Hey guys. Sorry for the long absence. I was away in Greece for two weeks before returning to work all summer. And I wanted to get learn my new job before I could write again. Coming back with a new chapter of my story.
Hope and Klaus are trapped in the Gilbert House as the Quest for the Cure continues without them.
Good reading.
Chapter 13: Totally Powerless
At that moment, Hope didn't know what to do. Since last night, she was confined with her father in the Gilbert's living room. The worst was that Kol's charred body was right next to them. Already she felt bad for having participated in entrapment her uncle at Elena and Jeremy, being close to his corpse was a terrible suffering. She contained herself, but with great difficulty. The sun had risen for a while.
Her father stood in the living room. Upset without uttering a word, he stared at the inert body of his brother. Hope felt bad for him too. He had no idea she came from a future where his brother Kol was alive. She was sorry to have to hide everything from him. She wanted more than anything to reveal that she was his daughter from the future and that Kol was still alive in her time. But she couldn't. Not until Hope was born. So she had to do the hardest thing for her. Do nothing. She could no longer act on the events of the Quest for the Cure, and to her great dismay, she could not comfort her father. And it was torture for her.
She felt a deep sense of guilt. She played a part in Kol's death. She did everything to convince herself that it was for the sake of her future, however, it remained difficult to accept. Then she knew that Kol was alive in her future and that preventing his death would have been useless and dangerous for her.
Her father gazed in silence at the remains of Kol without even looking at her. She hated it. Bonnie had locked them in the Gilbert living room with a containment spell. Hope had to play the role of prisoner in order to avoid having to interfere with current events, at the risk of provoking other time incidents. She hated being a time traveler.
In silence, she stared at her father, not knowing what to say or do. Nevertheless, she remained close to him, wanting to be there for him, despite everything.
"You okay, Hope?"
It was the first time her father had opened his mouth since they were locked in the Gilbert's living room. He hadn't said a word all night. Hearing him speak disconcertingly.
"Are you okay? But it would be a stupid question." she replied.
In grief, she landed right next to him staring at Kol's charred body.
"I know nothing I'm going to say is gonna change anything, but I'm really sorry for you. And I want to be there for you in this hard time. After my parents died, my whole world collapsed. Then I have a good idea of what you must feel. And you should not be alone in these moments. That's why I want to be there for you."
Moved, Klaus came to lay his hand on Hope's shoulder, still staring at the corpse of his brother.
"Thank you. I know Kol tried to strangle you. You don't have to grieve or pretend to be sad for me..."
Kol is my uncle. Of course I'm sad for him, that I don't pretend, and that it hurts me to have participated in his death. Even if he is alive in my future.
Hope was also moved by her father's gesture, and this made her guilt even more terrible.
"Kol was your brother. It's okay to mourn him. Despite his flaws, he was your brother. I understand why you want to mourn him."
Klaus nodded, still looking at Kol's corpse. He continued with a sad voice.
"I admit Kol and I haven't been close in the last ten centuries. We've had our share of quarrels. But even so, he was still my brother. I loved him in my own way even though he was acting like an idiot. This is not the first time I have lost a family member. I lost one before I was born. And just before we became vampires, I lost my brother Henrik who was killed by the werewolves of our village. That death that pushed my mother to make us vampires. And recently, before you came in, there was Finn. But he... he was a bigger fool than Kol. He joined with our mother to destroy us all. So I don't care about his death... but Kol..."
"I'm really sorry..." said Hope saddened.
She was interrupted by the arrival of someone whom neither her nor her father expected to see. Tyler had just entered the Gilbert house. He seemed perfectly happy to see Klaus' dismay.
"Morning, sunshine!" he scowled triumphantly, staring at Klaus who was not looking.
Seeing the lack of reaction from his enemy, Tyler rejoiced again.
"You look pathetic!"
Annoyed, Hope looked away. Tyler Lockwood was the last person she wanted to see at a time like this.
But her father was deaf to Tyler's provocations. Still gazing at the corpse of Kol, he simply replied.
"Only until Bonnie's spell locking me in here wears off. Then I'll look different."
And finally, he turned to Tyler, staring at him coldly.
"Angrier, perhaps. Or I won't look like anything because I'll have gouged your eyeballs from their sockets."
Not intimidated by him, Tyler continued to gloat with triumph like the winner of a boxing match.
"My friends will be back with the Cure by then. So, I could shove it down your throat and make you mortal!"
"I'm an Original." Klaus pointed out to her in a cold tone. "What makes you think my entire vampire bloodline won't be cured along with me? I.E., you."
Tyler, amused, pretended to think and always replied with gloating:
"You know what I think? I think that's impossible. I think the moment you stop being a vampire, our whole blood connection to you is broken, and your sire-line ceases to exist. So, whatever happens to you, happens only to you, which means I can kill your ass and no one else has to die. Although I am still debating just how to do it."
