Excerpt from "The Wondrous Life and Terrible Times of Harwyn Hardrada"
By Maester Qarthiana Jons POV
Harwyn Harhand. It is a name that is spoken with reverence even after over half a millennium after the Doom, and why should it not be? It is the name of the first Imperator of Westeros, regardless of whether the crowning was conducted after his untimely death by his heir Hannibal the Heroic (or the Cannibal if one enjoy's foregoing the first true Imperator's many accomplishments in lieu of his more…recreational activities)
Harwyn Hardhand, at the time a Prince of House Hoare had proven his worth as a Steel Forged dozens of times over even before the creation of the Sacred Band of Tyr. He had proved it in the towers of Asshai, on the ports of Yi-Ti, in the jungles of Northern Sothoryos, in the fighting pits of Slaver's Bay in the Battles Temples of the Summer Isles, in each of the coastal of the Free Cities and in Westeros.
I would like to give you a small prologue to the many great deeds of the Hardhand before the infamous Lion's Erring. From his birth to the aftermath of the death of uncle and mentor, Urrigon the Undying, I will speak of his family, companions, enemies, lovers and more.
The primary source of this book will be the Chronicles of the Steel Forged with supporting sources being the Abridged Diary of Harwyn Hardhand and the Zaegreian Summary of the Century of Blood.
Two years before the Doom of Valyria, the date from which we divide Western history, Harwyn Hoare was born on the Trickster, the flagship of his father, to Qhorwyn "the Cunning" Hoare, the then twenty and four aged Crown Prince of the Iron Islands and his rock wife Dalta Greyjoy the only daughter of Lord Reaper of Pyke, Dalton "the Deranged" Greyjoy.
The legendary founder of the Imperial House of Hardrada was said to have been born the same as he lived, with blood in his fist and defiance upon his lips. The night of his birth was a full moon but one could tell from simply looking up as an unexpected storm came over the Isles. During that particular night the Crown Prince and his family, including the pregnant Dalta and their sons Harrold and Harland, were returning to Harlanshall from his good father's castle.
The storm was reported to be mild to other parts of the Isles, however, the sea between Pyke and Great Wyk seemed like a sailor's hell with roaring winds, towering waves and thunder descending like a hammer in a smithery. This would later lead to the belief that the Storm God had sent his Twin Terrors themselves to prevent the birth of the greatest champion of the Drowned God since Surtur himself. Harwyn, always a master of propaganda, stoked the flames of this rumor until it became a veritable fact.
While most modern historians, myself included, refer to this as nothing more than a coincidence, one cannot ignore that there could not be a more fitting start to the story of the Hardhand. It was only due to the remarkable seamanship of Prince Qhorwyn and the Trickster's crew who fought to keep the royal family alive that we live in the world we do today. At first they tried to return the long way to Pyke but after Delta's water broke it was decided that it would be safer to continue onwards to the capital of Harrenstown.
Princess Dalta likewise fought inside her husband's cabin and on the birthing bed, to give birth to her third child, birthing was at the time at its own incredibly dangerous but the current circumstances made it all the more potentially fatal. She suffered this pain for nearly a dozen hours while simultaneously comforting her frightened children, the seven year old heir, Harrold and the five year old spare Harlan. Harwyn would tell his brother and rival Harlan at that time believed Ragnarok had come.
It is a popular misconception that Harwyn's only sister Helga, who would go on to marry Qhorin Volmark, was his elder due to her attempted usurpation of the Sea Stone Chair. In truth she would not be born until three years later, a year after the Doom.
Harwyn was said to take his first breath just as his father's moved the ship out of the way from a thunderbolt so large that it would have capsized the ship if it was slightly to the left and what it would have done if it struck the wooden ship is best left to the imagination. Just as the cries of the newborn Prince filled the cabin, the storm's wrath began to cool as if it sensed that it had failed its goal, according to the Chronicles at least.
Dalta was said to have fallen unconscious as soon she saw her son in her handmaiden and good sister's arms, Helga, who would be the namesake of her only royal niece. It would be, ironically enough, Prince Harlan who held Harwyn before anyone in his family. Who would have thought that 16 years later it would be Harwyn who would be the last person to hold Harlan.
