored New York City, seeing shops, people wearing funky costumes, and street food being sold, and now I was in front of the museum Chiron had promised to take me to before. I had to keep a low profile if I was to avoid being spotted by Chiron and get back to Camp Half-Blood before my cover was blown. If I could find a good bus on time. It was my first time out of camp, away from his watchful gaze and I wanted to enjoy every moment of it. Akeda tried poking her head out but I told her to stay inside. Although she looked like a white dog in the eyes of everyone around me, there was no guarantee I could take an animal into the museum.
I walked around the museum, spotting the towering statues of the Greek Gods, the main three being Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Out of all these gods, their king and lord of the skies was the one I feared the most. I turned away at once. My hand automatically touched my covered collarbone.
"But it wasn't my fault!" it was the sound of a pre-teen girl.
"Shut up, Miss Jackson,".
I turned and saw a girl my age with long blond hair being pulled by a grey-haired woman, probably a teacher with a strong grip despite her age.
"It was Nancy's fault! She made fun of Grover!".
"And so, you think it's right to push her into the fountain?".
"But it wasn't me! I don't know what happened!".
"Control yourself!" the woman pulled on her hair. "Or I will,". She shoved her into a nearby room, avoiding crowds of gathered people looking at them like they were insane. As they did, I noticed two other strange women were close by. Both had grey hair like that other lady but they weren't humans. They were … The girl was …
I froze. The girl was in grave danger.
I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. I promise you the other chapters will come sooner. I must warn you no updates will come on Saturday, Sunday or the following Monday because I'm going on a trip to Edinburgh. I am sorry I can't do as many updates as much as I used to before and I can't keep pace in the stories because sometimes there are times when I prefer writing some stories over others. Nonetheless, I am still going to keep going with them. I am not giving up on them. Please keep sending ideas; they are always wonderful. Big news. Upcoming is the Atlantis (My Version) story. A rewrite of the BBC Atlantis from about ten years ago that was cancelled and I felt it had a lot of potential. It will mix with the Percy Jackson world still. See you all soon.