Hope was even more troubled by Tyler's desire to eliminate her father. But she did not blame him. Tyler Lockwood had been turned into a Hybrid to be a slave of her father. When he got out, he had tried to kill her father, which resulted in the death of all the Hybrids and Carol Lockwood. Tyler had lost everything because of Klaus. Hope understood that he wanted revenge on him. She remembered that she also wanted revenge on Roman for the death of her mother. She had taken revenge by having Greta's vampires killed, which had triggered her werewolf side.
My Dad took everything from him. His mother and his life. I can't blame Tyler for wanting revenge. I would do the same thing he did if I were him. I know what it's like to want revenge. I can't blame him.
Klaus rushed towards Tyler with his vampire speed, but was blocked by the containment spell, preventing him from reaching the young man. He was right in front of him, unable to touch him.
The Original Hybrid shouted out in rage before Tyler.
"I recommend drowning. There's nothing quite like the feeling of someone fighting for something as basic as human breath. And let me tell you, your mother was a fighter."
Klaus was satisfied not to be touched by Tyler's provocations, for the latter cast a grim look at her when he mentioned his mother.
"If you want to have fun so much, do it outside." Hope suggested.
"I'm not going anywhere." Tyler replied severely.
"Maybe you should listen to Hope," Klaus continued with a sneer look. "Your friends have not yet found the Cure. And if something ever happened to them and the Cure is inaccessible to you... (he pretended to be worried.) I would not damage your precious misplaced ego."
But Tyler gave him a cold look.
"I'll shove the Cure down your throat as soon as they get back!"
But Klaus was only amused by the hostile attitude of the young Hybrid. He answered with a grinning.
"Well, I hope for you that you're right, little orphan!"
"SHUT UP!" Tyler yelled angrily.
Hope was shocked. She knew her father hated Tyler and wanted to hurt him. But she couldn't help but be moved by the young Lockwood's situation. Because she too was an orphan in her future.
I'm an orphan, too, like Tyler. Like Elena and Jeremy. Because in my future, I lost you tow Mom and you.
She tried to contain herself. Being locked in the Gilbert House, she could not afford to have a fit and change into a wolf while she was in a confinement spell with her father.
Yet something intrigued Hope. Tyler was talking about using the Cure against her father. And she knew that Stefan wanted to use the Cure on Elena. It made no sense. It was impossible to share the Cure, since there was only one dose. But perhaps they were still unaware of it at that time.
They all believe that they can share the Cure with everyone. They don't know yet that there is only one dose. And when everyone hears about it, things will turn out differently.
The day passed slowly. Hope could do nothing but wait with her father. And to top it off, Tyler had decided to stay behind to keep them company in order to gloat even more about the misery of his enemy.
The night had just fallen when Caroline coming to the house. Hope hoped she could talk some sense into her boyfriend. She noticed that she was carrying a large shopping bag, which she put on the ground a few feet away from Klaus and his daughter.
"I brought food for Hope."
Immediately, the woman opened the bag and saw sandwiches and bottles of water.
"Thanks." she says to her while taking a sandwich.
"Really?" exclaimed Tyler in indignation.
"Hope didn't kill your mom, Tyler." Caroline replied firmly. "I can't let her starve to death in this house. And by the way, what are you still doing here? What have you been doing here for hours?"
"Gloating them." Tyler replied simply with a drink.
"Hello, Caroline." says Klaus politely. "Thank you for bringing food for Hope. Although I would have preferred a bag of blood."
"I'm running short of blood bags right now." Caroline replied sarcastically.
Then Klaus turned to Tyler.
"It's just us. Leave Hope out of it!"
"She chose to follow you." Tyler screams while taking his drink. "That she should bear the consequences."
"You could call your friends to find out where they are with the Cure." Hope sarcastically suggested. "I wouldn't want you to be bored with playing prison guards with us."
"Yeah, good idea!" exclaimed Tyler rejoicing as he stared at Klaus. "So I know when I could kill him!"
"You think you scare me with your ridiculous threats?" Klaus says to him with a look of hatred. "I have lived for a thousand years. I stopped counting the number of people who tried to kill me. So if you're trying to scare me, little orphan, you'll have to do more than that!"
Caroline stared at Klaus for a moment before turning to her boyfriend.
"Come home. Don't stoop to his level."
"He destroyed my life!" roared Tyler between his teeth. "I plan on being present for every second of his misery until I can kill him myself."
Klaus sighed annoyingly, not being affected by the threats of young Lockwood.
Seeing that it was useless to reason with him, Caroline sighed.
"Fine. You can gloat and multitask. This place is a disaster. Starting with a horrific burnt corpse."
Hope was again shocked and stared at her angrily.
This horrific burnt corpse is my uncle's! Have a little respect!
Caroline found a tablecloth in a closet and she and Tyler used it to cover up Kol's body. Klaus and Hope beheld them with a slightly tortured expression.
At least I wouldn't have to put up with my uncle's corpse while I'm locking in here. So, it's not bad. Thank you, Caroline.
Then her father stared at Caroline with an almost begging look.
"Tyler's mother is dead. So is my brother. We're even. Call Bonnie. Get her to let me out of here."
But Hope knew she wouldn't. And she was afraid it was a trick of her dad to go kill the Gilberts. And that would be a danger to her future.
