Chapter 25: The Hands of Time and The Hatching
"This ends now, Samukai! Nope. Pretending this is the actual Samukai doesn't make cleaning up the museum any more interesting. This is so lame. We're ninja, not janitors." Jay grumbles as he carries a mannequin of Samurkai. Cinder just rolled his eyes at the blue ninja as he used his tail to sweep the floor. It has been a couple of days after the Day of the Departed and a few weeks since he's gotten his mom's jewelry. Right now the team was cleaning up the mess after Yang brought the enemies they defeated to fight them while the ghost sensei tried to regain his physical body.
"Come on, Jay. We're all kind of responsible for the damage to the museum. After all, if we hadn't had that massive battle on the Day of the Departed, this place would still be in one piece." Lloyd pointed out as passed by with the mannequin head of Chen on a cart.
"Yeah, and whose fault is that, Cole?" Jay accused looking at the black ninja, who was looking at Yang's portrait. Cinder sighed at the blue ninja. His brother did release the sensei by the weapon he used to bring them from the Departed Realm. But the tradeoff was well worth it as the Earth Ninja wasn't a ghost anymore. Unfortunately for the dragonet he couldn't help because his Uncle Ted and Aunt Marie were staying for the holiday and with his cousins Ali and Cindi wanting to see the sites of the city he had to stay and distract them from the ordeal (as well as hiding his draconian heritage).
"Okay! How many more times do I have to say "I'm sorry for accidentally unleashing the ghostly forces of evil that attacked Ninjago."?" Cole said warily as he placed the portrait in a nearby wheelbarrow.
"How high can you count?" Jay rebounded as he placed the Samukai head to a nearby box. Cole just groans and grabs the wheelbarrow handles, but his arms soon go into Earth Punch, making him let go. Something that he gained during the battle was a new move that allowed him to punch through anything with ease. But being human again was having trouble controlling it. Cinder had watched him use it and mimicked what he did and after a few days of training he was able to recreate what his brother could do but in a green glow instead of orange.
"Eh, speaking of which, you're still not used to having your old, non-ghost hands back?" Jay asked as he took the box with him as Cole's arms returned to normal and starts cleaning up the minor mess he made.
"Oh, I'm working on it." He saids and catches up to Jay as they come out to the main part of the museum as Nya struggles to carry a box. Cinder watched as she straighten her back after putting it and lay her head on top of it.
"This is exhausting. If I could go back in time, I'd tell Dr. Saunders we were too busy to help." She was exhausted as Zane came by pulling a cart with the mannequin of Cryptor's head.
"Nya, you may recall that the rest of us once time-traveled. It can have devastating effects, and should not be used lightly. Certainly not to get out of labor." He noted
"It's just an expression, Zane." The water ninja sad and walks over to Kai, with a painting in his hands.
"I... I don't believe it." He said astonished
"What is that?" Nya asked
"I think it's a portrait of... our parents!" He said excitedly and Nya looked at the back of it.
"Whoa. This dates to when I was, like, 3 years old." She said in surprise
"Shortly before they disappeared. We know so little about them, Nya." The fire ninja said softy
"Father was the Elemental Master of Fire. Mother was the Master of Water." Nya clarifies as she conjures a water ball.
"And they left us the old blacksmith shop and little else." Kai said slumped
"They left us our powers." Nya pointed out as they remembered what they have if their parents. Cinder whined at the scene with the two. He knew how they felt as he never got to see his biological parents before he hatched. But was happy for his foster family as it's not about blood but the ones you loved.
"Guys, look what I found!" Cole announced interrupting the moment between the two siblings. Nya lets her ball of water fall on the floor as everyone comes up to Cole, who is looking at a giant portrait.
"Uh, isn't that Garmadin?" Jay asked surprised
"It , that's your dad." Cole said, turning to the green ninja, who was coming up to them.
"And there's Master Wu." Kai said pointing at their teacher
"He looks so...young." Nya said
"Look at them, my father and my uncle, Ninjago's two greatest Elemental Masters. I wonder if I'll ever live up to their legacy." Lloyd said thoughtfully
"First Kai and Nya, now Lloyd. It's family picture day at the museum." Jay joked
"Does anyone recognize this battle?" Cole questions
"P.I.X.A.L., analyze." Zane said as his eyes glow slightly brighter as the former Android scanned the painting
"Facial contour mapping indicates this scene takes place forty years ago during the Serpentine Wars."
