Demon's Daughter: Love Across the Divide
Chapter 6
A New Chapter
~Gwen's POV~
Darkness.
Silence.
I lay on my bed in the darkness in my bedroom. Staring up at the star covered painted ceiling Charlie and Vaggie painted for me. The stars glow-in-the dark. A surprise touch Charlie had put in for me. Looking at the stars helped me relax and forget the stress of the world. Especially when I sit in the dark when the lights are off or it's dark outside. Whenever I'm surrounded by darkness, I feel at peace with myself. The darkness is like a warm blanket. Wrapping its arms around me. Embracing me in a warm hug. This is my comfort zone.
Being engulfed in the darkness, away from reality felt relaxing. As long as nobody disturbed me during my quiet time, I can relax for as long as I want. That's why I always put a sign on my doorknob with the words 'Do Not Disturb' on it. I don't want anyone coming in my room without permission. Anyone who does will be in trouble. I close my eyes and let myself become one with the darkness. Take me away. Drown me in a sea of never-ending night. Silence is golden. Nothing but my thoughts to fill in the empty space. Least till a loud knock on the door disrupts my tranquility. My eyes shoot open as I sit up and turn my attention to the door. Apparently the 'Do Not Disturb' sign on my door means nothing to whomever is knock on the door. Groaning, I mumbled under my breath as I got up to answer the door. This better be freaking important.
Opening the door, I was greeted by a familiar face, my sister. She looked guilty for disturbing me. Giving me an apologetic smile, she spoke her mind. "Hey Gwen, I'm sorry for bothering you but I was hoping we could talk."
"Sure Charlie, we can talk. Come on in." I stepped aside giving Charlie space to step inside. We walked to my bed and sat down.
"So, Gwen, I know it's not my place to tell you what to do, but as your big sister I feel I should tell what's on my mind," Charlie looked nervous as she rubbed the back of her neck. "I feel like you and dad ended your conversation on the wrong foot. Is there a way the two of you could talk about this in a more...um, productive manner? Just, sit down like adults and talk." She gave me her best innocent smile.
It was obvious she wanted me to talk to dad again. This time without the yelling. I love Charlie, but there's no way I'm talking to dad again. Not after what he had to say over the phone. If I have to listen to another word that comes out of his mouth, I'll rip my ears off.
"Charlie, I'd sooner rip my ears off before I have another conversation with dad." To put it simply, "I'm sorry, but he doesn't, nor will he ever understand us."
Charlie looked uneased with a hint of guilt on her face. I wasn't trying to be mean, but it's the truth. As painful as it is to accept, she's going to have to face reality at some point. There's no other way. Charlie rubbed her right arm for a few seconds. Her head was looking at the ground. I think she was processing the information while trying to figure out what to say next. Which took about sixteen seconds.
"Okay look, I'm not saying I disagree with you." She said looking at me. "But I can't fully accept that dad won't ever approve of what I'm trying to accomplish." She's getting serious now. "I know dad's going to have his opinion on what I'm trying to accomplish, but you know what Gwen, I don't care. I'm going to prove to him that demons can be redeemed and get into Heaven. No matter how long it takes, I'm going to show him."
Despite how things look now, Charlie's got a lot of spunk. Always staying on the positive side when things look grim. She's something else sometimes. Shaking my head, I couldn't help but break into a smile.
"You're something else Charlie. You truly are something else." I say earning a smile back from her.
"Thanks Gwen and look you don't have to talk to dad now; but it would be great if the two of you could talk about what happened at some point. I don't want you hating dad because of it."
"I just don't understand why he's so negative about your idea Charlie. You're trying to make a difference down here. Why can't he accept that?"
Charlie let out a heavy sigh. "Gwen, I think it's time I told you something important. Come with me to my room."
Tell me something important? Okay, it's not often Charlie has something important to discuss with me, so this has to be serious. I followed Charlie out of my room to her bedroom. Curiosity was taking over my mind. What could it be that she wanted to discuss with me in her room? Following Charlie to her room, I was a tad eager to ask her what she had to tell me, but I decided against it. It was better to wait and see for myself. She was going to tell me anyway, so I waited.
When we got in her room, Charlie went up to her nightstand. Opening a drawer, she pulled out a fancy looking black book with gold trimmings covering it. Gently rubbing the cover, Charlie carried the book over to the bed where I was already sitting. The title read "The Story of Hell" on it.
"It's time you knew the truth about dad and why he acts the way he does towards my dreams and about Hell and mom." Charlie sat beside me, book in her lap. "I should have told you sooner, but better late than never, right?"
She's giving that guilt smile again. What does she have to feel guilty about? Could it be that whatever information is in the book she feels bad for not telling me sooner? I'm not mad at her if that's what she's thinking. She probably had her reasons for not telling me about it until now. If she tells me now, she won't have a reason to feel guilty. I told her myself she had nothing to be guilty about. It's not like she was keeping this from me on purpose.
"Charlie, whatever you have to tell me just tell me now."
"Okay, you're right. Sorry, I just felt guilty for not telling you sooner, but now seemed like a good time to reveal the secrets within this book." Charlie opened the book, pulling back a chunk of pages until she reached the middle. Once there, something magical began to happen.
Okay, I'm going to stop myself right there. Did I really just say magical? Great, Charlie's rubbing off of me. Guess mom was right, siblings tend to rub off of you. Watching Charlie conjure up a small black key before my eyes. She used the key to open the book. Opening the book revealed some sort of magical bubble. Gah! I've got to stop saying that word. I saw some kind of memory bubble that played pictures as Charlie told the story.
