First off, thank you all for the reviews! They keep me motivated to write and update my stories more frequently! I appreciate the time you guys take to leave me a little message and hope to continue seeing your feedback.
Second, I have spent a lot of time brainstorming how I want this story to flow and the overall outcome I want out of it. As I mentioned, this will be a part 1 and a part 2. We are still in part one and have a few more chapters before entering the second part of this story. I do want to warn you that we have a massive tragedy coming that is necessary for this story to become what I think it needs to be. So, buckle up guys!
Derek's old blue Ford Bronco pulled into the suburban campground of their small town and the sight before his eyes was one that he had become accustomed to over the years of being dragged to this event by his parents. The whole place was buzzing as the sun was setting with the many acres of space lit up by carnival rides, bright lights, and the laughter of people young and old. He turned to look at the girl that had told him she wanted to be taken out and got caught up momentarily on how she looked sitting in the passenger seat of his old hand-me-down truck that his dad had given him on his 17th birthday. The sun was behind her and in the light her green eyes contained golden flecks that mesmerized him. She wore a denim spaghetti strap dress that hit well above her knees and her white Ked tennis shoes looked brand new and a smile as she beamed out at all the excitement going on in front of them. He, however, couldn't get over just how beautiful this girl really was, and he mentally noted that he needed to hold on to this image in his head for as long as his brain would allow. He never wanted to forget how she looked or how he felt right in this moment.
"Are we going to get out of your truck or are you just trying to stare at me all night?" Meredith asked with a teasing tone to her voice and Derek rolled his eyes.
"This is a date. Dates are supposed to be romantic and the people going on the date are supposed to be nice to one another." Derek bit back matching her tone.
The jest never bothered him, he usually really loved it and had a good time with her when they were seemingly at each other's throats, but he wanted tonight to be nice. He just wanted to pretend like they were a normal couple who went on normal dates and had a good time together without verbally attacking the other with below the belt punch lines and sexual tension that made them bicker nonstop.
"I can be nice." She told him batting her eyelashes at him to prove her point.
"Oh, I know you can." He told her seductively and leaned in for a kiss which she was quick to return. He cut it short reluctantly and told her to wait as he went to get out of his truck. Quickly, he made his way to her side and opened the door for her.
"That was cute. I never took you for a gentleman" she told him with a laugh as he took her hand. He laced his fingers through hers and smiled at the sight before grinning at her.
"I'm a cute man and remember, you're supposed to be nice today" He replied with a laugh.
"You're right" she agreed taking a deep breath and bracing herself for the reaction when Amy got there. It was the first time she really thought through her decision to just show up publicly with Derek as her date with no clue in the world how Amelia would feel about any of this. Truthfully, she still wasn't 100% sure how she felt about it but she didn't want to spend the rest of her summer sneaking around when Amelia was already suspicious about where she was spending her time.
"It's easy to be nice to me. On top of being a very cute gentleman, I'm also hot and practically a genius." He added as he walked them toward the ticket line. The line wasn't too long, and they would be enjoying all the summer festival had to offer very soon. It wasn't their first time hanging out at this town event together, but it was the first time intentionally going with one another and they both wanted it to be special.
"You really like yourself huh?" Meredith asked subtly calling out his lack of humility that he loved to display at times.
He shrugged "Just hiding my pain." He countered and they laughed together at his joke.
He purchased two tickets for them, and Meredith's eyes lit up as she ran around the festival with a child-like spirit that he rarely saw in her. It rare that she got excited or showed much emotion. He figured that it had come from her mother's lack of emotional availability. He met Ellis Grey really just once. When he decided he wanted to become a surgeon, his parents encouraged him to go introduce himself and see if there were any pre-internship or volunteer programs at Mass Gen that he could get involved with. Ellis was as cold as a rough winter in New England could get and from what Amy shared, she was just as cold to her daughter. He quickly snapped out of his thoughts regarding Ellis as he wanted to spend as much time in the present with Meredith as he could.
Meredith held his hand and dragged him around booth after booth. She won herself a very large stuffed animal that he was forced to carry, they rode the Ferris Wheel multiple times as well as riding multiple other rides. There was even a photobooth and he excitedly dragged her into it, where they made funny faces and kissed for the camera. He didn't really have any pictures of them besides the ones that his mom had taken over the years, but they were never really together in them, and he was glad to have these. After they took photos, he guided her by the wrist to a deserted section of the event and kissed her deeply. He used his tongue to lick the leftover taste of cotton candy from her lips and she giggled at the way it felt. He left her giant stuffed bear on the ground and wrapped his arms around her sweaty body. It was a hot night and there was a light sweat on her face and arms that he was finding himself slightly aroused by. She tasted like a mix of salty and sweet from the sweat and cotton candy and he couldn't stop the need to be in her orbit. Meredith began deepening the kiss and it quickly turned into a full on make out session as Derek's hands caressed her ass lifting her up so he could hold her closer.