Harwyn would later boast that his birth was the most dramatic out of all his companions to the aforementioned companions. These companions included his uncle Urrigon "the Undying" Greyjoy and his bastard son, Ralf Salt and to Floki Drumm another distant relation through his paternal great aunt Helga Drumm being Harwyn's grandmother.
Harwyn was born to one of the most distinguished lineages in history, with Kings who held dominion over the Iron Islands going back thousands of years. As the King's youngest son he was said to have been shown far too much favour and far too little responsibility. Queen Mother Helga Drumm, the namesake of her daughter and her granddaughter, would boost her grandson using the sycophants of the court like an alley whore and have them pay for their own.
King Harren Hoare the First of His Name, also known by his epithet of the Humerus for his jolly nature, was said to have shown a particular favour towards his youngest grandson. While most interpret it as general doting on the youngest grandson, in reality it was the due to the securing of his sons line against those of his many daughters
While it is not recorded how many daughters of King Harren there were, it can be gleaned that nearly every major noble house and even some middling Houses had the right to call themselves the goodfamily of the King. Normally this would not prove to be a major, however King Qhorwyn was the last child and only son of his father.
This caused friction amongst the many aunts and their High Lord husbands of Harwyn who wished for their line to succeed their aging King. The only daughter who showed loyalty to their brother without any self-interest, Helga was blessed with a royal goddaughter as a reward by her beloved brother. Her namesake, Helga the Younger, would marry Qhorin Volmark who would go on to become one of Harwyn's most loyal lieutenants.
It was said that King Harren fought to live to his eight decade all so that he could do everything to secure the peace for his son and Kingdom which he had built after years with Kingdoms of the Reach, Rock and WInter. He married his son to the daughter of the only major Lord with whom he shared no bonds of kinship.
That Lord was Dalton Greyjoy. Why did Lord Greyjoy share no bonds you ask? That is quite simple, Dalton was betrothed to the eldest daughter of the King but chose to break his oath after he fell in love with Freya Farwynd for which he was barred from the gates of Harlanshall. Yes, dead readers the legendary rainbow eyes of House Hardrada which awoke as a recessive gene in Imperator Hannibal came from such a scandal.
The only major House not to have a daughter of the King married into them was House Drumm but it was decided not to pick a daughter from them for the same reason as a princess was not married to them. It would seem like favouritism for the same House of the Queen Helga to have a princess or a second queen in the same generation.
This formed a solid alliance block within the Houses Hoare, Drumm, Vokmark, Drumm, Greyjoy and Farwynd. The fact Queen Helga was third rock wife of the King was said to have also been a point of contention with daughters who were of similar age with the Queen whose son stole what they believed to be their birthright. They other Houses would later scramble to get into the good graces of the King who they had scorned.
Harwyn at the time of birth was not expected to succeed his sharp witted father upon the Seastone Chair as Harwyn had only been the spare's spare of his grandfather, Harren the Humorous. However circumstances forced him to accept his destiny, His eldest brother would die of greyscale while middle brother would pass away the Night of Long Knives. Though it was said to be an accident, the death was considered suspicious by many and after the King Qhorwyn and the brief rebellion Princess Helga allowed Harwyn to claim the throne as King of the Iron Islands and the Sunset Sea.
Harwyn's deep love for his brothers and sister are the only reason we have such detailed accounts of their lives and personality. Harwyn described Harrold as having been the perfect heir and having gentle personality, a man without anger who was always in control of himself and despite his affliction of greyscale plaguing him since childhood, he fought to make his life beneficial to his realm.
Harwyn is quoted to have said "Before he even became a man grown, my dear Harry taught myself and Lanny (the nickname of Prince Harlan) the duties expected of Prince of the Realm. He had at that young age accepted he would have any heirs and instead of raging like I would have done, he moved forward with grace. He did not treat us with poison in his heart because of our good health but rather celebrated his brother's good fortune and never made us feel unloved. Truly it is the righteous amongst us that are tested most severely by the Gods and low and behold my brother endured like no other."
Harwyn held high regards towards Prince Harlan and Princess Helga despite the former's tragic death due the foolishness of Harwyn which resulted in the laters hatred of her once most beloved brother and subsequent rebellion to crown her son Harlan Volmark as King of the Iron Islands despite the protests of her husband Qhorin. In truth, modern pop culture has distorted the view between brother and sister as they both frequently exchanged letters after the tragedy and had largely been genial with one another.
