Before any of the newcomers could act Metal Sonic pounced at top speed, taking advantage of the fact that Sonic and his makeshift team were still on the ground, but when he was about to hit Shadow he used Chaos Control to teleport a few meters back from his position, so that Metal was exposed, Silver then used his telekinesis to freeze him in mid-air.
"Now!... Hurry!" shouted Silver "He's using his own psychokinesis to override mine!"
Shadow wrapped himself in orange lightning and charged at the now immobile Metal Sonic and kicked him back in the air, then used Chaos Control to hit him from angles where he couldn't defend himself, but when Silver was about to help Shadow Metal Sonic turned invisible, thus catching the two hedgehogs off guard he used his telekinesis to throw them several meters backwards.
"...It's too close for the plan to be completed... I can't risk it all here" said Metal Sonic, being aware that despite his acquired skills the explosion had left him so damaged that he would most likely not be able to keep up with a one on two fight.
Metal Sonic started flying at high speed.
"You're not going anywhere!" Silver assured flying in his direction as he picked up debris from the ground and threw it at him.
Metal saw the projectiles heading towards him and performed several Homing Attack to destroy them as he approached Silver. The white hedgehog used his abilities to make a slash in the air and throw it to prevent his enemy from hitting him but Metal used Chaos Control to dodge it at the last moment and plant himself a few meters in front of Silver, then both tried to freeze the other with their telekinesis which led to a tussle between the two to see who would subdue the other with their powers.
"Ngh... These are... MY... POWERS ...IMITATOR!" shouted Silver freezing Metal Sonic in midair and throwing him against the mountain wall. But before impacting Metal took momentum and charged at Silver hitting him in the stomach with his heel, Shadow then appeared between the two using a Chaos Control and tried to hit him with a Homing Atack but before time Metal used the same technique and positioned himself on top of both, he used telekinesis catching the two again off guard and slammed them against the mountain wall which left them unconscious for a moment.
"[BZZT]..." Metal Sonic was starting to spark but still seemed fine as far as he could tell, he continued with his escape plan and using his speed and Chaos Control disappeared from the sight of Sonic and Tails who had been left on the sidelines because of how stunned they were after the explosion.
"Those two seemed to know more about it" Tails said.
"Right, you go help them" Said Sonic who meanwhile went to help Rouge and Espio who were starting to wake up from being unconscious.
"That won't be necessary" Said Silver who was descending slightly until he touched the ground "Sorry guys, it was the perfect opportunity, but it was too fast"
"That's the second time he's played me!" said Shadow as he made his way down the steep slope "Next time I see him I'll make him suffer unspeakably!"
"Okay okay, wait a minute, you obviously know something we don't" Espio said standing up "Before we make any decisions let's talk things out"
"You're right Shadow, they're our friends, they deserve to know" Said Silver looking at Shadow "It's only fair"
"Hmph, whatever" Said Shadow turning his back on them and sinking into his thoughts.
"Well, I'll do it myself, uhh... I guess it's been about... two months since you've had any sign of the Chaos Emeralds, no news of us right? Well..." Silver began to tell them the part of the story they didn't yet know.
(Two months and five days ago)
The security alarm blared loudly in the background at an abandoned Eggman base as Shadow smashed badniks Egg Pawns.
"You are a pathetic defense" Shadow said easily destroying them "I have come for the Chaos Emerald in this facility..." Shadow used the Chaos Spears against the remaining wave, thus finishing off every remaining enemy in the long hallway "...And I'm not leaving until I have it."
Shadow continued to pass through rooms taking advantage of his great speed to not give time to react to the badniks that were abandoned there. Soon he reached a round room, a metal bridge was split in half and had previously connected the entrance through which Shadow had just passed and the cylindrical area in the middle, if you looked down you couldn't see the bottom.
"Hmph... like taking candy from a child" Shadow muttered, he used Chaos Control and just like that he reached the other side of the bridge, he activated the panel next to the giant door blocking the entrance and was able to enter, there it was...
"The Chaos Emerald! I already have four!" said Shadow reaching out to grab it "These jewels choose the most random places to hide, they're all a mystery. But that won't stop me from finding the remaining three!"
Shadow walked out of the base exploiting the entrance and looked at the tracker "The closest one is in Chemical Plant" He thought, but then he sensed a presence "Who's there? Come on out, it's useless to hide..." Shadow said with apparent calmness, knowing that whatever it was he could defeat it if it had hostile intentions and if not too
"Calm down! It's me, Silver!" He said appearing from behind a large rock on a high patch of land "At last I find you Shadow!"
"You were looking for me?" asked the dark hedgehog quizzical "What for? Is there trouble ahead?"
"Uh... actually it's more like saving the present and the future at the same time, saving only the present, so that nothing has to be done in the future" Explained Silver realizing that once said it sounded more complex than in his mind.