"I can't control myself around you." He whispered huskily against her lips before she leaned back into the kiss tasting him and devouring his lips all in one. Meredith could feel Derek harden as her body pressed closer and closer against him and although she didn't want to stop, there were people everywhere and she knew he would be uncomfortable with a full-on erection in a public place or maybe he wouldn't, but she couldn't satisfy that now. With one final deep and lingering kiss she pulled away and both felt like they were in an utter daze. They were at the peak of summer and there were words on the tip of both of their tongues dying to be uttered and dying to be felt. His eyes searched hers begging to see confirmation in them that she felt the same and he found it. Her eyes told him what her lips couldn't yet, and he was positive that his did the same.
He gently took her hand and studied it, lacing his fingers through hers and bringing her hand up to his lips for a light kiss. There was something so intimate and gentle about his action and Meredith dared to dream "is this love" over and over in her head.
She was about to speak up when they heard Amy yelling from a bottle game about 12 feet away. She was cursing loudly about not hitting the ball to the stack of empty coke bottles in her typical brass Amy fashion.
Both Derek and Meredith began to laugh at Amelia's antics, and Derek was happy in that moment that his sister had someone a "person" as they called it, that truly understood her and accepted her for who she was, because she was a handful and if he was honest, there were times he couldn't stand Amelia. However, Meredith always had her back, always looked out for her, and always loved her and that made his heart swell and made him feel something even deeper for this enchanting girl who's hand he was currently holding.
"We should go over there." Meredith told Derek and he rolled his eyes playfully but ultimately agreed.
"When she sees us like this, she's going to know Mer." Derek told her gesturing between their intertwined fingers.
"It's not the worst thing in the world, is it?" Meredith asked and he offered her nothing more than an mhmm as he picked up her prize with his free hand and guided her towards his sister and her boyfriend.
"This is rigged! Every year the whole world says screw you Amelia Shepherd no prize for you." Amelia screeched and Meredith grinned at Derek who seemed amused himself with his sister's passion.
"It wasn't rigged when I won." Meredith said triumphantly causing Amelia to quickly turn around.
"Mer!" she yelled out pulling her person in for a hug.
Meredith hugged her back tightly "Don't be mad at me" she told her friend lightly as she hugged her.
Amelia stepped back "Oh, what did you do Meredith Grey?" she asked before her eyes landed on her brother and then on her best friend's hands interlocked with said brother.
"Derek? Wait, what are you two doing here together?" Amelia asked her eyes wide.
"We're dating I guess." Derek answered scratching his free hand against the back of his head uncomfortably.
"No, you're not. You two hate eachother. Like actually hate one another. Like, if one of you had the opportunity to poison the other, I would have to hide the arsenic and hope one of you never found it."
"We don't hate eachother." Meredith supplied with an eyeroll.
"This is a joke. You're messing with me by pretending to do something I know you would never do. Matt, tell me this is just a joke." Amelia exclaimed turning to her boyfriend for confirmation, but his confused features made her turn back to her brother and the best friend she called her person.
"You two can't date. It's just, it's grosse" Amelia told them a frown line forming on her face looking at the two in disbelief.
"It's really not a big deal Amy" Derek told her growing impatient with his sisters typical dramatics.
"It is. She's my, she's my person Derek and you're my brother and you're a manwhore. You're going to hurt her, and I will kill you if you hurt her." Amelia exclaimed unleashing her anger at her brother.
"I'm not a man whore Amy, and I'm not going to hurt your person. I-" Derek started to get into how he felt about Meredith but he hadn't even told her yet at this point and stopped himself as Meredith deserved to hear his true feelings one on one not to prove a point to his sister.
"You what?" Amy asked moving her hands to her hips in exasperation.
"I'm not going to hurt her Amy." Derek reiterated slowly hoping his sister's anger would calm down.
"Mer, it's my brother. How could you and with Derek?" Amelia fumed turning her attention to her person.
Meredith's eyes blazed. If there was one thing she hated, it was being told what to do and she had every right to explore her connection with Derek regardless of who's brother he was.
"You two have been lying all summer, haven't you? That's where you've been Mer. You've been God knows where fucking around with my brother!" Amelia shouted starting to cause a scene.
