Fie weaved her way through the crowd, scanning for her next group to chat with when she spotted Rean standing with his family. He was deep in conversation with his parents, Teo and Lucia, while Elise stood beside them, radiating her usual poise. Rean, dressed in a crisp, tailored suit, looked particularly dashing tonight, though his unassuming demeanor was still as evident as ever.
Fie approached with a grin on her face. "Rean! There you are. Looking sharp tonight, huh? Suit's working for you."
Rean turned to see her, smiling warmly. "Oh, hey, Fie. Thanks. You're not looking too bad yourself."
Fie leaned against a nearby pillar and smirked. "Not bad, huh? High praise coming from you. But seriously, you're like a total lady killer in that suit."
"I don't think that's true. I mean, I don't think I've ever made a lady swoon, let alone a bunch of them." Rean chuckled.
Fie stared at him for a moment, wide-eyed, before bursting into loud, uncontrollable laughter. She laughed so hard she had to hold her sides, and a tear escaped, trailing down her cheek. "Oh, oh Aidios, Rean! You—" she gasped between laughs. "You really believe that? That's too good!"
Rean raised an eyebrow, clearly confused. "What? What's so funny?"
Elise, who had been quietly smiling at their banter, finally spoke up, her tone exasperated but affectionate. "Brother, you're either oblivious or the humblest man alive. I've seen how some of the girls at the academy look at you."
Rean's parents exchanged amused glances, Lucia covering her smile with her hand while Teo chuckled.
"Rean, dear, you've always had a certain charm about you. Perhaps you just don't notice it," Lucia said.
"I think you're all giving me way too much credit," Rean sighed.
Fie wiped her tear away and caught her breath, still chuckling. "Oh, Rean, never change. You're too much. But for real, you're a good guy, and that's why people are drawn to you. It's not just about looks, you know?"
"Thanks, Fie," Rean said with a smile.
"You see, Brother?" Elise chimed in, "Even Fie's admitting it. Maybe you should start listening."
Rean sighed again, though his smile didn't waver. "Alright, alright. I'll think about it."
Fie stretched and gave a little wave. "Alright, I'm off to see who else I can bother. And Rean, knowing you you'll wanna pat my head later. Since it's a special night, I guess it's fine, so come find me after. See you all later."
Lucia chuckled while Teo gave a hearty laugh, and Elise simply smiled fondly. Rean just shook his head, clearly resigned to being the subject of their good-natured ribbing.
As Fie walked away, she looked back and saw Rean's family together, laughing and happy. It was a sight that warmed her heart.
As the evening progressed, Fie spotted Laura near one of the refreshment tables, chatting with Victor Arseid and a few other guests. Laura caught her gaze and gave a small wave, excusing herself from her conversation to meet Fie halfway across the floor.
"Fie," Laura greeted warmly. "How's your mingling going so far?"
Fie smiled, holding her hands behind her back. "Not bad. Been talking to all kinds of people. Even got Rean to think about his status as Lady Killer a little bit."
Laura chuckled, shaking her head. "I imagine that was a sight. He never does quite know how to take compliments, does he?"
"Not even a little." Fie grinned. "What about you? I saw you chatting it up with your dad and some of the other nobles. Getting any good stories?"
"It's been wonderful. And he seems to be enjoying himself, which makes me happy. It's such a joy having everyone here," Laura said.
Fie stepped closer, her smile softening. "Yeah, it's been a great night so far. And hey, you've been mingling like a pro. I saw you even chatting with Patrick. Didn't expect that."
Laura smirked. "He's come a long way since our first year, hasn't he? It was a pleasant conversation, though I think he was trying a little too hard to be charming."
Fie laughed. "Oh, Patrick. But hey, as long as he's not calling me a Jaeger Tot anymore, I'll take it."
Laura reached out, gently brushing her hand against Fie's. "It's been a special night, hasn't it? To think, we've come this far."
Fie nodded, lacing her fingers briefly with Laura's. "Yeah, it really does. Maybe we can cap it off with a fantastic make out session later."
Laura's cheeks flushed slightly as she leaned in and gave Fie a soft kiss. It wasn't too long, but it was heartfelt, and for a moment, the noise of the party seemed to fade into the background.
When they pulled back, Laura's smile was radiant. "I will do my best. Though I'm still very much fumbling through such things."
"Me too. But fumbling through it with you is great," Fie said, her grin teasing but her tone sincere.