But Caroline replied to him dryly with coldness.
"I will never, ever, help you."
But Klaus continued with the same pleading look.
"How quickly you forget the part where I saved Tyler from the misery of being a werewolf. Or the night your mother invited me into her home to save the life of her precious daughter."
The young woman remained hostile and firm in front of him.
"How delusional are you? You killed his mother. And let's not forget that we're standing in a house where Elena's aunt Jenna used to live. Or did you think that your charm would make us forget how you killed her, too? You know what? No. I am not going to engage in this. You are not even worth the calories I burn talking to you."
Suddenly, Klaus rushed to pick up a nearby floor lamp, which he used to impale Caroline. And he swung her to his side of the magic barrier and bit her neck in the horror of Tyler and Hope.
"NO!"
"What the hell?" cried the Tribrid in panic.
Klaus dropped Caroline to the ground, and stared at Tyler, his mouth bleeding. For the first time since his isolation, he seemed to be happy.
"Now, that was definitely worth the calories."
As Tyler came to help Caroline lie on the couch, Hope stared at her father with fright.
"What have you done? Why did you do that?" she exclaimed. "You're mad at Tyler. Not at Caroline. You don't have to kill her."
"Not her, Tyler is." Klaus replied with amusement. "I want to remind him that he has no advantage over me. Even being locked up. Too bad that Caroline has to suffer the consequences."
He's taking revenge on Tyler by going after Caroline. She's just collateral damage. Except I need Caroline alive for my future! She's Lizzie and Josie's mom! And without her, no Salvatore Boarding School in the future! And I can't intervene to save her! I am powerless!"
Trying to convince her father, Hope insisted, without wanting to seem too worried not to attract suspicion.
"You got what you wanted. You put Tyler in his place. Now, you don't need Caroline's death. She never did anything against you and you know it."
"Nope." admitted Klaus always with indifference to what happened to Caroline. "But if I save her, I'll do Tyler a favor. And I don't want to do that!"
Dad cares about Caroline! He's not going to let her die like that! Here, I did nothing! I didn't force the events, so it must have happened without me! So, what could have made Dad want to heal Caroline?
Hope was helpless. She would have already cured Caroline with her blood, if her father was not locked in the same room as her. She couldn't do that in front of him without having to tell him that she was his daughter from the future.
Caroline was moaning in pain, while Tyler laid her down on the couch.
"Oh my God! Oh my God!"
"Hey, hey! Look at me! Look at me! I can fix this!" Tyler reassured.
"How?" moans Caroline as if he had just said an absurdity. "The only thing that can heal me is his blood! Oh my God..."
"I know! I'll fix it!"
He stood up to face Klaus.
"She'll die if you don't heal her."
"Okay." Klaus replied with amusement.
He bit his wrist and held it out to Tyler, always amused.
"Beg me to save her life."
Despite his anger, Tyler kept calm and stared at Klaus coldly.
"Is this what you want? To remind me that I'm powerless against you? Fine. You win. I'm nothing. Now save her. Please."
But his argument only amused Klaus even more.
"I'm sorry, mate. I didn't quite catch that."
"Please!
"Please..." repeated the Original Hybrid always amused and pretending to be deaf.
"Please save her life."
Still indifferent to Caroline's misfortune, Klaus replied:
"See, now I think you're just telling me what I want to hear. I mean, you did call me pathetic earlier. And wouldn't it be more pathetic of me to help now, knowing that hours ago, you announced your plan to kill me in a manner in which you're debating because you want it to have a certain amount of flair? I'm just asking."
With determination, Tyler insisted again.
"I'll be your slave again. I'll do whatever you want. Just help her."
"No." replied Klaus in a categorical tone.
"He learned his lesson." Hope insisted. "You don't have to let her die."
"I'll do nothing." he replied always indifferent.
"Get me out of here. I can't even look at him." moans Caroline from the couch.
Tyler came to take her out of the living room. While Klaus stared at his daughter, noticing her distress.
"Do you care for Caroline?" he wondered.
Of course, Hope couldn't tell her the real reason she wanted Caroline alive. But she could not let her die without doing nothing.
"You seemed to care about her when you saved her, and not your own sister from the Council. Even at the Lockwoods at the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. I saw you two together. And you two seemed to get along."
"She was a mere distraction." said Klaus.
"I don't believe you. I'm sure there's something else." Hope said. "I'm sure you don't want to hurt Caroline."
Even after Marcel had locked him in New Orleans for five years, Dad never tried to kill him. Then there's no reason for him to let Caroline die. Something must have happened for him to save her.
"Not her." admitted Klaus. "But I can't let Tyler beat me."
"If Caroline dies, it will only make Tyler more determined to kill you again." Hope insisted. "He will have nothing to lose!"
"Let him try and I will kill him with my own hands." replied Klaus shrugging his shoulders.
After a while, Tyler returned to the living room carrying Caroline in his arms. And to Hope's surprise, he gently placed her on the floor of the living room a few feet from Klaus.
"You want to be in control, Klaus?" the young Lockwood replied with a defiant look at his enemy. "Here. Now you get to be in control of her life. If you want her to die, fine. But then you can sit here and watch her die yourself."
