Later on that day, Bexley had gone back to the house to fill Darry in on what was going on with Rachel. Charlie had left to go hang out with Ponyboy. The two of them had become fast friends.
When Bexley walked into the house, Darry was sitting in the recliner, reading his paper. "Hey, Darry," she greeted him. Darry looked up from the paper he was reading and saw Bexley walking through the front door. "Hey, Bex. How's Rachel doing?" he asked her. Soda had told him what Bexley said when they talked on the phone.
"She'll live," she answered him, looking down at her feet. That instantly concerned Darry and he put his paper down, rising to his feet. "Hey, Bex, what's wrong?" he asked, walking up to her. "I'm just a bit sore from… from what happened back there. I hit him over the head with a bat. I thought he was going to kill her," Bexley told him, not looking at her brother in the eye.
Darry could see how much that event bothered her. He saw it in her eyes. "Don't feel like that, Bex. You saved her life," he told her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "I know I did…" she replied, sitting down on the couch with her head in her hands. There was a lot going through her head. She didn't know what to think.
Darry sat down next to her and he rubbed her back to help soothe her. "That really shook you up, didn't it?" he questioned her. "Yeah… it did. God, I hit him hard enough to kill him," she said, her stomach churning with guilt. "Good, I hope you did," he said.
Bexley was surprised that Darry was okay with her doing this. Any other time, he would've had a fit about it. "I could go to jail for this, Darry…" she said, her hands shaking a bit. "No, you won't. Rachel wouldn't let that happen," he assured her. She looked up at him. "I'm gonna go for a walk, Dar. I'll be back before dinner," she said, needing to clear her head. There was so much going on that she couldn't think straight. He reminded her to keep her blade on her.
Bexley made her way down to the park, not bothering to drive the truck to get there. The park was empty so she had it to herself. She sat on the swings, just thinking about all that had happened. However, her peace didn't last long when she was grabbed by her flannal, yanking her to the ground, making her yelp in pain.
"Surprise, she-grease," a drunk soc said, his words slurring. Bexley stood up, her shoulders aching. "I see you're all alone. Where's your little girlfriend, huh? Heard her old man beat her up. A she-grease like her deserves it," he said, which pissed Bexley off. She took her blade out quickly and she slashed his arm.
He yelped when the blade made contact and he grabbed his bleeding arm. "You little bitch! Get her boys!" that soc said. Three other socs appeared after he said this and they started beating the shit out of her. After they were done, they left her there, disoriented and sick. She could barely move from how badly beaten she was. "Ow…" she moaned, feeling her ribs aching the worst.
Her ears were ringing so loudly that she didn't hear Johnny Cade coming towards her. She rolled onto her back, trying to breathe normally. "Bex? Bexley, are you okay?" he asked, seeing how beat up she was. But she couldn't hear him, letting out a groan of pain. Johnny gathered all the strength he could and he picked her up, carrying her to her house.
"Darry!" Johnny cried out when they made it to the house. Bexley could barely lift her head, her head was spinning too much. Darry heard Johnny's cries and he ran in the living room, seeing the condition that Bexley was in. He helped her onto the couch, making her wince loudly from the pain. "Ow!" she whimpered, her ribs aching really badly.
"Easy, Bex. I gotcha," Darry said, helping her get comfortable on the couch. "My ribs… I think they're broken. They hurt a lot," she said, breathing rapidly from the agonizing pain. Darry gently touched her ribs, making her jump a bit in pain. "Yeah, they are. It's just a couple," he told her.
"Ow!" she cried out in pain. It didn't help that she was covered in bruises and cuts. "It's gonna hurt for a little while. We gotta let them heal on their own. Here, I'll get you an ice pack," he said as he got up to go to the kitchen. While he was in there, Sodapop came home and instantly saw his battered twin sister on the couch.
"Oh, my god, what happened?!" he exclaimed, rushing to her side in a panic. Darry came back inside the living room with a bag of ice in his hand. "She was jumped by the socs while she was out," Darry said as he lifted her shirt. He put the ice pack against her tender ribs, which made her jump in pain.
"Damn, Socs," Soda growled. "They broke some of her ribs," Darry said, holding the ice pack against her busted ribs. This pissed Soda off even more; It made him want to punch something. "I wanna go to my bed…" Bexley whimpered, tears of pain in her eyes. Darry didn't hesitate to bring her to her bed by carrying her.
He pulled the blankets up to her chest. "Stay in bed, okay? You need to rest for a bit," he said to her. "O-Okay…" she whimpered, turning to her side, which aggravated her ribs even more. Darry waited until she was asleep before he left the room, shutting the door. He let out a defeated sigh.
