CHAPTER 1
There are more than one prison
A text conversation:
-«Don't do this»
-«Well hello to you too brother, long time no talked»
-«Don't be smug and just let go of whatever you have in head. Don't. Do. This!»
-«I have no idea what you're talking about»
-«I won't play that game with you Damon. Back off now!»
-«Someone is being way too territorial here.»
-«Your rules don't apply to me anymore»
-«Good thing it's not about you then»
-«It IS about me, you'd do anything to get to me»
-«Maybe it is, maybe it isn't»
The victory dinner turned into a fight when Elena showed the note to Stefan. The man suddenly turned mad for no reason and threatened to tear the check into pieces then begged her to do it herself. He claimed it was blood money, that she couldn't accept it, that she was going to be dragged into MC shit and when she tried to make him understand it was just what Damon had promised he dismissed her point and his words started to make no sense. She understood he had been through a lot - even though she never really had the details - and that everything had come back in his head when she had accepted to work on Damon's case but this was too over the top a reaction to all this. But he repeated over and over she didn't understand without offering any explanation. Understand what? He was running in circles being as vague as he could be and she ran out of patience. She left him there and got in the first cab she found before he could run after her. She wished she could have had a real conversation with Stefan but he was on edge, nothing good would come out of this, not now, today or maybe tomorrow.
Still there was this check and what she got from that non conversation with Stefan was he was worried it was sort of a bribe from the MC. Were they trying to buy themselves a new lawyer? If they were she'd have to let them know she wasn't for sale.
But maybe it was really just a bonus.
To avoid any problem she decided not to cash the money in.
Martin congratulated her when she arrived at the office the next day. He had been supportive before, he was happy now, his student was slowly but surely spreading her wings and he was thinking of giving her more responsibilities on cases he was working on. It wasn't becoming a partner but it was a big step for her and she was on top of the world when she got in her office. A bunch of lilies was waiting for her on her desk and she frowned, had Stefan sent them as an apology for losing his temper the night before? She picked the flowers up and searched for a card but there was none so she got out of her office to ask Nancy, Martin's secretary, if she had seen who had brought them but she didn't know. She wasn't going to make a fuss about it asking around so she just put the flowers in a vase and started working on the case Martin had given her.
She worked late that day because she didn't want to bring work home for the weekend but with the two short night in a row she had had she was on the verge of falling asleep on her desk so she stirred and decided it was time to go home. Bath, PJs and TV until she passed out was what she longed for. She gathered her things and turned the lights off, she was the last one standing it seemed, she often worked late, she was used to it so she closed all the doors and got out of the building. Her car was parked one block away and she headed that way, night had fallen already and the street wasn't busy at all so when she picked up her phone to check on Stefan - she couldn't stay mad at him and maybe he'd explain clearly what had gone through his head the night before - she didn't see someone was following her. It's only when someone grabbed her arm and pushed her against the wall that she realized she was assaulted, her phone fell off her hands and the man - for it was one - tried to get her satchel but it was a cross body bag and he only managed to shook Elena and her back hit the wall again, so did her head.
What followed happened so fast she didn't really see things clearly. The man got pulled back with force and since he still had his hands on her bag she got pulled too but the man abruptly let go so she lost balance and fell on the pavement. Next the thief got pushed hard against the concrete and got punched several times in the face and stomach. She only managed to see eyes as blue as blue eyes could be and heard her name before she passed out.
She woke up in her bed and the light going through the curtains, though dim, hurt her eyes, her head was resting on several pillows and she winced when she tried to move. The back of her skull was hurting and she had a massive headache. Was she hangover? She had no recollections of drinking last night… no she had left work and… of shit! She sat straight and looked around then cursed for her brain made her pay for that sudden movement.
-«I wouldn't move if I were you» A voice said from the corner of the room and Elena almost screamed in surprise then the pain made her head spin. The man who had been sitting on a chair got on his feet and walked closer to the bed and Elena focussed on him until she managed to see who it was.
-«Damon? W… what the…? What…? How?» She obviously couldn't ache and articulate a sentence at the same time, so long for multitasking.
-«Your skull isn't broken. I should have tried to keep you awake in case you had a concussion but you didn't really leave me a choice on that matter. You passed out. I checked your eyes, you seemed fine enough to be brought back home.»
-«There was… a man…» She mumbled
-«He's been… dealt with»
Elena blinked a few times «What do you mean «dealt with»?»
-«Relax, he's alive.»
Relax? Alive? What? If that man had to be somewhere it was more than probably at the hospital, considering the sound his jaw made when he got punched.
-«As if this will make me feel better. You've… crushed his head on the pavement. I… remember that.»
-«What do you want first? Coffee or aspirin?» Damon obviously didn't want to talk about it.
-«I rather know if you killed someone last night.»
-«Coffee then.»
