CHAPTER 3 IS PUBLISHED !
Jumping into the air to avoid Susanoo's club, Esdeath eventually placed her hand on the teigu's head before whispering.
" ICE BLENDER ! "
And, in an instant, Susanoo's entire body was trapped in a block of ice that prevented him from making the slightest movement.
Then directing her elbow back, Esdeath managed to hit Leone's face as she was going to attack her from behind. Letting out a groan of pain, Leone then received a kick in the jaws that sent her flying backwards. Not even needing to look at her to hear her crash against a wall, Esdeath preferred to focus her attention on Najenda, who was kneeling in front of her.
" Esdeath … "
"Najenda, you always have powerful people around you! I must admit that I had a great time."
Then, thrusting the tip of her sword into her body, she made her spit blood, while she took a malicious pleasure in seeing her writhe in pain.
"What a wonderful face! Too bad I can't continue if I want to bring you back to the palace alive! However, your acolytes will not be spared! Just like the salamander, I will kill all three of them!
Suddenly remembering that there was someone else to fight besides Leone and Susanoo, Esdeath reflexively jumped back to dodge an invisible kick.
Doing a somersault in the air, she managed to land standing on a bench while confessing.
"I let my guard down! I focused so much on Natsu and Najenda that I forgot about you… Tatsumi."
Appearing before her, dressed as Incursio, the boy pointed his sword at her, while affirming.
"Esdeath, no matter your feelings towards me, I will have no mercy in killing you if you dare to harm my friends."
"Im… Idiot." Najenda growled. "You had to stay invisible so you could kill Borick."
"That's impossible." Tatsumi retorted, barely holding back his anger. "Natsu… She killed Natsu! There's no way I'm forgiving her."
"Am I to understand that you have chosen your side, Tatsumi?" Esdeath questioned. "Are you declining the generous offer I made you?"
"I always chose my side." The boy retorted, running towards her. "I belong to Night Raid."
" TAIL CROSS ! "
Forming a spear with his threads, Lubbock attempted to skewer Wave. However, crouching down, the Jaeger was able to easily avoid his strike and then sent a kick to his leg. Hearing a horrible crack, his opponent immediately stepped back, before letting out a cry of pain as he was unable to put his foot on the ground.
"He broke my leg!"
Getting ready to finish her off, Wave had to protect her face with her arm to ward off Murasame. Seeing her sword being blocked, Akame couldn't help but growl in frustration, while Wave began to perform a series of punches, forcing her to back away.
Attacking him in turn, Mine began to aim at him from behind. However, Wave, as if he could see him, began to move in a zigzag pattern in order to make him harder to aim at. Hesitating then, Mine noticed that he purposely stayed in front of Akame, in order to make her understand that it was her friend who was going to be hit, if Mine missed his shot.
" Bastad! He's careful not to be targeted. "
"Night Raid! For all the murders you have committed so far... To avenge my comrades and prevent you from killing those who remain, I will stop you right now."
Managing to hit Akame in the stomach, Wave threw her against a tree before running towards her to finish her off.
"This is the end."
" Wave-kun, attend. "
Immediately freezing, eyes wide, Wave slowly turned around to see a tall figure walking towards him.
"Wave, don't act so horrible." The newcomer advised him, revealing his identity to everyone. "That's not like you."
"You?" Lubbock and Mine wondered.
Motionless, Wave stared at the newcomer before stuttering.
" B … B … Bols ? "
Then dropping Gajeel's unconscious body at his feet, the jaeger stated.
"I took care of knocking this one out! He won't cause us any more trouble."
"But... Bols... How... How can you be alive?"
"Night Raid injured me and took my teigu, before leaving me for dead! However, I was able to survive my injuries and had to come here on my own."
Then staring at the trio that Wave was fighting, Bols stated.
"Esdeath asked us to spare them, if we could, so she could interrogate them! So it's best if you calm down and keep your cool! Keep fighting with that bloodlust and you'll lose yourself."
Stepping towards Wave, he stated.
"Let me help you beat them, my friend."
Now standing only a meter away from Wave, Bols was about to place a hand on his shoulder, in a comforting manner.
Yet, while he seemed terrified since his appearance, Wave ended up gritting his teeth, before showing only hatred in his gaze.
"Bastard!"
