"You two make such a cute couple!" Gwen teased her colleagues, as Ianto adjusted Jack's tie, and Jack picked a bit of lint off Ianto's lapel.

Her comment went down like a lead balloon; both men turned to glare at her.

"Stop calling us that!" Jack snapped. "We hate that word; we're NOT a couple!"

"Protest all you want, but you act like you're a couple. I don't know why you get so worked up when I call you that. It's just a word."

"The wrong word. A couple means two of something. It's just…" Jack shuddered. "That's not what we are, you might as well be calling us a pair, like two matching shoes, or socks. It's demeaning."

"But 'couple' is used for any two people in a romantic relationship," Gwen insisted. "Rhys and I are a married couple. Hearing people say that doesn't bother us."

Jack huffed. "You want to be a couple, that's your choice, but it's not ours. We're not a pair of anything, we're… two halves of a whole. Right, Ianto?"

"Right." Ianto nodded. "You're my other half."

"And you're my better half." Jack beamed at his lover. "I'd be half a man without you."