-«NO!» She grunted as her head felt like it was about to explode but she kept talking because she was stubborn and, well, scared «I want answers, I want to know where's the man, how you knew where I live and why you brought me home instead of the hospital. I want to know why you happened to be there at the right time and why you're still here.»
Damon paused at the threshold of the door and turned to face Elena.
-« I just wanted to know if you liked my flowers but when I saw you were assaulted I intervened, You hit your head against the wall so I decided you'd be better home, your address was on your passport in your bag. And when we got in your car I saw you leave the tribunal with yesterday, which you parked way too far from where you work, by the way, I called an ambulance so they could scrap the pavement and do whatever they needed to do with the thief who hurt you. For some obvious reasons I didn't want to be there when they'd arrive. Now will you have coffee or not?»
And it's when Elena's phone went off. She looked at the bedside table where it was, he had obviously retrieved it for her and the screen was broken but, it still worked it seemed. Great timing Stefan, perfect… She sighed and took the call.
-«Stefan, hey» She tried to speak in a normal voice taming the headache and leaning her back against the bedhead. She couldn't ignore Damon was staring but she had no reason not to answer. Eventually he turned his back to her and left the room. She could lie all she wanted now because it was exactly what she was going to do starting with answering she was fine when he asked how she was. They had a lot to talk about but now wasn't the best of time for obvious reasons and when he offered to come by with brunch she had to turn him down and postpone to the next day. She was saying her goodbyes when Damon came back with two mugs of coffee, he put one on the bedsides table and sat on the bed's edge to drink his own. Call it an invasion. She hang up the phone and looked at the elder Salvatore a small frown on her face.
-«Oh but please make yourself comfortable» This was clearly sarcasm, she had no idea how to deal with the man who, yes, had saved her but also punched a man hard enough for him not to be able to talk for months. And to her sarcasm Damon answered by moving to sit on the bed next to her and laying his back on the bedhead as well. She was stubborn, he was worst.
-«I thought you'd never offer, I almost broke my back spending the night on this chair in the corner.»
-«It wasn't an offer!» But he knew that didn't he? «Listen I thank you for what you've done though I don't appreciate your method but you're clearly overstaying your welcome now.»
-«Harsh» He faked being offended but took a sip of his coffee. Elena clenched her jaws, he was a player, of course. She slowly turned her aching head to look at him. Even with the dim light in the room, the sun managed to hit those impossible blue eyes he had. His raven hair and brows complimented them and that perfect nose, sharp jawline and sort of pinkish cheeks were the definition of beauty, no wonder he wasn't used to women saying no to him and she would bet a lot on the fact he had had his share of them in his bed. Bad guy, MC, good looks, perfect combo wasn't it? But really, if he thought she'd fall for something like that he was clearly wrong.
-«Let's get things straight now so there won't be any misunderstanding between us. I've defended you because I wanted to help Stefan and it was an interesting work opportunity for me. It went well. Period. I'm not your lawyer anymore and I'm not on the market either so you better leave things at that. As for your flowers, I've received them, they're beautiful but instead of waiting for me out of my office like a creep you could just have left a card. I would or wouldn't have sent a message to thank you and it would have been my for that guy, I'd be phone-less and bagless but that man would still have his thank you for the gesture, it was, I guess, nice of you to care enough to help, but I'm not supportive of violence, something you're very familiar with obviously» And she hadn't rehearsed at all, it all came out, just like that.
-«Are you finished?» He just answered now looking at her.
-«I don't think there's much left to say»
He finished his coffee and put the mug on the beside table 'his sideof the bed' then he turned again to her and leaned to kiss her cheek.
-«Make sure you see a doctor today» He simply said before getting on his feet and picking up his jacket he had left on the chair in the corner of the room then, he left.
What had just happened? Elena blinked a few times when she heard her apartment door close then she shook off the thought and tried to get on her feet, the headache came back and she decided she definitely would go see a doctor.
The doctor confirmed Damon's diagnostic, no concussion but a big fat bump on the back of her head. She needed nothing more than a mild painkiller and rest so she went home and just took a bit of 'her time' with a long bath then PJs and TV as she had planned to do the night before. She fell asleep on the sofa and dragged herself in bed around 2am.
And the next day she went to the nice little restaurant Stefan and her often went to for brunch on weekends, meeting him there she sat at a table and relaxed on her chair. What would he say exactly? They still hadn't sorted things out and, really she didn't want to argue with him, things had been weird and tiring enough the past two days she wouldn't take more of this.
-«Ok I'll start» Stefan said aware that there had been an awkward silence between them for the past five minutes «I'm sorry, really sorry for the other night. I've been way too on edge with… everything and I unleashed my anger on you, it was completely unfair now hit me I deserve it»
-«Well, actually I was planning on giving you a lecture but I'll pass. I just want everything to go back to normal so… apologies accepted, fight is over and I'm starving»
-«Ok» Stefan shook his head and smiled, Elena had quite a temper at times, to say the least, and if she was ready to let go of this he wouldn't argue «Good enough for me and I must say I'm starving too and I'd more than gladly have a drink, I know it's early but still, wine? Mimosa? Something?»