"During the Serpentine Wars?! But Ninjago was at peace. Who would they be fighting?" Cole exclaimed as then Dr. Saunders came in with a tray of drinks.
"Refreshing time. Hot, sweaty work deserves a cool drink." He said to everyone
"Ah, thanks, Dr. Saunders." Kai said taking one and the others each take a cup while Cole hands one to Nya and Cinder and starts drinking.
"Enjoy the pickled beet tea." Dr. Saunders says and the team spit it out, in disgust. While Cole said intentionally drops his, hitting his brothers as well,onto the ground.
"Uh... Oops! Hehe. New hands. So clumsy." He said sheepishly as Jay looked at each of them in disappointment before finishing his off. Cinder was flabbergasted but was happy not drinking the awful concoction.
"Eh." The ninja says and drinks his cup and finishes with a happy sigh "Mmm."
"What's this painting?" Lloyd questions and shows Dr. Saunders the painting after putting his cup back on the tray.
"Oh, this? Nothing. Minor skirmish. No historical significance. That is why I don't hang it in the main gallery." Dr. Saunders said nonchalantly
"It looks pretty significant to me. This thing is huge." Jay said, after putting his cup back on the tray.
"Yes, a huge myth. The folklore." The museum curator said as Zane puts his cup on the tray.
"Even if it is a myth, who are these men Masters Wu and Garmadon supposed to be fighting? I have no data on them."
The curator sighs
"There is a legend. Twin brothers called the "Hands of Time"." Dr. Saunders said as he put the tray down on a box nearby.
"The Hands of Time?" Kai said puzzled
"They could allegedly manipulate time itself. Speed it up, slow it down. All sorts of things. (Laughs) See what I mean? Manipulate time? A ridiculous fairy tale." Dr. Saunders chuckles
"Who's this one?" Nya points to the man on the right.
"Oh, this handsome-looking fella? Ha! The legend says his name is Krux." The curator said
"And who is the nasty-looking guy?" Lloyd points to the man on the left.
"In the stories, he's called Acronix." He saids

"Ahh…" Cinder sighed as they walked out of the museum. After the talk with Dr. Saunders with the painting the team continued on cleaning up the mess. They were able to put all the mannequins of their past enemies back in their places and other small items and artifacts to their spots too. The dragonet warbled as he stretched the muscles in his back as he helped with lifting things up into place as his brother was still clumsy with his hands. Now all he wanted to do was go home and rest from a hard day's work.
"6 p.m. Quitting time!" Kai said happily before suddenly a wave of energy came crashing. Cinder could see it as he and the others were fast forwarded from the museum to being on the Bounty. Alarms immediately went off as they were all confused with Jay falling down.
"What just happened? Time just…" Lloyd trailed off
"Moved forward?" Kai said, finishing the green ninja's sentence.
"Um, weren't we just outside? When did we get here?" Cole questioned and looked at his brother who look confused but wasn't affected by whatever happened.
"How did we get here?" Nya replied
"My circuits are picking up an energy displacement." Zane stated
"There was a displacement all right. It displaced us right in here." Kai said annoyed
"What is going on?" Lloyd demanded as Jay jumped up and covered his ears from the noise of the alarms.
"I don't know. But it's loud!"
"These energy readings are off the charts. Where is it coming from?" Nya said looking at the screens
"I'm trying to pinpoint the location." Zane replied
"How about pinpointing the location of the off button?! These alarms are giving me a… ...headache!" Jay said irritated sighs as Kai slams a nearby console, turning the alarm off
"Thank you." The blue ninja chuckled
"Hm. This is surprising." Zane noted
"No, it's not! I've always had sensitive ears and—" Jay gets cut off
"I meant, I think I know how we suddenly appeared on the Bounty." Zane analyzed
"How?" Cole questioned
"The displacement we experienced was not caused by just any normal energy. It was temporal energy." Zane remarked
"Oh, well, temporal energy. Of course. Everyone knows that's, um...powerful." Jay said with a stupid grin on his face. Cinder rolls his eyes while Kai scoffs.
