Heloooooooo everyone!
So I'm back with another Sokeefe scene! Howler43, suggested that I rewrite the ability restrictor fiasco where Keefe was someone to comfort Sophie, and (of course) I loved it! Because it's a rewrite, I'm refraining from reading the chapter again, otherwise it'll be too similar to the Shanon Messenger version! This might have a little teeny tiny, itsy, bitsy, cliffhanger, but it's just as sweet as the others :)
Sophie woke up to a horrid reality. She was in a constant state of agony for who knows how long, before Edaline walked into her room.
"Sophie?! Are you okay?" She asked in a panicked voice.
Sophie's only response was a groan. Edaline scrambled for her Imparterand.
"Elwin? Sophie woke up and she's in pain, what do I do?" Edaline frantically said into the Imparter.
"Hold on, I'll be there in a second." Elwin said with steely determination. "Try to keep her calm until I get there."
Two days later
Keefe sat on his bed thinking about Sophie. He hadn't visited her since the day of the disaster, and he regretted every second he stayed away.
Whenever he thought about her, he remembered the fear she felt, and the overwhelming pain, as they clamped the ability restrictor on her head. It wasn't a pretty feeling. In fact, it was so intense, that Keefe even refrained from visiting her the day she woke up the day after the horrible invention was placed on her head.
As he continued to battle his guilt, his imparter buzzed. Keefe lunged across his room and snatched it in his hands. He immediately opened it when he saw it was Edeline.
"Edeline?" Keefe said. "Is Sophie okay?"
"Yes. No. I don't know anymore." Edeline's projection rubbed her eyes tiredly.
"What's wrong?" Keefe asked.
"Sophie isn't talking to anyone, and the rare times she does, she just asks for more Slumberberry tea." Edeline said.
"Isn't that a mild sedative?" Keefe asked. "Sophie would never take a sedative after what happened to her and Dex."
"Exactly." Edeline said. "But who can blame her?"
Keefe's guilt churned in his stomach.
"Listen Keefe," Edeline said suddenly. "I know it's hard to see Sophie like this, and it hurts you the most to see her. Not just because you're an Empath."
She gave him a pointed look, and Keefe looked down.
"But she could really use someone who understands her right now." Edeline finished.
"I'll be there in a few minutes." Keefe said without hesitation.
As Edeline opened the door to Sophie's room, Keefe narrowed his eyes to see. All the curtains were closed and the only source of light was Iggy's neon purple fur. Keefe looked around the room, until his eyes locked on a lump in Sophie's bed. His heart started pounding harder than usual.
"Sophie?" Edeline said gently and approached the bed.
Keefe saw the covers shift.
"I know you're awake," Edeline grabbed the blanket and lowered it off of Sophie's head. "And you have company."
"Go away." Sophie mumbled almost unintelligiblely.
"Sophie, I know it's been hard for you. But you can't let the Council win. They want you to feel broken, but you're just stronger than ever." Edeline reached her hand out and brushed Sophie's hair off her forehead, leaving the ability restricting circlet in plain sight.
Sophie didn't respond.
"Keefe's here to visit you." Edeline said.
Keefe felt surprise and embarrassment radiating off of Sophie in hot waves.
"Tell him to stay away from me." Sophie said sadly, and Keefe heard her sniffle.
Keef stood there awkwardly not sure what to do. He wasn't used to Sophie not being the strong one. She was the one who held everyone together. And this way has been selfish of him, but he needed her.
Keefe just figured out his dad was part of the Neverseen. He'd always known Lord Cassious was evil, he just didn't know how much until recently. He wanted to tell Foster, but she was dealing with enough already. He couldn't even imagine being stripped of his ability…And she got stripped of multiple. Maybe it was time someone was there for her for a change.
"Edeline, could you give us a minute?" Keefe said.
Edeline nodded and walked out of the room.
Keef walked over to Sophie's bed and sat on the edge. He looked at her, but only saw the back of her head.
"Sophie?" Keefe said.
Sophie didn't move an inch.
"I know you're upset, heck, I'd be screaming and punching if this happened to me," Keefe started.
Sophie shifted to look at him, and his heart leaped. Her eyes were red from crying, but she still looked as beautiful as ever.
He realized that she was waiting for him to say something, so he continued,
"You're the bravest person I know Foster, and nothing, not even a silly piece of metal, can change that."
Sophie sat up in her bed and stared at her hands.
"Keefe?" Sophie said.
"Yes, Foster?" Keefe said.
"It's not just about the council, or that I'm basically talentless now. It's that people watched this happen. They saw it happen, and they did nothing." Sophie said. "All of the Elvin race was there, and not one of them tried to help, or even object. I mean, I knew people didn't like me, I just didn't know how much until now."
She started to cry again and Keefe didn't know what to say. So he didn't say anything.
He just hugged her.
Sophie melted into his arms, like he was the only thing holding her up in the whole world. She laid her head into the crook of his neck, and cried into him.
After Sophie calmed down, Keefe moved them, so they were both laying down on the bed, him still holding her, and her still holding onto him.
They stayed like that for a while, before Keefe scraped up the courage to say the words that had been burning his mind for the past two years.
"Sophie, I love you."
He held his breath to see how she would respond.
But as he looked at her in his arms…
She was already asleep.
Yeah, yeah I know cliffhangers are evil. (I COMPLETELY agree with you btw) But this wasn't really a cliff hanger. It was more of a sad ending…I know, It's not much better…
*Sigh*
