Chapter Thirty-Nine
Scolding
Back with the Disciples, they had stopped for a rest break after travelling for another couple of hours since Aurora managed to head off the police.
They had managed to stop at a gas station and Lamia used her heavy disguise to fuel one of them up, and Samson did the same to the other again in a heavy disguise and Pandora did the same.
Now they had pulled over into a large lay by sheltered by trees to have something to eat and rest for a bit before driving onto their next destination.
As they sat together in the back of the vans which were parked with the backs facing each other, Aurora explained what she did.
"...And so I did a wheelie then drove towards them and landed on the roof of the car!" she explained "And the car spun out of control before it crashed!"
"Whoa!" Regan cried "You did that?"
"How did you learn how to do that?" Ravage asked.
"I don't know." Aurora said in an honest tone, "I just, I just knew!" she looked at her hands and at the motorbike.
"It seems before you lost your memory you knew how to ride a motorbike." Lilith said, her eyes staring hard at the Hybrid.
Aurora glanced at the falcon and she felt uncomfortable at how she was looking at her.
Something told the hybrid that the falcon didn't approve of her method of fending off the police the way she did, yet the others seemed rather interested and Diablo was smirking at her as if he was looking at his favourite student.
"You got skills." Diablo said as he sipped his drink "Rather amazing skills which I'm still curious to learn about."
"She might have skills." Lilith spoke up "But what about those officers? They could have gotten hurt!"
"They shouldn't have been trying to chase us." Diablo replied.
"And yet they did." Lilith snapped "They have a job to do, and in a way we drew attention to ourselves!"
"Actually, we did." Regan spoke up raising her hand "They saw me and Aurora."
"Maybe it would be easier you ride in the van." Samson suggested "Then the humans won't see you, as your wings stand out."
"Should we be worried?" Lamia asked "That the police saw Regan and Aurora and their animal forms?"
Diablo shook his head.
"No." he said "We've managed to stay under the rader, some people think we're the mutant animals they've been reading out, and many believe us to be people in costume or seen through the eyes of those under the influence, which is often the case with our victims!"
"True that!" Samson said "Anyone whose seen us, are never believed."
"Yet how long before we're caught?" Lilith asked.
"You've asked that question many times." Ravage said rolling his eyes "And have we been caught yet? No!"
"We cannot get complacent." Seth spoke up "We have to stay ahead and not give anyone the chance to find out what we really are, we may have gotten away with it for ten years."
"Exactly." Ravage said.
"Everyone." Diablo held up his taloned hand.
"As much as Ravage is correct, we haven't been caught or found out, whether by the humans, or even the dragon."
As the raven said Dragon, Aurora blinked as she brought a hand to her temple.
"Dragon?" she thought.
Lilith noticed her do that and narrowed her eyes.
"But Lilith has a point too." Diablo said "We have to be careful, I for one hope that I do all I can to make sure we're never caught, despite the breadcrumbs and clues I have left to make people wonder." he smirked as he thought that.
"Scaring people has it's benefits boss." Ravage said "If it was enough to stop that horrible cult I was stuck in for years, it'll do the same for any other sinners we meet."
"We'll get our chance again Ravage." Diablo smirked "Don't you worry."
"Needless to say I look forward to some more action." Regan agreed and licked her fangs then turned to Aurora.
"What about you?" she asked.
Aurora was brought out of her thoughts and she looked to Regan.
"What?" she asked.
"Away with the fairies?" Rex asked with a chuckle "We'll be on the road again, getting close to our destination and our mission."
"A house filled with sinners." Chastity said "And hopefully somewhere warm to sleep."
"In proper beds and a place to shower!" Samson agreed.
Lilith sighed.
"I will admit, I look forward to that too, having a chance to sleep in a proper bed again, and have shower."
"And use a proper toilet too!" Ravage said.
As the locust said that, everyone laughed.
"Oh yeah, can't tell you how many times I long to use a proper bathroom!" Samson said.
"I'm pretty much used to using the bathroom outside." Rex said "But when we do get the luxury of using a proper toilet, I do not take it for granted."
Aurora chuckled slightly then she looked at Regan.
"I have to agree," she said "Using a proper shower is something I am looking forward to."
"We'll get it soon enough!" Regan smirked.