Instantly lunging back, Bols felt Wave's sword trace a line across the skin of his torso, as Wave had attempted to mortally wound him.
"You're not Bols! How dare you use his appearance to try to defeat me?"
Remaining silent, his comrade eventually disappeared in a smokescreen before giving way to Chelsea.
"Tsss! As expected of a member of the Jaegers, fooling you is going to prove harder than expected."
"Kurome has met you before." Wave stated. "So I was suspicious from the start! But what you did… I could never forgive you."
Yet, before launching any assault, he suddenly tied himself up with threads, which pinned his arms against his torso.
" What … ? "
"Gotcha." Lubbock sneered, as his threads wrapped around Wave and a tree in order to immobilize him.
"You?" the Jaeger roared, trying to free himself, but failing.
"At least this diversion had the merit of giving me time to tie you up." Lubbock sneered. "Sorry for you but I used my strongest thread to tie you up."
Seeing Wave completely immobilized, the others finally nodded before fleeing. Taking the form of Susanoo, Chelsea took over Gajeel's body, before grabbing Lubbock, seeing her comrade flee on one leg.
"Hey, come back." Wave ordered, trying in vain to free himself. "Come back and fight."
Staring at Natsu as almost his entire body was hidden by darkness, the massive dragon in front of Natsu began to growl.
"Hey, can I know what you're up to? Since when do you decide to give up?"
"What do you mean 'give up'?" Natsu wanted to know. "And where am I?"
"No matter where you are, Natsu! From now on you must return to where you came from."
" Huh ? To fairy Tail ? "
"No, you fool! Go back and defeat that frost demon and save your friends."
Realizing that he was talking about Esdeath, Natsu suddenly placed his hand on the location of his heart, which seemed to have become hard as stone.
"What did she do to me? Is it because of her that I'm here?"
"Natsu, stop with your stupid questions! What can this woman do, against you? You can easily defeat her! Have you forgotten who you are?"
Then taking a deep breath, he roared.
"You are the son of a dragon! This woman will not be strong enough to defeat you! So leave this place... free yourself from her power... win this fight! Unless, in the end, I have raised only a wimp who only thinks of fleeing with her tail between her legs."
Opening his eyes, Natsu finally put on a serious look, before retorting.
"That's what we're going to see."
Then releasing a huge source of heat, he let a pillar of fire appear above him, which could have melted anything.
"Okay." Esdeath said. "It seems that's over."
In response, Tatsumi let blood escape from his mouth. Holding him by his throat, Esdeath seemed to admire his completely injured body, while only a few meager pieces of his armor remained, while the rest was broken, in pieces, at her feet.
"Tatsumi, it doesn't seem like it, but I'm not happy to see you in this state! Please think carefully! I'll give you one last chance to reconsider my offer! Join the Jaegers and I'll spare you."
Opening one eye to stare at her, Tatsumi aimed at her face, before sending a bloody spit at her forehead.
"You can die."
Sighing then, without bothering to wipe her cheek, Esdeath murmured.
"That's too bad! You don't leave me any choice."
Immediately grabbing her sword, she pointed the tip of her weapon towards Tatsumi's heart, while affirming.
"But I'll be merciful! I'll kill you in one hit."
Observing the fight, while continuing to protect Bolic, Kurome didn't move an inch since the beginning of the confrontation. However, while everything seemed to be profitable for Esdeath, the young girl ended up feeling a presence, which immediately made her scream.
"General, behind you."
Having already felt it, Esdeath had her face turned back, and more specifically on Natsu's body.
Steam. Steam was coming out of her body. And just by that, Esdeath couldn't help but ask.
"But he's invincible, or what?"
" Nat… Natsu ! " Tatsumi muttered.
Then transforming into golden flames, Natsu's smoke intensified. Then, steam was released from his mouth, showing that Esdeath's ice that had frozen his body had melted.
Finally, moving his hands, Natsu pinned them against the ground, so he could stand up. Slowly getting back on his feet, he remained looking down, while he took a deep breath. Finally, raising his head upwards, he roared.
"I'M BACK!"
Feeling the entire cathedral start to shake with that scream, Borick nearly wet his pants as he ground his teeth.
"It's… It's a real demon."
Raising his head, while his body was still leaning against a wall, Leone began to smile before declaring.