"Yeah, I have been with Derek, and I don't owe you any explanations for how I choose to spend my time. I love you and I know you love me, don't make this into a thing Amelia." Meredith tried calming her friend while still maintaining that she hadn't actually done anything wrong.
"Don't make this into a thing? You're fucking my only brother and you two lied to me about it for weeks. It's already a thing." Amelia continued growing more and more angry.
"God, you love the dramatics, Amy. You love causing a huge scene and laying out what my life should look like. I have always been there for you. I've always championed you and for once I do something that makes me happy, and you have a problem with it. I shouldn't even be surprised." Meredith told her calmly. She hated dramatic scenes like this and was feeling embarrassed seeing the way people were looking over at them.
It was easy for her to take a quick trip down memory lane. They loved eachother deeply, but Amelia called the shots and Meredith let her. They went to the same school because it's where Amelia wanted to go. They usually based their plans around what Amelia wanted and when everything had started with Derek, Meredith told herself if Amy had a problem with it then she would end it. Well, the moment came and for once she refused to back-down and do what Amelia wanted. She wanted Derek and she wasn't letting her person win this one.
"That's not true. I'm a good friend to you Meredith. All I ask is that you don't lie to me, and you don't fuck my brother."
"You ask for so much more than that and I don't want to get into it right now. I thought you would be happy for me."
Amelia sighed and looked back at her brother who stood watching the two unsure of what to do or how to interject.
"I want you to end it." Amelia said looking at her brother determined. If Meredith wouldn't listen to reason then she would get her brother to.
"I don't want to Amelia and I'm not going to." Derek told his sister tightening his grip on Meredith's hand.
"Then you're both dead to me." Amelia told them and stomped off with her boyfriend following behind her.
Meredith watched them leave with a fire in her eyes. She hated fighting with Amelia, but she wasn't going to be told what to do or who she was allowed to spend her time with. She was happy when she was with Derek and he made her forget about all her mommy issues, her daddy issues, and the secrets she kept buried deep inside.
Derek stayed quiet as he took her hand and led her back to his truck. They both felt a bit embarrassed by Amelia's loud public display about their "fucking". Too many people had stopped what they were doing and stared in interest and staying didn't feel like an option after Amy stormed away.
Derek opened the door for Meredith, and she jumped in quickly ready to put this night to bed. It was nice while it lasted.
"Can I show you something before I take you home?" Derek asked quietly before starting up the truck looking at Meredith trying to read her face. She was staring out the window and he could tell she was deep in thought over her fight with his sister.
Meredith nodded and they spent the car ride in total silence.
He drove for a while, before coming up a heavily wooded area and parking his trunk along a bank.
Meredith turned to him with a furrowed brow "Derek after tonight I'm really not in the mood for whatever this is." Meredith said motioning to the pitch black.
"Can you just trust me? Please? I promise this is something you want to see." He told her.
Meredith sighed deeply "Okay" she replied softly.
Derek helped her out of his trunk and took her hand as they entered what Meredith could only describe as a forest. Immediately, she felt the cool breeze of the night brushing against her skin, and it sent a small shiver up her back. The towering trees were cloaked in darkness but as they continued walking deeper through the forest, she could begin to hear the sound of a stream, gurgling softly in the distance as the full moon begin to illuminate their path. The sound of the stream grew louder as they approached and Meredith found herself standing by the edge of a small river, its waters crystal clear and reflecting the moonlight. The stream was lined by smooth stones and lush green moss, and she turned to see Derek grinning at her because he was right. This was a sight worth fully trusting him on.
They found a comfortable spot to sit by the stream, both just taking in the sight before them and thinking about the events of the night.
"My dad and I come out here from time to time and fish. Being the only men in a house full of girls could sometimes feel like tonight did and it's been our escape." Derek told her.
"You want me to fish with you?" Meredith asked almost horrified.
"No, I thought we could make our own memory out here." Derek replied her with an easy smile wanting nothing more than to cheer her up from her fight with his sister.
"Oh" Meredith conceded. She dipped her feet into the stream making a slight noise at how cold the water was.
"The water stays pretty cold even in the warm months"
"It feels good" Meredith muttered.
She sat and looked out at the water and Derek did the same neither of them daring to utter a word until it felt right. There was so much up in the air with Amy's reaction to their relationship. Derek didn't exactly know how she would take it, but he wasn't expecting that, and he knew Meredith wasn't either. In the beginning, Meredith told him that if Amelia didn't want them together than she would have to end it and that thought scared him more than he was comfortable to admit. They had spent countless moments, days, nights and the in-between together since Meredith's proclamation and he hoped that she had changed her mind. She did tell Amy they were staying together but she could always change her mind as she thought things through more. He looked over to see her still looking at the water, her face expressionless but her feet swayed in the water and her skin looked illuminous.