And at his words, he left the Gilbert house, leaving Caroline lying on the ground. Hope realized that Tyler knew Klaus was attached to Caroline. By leaving her dying near him, he challenged him to watch her die or save her.
Quietly, Klaus approached Caroline with a compassionate look.
"Nothing personal, love. If I cure you, that means victory for him. Don't worry. It won't be long now."
He's going to watch her die to save her at the last moment?
Hope hoped that her hypothesis was correct. Or her future will die with Caroline.
The blonde female vampire stared at Klaus while breathing heavily in a weakened state. Hope came to help her settle on the couch. She justified herself before her:
"You don't deserve to die like an animal on the floor. The sofa will be more comfortable."
Klaus had not moved from his position, but kept his eyes fixed on Caroline. Hope noticed that he seemed to hesitate. He didn't seem sure he wanted to watch the vampire die.
Caroline was breathing hoarse and had become pale. Her death was near.
"If you don't feed me your blood, I'll die." she said in a weak voice looking at Klaus.
He have to save her. He have to save her for my future! For Lizzie and Josie! Caroline must not die! If she dies, my future will die! And if I heal Caroline with my blood, I'll only put my future in even more danger! Like when I saved Damon!
Hope stared at her father, wanting to beg him with the look of saving Caroline.
"Then you'll die, and Tyler will have learned his lesson the hard way." he replied without looking at her or Hope.
"How could you do this to him? To his mom? To me?" said Caroline, breathing hard.
"I'm a thousand years old. Call it boredom."
He never hurt anyone out of boredom. He is seeking justifications. He is the father before my birth. Was he so stubborn before I arrived?
Hope continued to stare at her father, wanting to anticipate his future actions.
Caroline kept talking to him:
"I don't believe you."
"Fine. Then maybe it's because I'm pure evil, and I can't help myself." replied Klaus always without looking at anyone.
"It's because you were hurt. Which means that there is a part of you that is human."
At her words, Klaus finally began to look at her, with emotion. Hope looked at Caroline, moved by her words.
Her father asked the dying vampire when he sat down in front of her:
"How could you possibly think that?"
"Because I've seen it. Because... I've caught myself wishing that I could forget all the horrible things that you've done." said Caroline.
"But you can't." Klaus continued. "Can you?"
"She saw a part of humanity in you." Hope added. "And someone who has feelings deserves to be saved."
"Exactly, she's right," Caroline said. "I know that you're in love with me. And anybody capable of love is capable of being saved.""
Klaus' eyes began to shine and he seemed to have been moved by Caroline's words. Hope swore to see tears in her eyes. He had not wept at the death of Kol, but that of Caroline seemed to really sadden him. He looked away.
"You're hallucinating." he said, avoiding Caroline's gaze.
"I find her rather lucid for someone dying." Hope says with sympathy by laying her hand on Caroline's. "She saw what I see in you. No matter how much you say you like to do harm, there is a part of you that is human and worth it. Caroline understood it and she pinned you. Are you really going to let her die? If you're in love with her, you have to save her, but don't do it for Tyler. For you. And just for you. Please."
Dad, please save Caroline! Please, Come on! Come on! Come on! Don't make me expose myself and put my future at danger for you! Please, come on! Come on! Come on!
Caroline's breathing became difficult then weakened and faded. For a while still, Klaus looked torn, but finally he lifted Caroline up into a sitting position, sat down behind her, bit at her wrist and took it to her mouth and she started drinking. Klaus straightened her hair as she regained strength and continued to drink.
Hope sighed with relief as she placed her hand on her heart, knowing that her future was saved for the time being.
That was close. I hate time travel! Nevertheless, it allowed me to see that Caroline was one of the people who made my father want to be good before he met Camille. Caroline understood my father and saw that he could be a good person. I don't exist yet and he is already starting to go the way of becoming the father I knew in the future.
Hope moved away from Klaus and Caroline a little bit and sat down at a table in the living room, waiting to get out of the Gilbert residence.
Another day at the Gilberts. Hope found the time long. They should have found the Cure by now. If Shane knew where to find it, it would be easy to get it. Unless Shane had a scheme in mind that wasn't about Elena and her friends. After all, Hope knew he was looking for Silas, not the Cure. And to wake up Silas, he needed Bonnie and Jeremy. Knowing that the Salvatore Brothers would not let him, Hope assumed that Shane must have an accomplice or even several to help him achieve his goal.
Seeing the girl thinking, Klaus frowned and joined her.
"What's troubling you, my littlest wolf?"
Hope was always moved when he called her that, but quickly stood up and said:
"We've been stuck here for three days. They should have found the Cure by now. If Shane knows where to find it, why haven't they found it yet? And the fact that it lasts so long intrigues me. Even Caroline hasn't heard from her friends, which makes me think something's going on there."
"And that is certainly not in favor of our enemies," Klaus remarked with a sneaky look. "Fortune never favors the Salvatores. Which is a consolation to me."
