The Waverider was floating in the Temporal Zone while everyone was gathered together for a meeting Ray called together.
"What makes a hero? Is it powers? Strength? Bravery? No." Ray bgan his speech. "A hero is forged by his or her relationships. Our bonds of brotherhood or sisterhood.
That is why I'm taking you all through the ten-step team-building process I perfected at Palmer Tech. Step one, part one: icebreakers."
"Buddy, we've been stuck on a ship that has one bathroom." Peter reminded his friend. "I think we know each other well enough."
"Yeah, we've really gotta fix that bathroom situation," Felicia commented.
"Should have asked for some renovations when those guys at S.H.I.E.L.D. redecorated for you." Lane chuckled. "I mean, most of the universe got rewritten, yet it was too much to ask for an extra bathroom?"
"We need to grow as a team," Ray told them. "The first step is two truths and a lie. It's gonna be fun."
"Lie," Mick stated.
"I haven't started yet," Ray replied. "Look I know you guys probably think - this is lame..."
"Truth," Sara called.
"But we have a new crew member, and it is important for Zari to bond with us, not only as team members but as individuals," Ray said.
"Yeah, well, I'm no hero, and I'm not a member of any team," Zari commented as she looked around. "Besides, I've already have you all figured out. The pirate guy seems to be at home on this ship." Lane shrugged. "These two have some will-they-won't-they thing going on." She said, gesturing to Felicia and Peter. "Rory's been drunk since breakfast. And your ship's still mad at me for doing a teeny hack on her subsystems. Now, what's this about one bathroom?"
Everyone then broke off into arguments between one another, considering that she did basically figure them all out.
"Oy vey." Sara sighed.
"Guys, guys." Ray tried to get them to quiet down so they could continue.
"You're right, Haircut, this is gonna be fun," Mick said as he took another drink.
"Let's just skip to step two: trust falls," Ray said, getting a few moans and groans from the group. "Now, to demonstrate, Mick, who hated me when we first met, will fall trustingly into my arms."
Mick sighed as he reluctantly decided to do this as he walked over. "All right, you promised me good coin for doing this."
"And you said you weren't gonna say that out loud." Ray reminded him. "Well, just lean back and let go 'cause I'm not going anywhere, buddy."
Mick began to do the trustfall, but just as he started to fall backward, Ray vanished out of thin air. Everyone jumped in shock when they saw he vanished.
"What the hell?"
"Gideon, what happened to Ray?"
"According to public record, Mr. Palmer died in 1988," Gideon said, shocking everyone.
"Wait, Ray's dead?" Felicia asked in surprise.
Mick groaned as he got back up and rubbed his head. "He better be."
"How could Ray be dead? He was just right here." Lane asked in confusion.
"Yeah, well, he owes me money," Mick stated.
"Gideon, you said Ray died in 1988," Peter replied.
Gideon showed them some news reports to show that Ray died as a child. "Mr. Palmer went missing on October 31, 1988. They recovered the body two days later."
"He was found in the woods, dead, only eight years old," Amaya said in shock.
"If Ray disappeared on Halloween, then we'll just go back to before whatever happens happens," Sara said as they rushed to their seats. "Gideon, get us to October 30, 1988."
"Wait." Zari was getting giddy. "Are we time traveling?"
"You better buckle up," Peter said with a smile as they buckled in.
The Waverider flew through the Temperal Zone and then blasted off into the timeline.
1988
"Arriving in 1988."
Zari was shocked as she tried to speak but ended up speaking in French.
"I should have said there are some really strange side effects," Amaya told her.
That was when Ray suddenly reappeared like nothing happened; he was even in the same stance. Trying to catch Mick, who was already sitting.
"Buddy! Hey, you're alive." Lane was happy to see as he walked over and even touched Ray's shoulder. "Yeah, you're alive."
Ray was confused when he looked over and saw the paper. "I'm in the paper." He was surprised as he walked over and looked over the reports. "And I'm dead?"
"Not yet," Sara said. "We're in 1988, the day before you disappeared."
"Okay." Ray shrugged. "Well, I guess the fact that I'm still here means temporal permanence hasn't set in. Which means we can still save my life... And enjoy 1988 while we're at it."
Peter chuckled and rolled his eyes. "Trust Ray to find the bright side of dying."
Everyone started to get dressed to fit into the time period they were in.
"Uh, are you sure this is right?" Zari questioned as she looked over herself, wearing a scarf around her neck.