"Once upon a time, there was a glowing city protected by golden gates, known as Heaven. It was ruled by beings of pure light. Angels that worshipped good and shielded all from evil. Lucifer was one of those angels. He was a dreamer with fantastical ideas for all of creation, but he was seen as a troublemaker by the elders of Heaven. For they felt his way of thinking was dangerous to the order of their world."
The picture before me showed the universe, Heaven's pearly gates, the angels flying freely, father trying to show his genius to the angels, but being pushed away.
"So, he watched as the angels began to expand the universe in their ways. From the dust of Earth, they created Adam and Lilith. Equals as the first of mankind, but despite this, Adam demanded control, and Lilith refused to submit to his will. She fled the Garden. Drawn in by her fierce independence, Lucifer found her, and the two rebellious dreamers fell deeply in love. Together, they wished to share the magic of free will with humanity, offering the Fruit of Knowledge to Adam's new bride, Eve, who gladly accepted. But this gift came with a curse. For with this single act of disobedience, evil finally found its way into Earth. With it, a new realm of darkness and sin. The order Heaven worked to maintain was shattered."
The scene played out with mom and Adam in the Garden, mom meeting dad, and the first sin Eve committed. Bringing forth darkness to Earth, and the creation of Hell.
"As punishment for their reckless act, Heaven cast Lucifer and his love into the dark pit he had created; never allowing him to see the good that came from humanity. He would only see the cruel and the wicked. Ashamed, Lucifer lost his will to dream, but Lilith thrived. Empowering demon kind with her voice and her songs. And as the numbers of Hell grew, so did its power."
I could see mom using her musical talent to spread her dreams throughout Hell, and dad looking distraught over what happened in Heaven.
"Threatened by this, Heaven made a truly heartless decision. That every year, they would send down an army to ensure Hell and its sinners could never rise against them. But Lilith's hope remained, and her dream was passed down to her precious daughters, the Princesses of Hell."
The scene of the extermination angels and then Charlie and myself played before Charlie closed the book. The key Charlie held in her hand the entire time transformed into Keekee, her cat. How did I not see that coming? Keekee rubbed her head against my leg in an affectionate way. Couldn't help but smile as I stroked her head. I looked up at Charlie who looked a tad distraught herself. Her head was hung low, hand on the book's cover.
"Charlie, are you okay?" I was concerned about why she looked the way she did.
"Sorry, it's just..."
"What? You can tell me."
"I've wanted to tell you that story for as long as I first found out about it myself, but mom asked me not to until the time was right. The story isn't great it's the truth."
I'll admit, the story was informative and a surprise. I never knew dad was such a big dreamer who wanted to make a difference. Only to be cast out for a mistake. He never meant any harm, or for things to take an ugly turn. He thought he was helping. No wonder he's so strict about Charlie's ideas.
I leaned back, looking up at the ceiling. "So, mom was the first human woman and wife of the first human man, Adam. Who is now running the extermination that happens every year in Hell. And Heaven actually made this decision because of mom and dad? That's low, even for a place supposedly free of sin and corruption."
"I know, that's why I want to put a stop to it. To the extermination, to people dying, I want to break the cycle. No one should have to suffer, no matter what they did. They shouldn't have to suffer twice for their mistakes." Charlie spoke in a serious tone.
I get where she's coming from. Hell may not be the greatest place, but not everyone deserved to die again. Especially, not by the hand of angels. Putting a stop to the extermination would be a dream come true in Charlie's case. Not to mention it would save countless lives, and if sinners could be rehabilitated, Hell wouldn't be overcrowded. It did sound like a difficult task to follow through, but I knew if anyone could do it, it was my sister. I grabbed her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. This took Charlie by surprise as she looked at me.
"Charlie, I'm not going to lie. What you're trying to do won't be easy and the road ahead will have numerous bumps that may put a hold on your plans. I want you to know that no matter what comes your way, I'm going to be there for you. I believe in you Charlie, and I believe that together we're going to make a difference down here." As sappy as that sounded, I meant every word I said.
Dad may have given up on his dreams, but I won't let that happen to Charlie. I don't want the same fate to fall upon her. She's got too much of a big heart to lose hope.
Charlie smiled sweetly at me, "Thanks Gwen. It means a lot to me that you believe in my dream this much."
That's when I noticed the tears in her eyes. This proved just how much it meant to her to have support from family. Even if it's just me and mom right now. I don't know if dad will ever come around. Maybe if he gets that stick out of his ass he might. Depending how deep its shoved. Who knows, and who cares.
Yes, I know that sounds harsh, but dad has to come to terms with the fact that Charlie has a dream like he once had. All she wants is his support, and so do I. Is that too much to ask? Maybe he'll come around after he's had some time to think. Who knows, maybe mom will push him in the right directions. She's just a big a dreamer as dad was. If anyone could help bring dad back on the right track it's her.
"Charlie, do you think dad may come around to accepting your dream?" I asked her, "You said he used to be a dreamer, until he lost sight of it. Do you think he'll ever be a dreamer again?"
"I can't say for sure, but it would be great if he did." Charlie says, "Dad had so many big dreams that were crushed by those close to him. I'd give anything to help him bring his dreams to life and see his smile."
"Maybe someday Charlie, someday."
I hope this chapter was alright.
I put some history and feelings in this chapter.