"You have no idea what "temporal" means, do you?"
"I do not." Jay said abashed .
"It means "time."" Lloyd states
"Precisely. Whatever created that displacement can warp the very fabric of space-time." The White Ninja said
"Which is powerful, right?" Jay replied
"Very. All the normal rules of existence no longer apply to such a force." Zane said
"Told you it was powerful." Jay said smugly but then immediately sighed in annoyance and went to n a little rant while Zane has a plug in his head to the Bounty's system.
"Okay, yes, there was a little hiccup in time. But just one. I'm sure it was nothing. They probably happen all the time, and we don't realize it. You know, like déjà vu. Can we go home now?"
Everyone looks at Jay
"Seriously, we just cleaned up an entire museum! Aren't you guys tired?" He grouched
"Well…" Zane said and looked at the screen
"Well?" Nya looked at her boyfriend
"I've located the surge's epicenter." P.I.X.A.L. said
"Where, P.I.X.A.L.?" Zane asked and the screen showed the monastery before it was burnt down. Cinder warbled in confusion at this relevance.
"The old Monastery." She said
"The Monastery? That place totally burned down. Why would anyone or anything be up there?" Cole said puzzled
"We should find out." Lloyd said
"Oh, why? Cole's right, there's no reason for anyone to be up at the monastery. Zane's probably malfunctioning." Jay said, putting his hands up in the air.
"Self-diagnostic indicates negative." Zane stated and the blue ninja nudges him
"How about now?"
"No."
"I agree with Lloyd. We should go. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire." Kai noted
"And where there's massive energy displacement, there's usually trouble." Nya concluded
"Well, maybe it's, like, you know, a harmless massive energy displacement." Jay chuckles as everyone soon looks at him. "Come on. Seriously, I'm exhausted. We did our good deed for the day."
"Wait. Master Wu said he was going to the monastery. Something about "finishing an old fight." He said this was something he should do alone." Lloyd utter in remembrance and Jay sighs
"What are you waiting for? Get us to the monastery!" He declared and everyone immediately started moving to get the Bounty to fly. After a few seconds it immediately takes off. Cinder left the bridge and went on deck to practice but wanted some alone time to think over what he saw. But before he could he heard the fluttering of wings to see his uncle coming over, who seemed disoriented as the others.
"Kiddo? Did you feel that? Because I'm not the only one who just sped up like a bike."
"Uhh… yeah I felt it, but…" "
"But what?" Sparx asked and the dragonet sighed and explained how 2 years ago he learned how to control Time, a small amount of it, from Ignitus. Now a huge wave of Time Energy came through and he got to watch everything move super fast. His uncle understood and said he would be quiet, saying that the dragonet's father has that ability when going to stop the Ape King. Cinder hummed as the Bounty headed to the old monastery and calmed his mind for a fight that would be tough. While doing so the Bounty has left Ninjago City and towards the mountains in the northeast. After 30 minutes they reached the old monastery and Cinder looked at the place. It was a total wreck of what it used to be, with the only remains of it being the skeleton of the structure. As soon as the Bounty stopped everyone came out onto the deck and looked down below.
"Hey. Has anyone seen Master Wu?" Lloyd questioned
"Hm. I only see that guy." Jay said and pointed to a hooded man down below on the ground.
"Who's that?" Cole asked
"I don't know. Let's find out." Jay said
"No, no, wait, what if...?" Lloyd said but Jay kicks a button, letting the anchor lower as he hitches a ride on it towards the ground. Jay landed on the ground and stood in front of the hooded figure and spoke to them. The others watched.
"What's he doing?" The green ninja said as they watched the conversation but then the blue ninja brought out his nunchucks and into a fighting stance,
"Jay just pulled his nunchucks. Nya, you'd better get us down there fast." Lloyd said
"Not gonna work. There's not enough room down there." Nya states
"It's just one guy. I'm sure Jay can handle...uh, whoever that is." Cole said but Cinder mentally groaned.
"If they know what's going on then they should be worried."
"P.I.X.A.L..." Zane asked to the android within his head.