He was about to break the silence when she turned and looked at him.
"Derek, I meant what I said. I'm not ending anything. I love Amy and she's my person but I don't….. I can't…. I'm just…. I'm not ending it." Meredith struggled to get her words out. She couldn't figure out the right words to tell him how strong her feelings for him really were and tonight didn't feel like the right night to fully lay anything out there.
"I'm not ending this. I want you. I want to be with you." She continued stronger and more confident in what she was saying this time.
Derek smiled at her "I want you too." He told her softly and brought his hand to her cheek. He didn't lean in to kiss her, instead he traced her facial features. He traced down her forehead to the tip of her nose before smiling and moving his finger to trace the outline of her lips. Lips that he had kissed day after day. It was a feeling that he could see himself getting used to and one that he had gotten used to already. He loved kissing her and holding her. He loved just talking to her about life and school. He was a man now and he was beginning to want things that he had never wanted before like stability and one woman to come home to. These weren't thoughts he had before Meredith and him started this thing and now he couldn't see anything but them being together.
Meredith took his finger and brought it to her lips kissing it softly before tilting her head to the side and telling him with her eyes that she wanted him.
Derek brought his hand to push her hair back and held her hair in place as his lips captured hers intensely. She moaned into his kiss as his hands lingered down her body to rest at her waist pulling her closer against him. Meredith deepened the kiss and his tongue danced with hers before their lips went back to sucking the others with an unmovable force. Derek pulled her so she was on his lap as their lips never left the others and his hands started roaming her thighs before moving to unbutton her dress.
"Derek" Meredith sighed into his lips in a total trance. He kissed her deeper before she could get more words out until he had her dress fully unbuttoned, and his hands snaked around her now naked waist.
"Do you have a blanket?" Meredith asked between kisses letting him know she didn't want to have sex in the dirt.
"Hold on" he replied huskily having to force himself to physically part from her.
She moved off him and stripped her dress, so she stood before him in just her black bra and panties. He smiled at the sight.
"I think I have the blanket from last time in my trunk. Stay here. Don't move. Wait for me." He told her with a grin, and she rolled her eyes playfully.
She turned back to look at the water as Derek walked back to his truck for a blanket and smiled at sight before her and the moonlight. It really was mesmerizing.
She began to undress watching the full moon and danced and laughed feeling completely free in the moonlight. She was in a world all her own until she felt eyes on her and Derek stood with a grin watching her carefree demeaner with the blanket spread behind him.
Her hunger was back and in seconds she was in his arms kissing him passionately.
He pulled back after attacking her mouth with the most passionate kisses he could provide and took in the full sight of her catching his breath in his throat before lowering her down on top of him on the blanket he laid out.
As their lips met, the world around them faded away. The only thing that existed in that moment was the warmth and passion that flowed between them. Their tongues danced together in a sensual tango, exploring each other's mouths, and igniting a fiery desire within.
Their bodies pressed tightly together, their hands exploring every inch of each other as they feverishly kissed. The soft touch of fingers caressed cheeks, the tender exploration of hands on hips and backs, and the gentle tracing of fingertips on the nape of the neck, all serving to fuel their passion.
Every breath they took was heavy with anticipation, every touch electrifying as they deepened the kiss. The sounds of their breathing and the faint whispers of each other's names were the only things that could be heard in the outdoor air.
As the intensity grew, Derek maneuvered Meredith so that she was on top of him and slowly he entered her eliciting a moan from Meredith as she began to ride him.
"Meredith" he breathed over and over as she quickened the pace and felt his resolve ending. Meredith moaned out as Derek's grip on her tightened and together they both exploded with passion.
As they lay there, Meredith couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. She had been with other men before, but none of them had ever made her feel this way. With Derek, everything just felt right - like they were meant to be together.
Derek turned to her, his eyes soft and full of affection. "I'm glad you're here with me."
Meredith's heart swelled at his words "Me too, Derek," she whispered, reaching up to stroke his cheek.
They lay there in silence for a few more moments, just enjoying the warmth of each other's bodies and the words still left unsaid.
"Meredith?" Derek whispered as his fingers drew stars on her bare back.
"Yeah?" she asked
"I'm sorry for everything. All the years of fighting and a lot of things I've said to you over the years. I wish I could take a lot of those words back." Bottom of Form
"I'm sorry too. Amy really thought we hated one another."
"I guess in a way we did but I don't ever want to get back to that place with you. I don't want to say horrible things to you or make you feel badly ever."
"Me too." Meredith whispered and kissed his shoulder softly.