"That... problem you speak of, for which you need my help for, Is it happening right now? Shadow raised an eyebrow
"No, but it will shortly In a matter of about five days a meteorite will hit the planet!" Shadow folded his arms as he listened to Silver, the white hedgehog spoke very fast because of nerves "I found out in the future Well, I found out by going back to the from the future to the present and back to the future again!
"You were in your future, you came back to the present, I ignore to what, and when you came back something had changed because of a meteorite impact Is that right?" said Shadow closing his eyes
"Exactly!" Replied Silver "Something very, very Very very radical!" He emphasized floating a little more with each 'very' "Every building on the planet had a purple and black hue, and was riddled with evil robots of those same colors And there was no trace of the people I lived with! I had to stay hidden while I investigated what had happened and then I found it The base of it all, where it all stemmed from was Red Mountain, the mountain was totally fortified!"
"Red Mountain?" asked Shadow
"Yes, in the center of the base was a huge amethyst, I kept investigating and it turns out that it is the core of the meteorite that will impact this mountain, it looked like the energy source of everything" Silver continued "Destroying it in my present wouldn't have solved anything, the only way is to get rid of it now"
"Why are you telling this to me?" Shadow asked.
"I can't turn to the Chaotix because this isn't an investigation, we need direct action to end the problem as soon as possible, and I don't know where to find Sonic, Tails or Amy and Knuckles will surely be protecting the Master Emerald. While I was looking for someone who could help me I saw an explosion near this entrance and I saw you come out."
"That is, because I'm the first one you've seen" Shadow said shaking his head, but suddenly an idea occurred to him "I've been collecting the Chaos Emeralds, after Eggman took control of the planet with his Empire the last thing I want is for him to get his hands on them while no one is the wiser so I've pre-empted that possible move. I'll use them, go Super and turn that meteorite and its core into gravel to grace space."
"That's a very good idea!" Said Silver cheerfully "Let me help you with it!"
"I'll take care of it on my own" Shadow said crisply.
"Come on! It's something that affects my future too, I feel responsible for having to take part in this" Said Silver putting his hand on his chest "Besides Two can outweigh one!"
Shadow looked at Silver who looked back at him defiantly.
"Hmh, you're just like him, once you make a decision you don't back down easily... Okay... At the moment I have four Chaos Emeralds, and I have the location of the remaining three, you go get Chemical Plant's" Shadow showed him the tracker he had been using to let Silver know where in the entire area the Emerald was located.
"Got it!" Silver surrounded himself with a bluish aura and floated higher.
"I'll go get the other two" Shadow explained 'When you've gotten yours let me know over the intercom' He tossed him an intercom which the white hedgehog put to his ear, Shadow did the same with his own
"We'll be in touch" Silver said testing it, he then flew off at full speed.
Shadow plugged in his intercom "Silver... Chemical Plant is in the opposite direction"
"... Uh... Yeah... I was taking an... an alternate route" Silver excused himself.
Shadow watched as Silver flew by in the distance flying in the opposite direction from where he was headed
"I hate teamwork..." Shadow muttered shaking his head and with the intercom deactivated.
(Present day)
"So there we went" Shadow continued to recount from the present "The idea was simple: search for the Chaos Emeralds and pulverize the meteorite before it hit the earth."
"And we had it all set up" Said Silver
"And where does Metal Sonic and your appearance of the meteor core fit in?" asked Sonic, to which Tails nodded because like everyone else listening they still didn't see the point"
"Now we come..." Continued Silver "Although I'm telling you that the being you had faced is no longer Metal Sonic."
"What do you mean it's not?" asked Rouge.
"What exactly do you mean by it wasn't Metal Sonic? We saw him, he looked a lot like the usual Metal Sonic" asked Espio.
"Now you'll understand..." Shadow continued.
(Two months ago)
"Well that's it!" said Silver excitedly "We've got all the Emeralds! Just in time, you can already see the meteorite in the sky!"
"The meteorite is supposed to hit Red Mountain in a few hours, right?" asked Shadow.
"Yes, the meteorite blew up against the side of the mountain" Silver confirmed "Creating a perfect flat spot to site a base, and that base will happen to be the entire mountain in 200 years"
"We're in the perfect place to intercept it" Said Shadow deploying the Emeralds.
"Let's get to it!" Said Silver very focused
The Chaos Emeralds surrounded both hedgehogs, there was a huge golden flash and a column of light shot up into the sky. Out of it came Super Shadow and Super Silver. They both shot off at breakneck speed into space, Shadow was ahead of Silver. They flew high until they had the meteorite a few hundred meters away.
"We have to drill through the outer layer!" shouted Silver to make himself heard "The energy source was the core! That's what we have to prioritize destroying! It occurred to me that...!