-«No alcohol for me today» Not wise with the painkiller, juice would have to do.
-«Someone had too much to drink last night?»
-«Someone fell and hit their head hard, don't worry it's nothing just won't mix medications and booze.» She didn't have to say everything but since she still had a mild headache and probably would go home early she had to twist the truth a bit. Bringing a now probably badly damaged thief and Damon in the conversation would do them no good and really, all this was over so, no need, really. But Stefan frowned and she elaborated a bit «Wet floor, bathtub, tired me. Don't look at me like that, like I said it's nothing.» And Stefan didn't bring the topic back and they managed to have a nice lunch, between friends.
And back on track she was. Incident closed.
Damon was sitting on a chair, feet on a table, at the back of the bar in the club, he was deep in thoughts and some would say he was brooding, and some would have had their tongues cut for not minding their own business. Hell knew the man was impulsive and people here weren't dumb enough to make a joke on him when he looked the way he was now.
-«Damon, suit up, we're leaving» A tall bald guy with tattoos on the side of his neck and head said leaving immediately after he delivered the message. Damon looked at the clock, yeah, they had to go, deal to run, big stuff, so he joined the bald guy, Aaron, a few others and his father outside and they all got on their bikes. A herd of men wearing their colors on the back of their leather jacked - a raven with a bloody beak- and patches on their shoulders and chest, men no one dared to stop, not even Mystic Falls' sheriff who they paid well enough to keep her mouth shut and their names as clean as possible. And the town was still cute and homey for everyone. And it was theirs.
Nothing made Damon more happy than ridding his bike. He had been born and raised that way, wild and free but also bound to his MC. What Stefan had turned his back to Damon had embraced. Though he wasn't dumb he never went further than graduating high school, and even before that he had been already enrolled in his father's business. Some called it nasty, he called it work. The Ravens were smugglers, weapons mostly but they had some other businesses here and there. He himself had a hand in car deals and one day he'd take the decisions for everything, but for now he was the vice-president. Well earned title for Damon had never been daddy's favorite and he had worked hard to earn his patches, hell knew he had blood on his hands more than anyone his age in the MC. Being a Salvatore could be a heavy burden but he carried it without flinching and at 32 years old he was feared and respected. There weren't many things missing in his life, except maybe for one thing.
They reached their destination and dismounted, they weren't on their territory anymore but the place belonged to a friend of the MC so basically they were safe, it didn't mean they didn't check, in their line of work you better have a pair of eyes on the back of your head.
They were in the middle of the trade when Damon's phone buzzed in his pocket, he pulled it out and looked suddenly furious.
-«We've been sold, Everybody out, feds are on their way»
And in a flash buyers and sellers were rushing to the door of the building, the Ravens got on their bikes and the others in their SUVs. All the bikers couldn't hit the road together and they had escaped routes planned, they always did. Giuseppe left with two guys, Troy, an elder and his son Rory, Aaron went with Santos and his brother and Damon with another elder, Rick and Matt the youngest of them all, that way, even if anything happened to one of the groups the MC wound't be completely crippled. They all got rid of their disposable phones on the road.
Giuseppe's group reached the headquarter first and Damons a hour-ish later but after the adrenalin rush the escape had raised in him, he sobered up and looked around.
-«Where's Aaron?» he asked but the guys, those who had been at the deal and those who had stayed looked down or sighed.
-«They didn't make it, the feds got them» Giuseppe answered and Damon held his father's gaze for a moment before grabbing a chair he threw against the wall. Aaron had been his closest friend since… always… and saying he didn't take the news mildly was an understatement.
Behind a closed door:
-«I don't like that» Giuseppe said giving a hard look at his elder son.
-«I'm not surprised you don't like it but it's the way it is and I made myself pretty clear.»
-«Yeah, quite a show you made in court but I thought you wanted to piss me off like the ass you are most of the timenot that you were serious.»
-«I'd never break the code for a joke and you know it» Giuseppe grunted at his son's answer. Yeah, he was bloody serious, he could see it in his eyes. Damn brat had his mother's eyes and the MC president hated that. He had her heart too but Damon would never admit it. This was his weakness.
-«So you're gonna drag the dove in our shit? She's a rookie, tender meat she doesn't have the stomach for it and we have no leverage on her.»
-« We have everything we need » He pulled a few picture out of his pocket and pushed them on the table for his father to see. Giuseppe clenched his teeth when he looked down at them, one in particular. Damon might have his mother's heart but his father had a massive soft spot, no matter what he said, how much he denied it, it was still there and his elder son was going to exploit it.