"That sweater's totally awesome," Ray said with a smile.
"How do I look?" Zari asked Lane.
"Honestly? Like you're being strangled by a dyed Wookie," Lane commented as he fixed his jacket.
"Can't believe people used to wear this stuff," Zari commented.
"Hey, speak for yourself," Peter said, exiting with a more common Spider-Man attire underneath more common-looking attire. "I look good in any era as Spider-Man."
"I can't wait to show you guys my home," Ray said. "First, we have to go to Pizza Master. It's the best slice in town. Then we have to go to Video Village. I can't tell you how much of my allowance I spent there."
"So you're always this positive, even when you're dead? How can you pretend like everything's okay?" Zari asks him.
"I'm not pretending," Ray said. "I believe it. I found that if I can trust in myself, I can believe everything's okay, and it usually is. It's called positive thinking. Give it a shot."
"Is he for real?" Zari asks everyone.
"Sadly, yes," Lane said with a sigh.
"School's almost out," Felicia called as she walked in, wearing common attire with her hair flowing over a shoulder. "You ready, kids?"
"Yeah, let's motor," Ray said with glee.
Lane, Ray, and Zari were watching outside of the school as they were waiting for Ray's younger counterpart to come out.
"Mm, this is amazing! Blue skies, smiling kids, an actual white picket fence." Zari commented, looking around in amazement.
"Well, I think it's actually a trellis, but yeah, same thing." Ray shrugged. "Oh." He spotted his younger self. "Wow, there I am."
"Thanks for the pop quiz, Mrs. Garvin. It really reinforced some fundamentals." Young Ray said.
"Yeah, that's definitely you, Ray." Lane scoffed as he rolled his eyes.
"Okay, now, whoever's targeting me could be anywhere, so keep a lookout for anything unusual," Ray told them. "Guys, here I come. I mean, little me. He's coming at you. Catch up with me on Main Street, and, um, keep me alive."
"I've got eyes on Ray to make a move," Peter said, swinging and landing on some small houses.
Felicia was sitting on one of the desks and saw Ray go away from his house. "Well, it looks like you're taking a detour. Did you visit the Ivy Town Newsstand as a boy?"
"Yeah, I must be picking up the new issue of Scientific American." Ray guessed.
"I was more of a 'National Geographic' boy myself," Lane admitted, getting confused looks from everyone. "What? Crisis rewrote my life, remember?"
"Once a geek, always a geek." Mick scoffed.
"Well, whoever's after me could be there, so..." Ray said.
"Yeah, we'll stick on him," Felicia said as she stood up.
"Okay, I got somebody checking out magazines and one shopkeeper," Lane commented.
"I could knock this place off with a water pistol." Mick scoffed.
"Okay, new mission: keep me away from Mick," Ray warned them. "I don't want today to be the day I descend into a life of crime."
Felicia got a closer look and was surprised when she watched Ray stuff his bag full of candy the second that the store owner wasn't looking. "Well, boyscout, looks like it's too late."
"Wait, what does that mean?" Ray asks.
"You're by the candy bars," Lane commented.
"Well, get me away from there. That stuff's poison." Ray stated.
"Yeah, that's not all," Felicia said.
"Wait, what does that mean?" Ray questioned.
"You're shoplifting." Peter was shocked to see.
"Wait. What?" Ray was shocked to hear.
"Damn, Haircut," Mick commented with a proud grin. "You had balls."
"I've never stolen a thing in my life." Ray defended.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Mick scoffed, seeing that young Ray noticed him, but Mick didn't say anything. "Well, you have now. I'm proud of you."
Felicia watched as young Ray left and made his way home. "Little you's on the move."
"Well, stop him. Me. Stop both of us." Ray cried.
"I'm no rat," Mick stated, stealing some candy of his own.
Nate was polishing a neighbor's car near Ray's childhood home. "Ready at the home front." He then looked down at the Delorian and sighed. "See, now this? This is a time machine." That was when young Ray made his way to the neighborhood. "I got eyes on little Ray." Then he saw something approach. "We got hostile incoming."
"What is it? Assassin? Time Bureau?"
"Almost as bad." Nate sighed as Ray rushed to his side, watching as two kids on bikes made their way towards Ray. "Bullies."
"Hey, Palmer, let's play." They heard as they watched a guy take Ray's bag and start to toss it around.