According to Harwyn the Rebellion of the Fortnight was "An attempt to preserve our brother Harlan's legacy along with the legacy of House Hoare against his killer and my usurping House of Hardrada. If I had been in her shoes I would have done the same."
Harwyn was reported to be an exceptionally gifted child who was as belligerent, bold and demanding as he was fiercely intelligent. While most ironborn were only considered fearsome at sea and with their bodies and weaponry, Harwyn was a menacing figure on both land and sea and this was due to his vast knowledge and legendary cunning.
The young prince was said to be a prodigy by talent and hardwork, being proclaimed by his uncle to be the most natural sailor he has ever seen since Harwyn had begged to join natural sailor since his first voyage at five years old. However, his talents did not leave him off the longships, instead they revealed themselves to be just as potent.
Harwyn was famous as a polymath and is known nowadays as a prime example of a " Renaissance Prince" for bringing the knowledge of the east to Westeros and building upon it to reach new heights. It is said that his love for Valyria, including but not limited to language, cuisine, style of dress, governmental and military structure, mythology, sorcery and especially their dragons, was so great that he cried louder at the news of the Doom of Valyria at age seven than at the age of five at the death of his beloved grandfather.
Harwyn's voracious love for all kinds of knowledge extended from facilitating breeding of the first large scale human and giant breeding to the exploration of coasts of Sothorys with Naathi traders and even to expansion of previous mathematical fields such as calculus and algebra. While many eastern concepts such as centralization of authority from Yi-Ti, superior accounting methods such as double-entry bookkeeping from the Free Cities, a comparative sexual liberation (considering these were still mediaeval times) from the Summer Isles and more.
However, despite his well known greed for rare tomes and knowledge of the past, Harwyn was generous with education and believed it should be available to all, highborn or smallfolk. This remarkably modern belief led to the creation of the House of Knowledge on the God's Eye. However the world oldest University would not be built until the conquest of the Riverlands which was decades off. In the meantime the court of Peremore the Twisted come again was being established, which is a story in of itself.
What began as private discussions with Royal Maester soon expanded into a cabal of the most learned men and women, whose induction was quite a scandal at the time, of the Iron Islands. This along with rapid inclusion of easterners coming to the Isles after Harwyn's adventures laid the foundation of an intellectual resurgence. This Guild of Learning would go on to include artisans, wise men, teachers, priests, healers, singers, wizards, alchemists, sorcerers, maesters, scholars, halfmaesters, engineers from across the known world.
These pursuits were funded largely by Harwyn and his companions who made it quite a trend to donate money to "further the pursuit of knowledge" as it was called, this term was coined by Dalton the Deranged after he commissioned a nude painting of his wife, Harwyn's grandmother. Qhorwyn, a peaceful king who focused on trade, tripled the fleets of House Hoare and expanded the armament of his forces to deter adversaries from attacking the Iron Islands also extended a generous hand towards his son's so-called "pets".
What propelled this circle of academics against many others across the known world into the harbingers of a scientific innovation was a vast improvement on the "Three Great Inventions of Yi-Ti". The evolution from parchment to paper, the printing press for ease of information sharing and the compass which allowed for a never before seen expansion in global trade. These boons allowed for the foundation of Westeros future technological supremacy over the known world.
However, we are getting ahead of ourselves, at the time of Erring these inventions were still in their experimentational state. That is not even mentioning the many inventions that came after Harwyn's exile such as the invention of the small-eye, which was fairly easily reconstructed from the far-eye. This led to the discovery of 'Microscopic World', and all our modern understanding of cells, atoms, germs and such can be traced from his discovery.
It is difficult to believe this great feat was only performed due to a young Harwyn's hatred of his paperwork and deep knowledge of magnifying glasses or Far Eyes as they were called. This fact is supported by the passage and I kid not when I quote "I invoke the holy rays of the dawn with this sacred lens to beseech with Holy Flames of the Heavens to burn away the parchment shaped demons on my desk! Free me from this torment, oh Lords of Light!"
