The UBA congress had convened in the Teapot. Itto and Sara had been getting up to their usual will-they-won't-they shenanigans when Wolfey entered the mansion alongside Kinich and Ororon. The stuffed animal walked sadly to the pulpit and addressed the UBA.
"I'm sorry to inform you all," he said, "the Fatui Harbinger known as Capitano has passed away. He gave his life to save Mavuika and Natlan."
Kinich and Ororon bowed their heads sadly as Wolfey explained how the Captain surrendered his life for the Lord of the Night. Silence fell over the UBA. They all remembered meeting the Captain at the Christmas party. He was a reserved man but a truly honorable one. Though they hadn't known him long, they all would miss him.
Wolfey said, "One of the Captain's underlings delivered a letter to Ororon. The Captain wrote the letter and the courier had instructions to deliver the letter after the final battle with the Abyss. He wished that this letter be read to the UBA and UHA."
Wolfey nodded to Ororon, who came forward and opened the letter.
Dear comrades,
If you are now reading these words, then Mavuika's plan to save Natlan has succeeded. By now, I will have given my life to restore the Lord of the Night and to give the souls within me rest.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for welcoming me to the Christmas Party. Being surrounded by such camaraderie has brought me much comfort. The affection Aether's friends share is truly special, transcending all boundaries of class and region. For a time, it drowned out the screams that haunt my dreams. Although brief, I will treasure the time we spent together.
Do not lament. I have long sought this ending for myself, Natlan, and the souls within me. I wanted this, and I go without any regrets. Farewell, my friends. I go to this sleep gladly, carrying my memories of you all in my heart, as I know you will carry my memory. May we meet again one day, in a world of wonder and beauty.
Ill Capitano
Wolfey finished reading. Bennett and Gaming got a little teary-eyed while Kaveh stared at the table. Somberness hung across the Serenitea Pot as the weight of their loss fell over them. But they all smiled faintly, comforted by the Captain's final words.
Choking back a sob, Itto got up and raised his cup of Fonta.
"To the Captain. Our friend."
"To the Captain," replied everyone.
After that toast, they held a small wake with the UHA. Everyone shared stories of the Captain. Noelle mentioned a time he offered her sword instruction. Arlecchino and Tartaglia shared how much they respected their powerful colleague.
They were all saddened by the loss, but the wake was not one marked by tragedy. Rather, they celebrated the life of a mighty warrior, thanked the world for the gift of his life in theirs, and prayed they meet again one day.
