75 Years Chapter 10

Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Game

With work on the "Lagoon Arena" close to completion, it was decided the 10th Hunger Games will be the last Hunger Games to use the City Arena. The Games became notable for the introduction of "Mentors". Unlike later Games, these Mentors were not the previous Victors, but instead students from the Academy. Twenty four top students were chosen as Mentors, amongst them, future President of Panem Coriolanus Snow, who was selected as Mentor to the District 12 female Tribute. This was also the first Games to have a Pre-Games interview, with weatherman Lucky Flickerman selected to interview the Tributes. This also marked the first Games in which Tributes received Sponsorship gifts. All in all, the 10th Hunger Games was a major milestone in the development of the Hunger Games.

The Tributes:

District 1: Velvereen Howard (16), Facet Boleyn (17)

District 2: Sabyn Rosicky (17), Marcus Lance (18)

District 3: Teslee Fontana (13), Circ Abold (16)

District 4: Coral Lansing (15), Mizzen Dillon (13)

District 5: Sol Benson (15), Hy Dinkleage (16)

District 6: Ginnee Zegler (14), Otto Blyth (16)

District 7: Lamina Boehm (15), Treech Berrecloth (14)

District 8: Wovey Sanchez (14), Bobbin Gibson (16)

District 9: Sheaf Liao (13), Panlo Schafer (17)

District 10: Brandy Kuse (17), Tanner Brutscheidt (17)

District 11: Dill Steeples (14), Reaper Ash (17)

District 12: Lucy Grey Baird (16), Jessup Diggs (18)

Pre-Games:

The 10th Hunger Games' Reaping Day was on July 4th, which was a Monday. On July 7th, a Thursday, Arachne Crane, the Mentor to the District 10 Female, Brandy Kuse, was killed when Brandy slit her throat. The Peacekeepers, armed with guns, shot Brandy dead.

24th: Brandy Kuse, District 10. Tenth Hunger Games. Shot by Peacekeepers

On Saturday, July 9th, the remaining Tributes and their Mentors went on tour of the Capitol Arena. During the tour, rebel bombs went off, killing two Tributes and their Mentors, Apollo and Diana Ring

23rd: Ginnee Zegler, District 6. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by rebel bombs

22nd: Otto Blyth, District 6. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by rebel bombs

In the midst of the chaos, the Districts 1 and 2 Tributes attempted to flee, but with Peacekeepers around, the District 1 Tributes ended up dead, shot by the Peacekeepers.

21st: Facet Boleyn, District 1. Tenth Hunger Games. Shot by Peacekeepers

20th: Velvereen Howard, District 1. Tenth Hunger Games. Shot by Peacekeepers

Sabyn Rosicky, having made it farther than the District 1 Tributes, attempted to climb over a wall. However, the wall was unstable as a result of the bombing. Sabyn lost her footing and fell down, the fall killing her

19th: Sabyn Rosicky, District 2. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by fall

Several hours later, the District 9 Tributes perished from their injuries; Gaius Breen, Mentor to Panlo Schafer, would die days later. Only Androcles Anderson, the mentor to Sheaf Liao, would survive.

18th: Panlo Schafer, District 9. Tenth Hunger Games. Complications from rebel bombs

17th: Sheaf Liao, District 9. Tenth Hunger Games. Complications from rebel bombs

On July 15th, the first ever Interviews was held, at the suggestion of Coriolanus Snow, the Mentor to District 12's Lucy Grey Baird. Titled The Hunger Games: A Night of Interviews, the Interviews lacked the polish of Tribute Interviews in later years. On Sunday, July 17th, the Mentors were given a tour of the Games Headquarters, where they were shown the prototypes of the drones that will be used to deliver sponsorship gifts to the Tributes, the first Games to have Sponsorships. Overnight, the District 5 boy passed away as a result of the asthma

16th: Hy Dinkleage, District 5. Tenth Hunger Games. Asthma

The Games:

The remaining Tributes entered the Arena, and were greeted by the sight of Marcus Lance tied to steel beams that hung in the air, badly beaten. In the Games Headquarters, Sejanus Plinth, the Mentor to Marcus, screamed in shock at the sight of his Tribute. Thirty minutes after the start of the Games, Lamina Boehm, the District 7 girl, climbed up the poles, went over to Marcus, and spoke to him. After speaking to him she swished an axe to his neck three times, killing him.

