Many years after the Mockingjay Rebellion, Panem Museum's director Mercedes Vonheli receives a collection of "Master tapes" of the Hunger Games, and decided to write a history book about each Games as well as the culture and society of Panem. This story was published on AO3, and is rated T for violence and because it's The Hunger Games

31. The Mall Arena

75 Years Chapter 31

Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games.

Following the success of the 30th Hunger Games, Head Gamemaker Coriolanus Snow began the search for his successor as he announces he plans to enter Politics, a decision that was prompted by the death of President Ravinstill. Erasmus Fletcher was instantly named President and immediately set to continue his predecessor's work with oppressing the Districts. A young apprentice Gamemaker, Seamus Anderson, was to be apprenticed by Snow himself. The Arena was inspired by a shopping mall, and the Tributes were a mix; the strong Careers of Districts 1, 2 and 4, the skinny kids from Districts 11 and 12 and the outliers. One Tribute Reaped from District 3, Taranis Musk, was the son of 5th Hunger Games Victor Mmseyone.

District 8: Tullie Reinhold (18), Corduroy Leith (16)

District 10: Quail Plumptre (15), Stilton Bedford (16)

District 11: Butterfly Chansiri (16), Sprout Arnold (16)

The Games:

As the Tributes stood around the Cornucopia, they saw that the Arena was a giant shopping mall. As the gong rang the Tributes ran off, with the powerful Districts 1 and 2 Tributes taking over the Mall's Plaza, resulting in a then record 13 kill Bloodbath. It was Cosmin who made the first kill, slicing the head off a small boy fleeing the carnage.

24th: Rye Campbell, District 9. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Cosmin. Bloodbath.

An older girl was the next to fall, cut down by Nemesis' arrows as she attempted to flee.

23rd: Butterfly Chansiri, District 11. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Nemesis. Bloodbath.

Cosmin and Malachite ambushed a pair of skinny kids. Unsheathing their swords, both hacked and slashed the pair to death, leaving them disembowelled on the white tiles of the mall.

22nd: Mabel Wilkes, District 12. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Malachite. Bloodbath

21st: Haylen O'Brien, District 12. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Cosmin. Bloodbath

A girl was speared through the neck by Ariel's spear.

20th: Dakota Sharman, District 6. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Ariel. Bloodbath

As Malachite searched for Tributes at the Cornucopia, he spotted a small boy from District 3. Grabbing him by the hair, he yanked the boy's head until a loud cracking sound echoed around him.

19th: Taranis Musk, District 3. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Malachite. Bloodbath

Pelagius, armed with a spear, speared through another Tribute

18th: Corduroy Leith, District 8. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Pelagius. Bloodbath

Two Tributes were fighting on the upper levels of the mall. The girls from Districts 9 and 10 fell over the plastic board and onto the floor, the fall killing them.

17th: Bailey Till, District 9. 31st Hunger Games. Fall. Bloodbath

16th: Quail Plumptre, District 10. 31st Hunger Games. Fall. Bloodbath.

A boy grabbed a girl from District 3. Dragging her towards the fountain, he shoved her head over the edge and into the water, holding her until she died.

15th: Curla Decker, District 3. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Cosmin. Bloodbath

Another boy was stabbed as he tried to escape.

14th: Sprout Arnold, District 11. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Malachite. Bloodbath.

A small girl from District 7 was killed as she attempted to flee the carnage.

13th: Palma Oxenbridge, District 7. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Firye. Bloodbath.

Nemesis shot an arrow through the back of a small boy.

12th: Tank Gresley, District 6. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Nemesis. Bloodbath.

Now pleased she made a kill, Firye then grabbed a knife and plunged it into the last remaining outlier Tribute still at the Cornucopia.

11th: Timber Woodcock, District 7. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Firye. Bloodbath.

With the Bloodbath now over, the remaining Tributes scattered around the vast mall. The light of the sun glinting off the glass, through to the white floor now stained red.

Days 2 and 3 passed by without incident, but on Day 4 Zenith entered a shop. As he entered, he slipped on the ground, crashing into a clothing display. The clothes fell on him, suffocating him in a pile of tops, trousers and coats.

10th: Zenith Odegaard, District 5. 31st Hunger Games. Suffocated by clothes. Day 4.

Days 5, 6 and 7 passed by without incident, but on Day 8, Malachite decided to attack a napping Tribute beside several plants. Drawing out his sword, he killed the boy beside the large potted palm tree as a pinging sound was heard from the nearby lift.

9th: Stilton Bedford, District 10. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Malachite. Day 8.

The Final Eight had been decided: Fiyre Tanaka from District 1, Malachite Rohl from District 1, Nemesis Andrews from District 2, Cosmin Rosicky from District 2, Ariel Hussey from District 4, Pelagius Zubimendi from District 4, Tondra Sakata from District 5 and Tullie Reinhold from District 8. A notable curiosity is that the 31st Hunger Games had more female Tributes within the Final Eight, and betting in the Capitol increased.

Day 10 would mark the final day of the 31st Hunger Games. A series of blocked exits into the shops trapped the Tributes into the centre of the Arena. Armed with her bow, Nemesis shot Tullie through the heart.

8th: Tullie Reinhold, District 8. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Nemesis. Day 10.

Tondra, having seen Tullie collapse onto the floor, approached the Careers. Taking out a knife, she plunged the weapon into Malachite's back.

7th: Malachite Rohl, District 1. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Tondra. Day 10.

Drawing out her knife, Fiyre then stabbed Cosmin in the neck.

6th: Cosmin Rosicky, District 2. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Fiyre. Day 10.

Now angry, Nemesis fired an arrow into Fiyre's throat.

5th: Fiyre Tanaka, District 1. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Nemesis. Day 10.

Meanwhile, Ariel and Pelagius had managed to catch up to Tondra. As Tondra was ambushed, she slit Pelagius' chest, the boy dead within seconds.

4th: Pelagius Zubimendi, District 4. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Tondra. Day 10

Picking up Pelagius' spear, Ariel aimed it into Tondra, impaling the District 5 girl.

3rd: Tondra Sakata, District 5. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Ariel. Day 10

As Tondra's Cannon fired, Nemesis picked up her knife to look for the remaining Tribute. Seeing Ariel, she approached the District 4 girl, hoping to return home. Ariel, spotting the danger, reacted, throwing the spear into Nemesis' body as she looked towards her deceased District Partner.

2nd: Nemesis Andrews, District 2. 31st Hunger Games. Killed by Ariel. Day 10.

No sooner than Nemesis' body fell to the ground did the Cannon went off before trumpets rang out as the voice of Lucky Flickerman rang out.

1st: Ariel Hussey, District 4. 31st Hunger Games. VICTOR

Ariel sobbed even closer to Pelagius.

Aftermath:

District 4 welcomed their second Victor. Known for her skills with a trident, Ariel would eventually train District 4's Careers to use the weapon, and it is rumoured that she may have helped Sponsors raise money for Finnick Odair's trident during the 65th Hunger Games. Ariel would not survive the Victors' Purge, being one of the Victors killed.

Fun fact: With District 4's Victory in the 31st Hunger Games, all Districts bar District 12 had at least two Victors.

I wrote half the chapter last month, but decided to finish it off today. With Sunrise on The Reaping coming out next week, I decided to focus on the chapters before and after the Second Quarter Quell. Though it was interesting on Sunday evening when we had a power cut in my area, especially when the whole street went outside to investigate. I won't do chapter 50 until I read Sunrise on The Reaping; I pre-ordered it last week, so I should get it sometime next week.