After a moment, Laura straightened. "We'll have more time together soon. Once the dances are done, we'll explore as a couple like we planned."
"Yeah," Fie replied, giving her hand a squeeze before stepping back. "Now, go show everyone why you're the sword queen. I'll catch you later."
With a final shared look, they parted again, both feeling lighter and more connected than ever as they continued navigating the special night ahead.
The room buzzed with energy as Fie's sharp eyes caught sight of two familiar figures entering the venue—Xeno and Leo, dressed sharply but still carrying that unmistakable air of Jaeger swagger. Without a second thought, she darted through the crowd and practically launched herself toward them.
"Xeno! Leo!" she called, her voice light and excited.
The two Jaegers turned at the sound of her voice, wide grins spreading across their faces.
"There's our little tiger!" Xeno said, opening his arms as Fie slid to a stop in front of them.
Leo chuckled warmly, resting a massive hand on her shoulder. "Look at you, Fie. All grown up and turning heads tonight."
Fie snorted, brushing off their compliments even as a faint blush crept up her cheeks. "Oh, come on. You guys always say stuff like that. I could wear a potato sack, and you'd still say I looked great."
"Well, you'd make it work," Xeno said with a wink.
Leo crossed his arms, looking around the room. "This is some party. You've got quite the crowd here, Fie. You must be proud."
"Yeah, it's been great seeing everyone and catching up. But I'm really glad you two could make it. That you're here for me."
"Wouldn't miss it for the world, squirt," Xeno said, giving Fie a pat on the head.
Fie rolled her eyes, but the warmth in her smile didn't fade. "Anyway, I'm glad you're here. And I actually wanted to ask you something."
Xeno raised an eyebrow. "Oh? The tiger's got questions for us?"
Fie hesitated for a brief moment, glancing around to make sure Laura wasn't nearby, then crossed her arms. "If Laura and I were to, you know… get married someday, would you two give her your blessing?"
For a second, both men were silent, exchanging a glance that spoke volumes. Then Xeno burst out laughing, while Leo let out a deep, amused chuckle.
"Blessing? Fie, you're asking us?" Xeno said, clutching his sides.
"Fie, you're family to us. If you've found someone who makes you happy and treats you well, of course, you'd have our blessing," Leo said.
"Yeah, anyone that treats our Fie well has our blessing!" Xeno nodded. "And if they ever hurt our Fie, well…" he trailed off, letting out a laugh.
"Indeed. I am of the same mind," Leo nodded.
"Thanks, guys. That means a lot to me," Fie said.
"You've grown up so much, Fie. We're proud of you," Leo said.
Xeno nodded, giving her a teasing grin. "But if Laura ever makes you cry, just say the word, and we'll take care of her."
Fie snorted. "As if Laura would ever do anything like that."
"True," Xeno said with a shrug. "Still, the offer stands."
Fie smiled and stepped back, giving them both a playful salute. "Alright, I'm gonna let you guys roam and raid the buffet. Just don't cause too much trouble."
"No promises," Xeno called as she turned to head back into the crowd, her heart lighter than ever.
Not long after Fie parted ways, Laura approached Xeno and Leo with a composed air, her elegant posture reflecting her noble upbringing but softened by her genuine intentions. She knew these two men, whom Fie essentially considered her uncles, were formidable figures in their own right. Their easygoing demeanor belied the sharpness of their eyes, and as Laura neared them, she felt the weight of their attention turn toward her.
"Ah, Laura," Xeno greeted with a relaxed smile, his arms crossed loosely over his chest. "We were wondering when you'd come over. You're Fie's partner, after all."
"Good to finally meet you properly," Leo added, his tone polite but carrying a quiet edge. "We've heard quite a bit about you from Fie."
Laura inclined her head respectfully. "Likewise. Fie speaks highly of you both, and it's clear how much she values your presence in her life. I'm glad to finally have this chance to speak with you."
Xeno's grin widened, but his eyes remained sharp, appraising her. "Well, that's nice to hear. Though, we'd be lying if we said we weren't keeping an eye out to make sure Fie's in good hands."
"Fie's like family to us," Leo said, his voice steady and protective. "We've seen what she's been through, and we know she can take care of herself. But if anyone were to hurt her—well, it wouldn't sit well with us."
Laura met their gazes without faltering, her blue eyes steady and sincere. "I understand completely. Fie means the world to me. I assure you both, I would never do anything to harm her. My only wish is to stand by her side and support her in all that she does."