At the time, this only led to a basic understanding of Germ Theory which led to rapid increase in standards of sanitation. Cities were designed in a way to optimize waste collection like never before and the Ministry of Health was given wide sweeping powers on par with the Ministry of War. The Secretary of the Sewers was said to have more influence than many high ranking members of the extended Royal Family.
The use of famed architects to design cities and the buildings inside them for disease prevention would also lead to a rapid increase in interest towards the arts. It was considered to be a common belief that a city's strength should be reflected in its beauty. This practice would spread from roads and government buildings to the paintings, statues, carpets and more inside to even the houses of the emerging middle class.
Harwyn earned the title of the "Father of Explorers" due to his great contributions in the field of seamanship alongside being recognized as of greatest naval commanders in human history whose strategies are still studied in modern military academies. While the compass, sextant and other such inventions were instrumental in the advent of the "Age of Exploration", the most vital contribution of Harwyn Hardrada was the creation of the caravel.
As his reward for suppressing the greatest rebellion in Leng's history, the God-Emperor gave Harwyn a golden opportunity to bring his design of the first caravel ship to fruition. With the wealth and experience of Yi-Ti and inspiration from Essosi ships and in particular the Swan ships of the Summer Isles, Harwyn was able to bring his boyhood dream to fruition.
His personal ship theHardhandwas built in a caravel style, which basically means that the planks were placed edge to edge which boosted the speed of the vessel significantly. The issue of salt water leakage resulting in the corrosion of the caulking needed to seal the gaps in the planks were solved alongside the overall corrosion issue by sheathing the entire hull with copper. Despite the near doubling of price it was said to be appropriate given the benefits it awarded any vessel. This expensive practice would not become common until Harwyn became King of the Iron Islands.
The tales of deep friendship, black humor and daring adventure between the companions of Harwyn Hardhand are well known by every man, woman and child of the realm. Hence, I will not be wasting your time with such well known figures. From the Walker who grew alongside his cousin in the same castle to the foster brother who would go on to become the Grim Reaper and the founder of the biggest modern religion, Rasputin or Gregor the Rasper as he was called in his early years.
Yet as a devout enjoyer of the early history of the Steel Forged, I would like to later tell the tale of the Heavenly Demon's (at the time known as Salazar Saan's) first meeting with Prince Harwyn which led to his months long enslavement in the Basilisk Isles and lifelong hatred of the Lyseni pirate lord.
To set the stage, at the age five Harwyn successfully corralled his uncle, Urrigon Greyjoy, to accept him as a rower and deckhand on Salt Shaker, alongside his cousin Ralf and foster brother Floki. Harwyn would in his first voyage a month later travel as far as the Basilisk Isles for the purpose of plundering the coastal towns under the preview of the Valyrian City of Gogossos where he would kill his first man, a towns guard, with a dagger to the throat.
By the age of 10, he had reaved on the tax shipments of the Morqai Shaneshan's enemies, the Pureborn of Qarth, in the Cinnamon Straits. Harwyn would be taught to pick his targets with extreme caution by his uncle, for it was not only the Shaneshah that paid for the weakening of the Pureborn but factions inside the Qath as well, hence doubling or sometimes even tripling the coin of the Ironborn with a single action they would have performed for a quarter of their final profit.
By 15, he had broken bread with necromancers and shadow binders of Asshai, fought in half a hundred battles and lain with women across the known world. He had visited every port from the ruins of Hardhome to the Broken Hand of Dorne, from the easternmost Free City of Essaria to southernmost Free City of Gogossos and from Lonely Light, the home of his maternal grandmother to the Shadowlands where few sailors dare to tread.
Harwyn did not just visit, raid and return like other Ironborn before him who journeyed East, no he left outposts and factories that would prove instrumental in the future colonization efforts of Westeros. The first outpost was established on the Isle of Bloodstone to corner the trade of dyes from Tyrosh from their Westerosi rivals. Harwyn's eleventh nameday was celebrated alongside the establishment of the outpost after their return from the first voyage to the Jade Gates.
These outposts have in my opinion were instrumental in changing Ironborn attitudes towards mercantilism. The warrior culture of the Ironborn easily adapted towards the harsh environment of the Stepping Stones and the business attitudes of the Tyrosh slowly leaked into the reavers stationed on Bloodstone. They would fight pirates, mostly financed by Lys or Myr, for Tyrosh and receive dyes and coin for their efforts and soon they begin trading, or indulging in the gold way, with their patrons.