That's when Caroline arrived with the phone in hand. And judging by her serious expression, Hope assumed she was talking to Elena Gilbert.
Klaus was glad.
"Looks like your hunch was right. Something's going on over there. A problem with the Cure."
Caroline finished her phone conversation:
"...I'll find the Klaus' sword, and I'll call you back."
Klaus began to watch Caroline sneakily. He seemed to have forgotten the death of his brother.
"Need our help with anything, love?"
"Nope." replied Caroline dryly as she left the house.
After she left, Hope turned to her father.
"What's going on? Why does Caroline need the Hunter's sword from your house? You know I don't have the hearing of vampires..."
Always amused, Klaus replied:
"You were right, Hope. Something's going on there. Caroline was talking to Elena. According to her, Jeremy Gilbert seems to have been kidnapped by someone. And when they went looking for him, Shane disappeared taking Bonnie with him. Which means he has someone helping him. He's not on the Salvatores side. And speaking of them, Damon had an argument with Elena, then he's gone in turn. They think he was jumped and grabbed. Elena is with Stefan and Rebekah. They want Caroline to help them translate the map leading to the Cure using the Hunter's sword."
Hope reflected on everything her father had just taught her. She knew that Shane was not interested in the Cure and that the others would prevent her from waking up Silas. Which made it so he had found a way to keep Jeremy and Bonnie away from their friends. What about Damon? He had to oppose Shane, if he saw him as a real threat. Whoever grabbed him must have been a Hunter. Another Hunter of the Five?
It was a long time before Caroline returned to the Gilbert house with a laptop in her arms. Tyler had come in turn, and held the Hunter's sword wrapped in a blanket.
The sight of Tyler made Klaus, who was sitting on the coffee table, even more happy.
"Well, if it isn't little orphan Lockwood. Come to show how laughably impotent you are against me?"
Not letting himself be touched by his provocations, Tyler unfolded the sword before his eyes.
"I'm just trying to help my friends find the Cure. Found this in your attic."
Caroline sat down on the couch and opened her computer. Hope and Klaus watched the sword in Tyler's hands.
"And you think finding the sword brings you closer to the Cure?" asked the Original Hybrid with skepticism.
"You tell me." replied Tyler, staring at the sword. "I was playing around with the handle on the ride over, and I found this..."
He unrolled the leather that covered the top of the sword, revealing a kind of rotating mechanism with letters of a strange language inscribed on it. Hope hadn't noticed it until now. It was a kind of portable safe designed to hide secret messages. Intrigued, Klaus stood up from the table and headed towards Tyler.
"And what do you think this is?"
Joyful, Caroline answered the question by getting up from the couch:
"It's called a cryptex." (Seeing Tyler's confused look, she specified.) "I've seen 'The Da Vinci Code'. You turn the different sides to the different symbols to get the translation on the other side. And with the magic of the Internet, Elena sent over these." (She showed the printed pictures of the Hunter's Mark on Jeremy's body.) "So now all we have to do is cryptex away. If you happened to want to help, we wouldn't stop you."
But Hope noticed that her father was not impressed by the discoveries of Caroline and Tyler. He continued with amusement.
"Right. Well, might I suggest using the magic of the Internet to purchase an Aramaic-to-English dictionary from your nearest retailer."
"These texts are written in Aramaic?" asked Hope.
"I recognize this language very well," assured her father.
"What's Aramaic?" asked Tyler confused.
Caroline seemed to have lost her enthusiasm. She gave the answer:
"It's a dead language. It hasn't been used since, like, biblical times."
"Qetsiyah's native tongue, I'm guessing." Klaus looked sneaky. "You know, even if you had the best dictionary in the world, it could take days to translate. Perhaps weeks."
He sat down on the table, sighing helplessly, and then began to speak in a strange language.
"In bas so-teen-too ara-ma-eet."
All stared at him, intrigued.
"What does that mean?" asked Caroline.
"If only you spoke Aramaic." Klaus replied grinning.
Embarrassed, Hope added.
"I am a modern day teenager. I don't speak Aramaic."
Caroline and Tyler sighed in frustration and started translating the hidden texts on the Hunter's sword using the internet. Unfortunately, their attempts were poor. They used the symbols on the Hunter's Mark, but failed to formulate correct sentences.
"Passage inside... requires a young senator, and a pretty flower? Okay, none of this makes sense!" grumbled Caroline annoyed that she could not understand anything in Aramaic.
"We will spend days on this." added Hope frustrated to be still imprisoned.
But she noticed that her father was always amused, and began to respond to Caroline's irritation.
"...Requires a powerful witch and a hunter in full bloom."
"What are you doing?" Tyler wondered.
"I don't need to tell you my reasons." Klaus simply replied. "Caroline. Bring my sword over here."
Caroline approached the Hunter's sword close enough to Klaus so that he could read the cryptex.
He read it aloud.
" 'Silas rests on the far side, the means of his destruction at hand.' "
"It's about the Cure." Hope supposed.
Klaus took a close look at the pictures of Jeremy's tattoo on the computer, then ordered Caroline.
"Turn the cryptex to the right."
She did it.