"Let's go, pulverize her... slaughter her... win against her... so we can all go back to base together."
"OF COURSE!" Natsu shouted.
Remaining exemplary in her composure, Esdeath stared at Natsu for a few seconds, before finally throwing Tatsumi's body to the side, and asking.
"What made you get up again?"
"Fairy Tail is not my only family anymore." Natsu stated. "I fought with Night Raid! I had fun with them... I fought with them... I partied with them... every member of Night Raid has become my friend! As long as they are in danger, I refuse to abandon them and go home! Prepare yourself because, this time, I will defeat you."
"Okay!" Esdeath said, lowering her cap in front of her gaze, to hide all the amusement her eyes showed. "In that case, it seems it's time I got serious! This time, I will fight you with all my power."
"That's it! Come to me so I can give you the most humiliating defeat of your life."
" MANIFESTION DE MAGATAMA ! "
Immediately, aided by Najenda's power, Susanoo was able to change form and became strong enough to break Esdeath's ice.
"Huh?" the general asked, turning to him. "What are you doing, Najenda?"
"Susanoo, attack Borick."
"Understood!" Assured her teigu.
Seeing him then propel himself towards his target, Esdeath ran into his path before retorting.
"As if I'd let you do that!
" FIRE DRAGON'S WINGS ! "
Suddenly struck by two wings of fire, Esdeath was thrown against a bench, which shattered into pieces, under the impact. Then landing in front of her, Natsu questioned her.
"Hey, Ice Queen, did you feel the power of my attack?"
Straightening her torso, Esdeath ran her hand over her chin to see that she was bleeding. It was the very first time she had seen the color of her blood since she had been in possession of her teigu and it made her rather unhappy.
"You..." She said, staring at Natsu, much more seriously than usual.
"I am your opponent." The dragon slayer roared, making his fists ignite. "Never forget it, because the one who defeats you will be me."
"Grrr! Don't think you're superior just because you resisted '' ICE DEATH ''! I admit I don't understand how you achieved this miracle but know that I have other techniques to kill you."
"Whatever." Natsu said. "Because in the end, we will be the victors, if we manage to kill Borick."
" What ? "
" NO AME MURAKUMO ! "
Summoning a sword in his hand, Susanoo made it grow larger before sending it towards Borick and Kurome.
"NATALA!" the girl shouted.
Extending her arm towards the teigu, Natala struck Susanoo's sword. However, the difference in strength was so great that her weapon was destroyed in an instant, while Susanoo's weapon then cut the puppet's body in two. Jumping into the air to avoid the sword, while holding Borick in her arms, Kurome then let go of the latter, before running towards the corpse of her former friend.
" NATALA !"
"Damn it! I missed it!" Susanoo said.
Then feeling a rush of icy air, the teigu turned to Esdeath to see her begin to freeze the room all around her.
"To think that because of this perverted idiot I'm supposed to protect, I can't even have fun fighting! No way."
Picking up her cap to throw it away, she affirmed.
"Kurome! I allow you to stop that stupid priest's protection! Our priority is to defeat Night Raid."
"What?" Borick panicked. "But you have to protect me! What will the Prime Minister say about your behavior?"
"No matter what that moron says, there is nothing more important to me than fighting! What happens tonight will undoubtedly be the fight I have always been waiting for! So your life means very little to me! And besides, what do you think that big minister will be able to do in front of me except get angry until I call him to order by freezing everything around me in an instant?"
Swallowing then, Borick saw her glance at Natsu, while affirming.
"This time, it's going to start for real, and for one of us, it's going to be the end, Natsu D…"
Crossing her arms in front of her face, she covered them with her ice, as Natsu's fist had attempted to hit her face.
Thrown backwards by the impact, Esdeath flew about ten meters before being able to put her feet back on the ground.
"We don't have the same determination." Natsu retorted. "You will never be able to defeat me."
"Bastard!" Esdeath roared, creating dozens of ice spears around her. " GRAUHORN! "
Seeing the projectiles flying towards him, Natsu let out a scream before increasing the temperature of his flames that surrounded his body. Touched by the heat wave, Esdeath's attacks disintegrated in an instant, while Natsu decided to counterattack.
" FIRE DRAGON'S ROAR ! "
" ICE WALL ! "
Forming a wall of ice in front of her, Esdeath was able to be safe behind her protection, until she saw it melt from Natsu's flames.
