Katara is frustrated. Her quirk is as weak as ever unless she summons Yue, much to Endeavor's dismay.
Shouto stares at Yue in shock while Katara practices her bending with Endeavor.
He says, "I heard that you summoned a spirit at the USJ, but I never could have imagined this."
Katara smiles at him and shrugs, not sure what else to say.
She's learned that her new quirk won't allow her to summon more than two spirits a day. The first time she tried, she collapsed in her bedroom. No one noticed until Fuyumi came to call her to dinner.
She's also stumbled upon a mystery.
Katara tests her abilities and finds herself able to summon everyone except Zuko and herself. She summons Iroh to figure out what's going on.
Katara says, "Is Zuko missing, or is my quirk malfunctioning?"
Iroh sighs and says, "No, it's not your quirk. Both you and Zuko are missing. We eventually figured out that you're the commonality between all of us, but we have no idea where Zuko went."
Iroh continues, "According to the few of us that outlived you both, you died together after Avatar Korra's death on a secret mission. No one knows what happened to either of you. We do know that shortly after, the spirit portals were opened."
Katara can't remember how she died, has never been able to.
Katara says, "Korra died?"
Iroh smiles and says, "We're all dead. It's another thing we have in common."
Katara says, "It's strange to think that everyone I've ever known has been watching me all this time."
Iroh frowns and says, "Yes, we have, and frankly, many of us are concerned. You keep your head down in your sketchbook constantly, sleep all day, have made no friends, and now you can't stop summoning us."
Katara blinks and says, "How would you feel if you lost everything you'd built up in your life? And then suddenly had access to it again?"
Iroh sighs and says, "There's a reason we don't remember our past lives, and you're the prime example. Everyone here has lost people they loved, you have to move on someday."
Katara pauses. She doesn't really like this conversation.
"Goodbye, Iroh."
"Wait-"
Katara knows she's still here watching her, and she doesn't like it. She feels like a fish in an aquarium.
"Zuko," she tries again.
Nothing.
She sighs.
When Katara walks into the classroom with Shouto, a crowd of her classmates forms around her asking if she's okay and who the goddess she summoned was.
Midoriya says, "Would you mind demonstrating your quirk? How are you able to summon these people. Who are they?"
Kaminari says, "Yeah, I want to see the goddess too!"
Shouto says, "Back off, she's still recovering."
Shouto keeps pretending as if they're close lately.
Ochaco says, "Oh, right. Sorry Hikari! How are you feeling?"
Katara smiles and says, "Like crap, but good enough to be at school."
Iida says, "You're an exemplary student, showing up while injured—an example to us all!"
Then Aizawa walks in and explains the Sports Festival.
Katara wonders how the spirits will go down with the audience. Aang's abilities can be particularly flashy, and Yue seems to draw attention.
Katara is inhaling her cold soba at lunch when Shouto sits with her.
She glares at him and says, "Yes? Did you need something?"
Shouto says, "I'll sit with you today."
Katara gapes at him as he sits down with his cold soba.
Katara then decides to ignore him and continue writing in her diary.
Shouto says, "What are you writing there?"
Katara pauses and says, "I'm writing the story of the spirits I summon. They came with these memories."
Shouto suddenly grabs it from her and looks through the first few pages.
"Avatar: The Last Airbender?" he says.
Katara blushes and says, "It's a working title, now give it back."
Shouto hands it back to her and then says, "I'll go back to my table now, thanks."
Katara wonders what the point of sitting with her was just to leave immediately after.
Katara trains with Yue at her family's dojo that night.
Katara says, "Yue, I don't understand. Why can I only bend at my full power when you're around? My bending has been pathetic my entire life here."
Yue says, "I have a theory, but you're not going to like it."
Katara looks at her and says, "Try me."
Yue sighs then says, "Water is the element of adaptability and change. Water conforms to its container; water goes with the flow. You are not like water right now. You're stuck in the past, rigidly."
Katara says, "So you're saying that I've lost my inner fire? Like that time Zuko and Aang danced with the dragons?"
Yue says, "More like inner water, but yes."
Katara says, "So how do I get it back?"
Yue says, "When waterbenders in the Northern Tribe went into mourning, they often lost their bending until they were able to move forward."
Katara says, "So I have to move on? Just forget about all of you? What if I don't want to?"
Yue says, "Moving on does not mean forgetting. And if you don't, then you'll never be able to bend at your full power without my help. You want to be a hero, right?"
Katara says, "Yes, I do."
Yue says, "You moving forward may make the difference between someone's life and death someday."
Katara unsummons Yue.
That night, Katara hears a knock at her door that night. She climbs out of bed, hides her diary under the covers, and opens her door.
It's Shouto.
Katara says, "You're not supposed to be on this side of the house outside dinnertime."
Shouto says, "I know. Endeavor's been laxer about it ever since Touya passed though, he won't mind just this once."
Katara says, "What was so important that you needed to come over here?"
Shouto says, "There's not really an easy way to say this, aside from… Hello, Zuko here."
"Hello, Zuko here. But I guess you probably already know me, sort of."
Katara pales and says, "Is this some kind of joke? Is this why you wanted to read my diary? This isn't funny Shouto."
He says, "I'm serious, I'm Zuko, and I can prove it. Ask me something only Zuko would know, something you haven't written in your diary."
Katara glares at him and says, "What happened to your mother?"
Zuko explains the story of the Mother of Faces taking his mother's identity in exchange for a new life.
Katara stares at him.
Katara says, "You really are Zuko? How are we both here?"
Zuko says, "You don't remember our mission? How we died?"
Katara shakes her head.
Zuko sighs and says, "I'll explain."