"No, it's just Gus and Ty," Ray said. "We were friends."
"Very funny, guys." Young Ray said, trying to get his bag.
"Do you want me to rough them up?" Nate offered.
"Nah, nah, nah, it's, uh... They were just kidding." Ray said, watching them torment his younger self.
"Give that back. Come on."
"Beginning to think maybe they weren't kidding." Ray realized.
"This is boring."
"Let's go, Ty."
They then gave Ray back his bag and then left on their bikes.
"I can't believe he actually thinks we're friends."
"Bye, guys!" Young Ray called.
"I guess kids are mean in any time period," Zari commented.
That was when they heard a radio, getting them to look and see that the girls were in a vehicle as they rolled up to them. "We circled the neighborhood, checked the yard." Amaya said. "It seems normal."
"Scary normal," Sara commented.
"Maybe young Ray died of boredom," Felicia commented. "I know I would have."
"No, something's up," Ray stated. "Something's wrong. Look, maybe it was the candy. Maybe I overdosed on high-fructose corn syrup and food coloring."
"Or maybe your killer aborted when we showed up." Sara shrugged. "Let's get back to the ship and check the historical record."
"Give me a minute," Ray said, making his way over to his house.
Lane shrugged and followed. "Meet you at the Waverider."
They made their way over to the window and watched as Young Ray walked over to his bed and dropped the candy. "Dinnertime. Got you gummy bears, licorice, Nougat nummies." Then they watched as something reached out and grabbed a bar, dragging it underneath the bed. "Wait till we go trick-or-treating tomorrow. There's a whole lot more where that came from."
"Huh." Lane was a little confused. "Ray is talking to someone in his room."
That was when the wrapper to the candy was flung out. "Knew you were hungry." Young Ray said. "The coast is clear, Gumball. You can come on out."
That was when some strange creature crawled out from under the bed that looked like a strange baby alien. Ray was disturbed and confused but Lane was horrified as he recognized what it was.
"Guys. I think I know what kills me." Ray said in terror. "It's an alien."
"Worse," Lane whispered in terror. "It's a Zygon."
Lane showed them footage of the Zygons from his world from the likes of S.H.I.E.L.D., Torchwood, and UNIT. They saw various footage of Zygons attacking and terrorizing his planet.
"So aliens are real," Zari commented in surprise.
"Yep, and those ones are called Zygons," Lane stated. "They're nasty too. Capable of shapeshifting, advanced technology, and, the fun one, capable of copying your memories."
"Great." Sara sighed.
"The last time my world faced them, they almost brought World War Zygon," Lane said.
"And now little me kidnapped one and is treating it like a house pet, which would be cool if it wasn't deadly," Ray said.
"Maybe the baby Zygon hasn't developed all of its abilities yet," Amaya commented.
"The infant of the species has the strength of the adult with none of its discretion," Gideon said, showing the files the footage came with. "It is incapable of shapeshifting into any subject at will."
"How can you not remember befriending an alien?" Felicia asked Ray.
"Because I didn't." Ray defended. "It never happened to me."
"The Zygon is an anachronism," Lane stated. "These creatures should only exist in my world. It's universal-displaced."
"Think Weirdmageddon has something to do with it?" Peter asks, the idea of Weirdmageddon still fresh on everyone's mind. "Like maybe a tear in reality?"
"Well, where there are Zygons, there is likely..." Lane murmured, his voice trailing off as the eerie whirring of machinery echoed in the air. He glanced around, a sense of anticipation gripping him. "... a blue box."
"What is that?" Zari inquired, brow furrowing in curiosity.
"A friend," Lane declared, an urgent spark igniting in his eyes. He hurriedly exited the Waverider and felt the cool rush of the evening breeze as he stepped outside. Before him stood a magnificent blue telephone box, flickering in and out of existence like a beacon from another time and space. "Doctor."
With a determined stride, he approached the door and rapped his knuckles against the sturdy wood. "Hello, old girl," he greeted affectionately, his heart racing with nostalgia.
In a split second, the doorway swung open, revealing the Doctor. Clad in a striking new black coat, yet still sporting his signature white shirt, fitted black trousers, and that ever-quirky bow tie, he looked both familiar and changed. "Can't right now. Busy," the Doctor said curtly before quickly shutting the door, leaving Lane momentarily stunned.
With furrowed brows, Lane turned back to the group trailing behind him, puzzled. "Doctor?"
