Chapter 48

Simon's Operation

Back to the ER.

Receptionist: I have not been able to get ahold of the other surgeon on standby.

Nurse: We don't have a choice. Page Dr. Riley to the OR.

Receptionist: Yes ma'am!

The Receptionist then runs out to the page phone.

Receptionist: DR. RILEY REPORT TO THE OR IMMEDIATELY! DR. RILEY REPORT TO THE OR IMMEDIATELY!

Dr. Riley reports to the OR within a couple of minutes.

Dr. Riley: Been a long time since I have been paged here. She says with a smile on her face. What's up?

Nurse: Follow me.

Dr. Riley follows the Receptionist into an OR room.

Nurse: Dr. Riley, we need you. She says in a very serious tone.

Dr. Riley: You can't mean operate!?

Nurse: Yes, I do. I know you quit being a surgeon but we NEED you he NEEDS you!

Dr. Riley: What about Dr. Keith or Dr…..

Nurse: We've tried everyone. Now it's either scrub in or let him die.

Dr. Riley: Well, I don't really have a choice do I. I will scrub in.

Soon Dr. Riley comes back in and is ready for surgery.

Nurse: Ready?

Dr. Riley: Yes. Scalpel.

Soon, Dr. Riley, has Simon cut open and has begun evaluating the damage to his body.

Dr. Riley: We will have to do a pneumonectomy to remove his right lung. It's too badly damaged to save.

Nurse: Here are the tools you will need.

Dr. Riley then begins removing Simon's right lung.

Dr. Riley: Whatever this was went all the way through him. This is going to take some time. You better inform the family.

Nurse: I will have the Receptionist send someone to inform them.

Dr. Riley continues the surgery while the Nurse goes to tell the Receptionist to send someone up to tell Dave about Simon.

Nurse: Will you find someone to inform Dave Seville that Simon's surgery will take longer than expected.

Receptionist: Yes ma'am!

The Receptionist finds another Nurse.

Receptionist: Hey are you busy?

Nurse 2: I just got out of surgery. What do you need?

Receptionist: I need someone to inform Dave Seville that his sons' surgery will take longer than expected.

Nurse 2: What!? What happened to Alvin!?

Receptionist: Oh, you haven't heard. They found Simon! He was badly hurt and Dr. Riley is operating on him now.

Nurse 2: Yes, I will go inform them.

As Nurse 2 walks off Dr. Keith comes up.

Dr. Keith: Dr. Riley is operating?

Receptionist: Yes, we couldn't get anyone else.

Dr. Keith: I better go check on her.

Dr. Keith changes scrubs and soon enters the OR.

Dr. Keith: Well, I never thought I would see this sight again.

Dr. Riley: Oh, thank goodness! You can take over Dr. Keith. She says in a very relieved tone of voice.

Dr. Keith: Nope. You started and you can finish. Nurse, you are relieved.

The Nurse nods her head and leaves.

Dr. Riley: This is exactly the reason why I no longer operate.

Dr. Keith: Because you can't handle the pressure?

Dr. Riley: No because I can't handle you! I could be killing him and you are just standing there watching me fail.

Dr. Keith: Funny. I don't see failure when I look at you.

Dr. Riley: What?

Dr. Keith: Do you really think I would let you continue to operate if you weren't doing it right? If I thought for a second you were unable to handle this, I would have stepped in.

Dr. Riley: But what about all the times you criticized me when I studied under you?

Dr. Keith: You showed the most potential of any student I ever had. I wanted to push you to be as great a surgeon as I am.

Dr. Riley: So why did you not say any of this before!? I would have continued being a surgeon!

Dr. Keith sighs.

Dr. Keith: Because as great a surgeon as you are, you are even better at what you do now. Psych is where you really shine and I knew that. Keeping you in surgery would have been a mistake.

Dr. Riley: Wow. Thank you, Dr. Keith, I….. I don't know what to say.

Dr. Keith: Then don't say anything. Do something and finish up this surgery.

Dr. Riley: Yes sir! She says smiling under her mask.

Back to Dave, Theodore, and Bobby.

Nurse 2: Are you Dave Seville?

Dave: Yes, I am.

Nurse 2: Simon's surgeon asked me to tell you that once they opened him up, they found more damage and that his surgery will take longer than expected.

Dave: Thank you for informing me. Do you know anything more?

Nurse 2: I am sorry sir I do not. We are shorthanded right now. I just got out of another surgery and was sent up here. As soon as they know something or his surgery is finished, they will send someone up.

Dave: Thank You.

Theodore: Dave?

Dave: Yes Theodore?

Theodore: Can I go see Alvin? I would like to go check on him.

Dave: That sounds like a good idea. Would you like us to come with you?

Theodore: No. I would just like a couple of minutes alone with him.

Dave: Take your time.

Theodore then heads off to Alvin's room.

Dave: How about we go get some snacks, Bobby?

Bobby: YES! He says with great big eyes.

Bobby and Dave then leave to go find a vending machine.

Theodore reaches the door to Alvin's room and slowly opens it.

Alvin turns his head to Theodore.

Theodore: You're awake!? Shouldn't you be asleep?

Alvin: Y..yes But I keep having ni..nightmares that we will never see Si..Simon again. I HATE this st..stutter I can't even say my own brothers na..name right!

Theodore: I know this is difficult for you Alvin. But don't forget that Dr. Riley is talking with Dr. Keith. They will do whatever they can to get you back to your old self! He says with a smile on his face.

Alvin: Ok Theo , I wi..will try to stay po..positive.

Theodore: Also, I have good news. Simon was found alive!

Alvin then starts to tear up with tears of joy.

Alvin: He's re..really alive!? How is he!? Wh..Were is he!? Wh..When can I see him!?

Theodore: He is in surgery right now. He was hurt pretty badly by the kidnappers.

Alvin's tears of joy quickly turn to tears of sadness.

Alvin: How bad!? He says sobbing.

Theodore: I really don't know how bad Alvin, but if he made it through the kidnapping, he will make it through surgery.

Alvin then wipes away his tears.

Alvin: Your right Theo! I need to be st..strong! Agitated by his stutter he begins clenching his fist.

Theodore sees Alvin is become agitated.

Theodore: That's right Alvin. He says slowly taking steps toward Alvin. Be strong for Simon our brother, our friend. Theodore then leans in toward Alvin. Our lover. He says whispering to Alvin.

Alvin chuckles.

Alvin: Oh, Theo leave it to you to make me re..remember what's important. I had almost fo..forgotten. Say Theo can you he..help me?

Theodore: Sure, Alvin what is it?

Alvin: I don't seem to have mu..much memory of my ac..accident. I would like you to fill in the bl..blanks for me. Because I have to know what ha..happened.

Theodore: I don't know Alvin. I mean you are still recovering and…

Alvin cuts Theodore off.

Alvin: Please Theo I really ne..need this. He says with a very serious face.

Theodore: Alright Alvin. He says sighing.