"Stop. 'The top of the hilt reveals a key to a nautical map.' " read Klaus. "Turn it to the left." (Caroline follows her instructions.) "Now turn the other piece."
Suddenly, Hope noticed that her father seemed intrigued, as if he had just discovered something important.
"There's something else." he murmured, surprised.
Then he began to murmur in Aramaic, and then he began to gloat with triumph.
"Klaus, what does it mean?" insisted firmly Caroline.
"There is only one dose of the Cure." he replied with a joyful expression. "Even if your friends find it, they won't be able to share it. Sorry, Tyler, you can't get your plan going because there's only one dose."
Caroline and Tyler seemed stunned. Hope was calm, knowing all that already. And she knew this news would change the whole picture of the Quest for the Cure.
"The Cure was originally designed against Silas. It was not meant to cure all the vampires in the world." she explained.
Caroline and Tyler took some time to accept the news. So no one would take it. And Tyler will not be able to carry out his revenge against Klaus.
After an awkward silence, Hope came to speak.
"Caroline. Maybe you should contact Elena and Stefan to tell them about the Cure."
Caroline nodded, and tried to reach her friends. Unsuccessful. It was difficult to pick up a telephone network on the island where they were.
Nevertheless, Caroline managed to reach Rebekah. She put the speaker on so that everyone could hear.
"Hey, it's Caroline. We have the translation of the tattoo. We're emailing you pictures of the map and instructions right now."
"Got it. Thanks." replied Rebekah.
"Actually, it was me." said Klaus.
"Nik, you helped?" said Rebekah on the other end of the line.
"You sound so surprised, little sister." exclaimed Klaus grinning.
Hope seemed intrigued. Why would her father suddenly be nice to her aunt? Why did he try to help them when he was still imprisoned at the Gilbert's?
"Shouldn't I be?" exclaimed Rebekah, skeptical. "I mean, you don't want me to be human. You don't want any of us to be human. Why would you help us find the Cure?"
Klaus suddenly seemed serious when talking to his sister.
"Maybe I finally realized the longer I stand in the way of what you want, the longer you'll continue to hate me. Perhaps I want my sister to finally know happiness."
"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me a hundred times..." grumbled his sister still skeptical by this sudden change of mood of her brother.
"No more fooling. No more games. I hope you get to live, and die, as you wish."
"So do I." Rebekah said.
"There is one more thing, Rebekah." replied Klaus, before he started talking fast. "There is only one dose of the Cure. You need to find it first and take it. It's the only way you'll..."
Tyler quickly came to cut off Rebekah's call. But Hope knew she heard perfectly. And she understood why her father was becoming so kind to her. He hoped that Rebekah would find the Cure before the others.
Now that Dad knows there's only one dose of the Cure, he wants it give to Aunt Bex. Because if Rebekah becomes human again, he will no longer have to fear that the Cure will be used as a weapon against him.
Soon after, frustrated by the events, Caroline and Tyler joined the porch at the Gilbert entrance. They spoke loud enough for Hope and Klaus to hear them.
"Every time I think I have him, that son of a bitch gets the upper hand." grumbled Tyler irritated.
Caroline tried to reassure him, even though she was as uncertain as he.
"We won't let him hurt you. Stefan and Elena will bring back the Cure..."
But her boyfriend was not convinced and spoke to her with anxiety.
"If they get to it first! And if they don't, Klaus kills me! I need to get out of town to figure out how I'm gonna stay alive!"
She came to take him in her arms to encourage him to calm down.
"Wait, hang on, okay? Gosh! Before you get all doomsday, just... At least let me try and talk to him."
Convince Klaus not to kill Tyler? Hope could not see how Caroline could accomplish such a miracle. And Tyler seemed to share her thought.
"He's got nothing to lose, Care. His brother's dead, his hybrids are gone. All he wants right now is blood, starting with mine."
As much as she hated to admit it, Hope knew her father's first hybrid was true. Her father would not hesitate to want Tyler dead. He will stop at nothing to shed blood. Tyler wanted to use the Cure to make her father mortal so he could kill him. But now that there was only one dose, his plan was doomed to failure.
"I'm not gonna say goodbye to you again, do you understand me?" Caroline replied not wanting to accept the facts. "Let me fix this."
Fix this? How?
Intrigued, Hope stayed close to her father, wondering what Caroline had in mind.
Later, she returned to the Gilberts. Hope ate a few sandwiches while her father sat in an armchair, looking calm.
"You can't kill Tyler." Caroline pleaded.
But Klaus kept his haughty look, making the young woman understand that he would not give in.
"Not only can I, I have to. I have a reputation to uphold. Moreover, I want to."
How could Caroline hope to change the mind of an Original hybrid?
But the young woman did not let herself be beaten and continued.
"I'm not asking you to forgive him. All I'm asking is that you let him live, somewhere far from here."
Klaus rose from the chair and stared at her with fury.
"So he gets to live a happy life after he turned all my hybrids against me, after he tried to kill me, after he made it his life's mission to find the Cure so he could use it against me !"
"We all want the Cure!" Caroline replied firmly.