15th: Marcus Lance, District 2. Tenth Hunger Games. Mercy killed by Lamina

This action saw Lamina receive the first Sponsors' gift, a bottle of water. Lamina removed Marcus' body from it's shackles, sending it down to the ground, and tied some rope around her as she slept. On the ground, Circ and Teslee, the District 3 Tributes, went over to the barricade and found the broken drones. They found that fiddling with the drones' wires activated them. For their intelligence, both Tributes received some water and bread before taking the drones back to their hiding place. Meanwhile, Reaper appeared from the tunnels, carrying his District Partner, Dill. Dill had been suffering from tuberculosis, and as Reaper lay her on the ground she started coughing violently, blood pouring out from her mouth. The Sponsors sent two water bottles, but she was too ill to acknowledge the bottles. Even the Capitol couldn't find a way to treat tuberculosis at the time. Treech, the District 7 male, took the bottles away. By sunset, Dill was dead

14th: Dill Steeples, District 11. Tenth Hunger Games. Tuberculosis

Later that night, Sejanus Plinth sneaked into the Arena, in an attempt to retrieve the body of Marcus and perform the District 2 custom of scattering breadcrumbs over the deceased. On the urging of Dr. Gaul, Coriolanus Snow entered the Arena and get Sejanus out of the Arena without alerting the Tributes. Coriolanus entered, and as he and Sejanus attempted to drag Marcus' body with them Bobbin of District 8, Coral and Mizzen of District 4 and Tanner from District 10 appeared. Grabbing a wooden plank, Coriolanus bashed Bobbin over the head. By the time Bobbin was dead, he was barely recognisable as a Tribute

13th: Bobbin Gibson, District 8. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by Corolanus Snow

The events surrounding the death of Bobbin was a mystery for several decades, and the commentators during the following morning's coverage of the 10th Hunger Games was more interested in the fact Marcus' body had been moved. Juno Phipps, Bobbin's Mentor, demanded that she sees the tape as she suspected that her Tribute's death was suspicious, however, the tape would be discovered long after her death. Most notably, Bobbin would be the first Tribute Corolanus Snow would personally kill, but not the last; that honour went to Titus Mitchell fifty-five years later. That afternoon, Mizzen, Coral and Tanner, who formed an inter-District Alliance, spotted Sol, the District 5 Female, and started chasing her. Coral, armed with her Trident, hurled the weapon through Sol's throat, killing her

12th: Sol Benson, District 5. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by Coral

Shortly after, Lucy Grey Baird was chased out of the tunnel by her District Partner, Jessup Diggs. Lysistrata Vickers, Jessup's Mentor, sent numerous water bottles to Lucy Grey. As soon as he saw the bottles, Jessup went into a frenzy, which resulted in him breaking his bones. Lucy went over and comforted her District Partner, telling him to sleep and staying with him until he died, an action District 12 Tributes and Victors would repeat over the years.

11th: Jessup Diggs, District 12. Tenth Hunger Games. Complications of Rabies and injuries from fall

Day 3 of the Games saw Lamina of District 7 forming a mini alliance with Reaper of District 11, with Reaper giving Lamina pieces of the Panemian flag in exchange for some food. However, Tanner and the District 4 Tributes was nearby, and Lamina told Reaper to flee. Reaper did so, running to the barricades. Armed with a sword, Tanner struck Lamina's beam, alerting the District 7 girl of the alliance. The three Tributes hatched a plan; Tanner was to remain at the bottom while the District 4 Tributes would ambush her at the top. Lamina swung her axe towards Coral, but the District 4 girl slipped away. Frustrated, Lamina swung her axe at Mizzen, injuring the thirteen-year-old's knee. Mizzen managed to catch himself on the pole, as Coral climbed back up. Reaching the top, she yelled out a war cry and armed with her trident, plunged it into Lamina's abdomen. This caused the girl to fall to the ground.

10th: Lamina Boehm, District 7. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by Tanner, Mizzen and Coral

As Coral helped Mizzen with his knee, Tanner did a victory dance over Lamina's corpse. In the midst of a victory slap, Coral plunged her trident into Tanner's back while Mizzen slashed his neck.

9th: Tanner Brutscheidt, District 10. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by Coral and Mizzen

It was late afternoon before anything of note took place. Reaper Ash, having had a nap, went over to where Lamina and Tanner's bodies lay, and moved them to where Marcus and Bobbin was. He spent the next hour moving the deceased Tribute's bodies, bar Jessup, to his makeshift morgue. Covering up the bodies with the Panemian flag, his actions angered the Capitol. Using a piece of the flag to make himself a cape, Reaper felt inspired to pay tribute to the fallen.