Just when confusion began to take root, the door creaked open once more. The Doctor's eyes widened in recognition, the corners of his mouth lifting in a grin. "Lane? Lane Evans?"
"Doctor," Lane chuckled, relief washing over him.
"Oh, look at you!" The Doctor exclaimed, wrapping Lane in a hearty embrace. "It's been far too long, hasn't it?"
"And yet you're still wearing that bow tie," Lane teased, playfully poking at the fabric with a grin.
"Of course I am; bow ties are cool!" the Doctor laughed, straightening the knot with an air of pride, the gleam in his eyes telling Lane that some things, like their friendship, stood the test of time.
Lane rolled his eyes. "So, how did you get here?"
"Well, I was chasing down this Zygon ship," the Doctor explained as he walked away from the TARDIS for a moment, giving Zari a chance to peek inside. "A pod blasted off, so I followed that, and it fell through this rift of sorts."
"Uh... guys?" Zari called as she was shocked at what she saw. "This thing is..."
"Bigger on the inside," Sara called. "We know. We've been there, done that." She then looked to the Doctor. "So, the Zygon is from your world?"
"Yes," the Doctor confirmed as he approached her. "It is. It's pod landed near here. I thought I had it when I found a ship, but it turned out to be yours." He then pulled out his Sonic Screwdriver and used it to scan the area. "
"So we have to get the baby Zygon out of Ray's bedroom and back to where it belongs," Sara commented.
"And how are we supposed to do that?" Felicia asks. "I hate shapeshifters for this reason."
"Uh, well, it should be easy," Ray said. "All we have to do is sneak into my house tomorrow when my mom's at work and I'm at school and kidnap the Zygon. I even know where the spare key is."
"Like stealing candy from a baby." Lane joked.
"But not as fun," Mick whined.
"Well, you do that. I will do a quick search, try and take the pod back with me," the Doctor said, searching the woods.
"I'll go with him," Lane said, heading off to follow.
"I might join," Peter said, quickly following. "Gives me a chance to look in that box of his again."
"So, how did this happen?" Lane asks, following the Doctor into the woods. "I mean, I thought the chaos Weirdmageddon caused was fixed."
"Oh, no," the Doctor said in concern. "There have been small ripples like this going on amongst the universe. I recently had to jump into cracks forming around reality, trying to fix ours."
"Seriously?" Lane asks in surprise. "What was causing that?"
"Me, mostly," the Doctor admitted. "Long story involving the Pandorica. Will fill you in later."
"Hey, Doc!" Peter called, finding what looked like a pod. "This what we are looking for?"
The Doctor rushed over and confirmed that it was a pod, quickly swiping his Screwdriver out and quickly scanning. "Yep, this is indeed the pod."
"Indeed it is," Someone said, causing them to spin around and see that they were quickly surrounded by Agents of sorts. They quickly reacted, with Peter pulling web-shooters, Lane his blaster, and the Doctor his Sonic. "Thank you for finding it for us."
Lane aimed his blaster around when he saw the Doctor aiming his Sonic. "What are you doing?"
"Helping?" the Doctor said, almost like he was guessing.
"It's a scientific instrument, not a water pistol." Lane proclaimed. "Go assemble a cabinet."
"Guys!" Peter called out. "Who are you people?"
"If I told you..." The man in charge said, watching everyone aim weapons at them. "I would have to kill you."
That was followed by them being knocked out by something someone hitting them in the neck with a dart, followed by darkness.
Things weren't really going well for the rest of the team, as Ray ended up running away after overhearing a conversation with his mom, Nate, and Amaya. They then had to chase Ray into the woods to try and find him, and there was a strange reading Sara was following with Felicia.
"Looks like a false alarm," Felicia said, looking around.
"No sign of the Time Bureau here," Sara confirmed.
That was when something happened, getting them to look and see there was a squeaking swing. That was followed by the Zygon charging at them. When Sara tried to fight it off, she punched it and ended up with ooze on her hand.
"Ew." Sara groaned.
Felicia tried the same thing, only to end in the same result. "This is disgusting."
That was when the Zygon struck them, rendering them unconscious.
Peter woke up with a groan as he saw he was in some sort of lab, his arms and legs chained to a table. He looked over and saw the Doctor and Lane were also there, still unconscious. He heard squealing from another room, indicating they must have the young Ray and the Zygon in their clutches.
"Pss!" Peter tried to wake them. "Hey! Guys! Wake up!"