" That … ? "
Jumping to the side, she managed to get out of the way in time, as the fire tornado pulverized her defense. Not having finished, Natsu was already in front of her, charging at her to finish her off.
" FIRE DRAGON'S HORN ! "
Letting his head hit her stomach, Natsu slammed into her hard enough that a jet of blood came out of Esdeath's mouth.
Then seeing the body of her worst nightmare being thrown to the other end of the room, Najenda could only widen her eyes, while Natsu seemed to have taken the advantage.
"I don't believe it! Can Natsu... really beat that monster?"
" ICE TREE ! "
Coming out of the ground, dozens of ice spikes formed a deadly path towards the mage. Immediately slamming his hands against the ground, Natsu created a pillar of fire that he used to eject himself into the air.
Slipping over Esdeath's attack, the mage found himself out of danger. However, jumping from the top of one of the giant peaks, Esdeath propelled herself towards him, while his arm was covered in a huge block of ice that took the appearance of a giant's arm.
" ARM ICE TITAN ! "
" FIRE DRAGON'S FIST ! "
Hitting the ice arm, Natsu's fist was of equal force, creating a shockwave that was felt throughout the room.
Lying on his back, struggling to stay conscious, Tatsumi smiled as he whispered.
"Go ahead, Natsu! I know you can defeat her."
"General!" Kurome muttered, also watching the fight, while Borick decided to flee, behind her.
At first evenly matched, Esdeath finally gained the upper hand. Pulling Natsu's arm back, she was then able to strike his body and eject him at full speed against the ceiling. Seeing him disappear in a cloud of dust and debris, Esdeath immediately began to smile.
However, her smile disappeared as soon as she saw a ball of fire coming straight towards her.
" FIRE DRAGON'S ROQUET ! "
Like a meteorite, Natsu hit her at full power and fell with her until they crashed to the ground. Then jumping back, Natsu took a step back, while Esdeath had more difficulty getting up.
"You can't defeat me." Natsu stated.
Trembling with fury, Esdeath showed everyone that she was about to burst into rage. Yet, to everyone's surprise, she nearly burst out laughing.
"Hahaha! That feels good! So this is pain? So this is excitement? So this is fear? It's... It's... It's... GREAT."
Freezing the air around her again, Esdeath stared at Natsu with a look of pure joy, as she screamed.
"COME! COME! COME! Count on me, this time, this time I will attack you with all my power."
Creating a gigantic spear above her, she stated.
"Let's see if you can stop this! SPEAR ICE GOD !"
Immediately, the giant spear shot straight towards Natsu, while the man remained motionless.
"Natsu, dodge." Susanoo shouted, preparing to run to help him.
However, he stopped, as soon as Najenda raised her arm in front of him.
"It's no use, Susanoo."
" But … Boss ? "
"That reminds me of Chelsea's words about Natsu." Najenda said, as she watched Esdeath's spear rush towards him. "For her, Esdeath was an insurmountable obstacle for Natsu! She was wrong! It's actually the opposite."
"Dragon slayer technique…" The mage shouted, getting into position.
"Actually, it's Natsu, the insurmountable obstacle that will stop Esdeath."
" CRIMSON LOTUS : EXPLODING FLAME BLADE ! "
First spinning around, Natsu created a whirlwind of flame that then projected towards Esdeath's attack. Being then pulverized, the spear was destroyed in an instant, while Natsu's attack continued on its way. Not even having time to understand what was happening, Esdeath was also hit, before the whirlwind of flame hit the back wall, destroying it, before finding herself outside.
"What's that?" Wave, who had just freed himself, wanted to know.
Feeling like an earthquake at his feet, the boy turned his gaze towards the cathedral to see Natsu's attack coming out of it, before heading straight towards the sky.
" Fire … ?"
" Wave ! "
Dropping down next to him, Run asked.
"What was that?"
"I don't know! But it came from the cathedral."
"I have a bad feeling about this! We need to get to the general."
Coughing as a cloud of smoke formed in the great hall, Leone finally managed to stand up.
Looking ahead, she saw Tatsumi attempt to do the same, only to end up collapsing to the ground, too injured to make any move.
"Stay still." Leone said, taking one of his arms and putting it around her shoulders. "Let me help you."