These cultural shifts were similarly observed in outposts in the Essosi mainland alongside other Free Cities, in Slaver's Bay, Lhazar, Summer Isles, Southern Moraq and even the factory in the city of Yin founded less than a year before the Lions Erring. These changes would lead to the founding of the East Morqai Trading Company, the Pearl Bank, the Conquistadors and more.
Another notable quirk of Prince Harwyn was that despite his voracious appetite for carnal pleasures he did not take any Salt Wives till he had reached his sixteenth year. Even then he would only have three salt wives and one rock wife, for it his belief that every wife and the children that would come from their union needed to receive adequate attention from their spouse and father.
This would eventually become a trend with wealthy Ironborn marrying one rock wife and having three salt wives from lower social stratas. This custom would eventually would later be crystalized into a law by Harwyn's grandchildren, Zaegreus Fortivir and Melinoea Domina Cinerum (Fortivir translates to The Virtuous Man while Domina Cinerum means The Lady of Ash for those who do not speak Valyrian). Our modern laws regarding single partner marriage can be traced from these events.
Now onto the most hated adversary of Harwyn Hardrada, and that title is not a modern invention either, it was a commonly known fact even in Harwyn's time. One cannot help feel the absolute loathing Hardrada must have felt for Salazar Saan rising from the and the multiple accounts of the rants Harwyn would go into if Salazar was so much as even mentioned. Even after Salazar's death it was common for the Royal Family to say "Salazar has slithered through the gates" to express a disaster of immense magnitude.
Not even the Shogun of Leng who took his beloved uncle from Harwyn could elicit such a passionate response. For the entirety of their lives Harwyn and Salazar remained in a constant battle of wills for supremacy until they both met their end on the same day during the 1st Poppy War against Y-Ti in which Harwyn's goal was to force the removal of ban on the lucrative export of Milk of Poppy.
Even the very conception of the Sacred Band of Tyr, named after the Grey King's wander lusty and foreign weapon collecting son who was said to be the first Ironborn to travel to Yi-Ti, was in response to Saan. The Slithering Sons of Maedusa, were structured along the model of the Marine Legions of Old Valyria and had quickly gained notoriety as the most fearsome sell-sail in Essos after their founding.
The Iron Forged of the Sacred Band and the Basilisks of the Sons of Maedusa fought in battles across every major war of the Century of Blood on opposing sides from Reunification Wars of the Free Cities to the Gogossos-Summer Island Wars to the formation of the Neo-Ghiscari Empire and more. During each of these wars their commander's hatred of one another bled into their soldiers leading to every battle being fought to the bitter end.
One could not imagine these Titans of History would meet in a manner so mundane. What was supposed to be a perfectly ordinary voyage to the outpost at Walano led to the kidnapping of the four and teen year old Prince Harwyn with only a note stabbed with a Lyseni poison dagger to the wall of his room at the fort left behind. The letter stated:
"Most Beloved Reader
I, the soon to be favourite kidnappers of yours, have at this very moment realised how much of an unpaid whore I have left you to deal with. My, my, I must have created quite the spectacle, I hope I did not prove to be too much of a nuisance for you.
On more pressing topics, I have taken your hardy little boy for a play date. You need not worry, I have quite a few fun games in mind for us so your dear Prince will not be bored. I plan to return him in a year or so but If he proves himself entertaining enough I mayhaps allow him my leave sooner.
Do not fear, if he is worthy then I will allow him to return and if he is not then…Let us hope there is enough left behind for a proper funeral. Honestly, I would not hope for an open casket if he breaks too soon, after all I like playing quite roughly with my toys.
Yours Lovingly,
The Friend in Pink"
The perpetrator of this crime was quickly discovered to be an exiled noble from Lys who was forbidden entry into his home city after he slew his father by cutting him little pieces while he still drew breath. Salazar Saan was the first of his name to become a Pirate Lord for which his family is so infamous, he was known for wearing a large coat made of pink flamingo feathers, hence the pink in the name at the bottom of the letter.
The friend comes from the fact that during the previous night, a man of noble Valyrian features had asked for a moment to speak with Harwyn in a tavern where they were celebrating the nameday of Galon of the Golden Grin. The night of revelry had continued more or less the same until a man of handsome Valyrian features had absconded Prince Harwyn for a conversation.