"Scanning. (scans Acronix) It appears to be…"
"Acronix!" Zane dashed
"Acronix? As in Acronix and Krux? The Hands of Time?" Cole said astonished
"From the painting? But Dr. Saunders says the battle wasn't real." Kai said puzzled
"Even if it was, it was forty years ago. Acronix would be an old man today, like Master Wu. But that guy down there is young." Lloyd notes
"But that's impossible! Unless...he time-traveled?" Nya said flabbergasted
"We have to get down there. Now!" Zane exclaimed and Nya went into the bridge and turned the wheel. Down on the ground, Jay charges at Acronix as he avoids his attack before they spar a bit before Jay puts away his nunchucks and fires a lightning bolt at Acronix, who uses the Time Blade to block it before he soon disappears as Jay fires another one, but misses. Acronix soon reappears behind Jay and strikes him, knocking him forward and into some rubble. The others eyes widened when they saw this as they slid down the anchor's chain but for Cinder his eyes narrowed as they landed on the ground.
"Did you see that? It's like…" Lloyd said flabbergasted
"He jumped forward in time." Kai finished as Cole arms glow
"Yeah? Let's see him jump this!" He said and fired a dirt shot near Acronix. He lands on the ground before charging at him with his glowing fists, but Acronix spins him around and throws him at the others, knocking them down. Cinder went over to part of the roof and watched, patiently waiting for the man to screw up. Then he heard something on the other side of the wall of the monastery and headed over there. While doing so he could hear the others doing Spinjitzu as they fought against Acronix.
As he scanned the area to see where it was coming from and looked down. There was Wu, struggling to hold onto a branch of a tree and nearly slips but quickly grabs hold of it again. Cinder squeaks in surprise at this and jumps off the wall and quickly glides to his teacher. Once there he stuck his tail out and gestured for him to grab on and the teacher did so. The dragonet sighed in relief.
"Are you ok?"
Wu nods his head but his body sagged as his age has caught up to him. The dragonet wanted to go help the others but stayed with Wu to make sure he's ok.
"Master Wu, what's going on? Why did that huge wave of Time Energy appear out of nowhere? As well as Acronix?"
Wu sighed
"I'd explain later. Right now we need to get the Time Blade he's holding."
"Time Blade?" Cinder asked, puzzled and Wu shook his head.
"You and the others need to get that blade."
Cinder hummed
"I see, but with that blade he's moving forward in time, but…" The dragonet smirked and Wu raised an eyebrow in curiosity.
"He's not the only one that can control Time."
Wu's eyes widened in surprise but the dragonet chuckled and said he'll explain later as well. Then he took off and back up to the monastery and landed on a roof silently and waited. He could smell burnt wood, telling the others were using their elemental powers to stop Acronix but failing. As he waited he felt a shockwave occurred and saw Acronix appear on the roof looking down at the ninja smugly but didn't see the dragonet who made his move. Using Dragon Time Cinder went towards the man and slammed into him and grabbed the blade from his hand. Then his forepaws began to glow a dark green with it going up his forelegs in a crack-like formation and punch the man, knocking him back and then ran back to his spot and resumed time around him. After that Acronix grabbed his stomach in pain and looked surprised as his hand was empty and then seeing the purple dragonet holding the Time Blade in his paws and face turned angry.
"What!? How did a dragon like you get my Time Blade!"
Cinder snorted and shot another earth flail at him, making the man dodge but Cinder swung his head to the right to let the flail hit the man. Causing Acronix to fall off the roof and land on the steps below outside the monastery. The man glared at the dragonet and then quickly left. Cinder sighed in relief but now looking at the blade he wonders what caused Acronix to come back?
"Bro!"
Cinder was brought out of his thoughts and turned to look at his brother on the floor. The dragonet warbled and hop off the roof and onto the ground. He padded over to the team, who were all getting up from the shockwave and looked at the dragonet.
"Cin! You got his weapon." Nya said, astonished
"How do you get it? That Acronix dude was playing with us like pins." Jay exclaimed
"Well I'll tell ya but I think Master Wu should explain." Cinder said, making everyone's eyes widened but the dragonet told them he's ok. So they left the monastery and walked down the steps to where Wu was at. He was sitting by the tree he was hanging on earlier, waiting for them as he rested.
"Master, are you alright?" Zane questioned, concerned
"I... fear not." Wu said as he stood up.