"Do we?" asked Klaus, frowning. "Do you?"
"It doesn't matter. There's only one, so it's not like I'm gonna get it anyway." replied Caroline shaking her head.
"But if you could... you wouldn't, would you?" insisted Klaus.
Caroline remained silent, but Hope could see that her face was betraying her answer.
"You prefer who you are now to the girl you once were." added Klaus rejoicing. "You like being strong, ageless, fearless. We're the same, Caroline."
"Then show me." said Caroline with determination. "You know how much I love Tyler. You can see how scared I am to lose him. If you and I are so similar, then show me your compassion. Show him the mercy that I would show you."
Hope couldn't help but be moved by Caroline and her desire to save the man she loved. If it was Landon's life that was threatened, Hope would fight hard to save his life. It was heartbreaking to see her father dare threaten the happiness of both lovers, even though she understood why her father had been after Tyler.
And if her father took the Cure, he giving up his immortality. Although she knew her father would never do it, she wondered what it would be like to live in a normal family. A life without magic, nor vampires or werewolves. Her parents would be alive. She would no longer be threatened. But would she be happy in this life? And she knew that the Malivore could not be defeated.
"Mercy? For Tyler?" said Klaus moved by Caroline's words.
Hope wondered about her father's intentions. Was he gonna have mercy on Tyler? He seemed to be in conflict with himself, then finally replied with a firm voice.
"Very well. Tell him to leave town immediately. And tell him to run and hide in a place I will never find him."
"Yes, of course." replied Caroline stunned that the Original abdicates to her request.
She turned to leave, then Klaus still firmly resumed.
"Tell him that this is the mercy I extend for your sake... that I will give him a head start before I kill him."
Caroline turned to look him straight in the eye, and understood from his eyes that he was not joking. He agreed to let her boyfriend go out of consideration for her, but that he would not give up on wanting Tyler dead.
After Caroline left, Klaus turned to Hope.
"I haven't changed my mind about Tyler." he says. "I still want to kill him."
"I know." the Tribrid nodded. "Yet today you proved me right. You care about Caroline. If you didn't, you wouldn't let her boyfriend go. You said Caroline and you were same. So do I. She fights for the people she loves, just as I will fight for mine. If it was Landon, I would have acted like Caroline. We are all the same. You care about Caroline, just like you care about me."
Klaus seemed conflicted by Hope's words, then gave her a friendly look.
"You're really adorable, my littlest wolf."
"I can't wait to leave this living room." she replied as she rose from her table.
"Me too." says her father.
Caroline and Tyler stood beside them, saying goodbye with tears and promises of a better life. After hugging and hugging, Tyler separated from Caroline, preparing to leave town as soon as possible.
The hours passed. Caroline had stayed under the Gilbert porch. Her friends had not yet contacted her. Hope was wondering what was going on at this island and how the Quest for the Cure was happening.
She had just finished her provisions and got up to stretch her legs in the little room she had in the Gilbert living room. Then she noticed that she could get out of the magic barrier of the confinement spell.
"I can get out!" she exclaimed. "If I can, then maybe you..."
"Bonnie's spell has ended." her father declared as he left the Gilbert living room. "We are free."
"Finally." rejoices Hope.
Yet she was worried. If the confinement spell had been lifted, and the others hadn't returned to Mystic Falls, then something must have happened to Bonnie. And she hoped that she was still alive, because she needed her to be able to return to her time.
Hope and Klaus left the house by the front door and noticed Caroline who was still under the porch. When she noticed them, she was stunned.
"How did you two get out?" she wondered. "Hope, did you...?"
"I did nothing." replied the Tribrid shrugging her shoulders.
"I fear something awful has befallen your friend Bonnie." replied Klaus.
Seeing that Caroline was about to flee, he reassured her with sympathy.
"Don't worry, love. You know I'd never hurt you."
"You've done enough." she replied, still upset by Tyler's departure.
"I've done more than enough. I've shown kindness, forgiveness, pity... because of you, Caroline. It was all for you."
And in his words, he left the Gilbert house, which meant that he would not wait for the return of Elena and her brother to attack them. If indeed something bad happened on the island, Bonnie must not be the only one to have been hurt. Who else had problems? Damon? Stefan? Jeremy? Elena?
Now that she was free, Hope took advantage of it to stretch her legs. Before returning to the Mikaelson Mansion, she had to do something for Kol. And she needed to get her prism back to talk to Landon.
Discreetly, without Caroline's knowledge, she had returned to the Gilbert house and had finally found her prism at the bottom of the stairs. It must have fallen out of Kol's pocket when he was fighting with Elena and Jeremy.
Then she had picked up Kol's ashes in a small jar, using a spell to retrieve them. After completing what she wanted to do, she left the house holding the jar firmly in her hands.
On the way back, she walked sadly holding the jar that contained Kol's ashes. Then she raised the jar as if to speak to him.