Day 4 of the 10th Hunger Games opened with Wovey, who had barely been seen by anyone since the start of the Games, emerging from the tunnels mid morning. She was holding an empty water bottle. Unbeknownst to anyone, Lucy Grey Baird had put poison into the water. Taking a few sips of water from the sponsors, Wovey fell still, silver droplets trailing from her mouth

8th: Wovey Sanchez, District 8. Tenth Hunger Games. Poisoned by Lucy Grey Baird.

Late afternoon saw the release in the Arena, of the first muttations used in any Hunger Games: the snake mutts. The mutts were released into the Arena as retaliation for the death of Gaius Breen, the Mentor for Panlo Schafer, who had passed away from injuries from the bombing that killed his Tribute that morning. To punish the Districts, the snakes was parachuted in. Immediately, Treech climbed up the bleachers. When the District 3 Tributes finally noticed the mutts, Teslee legged it as the snakes swarmed over Circ. Within ten seconds of the snakes swarming him the District 3 boy died

7th: Circ Abold, District 3. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by snake mutts

Teslee cried as she clinged onto a pole. Shortly after, Mizzen ran out of the tunnel, followed by Coral. A snake had grabbed onto her arm and as she dropped the snake, numerous snakes attacked her. She was dead as fast as the snakes attacked her

6th: Coral Lansing, District 4. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by snake mutts.

Mizzen flung his trident before he climbed onto the pole, opposite Teslee. Teslee screamed for Mizzen's help as her grip began to loosen, but Mizzen can only shook his head. As the snakes was about to target Teslee, Lucy Grey Baird emerged from her hiding place, singing. The snake mutts flocked to Lucy, giving the District 3 girl the escape she needed. As she continued singing, the snakes wove around her. By the time Lucy finished her song, the snake muttations became docile. A storm then rolled in, the female Tributes seeking shelter, the male Tributes becoming drenched. The storm killed the snakes. Decades later, it was revealed by a descendant of Clemensia Dovecoat that Corolanus Snow dropped a hankerchief containing Lucy Grey Baird's scent into the Snake Tank, ensuring that the snakes wouldn't attack her.

Day 5 saw the last of the clouds roll away, leaving puddles of water and the last five Tributes alive. Reaper Ash drank from one of the puddles while Treech ate. Only Lucy Grey knew that Reaper was affected by rabies he contracted from Jessup. Mizzen mimed eating to receive gifts from the sponsors, and Teslee emerged a minute later. Using the drones she and Circ hacked, she walked to the pole where Mizzen was, and launched the swarm. Confused at first, Mizzen assumed it was another sponsor delivery. More drones then appeared, with the drones injuring Mizzen's eye. Attempting to escape, he leaned towards the pole Teslee held onto during the snake mutts' attack, however, his knee was still injured and he lost his balance, falling to the ground.

5th: Mizzen Dillon, District 4. Tenth Hunger Games. Fall as a result from fleeing hacked drones

While Mizzen was being attacked by the drones, Treech had climbed down from the scoreboard in an attempt to kill Teslee. No sooner than Mizzen hit the ground than Treech brought his axe down onto Teslee's skull. The force of the axe was enough to kill her.

4th: Teslee Fontana, District 3. Tenth Hunger Games. Killed by Treech

This left three Tributes left: Treech from District 7, Reaper from District 11 and Lucy Grey Baird from District 12. Lucy emerged just before noon and poisoned a puddle with rat poison. Spotting Reaper Ash, she decided to go in the opposite direction. Treech attempted to ambush Lucy Grey, however, Lucy Grey ran away. As Treech attempted to swing his axe into Lucy Grey, she grabbed onto him, surprising him before pulling out a snake muttation. The snake bit Treech in the neck, killing him, but not before Treech killed the snake.

3rd: Treech Berrecloth, District 7. Tenth Hunger Games. Bitten by snake mutt

Lucy attempted to drag Treech's body to Reaper's morgue, but Reaper told her to drop the body. Reaper then moved Treech's body to where those that died in the Arena lay. As he did so, Lucy was able to take advantage that Reaper hadn't eaten for many days, and she went over to the morgue, took the pieces of the flag off the corpses and ran. Reaper sprinted after her, insisting that she put the fabric back on the corpses. On the brink of exhaustion, Reaper drank out of one of a few puddles left, the one Lucy had poisoned. On the brink, Reaper staggered back to the morgue and had made it to the body of Treech before collapsing. Thirty minutes later, Lucy Grey went over to the morgue and over to where Reaper lay. After finding no pulse, Lucy closed his eyes.