Five minutes later, whilst the Disciples were packing everything up to continue their journey, Lilith decided to take the opportunity to speak with Aurora alone about her actions with the motorbike and the police that were chasing them.
She lead Aurora a little further away from the vans and motorbike and looked around.
Aurora at first was confused but then given how Lilith had been looking at her since she boasted of what she did earlier, she guessed this was what is was about.
"Aurora." Lilith said "As much as it was good you manages to steer the police away from us, it could have gone badly wrong!"
Aurora blinked.
"Wrong?" she asked.
"You could have killed them!" Lilith said "Those men were just doing their job, the police risk life and limb everyday."
"You think I don't know that?" Aurora asked indignantly "They do risk everything, like a lot of people in the emergency services!"
"And there are those who wish to do them harm." Lilith said.
Aurora was shocked.
"You saying I wanted to harm them?" she asked "I merely wanted us to be rid of them! Would it have been better if I let them catch us?" she challenged.
Lilith curled her beak and her feathers puffed up.
"No." she said "I didn't mean it that way!" she snapped "What I mean is, even though we punish sinners, we do not inflict harm on the innocent! And your stunt, as much as it steered them away, it was dangerous and they could have been seriously hurt or killed!"
Aurora sighed.
"I get it!" she growled but the she felt a twinge in her head as another spark was let off.
She touched her forehead as it felt like a brain freeze.
"This is not who you are..."
"You are not them..."
"This is not our way..."
Aurora placed her fingers on her forehead as she heard the voices in her head as well as the same pain of the brain freeze.
Lilith instantly saw Aurora's pained face and placed a clawed hand on her shoulder.
"Aurora?" she asked concerned "Are you alright?"
Aurora didn't answer, but the voices continued in her head, almost as clear as someone speaking to her in person.
"Fighting with honour...kill if we must...We have rules to follow..."
Aurora screwed her eyes shut then as soon as they had come, the pains in her head subsided and she looked up to see Lilith's concerned face.
"Lilith?" she asked.
Lilith cocked her head.
"Aurora? What happened?" she asked.
"I...I don't know." Aurora said "But I heard voices, as well as felt pains in my head, it's not the first time, ever since you found me."
Lilith frowned harder as she listened then she saw the hybrid look up worried.
"Am I insane?" she asked "Am I...crazy?"
Lilith frown softened and she felt her anger and disappointment fading as she looked at the hybrid's confused and almost fearful look.
The falcon sighed.
"No." she said "I don't think you're crazy, but I think you're confused, when I found you washed up on that rock in Lake Michigan, I had no idea what happened to you, or how you ended up there, only you can tell us, but you have no memories of what happened."
"Do you think what I'm feeling might be my memories coming back?" Aurora asked "That they might be clues to who I really am?"
Lilith looked thoughtful and she began to wonder if she asked enough questions she could trigger the hybrid's memories.
"They just might." she said "But we can't be sure."
Aurora sighed as she remembered that night in the woods when she saw the family of foxes and Regan had come to check on her.
"I want to remember." she said "Yet no matter how hard I try, everything's just a blur."
Lilith stroked Aurora's shoulder.
"It might be a blur for now, but it will come back, you just need time." she said "And maybe some nudges." she thought to herself "If I ask the right questions, I might just trigger something."
"Lilith? Aurora?"
The falcon and Hybrid looked behind them to see the Disciples had finished packing everything up and were ready to move again.
"We better move on now!" Samson called over.
"We're coming!" Lilith called over then turned to Aurora.
"I know I was harsh, and I know why you did what you did, but you must be careful." she said "To the innocents."
Aurora nodded.
"I get it." she said in a softer tone.
"We'll talk more later." Lilith said "But as Samson said, we must best move on."
Aurora nodded, yet she couldn't help but think about those sparks as well as the voices in her head and that word Diablo spoke.
"Dragon..." she murmured as she walked over to the motorbike.
"But there are no dragons...yet why does it strike a cord?"
She revved up the bike and as the Disciples climbed into the vans and they started to drive away.
Pandora placed the helmet on her head and started to ride behind with him, the same troubles in her head.
"Am I crazy?" she thought "But if I'm not, does Lilith suspect I might be from somewhere else? That I am missing? Do I have another home elsewhere? or a family...?"
Lilith gave Aurora her scolding over what she did with the police officers chasing them, yet some more sparks have been set off in the hybrid, could it mean something?
