Quitting Saint Victor's was the hardest decision Jamie ever had to make. But transferring to Saint Benjamin's was a better choice he noticed. His pay was better and the charts were all electronic. Downing the last of his coffee, he threw the empty paper cup into the trash, walking out of the break room. He was about to head back towards the elevator and up to the fourth floor when he spotted a woman in the corner of the waiting room trying not to draw attention to herself. He slowly approached her.
"Let's get you checked out. Make sure your baby is ok."
The woman tried to scoot away from Jamie.
"I'm ok. I just need to use the restroom."
Red flags began to pop up in Jamie's head by the dozens and he calmly put his hands up in front of him, trying to reassure the woman.
"Everything is going to be ok. I promise Look, your baby is coming. You came in because you needed help. I'm here to help you. I'll have Marina here get you into a wheelchair and we'll get you somewhere a little more comfortable to have your baby, ok?"
The nervous/frightened woman seemed to relent and sat down in the wheelchair Marina brought for her. Jamie quickly followed Marina and the woman he was helping. He watched her posture and facial expression as they entered the elevator. He continued his conversation with her.
"Ok I want you to keep breathing through the contraction. I know it hurts, just keep breathing. That's it. What's your name?"
The woman slumped her shoulders and let out a shuddering breath as the contraction wound down.
"Madeline. That's all your getting out of me."
Jamie nodded and didn't press her further. He figured by the way she was acting she was a very guarded person. She'd probably been hurt more than once.
"Ok Madeline, Marina and I are going to get you more comfortable in a bed and a room of your own."
Madeline darted her eyes left and right as Jamie held the door open to a room and Marina wheeled her in. Another nurse entered and came over to Marina, helped Madeline out of the wheelchair setting a fresh gown on the bed.
Jamie excused himself from the room for a few minutes while both nurses helped Madeline get changed and into bed. It was another five minutes before Jamie knocked on the door. A moment later, Marina opened up the door and ushered Jamie in. She updated him on what was going on.
"I have Madeline started on some oxygen. Her oxygen saturation was 92 percent. She's doing a little better with some nasal oxygen."
Nodding, Jamie turned his attention to Madeline and gave her a sympathetic look.
"How are you feeling Madeline?"
Madeline gave him an unimpressed look.
"Very uncomfortable. I just want this baby out of me."
Jamie took a quiet breath in and let it out slowly.
"I understand. Now do I have your permission to check?"
Madeline gave Jamie an apprehensive look then nodded.
"Yes."
Again nodding, Jamie quickly went over to the sink and washed up, then Marina handed him a mask and she helped him put some gloves on. Taking a seat on the rolling stool Jamie reassured Madeline and tried to keep her calm.
"Ok Madeline. I'm going to have Marina and Jessie help put your feet up here. There we go. This might feel uncomfortable for a minute or two but I'll be as gentle as possible. I want you to take a deep breath for me. That's it."
Madeline winced and looked down towards her feet as Jamie looked over the sheet at her. She frowned and fidgeted slightly.
"What's going on? Is the baby coming?"
Jamie nodded and stayed where he was at, a smile behind his mask.
"Yes. Your baby is on it's way. I see the head. Is there someone you'd like us to call for you to be here with you? A boyfriend? Husband? Sister?"
Madeline shook her head nod and tensed up.
"No."
Jamie refocused her attention.
"Ok Madeline, I want you to give me a big push now. That's it. Another one. There we go. One more. I'm starting to see the shoulders. One more big push and the baby will be out. One more. Alright, looks like you have a very handsome little boy!"
Holding the crying little boy over the sheet, head beamed. But Madeline looked away, a few tears in her eyes.
"I can't do this. I can barely take care of myself. How am I supposed to take care of a baby?"
Jamie nodded in understanding and spoke over the crying baby boy.
"I understand this is scary right now. But there are programs, and we can get you started with some things for you and your son."
Madeline shook her head and winced as she moved her legs back onto the bed.
"I can't take care of him. I'm sorry. Please just take good care of him. He deserves a good home."
Jamie looked Madeline in the eye.
"You should really lie back down Madeline. You still need to deliver the after birth."
Madeline shook her head and managed to get out of bed, ripping the nasal cannula from her nose and reaching for the bag with her clothes under her bed.
"I'll be fine doc. Just please take care of that little boy. He needs a good home."
Jamie couldn't stop her. He wasn't going to keep her there against her will. She had the right to leave against medical advice if she wanted to. Then just like that, Madeline was gone. Jamie, Marina, Jessie and now the Pediatrician were left in the room with the vulnerable baby boy that needed a name and now a home.
"How's he doing Marina?"
Marina smiled at Jamie and placed the little boy inside the plastic bassinet.
"He's perfectly healthy. Has Madeline come back and ask about him?"
Jamie shook his head.
"I don't think she's coming back."
Marina nodded her head and ran her fingers over a named that had been placed on the boy's bassinet.
"We gave him a name."
Jamie peered at the name, a smile coming to his face. Having a seat next to the bassinet, he spoke to him.
"Hi Liam. Remember me?"
Having already washed his hands and was now wearing the proper attire, Jamie placed a hand over Liam who'd been perfectly swaddled by Marina. He'd opened his eyes and was blinking. Jamie knew Liam couldn't see very well yet. Gently scooping him up in his arms, Jamie started to rock slowly in the rocking chair.
"You are a handsome little man. I know its bright and very noisy out here, probably a little cooler than your used to, but it's not so bad. You know, if no one comes to adopt you, my wife and I can give you a home. I've got six other kids you could play with as you got older…"
Jamie knew he would have to talk to Eddie about this first. It wasn't a snap your fingers and done kind of situation.