There was a beat of silence as Xeno and Leo exchanged a glance, a silent conversation passing between them. Then Xeno chuckled, the tension in his posture easing.
"Well, I have to admit, that's a solid answer," he said, a genuine smile breaking through. "Fie's got good instincts, and she clearly sees something special in you."
Leo nodded, though his expression remained serious. "We'll hold you to that, Laura. Fie's happiness comes first, and if you ever need advice on how to navigate things, don't hesitate to reach out."
Laura allowed herself a small smile, her confidence growing. "Thank you. I'm glad Fie has such strong and supportive figures in her life."
"You're alright, Laura. Just keep treating Fie right, and we won't have any issues," Xeno said with a laugh.
After a bit more casual conversation, Laura excused herself, feeling a sense of relief and satisfaction. As she walked away, she reflected on the interaction, her heart lighter. She felt that it had gone well, and the approval of Fie's surrogate uncles meant more to her than she had anticipated. Fie's world was full of remarkable people, and Laura was grateful to be a part of it.
Laura made her way through the grand venue, the lively chatter and laughter of the celebration surrounding her. It didn't take long for her to spot Prince Olivert and Princess Alfin near an elegantly set table, the two sharing a lighthearted exchange. Alfin's musical laugh rang out as Olivert made a dramatic gesture with his wine glass.
"Your Highnesses," Laura greeted, bowing respectfully but with her characteristic warmth.
"Ah, Lady Arseid!" Olivert exclaimed, his smile as dazzling as ever. "Or should I say, the pride of the Arseid school? You honor us with your presence."
"Please, there's no need for such formality," Laura replied with a small smile. "It's good to see you both enjoying the festivities."
"Laura!" Alfin chimed in, her eyes sparkling with delight. "I was hoping we'd get a chance to talk tonight."
Laura nodded. "I feel the same way, Your Highness. And congratulations on this marvelous event—it's truly a night to remember."
"Thank you," Alfin replied, her cheeks tinged with a faint blush. "Though much of the credit goes to Mother and the palace staff. Still, I'm so glad everyone could come together like this."
"Speaking of coming together," Olivert interjected with a playful gleam in his eye, "I couldn't help but notice you and young Miss Claussell seem particularly radiant tonight. Might I assume that love is in the air?"
"Fie and I have grown quite close, yes," she said, her voice steady but gentle. "She's very dear to me."
"Ah, young love," Olivert said wistfully, placing a hand over his heart. "It's a treasure to be cherished, especially in these tumultuous times. And may I say, you two make a splendid pair."
"Thank you, Your Highness," Laura said with a small bow of her head.
Alfin clasped her hands together, her expression earnest. "You and Fie truly are wonderful together. I can see how much you care for each other—it's inspiring."
Laura's smile softened. "I feel fortunate to have her in my life. She brings a sense of balance and joy that I never knew I needed."
"Balance and joy," Olivert mused, his tone thoughtful. "Such qualities are the foundation of any lasting bond. I must commend you, Lady Arseid, on your unwavering dedication to both your partner and to your family's legacy. Victor must be incredibly proud."
"I strive to honor my father's teachings and the Arseid name," Laura said earnestly. "But I also wish to carve my own path, as he has encouraged me to do. This celebration reminds me of how interconnected our paths truly are, and how much we have to learn from one another."
"Wise words, as always," Olivert said with a smile.
Alfin nodded in agreement. "And you inspire everyone around you, Laura. I have no doubt you'll continue to do great things, both for the Arseid school and for those lucky enough to call you a friend."
"Your kind words mean a great deal," Laura replied shyly, her cheeks slowly reddening. "I hope to live up to them in all that I do."
The three shared a moment of quiet understanding, their mutual respect and camaraderie evident.
"Now," Olivert said with a mischievous grin, "if you'll excuse me, I spread a bit more of my unique charm. But do save a dance for me later, Lady Arseid—it's been far too long since I had the pleasure."
Laura chuckled lightly. "Of course, Your Highness. I'll look forward to it."
As Olivert departed, Alfin stayed behind for a moment, her expression warm. "I'm so glad we got to talk, Laura. You're truly someone I admire."
"Thank you, Your Highness," Laura said sincerely. "And please know the admiration is mutual."
With that, the two women shared a smile before Alfin rejoined the crowd, leaving Laura with a sense of gratitude for the bonds she'd formed with such remarkable individuals.
