75 Years Chapter 2
Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games
The Second Hunger Games
With the success of the First Hunger Games, Dr. Gaul decided to allow the Games to continue, ignoring Casca Highbottom's protests that the punishment should end. Like the first Hunger Games, the Second Hunger Games was to take place in the City Arena. There was speculation that the District 2 Reapings was rigged, as the female Tribute was the sister to the male Tribute in the First Games. A brother and sister from District 11 was one of the 24 Reaped
The Tributes:
District 1: Florence Sykes (16), Tarquin Henshaw (17)
District 2: Gemma Turner (17), Trolius Critchley (18)
District 3: Yuna Wexford (16), Quint Sampson (15)
District 4: Henriette Waverley (15), William Zeriporath (13)
District 5: Corinne Sakata (14), Percy West (13)
District 6: Emeline Bader (17), Charles Sharman (15)
District 7: Martha Kirkman (13), Jack Oxenbridge (12)
District 8: Esther Reinhold (12), Virgil Barde (17)
District 9: Arianne Montford (14), Goddard Davis (15)
District 10: Daniella Hertzen (13), Francesc Dove (13)
District 11: Fern Norman (16), Martin Norman (18)
District 12: Linda Swift (17), Gregory Burns (18)
Like the First Hunger Games, the Second was another short Games. Like those from the First Hunger Games, the Tributes of the Second Hunger Games were ill-treated in the Stables prior to the Games. No sooner than the Games began a small girl from District 8 perished, her tiny body malnourished through starvation
24th: Esther Reinhold, District 8. Second Hunger Games. Starvation
By noon, another three Tributes had perished due to illness
23rd: Corinne Sakata, District 5. Second Hunger Games. Pneumonia
22nd: William Zeriporath, District 4. Second Hunger Games. Pneumonia
21st: Florence Sykes, District 1. Second Hunger Games. Pneumonia
Meanwhile, the District 10 Tributes, Daniella Hertzen and Francesc Dove, had teamed up into an alliance to ensure that one of them have a better chance of survival. Daniella had a cut on her head, a result of the door of the Stables hitting her as soon as it was shut, while Francesc was dealing with a bruised hip as a result of being roughly shoved in the Stables. So both Tributes decided to stick together knowing their injuries would kill them or another Tribute might. On the other side of the Arena, Trolius Critchley of District 2, had found a sword and was cleaving at a Tribute he shoved to the ground from District 11
20th: Martin Norman, District 11. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Trolius
Little did Trolius knew, Martin was shielding his stricken sister, who herself was dealing with an infection. Fern screamed in fear as Trolius' sword entered her neck, and moments later she was silenced
19th: Fern Norman, District 11. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Trolius
Looking at the decimated corpses of the District 11 Tributes, Trolius smirked. As Day 1 was drawing to a close, Tarquin Henshaw of District 1 had found a spear, which he used to spear a Tribute.
18th: Arianne Montford, District 9. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Tarquin
As the temperatures in the Arena fell, the majority of Tributes fled to a warmer part of the Arena, however, several remained out in the open. To show how cowardice should be punished, Dr. Gaul had locked Gemma Turner of District 2 out of the locker rooms. She and five other Tributes froze to death, collateral damage to strike fear into District 2
17th: Gemma Turner, District 2. Second Hunger Games. Exposure
16th: Francesc Dove, District 10. Second Hunger Games. Exposure
15th: Yuna Wexford, District 3. Second Hunger Games. Exposure
14th: Daniella Hertzen, District 10. Second Hunger Games. Exposure
13th: Jack Oxenbridge, District 7. Second Hunger Games. Exposure
12th: Percy West, District 5. Second Hunger Games. Exposure
As Day 2 dawned, a Tribute died after an asthmatic attack
11th: Martha Kirkman, District 7. Second Hunger Games. Asthma
Hours into Day 2, two Tributes perished of thirst
10th: Quint Sampson, District 3. Second Hunger Games. Dehydration
9th: Henriette Waverley, District 4. Second Hunger Games. Dehydration
Mid-afternoon of Day 2 saw Tarquin spear through the neck of the boy from District 2
8th: Trolius Critchley, District 2. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Tarquin
Tarquin, hoping to bring District 1 their second Victor, spotted a pair of District 6 Tributes. Grabbing Trolius' sword, he approached each Tribute. Neither Emeline Bader or Charles Sharman made any attempt to flee, and Tarquin plunged the sword and spear into their emaciated bodies
7th: Emeline Bader, District 6. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Tarquin
6th: Charles Sharman, District 6. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Tarquin
By evening of Day 2, Tarquin had dispatched two more Tributes: a boy from District 9 who was attempting to go into hiding, and a boy from District 12 who was dealing with a broken leg
5th: Goddard Davis, District 9. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Tarquin
4th: Gregory Burns, District 12. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Tarquin
Overnight, a girl from District 12 starved to death
3rd: Linda Swift, District 12. Second Hunger Games. Starvation
By Day 3, Tarquin decided to sleep for a few hours, which was proved to be a fatal mistake. It was during this time Virgil Barde of District 8, having spent the Games avoiding a fight, managed to creep up to him and within moments, armed with a machete, managed to take down Tarquin.
2nd: Tarquin Henshaw, District 1. Second Hunger Games. Killed by Virgil
Victor: Virgil Barde, District 8. Second Hunger Games
Virgil was relieved to return to District 8
Aftermath:
District 1 was left furious by Tarquin's decision to go for a nap, while District 8 was unsure of how Virgil won the Games. Even Virgil himself was left baffled by his victory, and nothing more was said. Virgil lived up until the Second Quarter Quell's Victory Tour, after which he died of infection. The Second Hunger Games was dubbed "The Most Boring Games in History", which it held up until the 68th Hunger Games. Linda Swift's third place finish would start a run of third-place finishes for District 12 lasting up until the 6th Hunger Games. Copies of The Second Games, like the other nine Games before it, was wiped by Dr. Gaul after the Tenth Hunger Games. Notably, this was the first Hunger Games in which more than three Tributes were killed by another Tribute, with nine Tribute-caused deaths. Below is a note by Dr. Gaul on the Second Hunger Games:
I did not expect an Outlier Tribute to win the Games. I didn't expect that District 1 boy to have a killer instinct at all, and I reckon the next Games should have at least ten Tributes killed by another Tribute.
Trivia: Fern and Martin Norman would be the first siblings to participate in the same Hunger Games, but they won't be the last
Gemma Turner was the first Tribute to be related to a Tribute from a previous Games; since then The Games had siblings, cousins and in one case, an aunt and nephew as Tributes