"Huh?" the Doctor started to wake back up. "Oh, hello, we're tied up."
"Noticed that," Peter sighed. "Lane!"
Lane gasped as he tried to jump up, but the restraints were holding him down. "Great. I wish I could say that this is the first time that this has happened."
"This isn't the first time you were tranqed, dragged off, and chained?" Peter asked in surprise. "Either of you?"
"Nope," the Doctor said.
"Sorry," Lane admitted.
"Well, we are stuck in some sort of government lab. I guess this isn't your first time?" Peter asked either of them.
"Fifth time, if I remember correctly," the Doctor admitted.
"Third time," Lane confessed.
"Okay, and they are likely going to start to test us." Peter sighed. "And that isn't going to end well for any of us here, considering we're all not necessarily human."
"Oh, right, we will all come up as aliens to them." Lane didn't even realize that. "We gotta get out of here."
"Well, they seemed to have found my Sonic Screwdriver," the Doctor said, noticing it on a nearby table. "And my psychic paper."
"Psychic what?" Peter asks.
"It's a paper that he uses to make you see whatever he wants," Lane explains. "That and the screwdriver kept him alive all this time. All he would do is think and point with that thing, it did whatever he thought about. Unless you had wood."
"It's not my fault!" the Doctor stated.
"How did you two meet again?" Peter asks.
"Long story," the Doctor said.
"He was once tethered to my friend's mind." Lane gave him the simplified version. "Eli was once a subconscious of the Doctor before we were recruited to defeat Thanos, and they basically separated them. Messed the two of them up. It was like a miniature Bi-Generation." He then rolled his eyes at the Doctor. "Then of course he had to go and regenerate."
"It wasn't my choice," the Doctor defended. "I didn't choose to be poisoned."
"You always end up in that situation one way or another," Lane scoffed. "And by the way, I liked your old face better."
"Oh, really? Well, same to you," the Doctor proclaimed.
"A bow tie? What were you thinking?" Lane asks him.
"Bow ties are cool!" the Doctor stated.
Peter sighed as he looked over to the desk, quickly aiming his web shooter. Seems the scientists knew about his powers but not his gadgets. He quickly shot off a web, latching the paper, but almost hitting the Screwdriver. While the Doctor and Lane continued to argue, Peter focused on the Screwdriver.
Felicia groaned as she woke up in some sort of silk that cocooned her and Sara. She sighed as she shook the cocoon, trying to free herself.
"Sara?" Felicia tried to call out. "Sara?"
Sara groaned as she started to wake up. "What the hell?"
That was when the Zygon marched over, snarling at them. "You know what I'm looking for.
"A breath mint?" Sara gagged at the breath. "Dermatologist recommendation? Reese's Pieces?" That was when the Zygon snarled at her. "Oh, right, your kid. You're looking for your kid. And if you let me go, I'll help you."
"Your species cannot be trusted."
"Well, now I'm offended," Felicia scoffed.
"You're an ex-con," Saea reminded her. "Look, I want to help you. I do. You can't find him without us."
"Agreed." Then the Zygon grabbed her head and absorbed the memories.
When she found what she needed, she raced off and chased after the last location of her child. Ray's house.
Ray snuck onto the base, where he began searching for his friends. Blasting the gym doors, he found Zari. She was surprised to see him and relived to be freed.
"What's going on? Where's kid Ray?" Zari wonders.
"They're interrogating me. Him." Ray explained.
"Code Red. Engaging lockdown protocols."
"Let's go," Ray said, rushing off to find everyone.
Peter managed to grab the Screwdriver, yanking it over and then aiming it at the lock. The locks unlocked, allowing Peter to stand, listening to Land and Doctor continuing to argue with one another.
"Guys!" Peter called out, getting them to look over and see him holding the Screwdriver. "Can we please get to escaping?"
Getting out of the locks, they quickly ran down the halls, trying to find a means to escape. On the way, they found young Ray cornered by the same guy who caught them, making them guess Ray was caught, and they had the Zygon.
"So, why don't you calm down, and we'll have ourselves a nice little chat?"
Ray walked over and grabbed the keys, trying to get into the room. When the man was about to open fire, that was likely how Ray dies. The Doctor quickly whipped the Screadriver out, using it to stop the guns from firing. Peter worked fast as he shot two webs, flying over and taking him down. That was when Ray came in, helping with the reinforcements surprising young Ray who thought he was a toy.