"Natsu!" the boy whispered. "Natsu won, didn't he?"
As if to give him an answer, the cloud of smoke cleared at that moment. The room currently had a huge trail on its floor starting from Natsu's position, all the way to the wall that his last attack had pulverized. And in between, Esdeath's body was there. With part of her clothes and skin charred, she looked pretty bad. Yet she was still standing, continuing to stare at Natsu.
" Ho… How can she still be standing?"
Staggering then, Esdeath was forced to plant her sword into the ground to use it as a cane.
Seeing this, Najenda immediately ordered.
"Natsu! Susanoo! It's time! Finish her!"
Then attacking from two different directions, Susanoo and Natsu charged towards Najenda, fists forward.
"This is the end."
" Go for it ! "
Yet, then raising her gaze, Esdeath muttered.
" MAHAPADMA ! "
Immediately, Natsu felt a strange sensation, as if everything had suddenly frozen. In any case, without understanding how, Esdeath disappeared from his field of vision, to find herself behind him.
"It's over!" she assured him, sheathing her sword.
Immediately, two huge wounds in the shape of a cross appeared on Natsu's chest. Screaming in pain, the wizard fell forward, before crashing against the ground, beginning to be surrounded by a pool of his own blood.
" Natsu ! " Leone et Tatsumi were horrified .
Chuckling then, Esdeath then stared at an object she held in her hand, which was none other than Susanoo's life core. Squeezing it then, she pulverized it so as to make the teigu's body disappear.
" Susanoo ! " Shouted Najenda.
"Congratulations!" Esdeath said. "I must admit that I felt quite the fright today! I won't soon forget this wonderful fight! But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, don't they? It's time to finish with you."
A powerful shot was then fired in her direction. Creating a wall of ice in time, Esdeath blocked the attack, while the rest of Night Raid burst into the room.
"I missed her." Mine grumbled.
"You had to guess as much." Chelsea said, returning to her original form.
"Guys?" Tatsumi wondered.
"The mission has been accomplished." Akame stated, blood dripping from her sword. "The target, Borrick, has been eliminated."
Hearing this, Esdeath was somewhat displeased, as she thought she had managed the situation well enough to indirectly save that fool.
"Okay! Our game is over! I'm going to kill all of you, Night Raid members."
Yet, appearing behind her, Susanoo retorted.
"I would never let you do that."
" Me ? " Said Esdeath.
Having just entrusted him with all the rest of her life force, Najenda let herself be crushed against the ground, all the while affirming.
"Do your best, Suu."
Then inhaling a large amount, she shouted the order.
"Everyone listen to me! Now that the target is dead, we have nothing more to do here! Take the wounded and let's leave! Now!"
"Boss?" Akame wondered.
Turning around in time to parry Kurome's sword, she heard her sister state.
"You're not going anywhere."
Yet, suddenly receiving a kick from Leone in the stomach, she was thrown backwards, while the woman affirmed.
"We don't have time to play with you! Let's go!"
Nodding, Akame eventually made her way to Natsu's body before picking him up. She didn't know if he was still alive or not. However, if they could still save him, there was no way they were leaving him behind.
Seeing Leone do the same with Tatsumi's body, while Chelsea reverted to her Tatsumi form to carry Gajeel, Najenda began to smile, before training her eyes.
"Yes, that's it! Go!"
Yet, feeling a pair of arms lift her up, the young woman was surprised to see Lubbock take her in his arms.
"But... what are you doing?"
"I'm following orders," he assured, running to join the others. "Now that a withdrawal has been announced, there's no way we're leaving any of our own behind! Especially not you, Boss."
Suddenly grabbed by the back of his coat, he was lifted up by Susanoo.
" Suu ? "
"Tell Natsu and Tatsumi, I'll never forget them." His friend asked him.
Then, without saying more, he threw the duo through the huge hole that Natsu had created in the ceiling. Doing the same with the rest of the group, Susanoo evacuated them. Before the latter towards Esdeath. Exhaling more noisily than usual, the latter showed that her fight against Natsu had exhausted her. As a result, Susanoo had every chance of holding her back long enough to allow the others to flee.
Yet, he barely took a step forward when sharp feathers pierced his body. Growling in frustration, he watched as Run and Wave entered the room, to see the extent of the damage.