"You talk too much!" Shadow interrupted him, the black and red hedgehog used the Chaos Spears and threw them against the meteorite, which made cracks on its surface "It's not going to give us time to break the whole meteorite" He thought looking at the distance that separated them from the planet "I have to focus on attacking a precise place and get to the core".
"We have to focus on attacking a precise spot and get to the core that way!" Silver said
Shadow nodded and both hedgehogs charged head on Shadow with his fist in front and Silver with his foot in front, coming together to make a coordinated attack and strike at the same time.
"AAAAAAAHHH!" shouted Shadow and Silver as he became more and more enveloped in a golden and white aura.
The attack hit full impact and as expected they created a gap in the outer layer of the meteorite, but then they saw that as they reached the core of what looked like a giant amatsite they could go no further.
"Phew... How is that possible!" Said Silver "We can't go any further!?"
"Ngh... But what is this!?" Shadow said quizzically
The two Super hedgehogs concentrated all their energy and tried to smash whatever was preventing them from getting through the meteorite.
"HILARIOUS!" Said a deep voice sounding inside their heads "JUST THAT YOU HAVE COME CLOSE IS A VICTORY ALREADY! MY CONQUEST IS INEVITABLE!"
"Who said that!" Shadow demanded to know.
"Show yourself!" said Silver staring into space.
Then the core created a shockwave of purple lightning.
"CHAOS CONTR-!"Shadow and Silver started to say but it was too late, the shockwave stunned them and out of the core came two purple beams that latched onto the two hedgehogs, they turned into a white glow for a second and then disappeared.
From deep space the meteorite was heading towards the surface of the planet Mobius following an erratic trajectory, the space body collides with Red Mountain. Because of the impact the outer layer of the meteorite exploded but the core is intact, it is a dark crystal of irregular shape with sharp and pointed edges, it seems that instead of reflecting it expels the light it receives, and it has a thick and dark aura around it.
(The present)
"So... the meteorite got you?" Rouge asked incredulously.
"At first we didn't know whose voice that was, but after the purple beams latched onto us and we both really disappeared what it did was something similar to sealing us inside along with the Chaos Emeralds. It was a strange feeling, like being in a dream and not being able to move, the only good thing is that we know his motivation" Silver explained "Being trapped somehow we were also in touch with his thoughts. It turns out that the Amethyst of Reverse Chaos can create replicas of what it traps and also create an energy field around it, as long as it is deployed it is not only invulnerable, but it can 'add' the ability of the enemies it comes in contact with to the base ones and replicate it in a body, in its primal form it can't do anything, it needs a vessel.
"That's why Metal Sonic could do Chaos Control!" Said Tails
"And while we were at it that's why he could add all our abilities to his" Said Sonic, who was with sitting cross-legged while listening to the story.
"That's another thing to explain" Said Silver hastily "When we told you that that was no longer Metal Sonic we meant that although in body he is the same, more or less, the Amethyst has taken control over him, Shadow and I could tell that he took a body the moment Doctor Eggman added the Amethyst of Reverse Chaos to him as a power source"
"That is to say that the Amethyst owns Metal's body" Espio said.
"That's right, and of course..." Shadow replied "he's opted for the smart thing to do: He hasn't done anything suspicious, he's been acting like the real Metal Sonic, (except for the talking, but the Doctor hasn't made a big deal about that) he's going to let Doctor Eggman lay it all out for him and when the timing is perfect, the 'Birth of Eggman's Neo Empire', Amethyst will show his true intentions..."
"...He'll take Eggman out of the way and turn it into HIS empire" Silver said "He's been subtly capturing badniks for two months so the Doctor wouldn't notice the same way he did to catch us, so he'll have a whole army to himself, let's hope he can't pass our abilities to his copies."
Shadow punched a cart with his fist "Damn him! I swear he won't catch me off guard a third time! I'll reduce him to rubble!"
"Well!" Sonic said jumping to his feet "Then we've got ourselves a new target!"
"We have to get there before it's too late!" said Tails "Metal must have gone to where Eggman is!"
"True, but we don't know where he is" Said Espio "He's got that advantage."
"Hmm... Amethyst said earlier that Eggman wasn't there because he was preparing the base, so this one where we are right now can't be" Sonic observed crossing his arms.
"That's right, well spotted Sonic" Said Silver.
"We need to investigate this facility, maybe there's some clue as to where Doctor Eggman is right now" Said Rouge rising from the ground
"I'll help you with that" Said Espio
"Hey so those colored glows that shot out from the core of the Amethyst were the Chaos Emeralds right?" asked Sonic to Silver.
"I think so, of course the two of us don't have them anymore, when the Amethyst sealed us inside they separated from us" Silver replied rubbing his chin.
"Well, I hope Metal Amethyst doesn't find them while we're looking for him" Sonic said imagining the worst.
The whole group left the mine area and headed towards the nearest door, eliminated a few badniks and entered the computer room.