"You're real."
"We got to move. They won't stay down long." Lane warned them.
He's right, let's go," Ray said.
"We can't leave without Gumball." Young Ray said.
"Oh, right." The Doctor quickly used his Screwdriver on the door, unlocking it. "We need that kid if we want to fix that tear in your reality." He then rushed into the room, following the buzz from his Screwdriver. "This way! Come on!"
"Is he always like this?" Zari asks Lane.
"Only ever since he got this face," Lane admitted.
"You got it yet?" Sara asked, trying to get out of the cocoon with Felicia cutting her way out.
"Working on it," Felicia said, cutting her way. Then she finally managed to free her arm, quickly ripping the rest off of her. "Whew. Got it."
Sara groaned as she removed a strand of the goo from her ear, activating the comms. "Where are you guys?"
"Not sure exactly," Ray said. "Looks like they turned the rec center into some kind of government research facility. We're on our way to save the baby Zygon."
"Well, you better hurry because its mom is here, and she's looking for him," Felicia warned them.
"Wait, the Zygon has a Mom?" Nate asks.
"Of course, that's what I was there to scout," the Doctor explained, locating the baby. "Zygons are protective of their young."
"Yeah, noticed that!" Felicia gagged, removing some goo from her hair. "And it gets worse.
"I think she might have read my mind." Sara sighed.
"Wait, what did she see?" Peter wonders.
"Well, she's looking for her baby." Sara sighed. "The last time I saw him was..."
"At my house," Ray said in worry. "My mom's home. If she finds her..."
"Don't worry, we won't let that happen," Amaya said. "I'll keep watch for the Zygon. You check on Ray's mom."
"Okay." Nate complied. "How do I look? I'm kidding."
Amaya sighed as he left and started to look around, hearing what sounded like a muffled screaming. She followed the muffled screaming, wondering where it was coming from.
"Who's there?" Amaya called, finding a cocooned Mrs. Palmer. "Mrs. Palmer?"
"Please help me! Help!"
"But if you're here, then..." Amaya then realized what that meant and rushed to the household. When she got there, she saw Nate on the couch with Mrs. Palmer on top of him in a seductive way. "Get away from him, you bitch."
"Oh, come on, don't tell me you're jealous," Nate scoffed.
"No, she's messing with your mind," Amaya said. "She's making you see things. Nate, that is not Ray's mother."
"Don't be ridiculous." Nate scoffed. "Of course it's Ray's mom. Who else would it be?" That was when the Zygon shapeshifted back to its true form. "Oh, my God." He gagged. "I kissed a Zygon. And I liked it."
Nate tried to get up, but the Zygon shapeshifted back into Mrs. Palmer. Pushing Nate back on the couch.
"What's the matter? Don't you think I'm pretty?"
Amaya used her amulet to activate her powers and leaped to tackle the Zygon to give them a chance to get up and escape.
"Sara, we found the Zygon."
They rushed out of the house and raced into the woods. The Zygon chased after them, everyone seeing them as they raced off.
"Whoa. Awesome costume." A kid said.
"We're almost back to the ship," Sara said as she and Felicia raced through the woods. "I'll fly to you, and we'll try to lure her onto the brig."
"Oh, crap." Felicia sighed. "Sara?"
They rushed over to the Waverider and found it was also cocooned.
"'Oh, crap' what?" Ray asks.
"Where's Mick?" Sara wonders.
They heard a monstrous roar, looking near where the entrance to the ship should be, and found Mick. They quickly ripped him free of the webbing, and he gagged.
"That freaking alien Gooed me!" Mick snarled as he climbed up, trying to use his heat gun that was covered in goo. "Come on!"
"All right, on to plan B." Sara sighed. "Lead the momma here." She told Nate and Amaya. "Guys, you're going to have to save the baby and bring it here."
They searched the facility until, finally, the Screwdriver pinned the Zygon baby.
"Gumball." Young Ray called as he raced over to free the young child.
"A-ha!" Doctor cheered. "Well, we've got the baby. All we need to do is-"
"Surrender." Someone said, gerring them to see dozens of armed men enter the room. "Now."
Everyone looked around, looking down at Young Ray and then over towards everyone else. They all seemed to have the same idea.
"Lane... stun. No killing." Peter warned him.
"You love making things hard for me," Lane sighed, setting his blaster to stun.