"Why was Acronix here?" Zane inquired
"How did he do that?" Kai asked
"Why were you fighting him?" Jay questioned
"There is much to tell you. And not much time." Wu said tirelessly

Wu sips his tea in his room in the temple. After the battle with Acronix they left the monastery and returned to the Temple of Airjitzu, which became their new home after Day of the Departed, which strangely was floating In the air.
"Ah. Another cup please, Misako." He said
"Okay, but drink it slower this time. Healing Tea doesn't work on a burnt tongue." Misako said but he drinks the tea. "Sip! You are quite impatient." She said firmly
"The same could be said of them." Wu said and looked at the six ninja impatiently waiting. Cinder however was drawing a drawing of the Time Blade.
"Okay, Master Wu, you've had your tea. Now can we talk?" Cole asked
"Ask any question you wish." Wu finished and the team each asked a question in rapid succession. After a weird question from Jay about his pudding but asked about Acronix.
"Well, to answer that, I must begin at the end. It was forty years ago, shortly after theSerpentine Wars. When I was a much younger man. As you know, we fought valiantly, but our enemies were strong, and our powers alone were not enough. It was the discovery of magic flutes that allowed us to finally defeat the Anacondrai. Their leaders were banished. And peace was returned to Ninjago."
"It is done, brother Garmadon." Wu said
"Indeed, Wu." Garmadon said with a smile
"Today, Ninjago is finally at peace. A great victory. And one we could not have achieved without each of you, the Elemental Masters. Smoke, Metal, Lightning, Shadow, Fire, Water, and Time!"
"Hold on a sec. So that guy at the monastery is an actual Elemental Master of Time?" Cole inquired
"No. Acronix was an Elemental Master of Time, like his brother, Krux." Wu said ans sips his tea. "After helping us win our hard-fought peace, they betrayed me, Garmadon, and the others. The so-called Hands of Time felt they controlled the most powerful Element, therefore entitling them to rule all of Ninjago."
"What did you do?" Nya inquired
"We had to stop them. And it would take all of us. Garmadon, myself, and every Elemental Master." Wu said
"Even our parents?" Kai noted
"Of course. Kai, Nya, your mother and father were great fighters, but it appeared even they had met their match. Acronix was a skilled warrior, one of the best I've ever seen, but his real power was his ability to control the forward movement of time. By sending himself forward, he was always ahead of the action, as if he had super speed. However, a slow progression can be just as dangerous. Different power, but equally effective. One Master of Time was bad enough, but like the hands on a clock, there were two. Krux's power was the opposite of his brother's. He could reverse time. It's a huge advantage in combat. Know your opponent's next move, know how to counter it. He could even control time to the point of halting it. Of course, he didn't halt himself." Wu imparts
"They're unbeatable, brother! How do we stop them?" Garmadon said worriedly
"I don't know. Time is the thread that sews the fabric of the universe." Wu sighs
"And it appears that they have all the needles." Garmadon noted
"Control time…" Acronix announced
"...control everything!" Krux finished and both of them laughed.
"We knew we had to prepare. Fearing that next time, we would not be so lucky." Wu concluded
The ninja absorbed Wu's explanations. Then Lloyd spoke up.
"You said the Hands of Time were unbeatable, yet you beat them. How?"
"The way one often defeats an enemy—by taking away their weapon." Wu said
"But their weapon was Time." Aane pointed out and Wu nodded
"Indeed."
"Are they done?" Garmadon asked
"They are." Wu replied
"Here they come!" Garmadon shouted
"Our only hope was four blades, hastily forged from Chronosteel...the Time Blades. Chronosteel is the only metal that can absorb Elemental Energy. Stripped of their powers, Acronix and Krux were just two ordinary men, easily subdued. But the ability to control time is too great for anyone to possess. Garmadon and I knew the Time Blades themselves were a threat that had to be eliminated. Forever. We created a temporal vortex to dispatch the Blades in time, where they would be lost to the ages. But Acronix and Krux refused to admit defeat. They thought they were more powerful than time itself." Wu explained
"So, what happened to them?" Cole questioned curious
"Krux disappeared into time itself, and I knew Acronix was going to return yesterday, so I waited. He was the remaining loose end to tie. Now he is no more." Wu said
"You mean, like, permanently?" Lloyd inquired
"Never my intent, but it was his fate. Now Acronix is gone forever, along with that Time Blade. It took four decades, but the Hands of Time will never again threaten Ninjago." Wu said as Misako helped him to a couch. Then he looks at Cinder.