2nd: Reaper Ash, District 11. Tenth Hunger Games. Poisoned by Lucy Grey

1st: Lucy Grey Baird, District 12. Tenth Hunger Games. VICTOR

Lucy can only look around the place.

Aftermath:

Lucy returned to District 12, who were relieved they have finally got a Victor. Shortly after Sejanus Plinth's execution, Lucy Grey disappeared. For many decades there have been speculation on what happened to Lucy, and to this day the mystery still remains unanswered. Did Lucy, like many Victors before her, fade into obscurity? Or is she dead? It is known that by the Second Quarter Quell, Lucy Grey Baird would become forgotten. The 10th Hunger Games was seen by Dr. Gaul as a failure, and she ordered all copies bar the master tape, of the 10th Hunger Games, to be destroyed. Copies of the first nine Games was also destroyed at the same time, whether it is to do with acts of rebellion (The Fifth Hunger Games), controversial events in the Games (The Fourth Hunger Games) or because the Games wasn't satisfactory for Dr. Gaul (The First, Second, Third, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Hunger Games). Because of this, only those alive to witness the Games that took place in the City Arena can tell you the names of the Tributes that participated in those Games and who won. Until recently, it was hard to say what happened in the first ten Games or who won the Games. These Games had became so obscure that only those that followed the Hunger Games right from the beginning can tell you what happened. Curators at the Panem Museum are attempting to piece together the story of the City Arena and the Tributes that participated in those Games. The City Arena became disused following the 10th Hunger Games, and it was destroyed after the Second Rebellion, becoming the second Arena to be destroyed after the Arena used for the 29th Hunger Games. The statistics of the City Arena is posted below. These Games also marked the beginnings of the Hunger Games as we know it. Total number of Tributes killed before the start of the Games: 38

Total number of Tributes killed within the City Arena during the Games: 202

With 202 total deaths during the Games held within it's walls, the City Arena held the record for "Most Tributes killed within a single Arena"

The 10th Hunger Games would be the last Games held in the City Arena, with Reaper Ash becoming the last Tribute to die within the Arena. From the 11th Games onwards, the Hunger Games would be held in specially constructed Arenas.

The Capitol in the first decade:

For the first decade of the Hunger Games, Capitol audiences didn't care about the Tributes from the Districts, and there was outright discrimination of District-born Capitolites. Several "Capitol Families", such as the Snow Family, was in dire situations to the point Tigris Snow, who would later become a Hunger Games Stylist, was even selling herself and working as a slave to Fabrica Whatnot, a designer who resided in the Capitol. Moreover, the Games didn't become the cultural institution in the Capitol until the following decade, however, with the 10th Hunger Games, several that that would be common in future Games would become introduced. The Mentoring System, Pre-Games Interviews, Sponsorships and Muttations would all appear in the 10th Hunger Games. Things like the Victory Tour, Victor's Village, Specially designed Arenas, Chariot Rides, Tribute Scores and Betting wouldn't be introduced until the following decade, as well as the weapons pile becoming a cornucopia. The Victory Tour, Victor's Village and specially designed Arenas would be introduced in time for the 11th Hunger Games, while the Chariot Rides, Tribute Scores and the Betting would be introduced towards the end of the following decade. Most Capitolites wore fashion that wouldn't look out of place from the pre-Dark Days era of the 1930's. So all in all, like the Games themselves in the years following the First Rebellion, the Capitol was very spartan both in architecture and the fashion. Coriolanus Snow would in the next decade, be at the forefront of the development of the Hunger Games into the spectacle it would become by the time of the 74th Hunger Games. By the end of the first Hunger Games decade, only Districts 4, 5 and 7 remained victorless. The era of the 1st-10th Hunger Games would later become known as "The Spartan Era" in reference to how primitive the Games were.

*District has more than one Victor.

I wrote this chapter months ago, but I wasn't sure of the order of deaths. From the first trailer of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie, we can imply that the order of deaths will be different in the film than the book. I will add a bit about Panemian society at the end of each decade, so it's also a history book as well. The next decade will see some things be gradually introduced, as it was the decade that Snow was a Gamemaker, so expect to see brief scenes of Gamemaker Snow in the following chapters. We'll see Mags and Woof's Games, as well as seeing Districts 5 and 7 get their first Victor, while Districts 1, 6, 8 and 11 will gain a second Victor; if I can sum up the second Decade of the Games it would be "District 1 Supremacy", with two Victors, the second being the first Victor born after the Hunger Games started. Though there will be a five year period in which every single Victor is male. The next completed chapter is Mags' Chapter.