"I'm so sorry, Uncle Kol." said Hope with sadness. "My name is Hope Mikaelson. I'm Klaus' daughter. I'm your niece from the future. And I had to do it. I had to let the Gilberts kill you so that I could be born. I couldn't help it. If you don't die, I don't come into the world. I cannot exist without your death. The Quest for the Cure was to happen exactly as it should. I had no choice. There was no other way. And now… my parents are close to finding themselves to conceive me. And I will do everything for it. I will make your sacrifice contribute to my being born. I promise you, Uncle Kol. And again, I'm sorry."
Later, she arrived at the Mansion and found her father having a glass of bourbon.
"Hope, where have you been?" said the latter when he saw her with the jar.
"I had to do something at the Gilberts before I left," explained Hope.
"And what did you do? What's that?" he asked, noticing the jar.
Hope gently laid the jar on a coffee table in front of him.
"Kol's ashes. I picked it all up. I thought you would want to have a trace of him with you. That you would want have your brother with you, even if he is no longer physically there."
It may be useful to Davina to bring him back from the dead. And that's the least I can do, given that I was involved in his death.
Klaus was shocked to see the jar. For a moment, he remained frozen as if he could not move or speak. Then, he finally joins Hope and took her in his arms, much to the surprise of his daughter. It was the first time her father had held her against him since she arrived in this time.
"Thank you, Hope," he replied in a soft voice. "You have no idea how much it means to me what you did."
Emoted, Hope returned the embrace by standing against him with tears in her eyes.
"It was important to me to do this for you." she said wanting to hold her tears. "I couldn't do it while we were locked in the Gilbert living room. And when Bonnie's spell went away, I could do it."
"Thank you Hope." said Klaus with a moving smile that made Hope emotional.
The next day, Hope got out of bed after a good night's sleep. She had put the prism of Kol in her things. She could communicate with Landon again, even if it wasn't really him.
And she had to find out what happened on the island so that she could anticipate her father's actions, knowing that he was no longer trying to kill the Gilberts.
She contacted Stefan on his phone. A time passed before the latter answered.
"Hey Stefan, I'm just checking in. My call has nothing to do with Klaus or Kol. I want to know what happened on the island. I know Shane managed to get Jeremy and Bonnie away from you. You found the Cure? Did you and your friends get it back?"
"We found the place where the Cure was." Stefan replied. "But someone came by and picked it up before we got there. It was Katherine. The old Petrova doppelgänger before Elena."
Katherine Pierce is involved in all this! But how could she know the existence of the Cure? Dad has been chasing her for five hundred years. She would never have taken the risk of coming to spy on us in the same town where my father is. She's too smart to get caught like that. So how can she know about the Cure?
"I know who Katherine Pierce is." Hope replied surprised by the news. "What happened when you arrived?"
Stefan continued his story.
"Elena and I went to find Bonnie and Jeremy. Damon has been grabbed by a Hunter of the Five. Elena kept going while I was releasing my brother. Then, Katherine attacked her and found Bonnie and Jeremy. I don't know if it happened, but apparently Katherine killed Jeremy. There was no trace of Silas or the Cure. Which means that Katherine took it."
"Jeremy's dead." exclaimed Hope in sadness.
She was not affected by Jeremy's death, but she knew he was the only family left to Elena. And now that he was gone, Elena wasn't going to get up after losing her whole family.
"How is Elena?" she asked, though her question seemed stupid.
There was a long silence before Stefan answered.
"She's not good. She denies reality."
"I understand." replied Hope softly.
She couldn't help but feel empathy for Elena. She just lost her brother. She has no family. Hope still had family, but without her parents it was not the same. And Elena had lost everything.
"I'm really sorry for her. It's horrible what happens to Elena." she said on the phone.
"Only Damon can help her." replied Stefan. "With the sire bond, he can tell her that everything will be fine for her brother. I can't wait for him to come back."
"Come back from where?" asked Hope intrigued.
"Damon stayed on the island looking for Bonnie. Elena will also need her best friend. And speaking of Damon, he taught me something about Katherine and the Cure that concerns your friend Hayley. The wolf at Tyler's. I had understood that she was your friend."
"Hayley? Why do you tell me about her?" asked the Tribrid, amazed at the mention of her mother and knowing that her conception was close.
"Your friend was Katherine's mole." replied Stefan. "She's the one who told her about the Cure. They met in New Orleans."
This revelation shocked Hope. Her mother Hayley knew Katherine Pierce. And did she tell her about the Cure? Hope could never have imagined her mother and Katherine together. They couldn't be friends. Besides, Katherine never had any friends. She was only using others to achieve her ends. She had to promise Hayley information about her family in exchange for information about the Cure.
And if Katherine Pierce had the Cure, that meant she was going to use it against Hope's father.
"Hayley would know where to find Katherine." exclaimed Hope in shock.
"It appears to be true." Stefan told her.
So that was what would make her father and mother meet to sleep together? Was Hope going to be conceived? She hoped that this would happen so that her future could be seen.
Thank you for reading this chapter.
Not much happened to Hope, since she was locked up at the Gilberts and wanted to stay there with her father so as not to compromise her future. In the next chapter, Hope will have new anxieties about her mother's return and the fact that she must sleep with her father so that she can be conceived.
See you soon for a new chapter!
