75 Years Chapter 9

Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games

With construction of the proposed Arena now underway, approval to start construction on the 12th, 13th and 14th Hunger Games Arenas was made. The need for diverse Arenas was due to the declining viewership of the Hunger Games, with the 8th Hunger Games having the lowest total viewers of any Games to date, and Dr. Gaul knew the City Arena cannot be used forever.

Pre-Games:

As usual by this point, a few Tributes died before the Games, and the 9th Hunger Games was no different. The day before the Games, an earthquake struck the abandoned library the Tributes was staying in, killing four Tributes when they were crushed by the debris

24th: Vincent Cooper, District 7. Ninth Hunger Games. Crushed by masonary

23rd: Margaret Plantagent, District 1. Ninth Hunger Games. Crushed by masonary

22nd: Ewe Potter, District 10. Ninth Hunger Games. Crushed by masonary

21st: Rollo Unsworth, District 1. Ninth Hunger Games. Crushed by masonary.

The Games:

With District 1 out of the running for the second consecutive year, the remaining twenty Tributes ran towards the Weapons Pile. Hestia Curl and Therin Lee, the District 2 Tributes, grabbed a weapon each and started to attack any Tribute that approached the pile. Therin's dagger entered the chest of a District 4 boy, who had spotted a trident in the pile.

20th: Kainalu Milton, District 4. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Therin

A limping District 11 girl, tripped and fell heavily, further making her injury worse. Hestia, seeing the girl on the ground, walked over and calmly slashed the girl's throat.

19th: Blossom Arteta, District 11. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Hestia

A girl from District 3 started fighting with the District 7 girl. Grabbing a knife, the District 3 girl stabbed the District 7 girl to death

18th: Dinah Beckham, District 7. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Layla

Of course, Layla Sharpe didn't anticipate that the District 2 boy was nearby, and he killed the District 3 female by a stab wound to the gut

17th: Layla Sharpe, District 3. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Therin

Nearby, a boy from District 10 was chasing down the District 5 male. Armed with a throwing knife, Francis' hurled the knife. Samir gasped as the blade entered his back before falling to the ground.

16th: Samir Khan, District 5. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Francis

By this time, the District 2 Tributes entered a melee involving Thor from District 3, Ondine from District 4, Becky from District 5 and the District 6 Tributes. Upon seeing the melee, Francis, along with the District 8, District 9 and District 12 Tributes, plus Heron from District 11, entered the fray. The melee was over weapons, and resulted in the deaths of 90% of the field. With an axe, Edric of District 9 chopped off the head of the District 11 boy, who saw that entering the melee was a big mistake

15th: Heron Vieira, District 11. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Edric

Both Tributes from District 12 was killed in the chaos, one with a knife in her throat, the other nearly cleaved apart

14th: Coleen Weir, District 12. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Hestia

13th: Ashley Compton, District 12. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Edric

A girl from District 8 screamed as Therin's dagger pierced her chest

12th: Lacey Scholfield, District 8. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Therin

A trident soon entered the back of a fleeing District 3 boy

11th: Thor Chang, District 3. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Ondine

Edric screamed as Therin's knife plunged into his neck

10th: Edric Drake, District 9. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Therin

The District 6 Tributes were the next to fall in the chaos of the melee, the boy bled to death after his limbs were hacked off by Therin's axe

9th: Samantha Renee, District 6. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Ondine

8th: Alexander Wright, District 6. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Therin

Francis Murphy, armed with a small dagger, attempted to kill Hestia Curl. Hestia turned around and slit Francis' throat, ending District 10's hopes of gaining a Victor

7th: Francis Murphy, District 10. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Hestia

By this time just five Tributes was left in the melee, with District 8's Llywellyn Searson having escaped the chaos. Armed with a sword, Llywellyn hid, knowing he had grabbed the only sword in the pile. Meanwhile, back by the weapons pile, Ondine threw a spear she pulled from the pile through two girls attempting to flee the chaos.

6th: Becky Mitrovic, District 5. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Ondine

5th: Angelica Truss, District 9. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Ondine

Now with the field cut down to four, none of the Tributes that fought and participated in the melee was in the best condition. Therin, Hestia, Ondine and Llywellyn all had cuts and injuries. Noticing the sword was gone, Therin decided to find the thief. On a bench outside the field he found the culprit, the District 8 male. Llywellyn was sleeping as Therin approached, and with one single stab, the District 8 boy was sent into dreamland.

4th: Llywellyn Searson, District 8. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Therin

Taking the sword, Therin made his way back to the weapons pile. Ondine, upon seeing the sword, was determined to use it, and in a split second, Therin was on the end of the trident, never having the chance to use the sword

3rd: Therin Lee, District 2. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Ondine.

With two Tributes left, Ondine threw her trident to the side, allowing for Hestia to grab the weapon. Hestia knew her brother, Paris, would be watching at home. In District 4, the sailors as well as a fourteen-year-old girl was watching and hoping Ondine would return home as a Victor. Because of how weak the two girls were, from the treatment in the abandoned library and as a result, Hestia was able to plunge the trident into Ondine's chest.

2nd: Ondine Wharton, District 4. Ninth Hunger Games. Killed by Hestia

1st: Hestia Curl, District 2. Ninth Hunger Games. VICTOR

Hestia turned towards the corpse of her fallen District Partner. "I'm sorry Therin" she muttered.

Aftermath:

District 2 welcomed their second Victor with open arms. Paris helped support Hestia through her nightmares as a result of what she went through in the Ninth Hunger Games. Hestia married and had kids, and died shortly after the 69th Hunger Games. Like many of the "Early Victors" Hestia soon faded into obscurity. Her great-great-great nephew Cato Harris would become the final Tribute to die in the 74th Hunger Games. Hestia would become the first Headmistress of the Tribute Academy in District 2. Hestia, like her brother, was dubbed "The Proto-Career". Both Curl siblings would become the first sibling pair to win the Hunger Games, a feat that would not be repeated until the 29th Hunger Games with District 3's Rowe Brothers and the 64th Hunger Games when Cashmere Ritchson won the Hunger Games; her twin brother, Gloss, won the 63rd Hunger Games. Incidentally, both Curl siblings lived long enough to witness the Ritchson Twins match this feat. Like the games prior to the 11th Hunger Games, copies of the Ninth Hunger Games would be wiped a year later. Below is Dr. Gaul's thoughts:

With how reckless the Tributes are, and with declining viewership in the Capitol, I have decided to start up a Mentor Programme, with the Tributes in the next Hunger Games being Mentored by students at the Academy. Perhaps that is one way to increase viewership, maybe an interview as well?

At a length of fifteen hours, the Ninth Hunger Games would become the shortest Hunger Games on record.

So yeah, we have Hestia's Games, and the shortest Hunger Games on record; helped by the fact nearly every Tribute was involved in the melee. The fourteen-year-old girl will appear later on. Yes, both Hestia and Therin used different weapons in the melee