Then chaos erupted. Ray shrank down and flew ovv, punching the armed agents. Zari quickly used her medallion to manipulate air when they shot bullets off towards them, shielding young Ray as he tried to free Gumball.
Lane quickly spun around, sending off a blast towards the agents to stun them. The Doctor drew his screwdriver again and began setting it off in different directions. Peter leaped into the air, shooting off webbing to latch onto the agents.
"Get the kids out of here!" Lane called out.
"Alright, come on!" Zari said, pushing young Ray and the Zygon towards the exit.
"Don't let them follow!" Peter called to Ray.
"On it!" Ray followed after them, getting them back to the ship.
Lane was still shooting, backing up to get out of the open, when he bumped into the Doctor. "What are you doing?!"
"Helping!" the Doctor defended himself, continuing to shoot the screwdriver off.
"You have a screwdriver!" Lane cried in annoyance. "Go assemble a cabinet!"
"That's just very rude!" Doctor cried.
"Momgon incoming!" Nate cried as he and Zari reached Felicia, Mick, and Sara.
"I'll take her." Mick snarled, raising his gun at the forest. "This one's personal. She put me in a cocoon."
That was when Ray, his younger self, and Zari reached the site with Gumball. Just as the Zygon mother reached them. She snarled when she saw them, but young Ray revealed the young one, and the mother began to calm down.
"Go ahead," Zari told young Ray.
Ray approached the mother and took Gumball out of his bag. "You have to go now." He explained to the young one. "You need your mom. But we'll still be friends."
Gumball seemed sad to hear that.
"I'll be all right," Ray promises. "I have people here to take care of me." He looked back to the group. "And I wouldn't have found them without you. Go on. Go on, little buddy. Go to your mama."
Gumball still seemed hesitant as he took small steps before slowly but surely making his way over to his mama. The Zygon picked up the young child and held it close. The sight was a little sad to the Legends as young Rya teared up at losing his friend.
"See you later, Gumball," Ray said as they watched the pod they found fly down, and the two entered. Peter, the Doctor, and Lane showed up just as they watched the pod leave.
The Zygon pod flew off, leaving this world and heading back through the tear they fell from. Nate reached up and wiped his eyes of tears.
"I'm not crying." Nate lied. "I just have, uh, alien goo in my eye."
"Yeah, me too," Sara said, tearing up.
"You think they'll be okay?" Lane asks.
"Oh, for sure, they'll likely group back with the others," the Doctor promised. "Once I leave, I'll fix the tear that caused them to fall through."
"That's good to hear," Nate sifhed as he walked off. "Now I'm gonna go brush my teeth forever."
"Wait. Why?" Ray asks, not aware of what has occurred.
The evening air was crisp as everyone gathered to ensure the safety of young Ray and his mother. After a whirlwind of laughter and excitement from trick-or-treating with Ray, Lane found himself saying his bittersweet farewells to the Doctor.
"Well, I really must be off," the Doctor announced, his voice laced with a familiar warmth. "As always, it's been wonderful to see you again, Lane."
Lane, with a hint of curiosity flickering in his eyes, responded, "Yeah, how are the others? Have you seen them around lately?"
The Doctor's brow furrowed slightly, his expression momentarily clouded. "Ah, I think I had a rather peculiar encounter with them involving a castle at the very end of time," he confessed, a mixture of intrigue and confusion dancing in his gaze. "But alas, time waits for no one, and I really must go."
"Hey, Doc?" Lane called out, his voice echoing with urgency before the Doctor could slip away into the folds of time. "What caused the tear to begin with?"
The question hung heavily in the air, making the Doctor stiffen ever so slightly, an unsettling shadow crossing his features. "I don't know," he answered, his voice dropping to a solemn whisper. "But whatever it was... this isn't the end, Lane. Whatever triggered this... It's going to happen again. And this world seems to be a pivotal point in the storm that's to come."
Lane's expression darkened at the Doctor's ominous words, a sense of foreboding wrapping around him like a thick fog. Before he could dwell on it further, the Doctor hastily retreated into the familiar blue box. With a rush of energy, the TARDIS whirred to life and vanished into the encroaching night, leaving only the echo of its engines behind.
Sighing, Lane turned his gaze skyward, a small smile breaking through the clouds of his thoughts as he watched the ship disappear. "Still fun," he murmured to himself, the thrill of adventure still sparking in his heart as he transformed his attention toward the Waverider, ready to embrace whatever awaited him next.