The details of the conversation remain unknown with even the personal diary of Harwyn remaining mute on the subject. What is known is that after the conversation was over Harwyn appeared to be very stressed and was said to have repeated "What was that thing? Why was it's soul so…" under his breath before excusing himself to his room.
While his companions wished to follow him, they were persuaded to give him some time in solitude by his uncle, this would prove to be a catastrophic mistake. The guards at the fort reported to have not seen Harwyn return when questioned, this led to the assumption that he was taken in the street. This assumption would be proven true when a drunk man whore confessed to seeing a boy matching the Prince's description being taken by men in all white and scarfs of pink.
What followed were three months of frantic searching across the Summer Sea, with Floki taking over the search around Saan's current residence of Gogossos, Ralf the search around Saan birthplace of Lys and Urrigon the search around the Summer Isles if they were still there along with the lesser Ironborn searching in places such as Slaver's Bay.
When news reached the Iron Islands, King Qhorwyn and the rest of his sons left the capital alongside many nobles and Captains to search for the lost royal. Queen Dalta meanwhile ruled on her husband's behalf with her young daughter's support being the only thing that kept her functional. The passionate sermons performed by Gregor the Rasper to pray for their prince's return sparked a tide of converts towards his developing Church.
Prince Harlan was shown to spend the most effort in the search for his brother, often foregoing his meals and regular sleep in his attempts to resume his brother. It was that only Prince Harrold's desire to not lose another brother kept the middle Prince alive. Prince Harrold also
Their eldest son also joined their father in the Bloodstone leading the search efforts including Ironobron and their allies such as the search parties sent out by Lys in a vain hope to keep relations positive
The search was called off along with the bounty placed on Salazar's head after a letter was found in the chambers of the Queen from Harwyn's hand, alongside a lock of his hair. The letter requested that they stop searching for Salazar or the only thing he would leave to be found was Harwyn's severed head. The fleets of the Drowned God returned home dejected with failure and without any clue as to the whereabouts of their lost prince
The final month was spent in the performance of daily rituals with a great deal of sorrow alongside a rapid increase of prayers for their lost Prince. The efforts of the Drowned Men to silence the growing cult of the Rasper in the Prince's absence was met with unanimous criticism from across the Isles. The attempted act of causing pain to a dear friend for the Prince when he was missing was seen by all as spineless and distasteful. This act further boosted the popularity of Gregor's cult over the traditional religious sects of the Isles.
There are no written records of what happened during the four months of enslavement due to Harwyn's silence on the matter. What is known is that after his return to Harlanshall in exactly the fourth month since his disappearance he looked different. Physically, he seemed far more fit and alert than before, with the expectations of some minor scars and the slave branding over his bread showing a reddish pink jester sealed in the border of a snake eating its own tail.
However, appearances can be deceiving as this event was said to have left a great wound on the mind of Prince. Harwyn who was already famous for his eccentric and cruel nature became somewhat unhinged. While his boyhood charm matured into the aura of warrior, every action he would take was marked with a sign of mania that was not there before if those who knew him in their youth were to be asked.
The consequences of this rise in daring would be felt in the Great Lengii rebellion which would claim his uncle's life. It was Harwyn's decision to help Yi-Tish forces in suppressing the rebels despite their original goal only being a voyage to Asshai to normalize their life from the events a year pass. This event would not temper him greatly as threw himself head first into Lions Erring, which while successful would lay the framework for his exile.
Even contemporary writers wrote that Harwyn felt unmanned after being branded and treated like less than an animal for months. The reckless actions of the coming two years have been commonly accepted as an attempt to reclaim some semblance of control over his life after such a traumatising experience.
Most importantly, Harwyn's descent to life threatening situations would lead him to conflict with his older brother Harlan who after months of searching had developed an overprotective streak over his younger brother. This smothering love would become tinged with the belief that it was Harwyn's fault they lost their dear uncle and it would be better for their family if Harwyn would curb his recklessness.
To most it would seem that the brother's would finish and the fight would soon be over as the same had happened with every other conflict since their youth. However, the brothers would never get to reconcile and this fact would haunt Harwyn till the end of his life.