"Before you all ask anything else, I'll like Cinder to answer me a question."
"Uh… of course Master. What is it?" Cinder replied
"You said that Acronux isn't the only one that can control time? What do you mean by that?" Wu inquired and the dragonet scratched the back of his head embarrassed. The dragonet, with Sparx's help, explained that apparently all Purple Dragons can control any element, including Time. But before this he has only a small portion of using it, particularly slowing time around him while he can move. But with touching the Time Blade he could feel the energy from it within, possibly allowing him to move forwards in time. Everyone was amazed by this and asked when this happened, which the dragonet told them. After that the others turned to Master Wu, but the elderly teacher had fallen asleep. Misako shuttled everyone out of his room. Cole turned to the others.
"Hey, I just realized...the mural we saw at the museum. That must be the battle Wu just told us about."
"But Dr. Saunders said the Hands of Time were a myth." Nya points out
"History is art, not science. Even an expert such as Dr. Saunders can be mistaken from time to time." Zane said and Cinder snorted
"Yeah, they would. But Dr. Saunders was acting odd when he's talking about it." He said and Jay laughs
"Ha! True that! Know how I know? 'Cause Acronix was a so-called myth, and we totally busted him! Haha!"
"Yeah! Hahaha! Except now, there's nothing to do." Kai said, now starting to get bored
"Hm. The temple still needs unpacking." Lloyd suggested and Cole sighs
"Lloyd's right."
"Ugh. Kinda wish we hadn't busted him. Hey, Nya. Wanna hang out?" Jay asked the water ninja as everyone began unpacking boxes

"That's why I camped out all night. I'd never miss a BorgStore product debut. BorgPad, BorgPod, I even bought the Cyrus PDA. I guess you could say I'm the company's Borg-est fan. Borg-est. Ha. Get it? Hahaha! Anyway, I'm pretty excited." Dareth laughs on video as the crowd cheers as Cyrus reveals himself.
After an hour of unpacking stuff in the temple the red ninja had rushed in and told everyone to come look at the tv. Making anymore paused in the unpacking to see what the red ninja wanted
"Not so long ago, if you wanted to tell time, you had to look to the sun, or a clock, or your wristwatch, or ask a friend. The point is, there had to be a better solution. Something merging advanced electronics. And there is. Today, I am proud to announce...that we are changing time itself. I present to you... the BorgWatch!" Cyrus announced but the crowd screamed and fled. "Uh, really not the reaction we were going for." A cameraman got a shot of a weird armored Serpentine Vermillion on footage.
"That was the scene just moments ago in downtown Ninjago, where the launch of the new BorgWatch was tragically marred by a samurai." The video pauses. Cole turned to the red ninja with his arms crossed
"Well, Kai? You said there was nothing left to do…"
"And Ninja-ing certainly beats unpacking. Heh, actually, anything beats unpacking." Jay argued
"Yeah, too bad there's only one samurai. They don't really need all of us." Lloyd said
"So, how do we decide who gets to deal with this?" Kai questioned
"I suggest randomly assigning each of ourselves a digit, then manually engaging a cube with graphical representations of each number to make a random, unbiased selection. Roll a dice." Zane suggested
"Yeah. Or...we could just see who gets there first!" Nya declares
"Race ya!" The six ninja said as they left the Temple. Misako came out and shook her head when she saw them leave. Then she hears grunting in the dining room of the temple. Walking over to it she sees Cinder trying to lift a heavy piece of furniture on his own, his uncle sitting on top of it watching him. The archaeologist shook her head but before she could move he disappeared in a flash of green energy and seconds later appeared with the furniture on the floor. Cinder was panting from it while his uncle saw her enter. The dragonet noticed this and sat down on his haunches.
"Hi Misako."
"Hello Cinder, Sparx. Where did the other ninja go?" She asked
Cinder shrugged his shoulders as his uncle fluttered onto his left horn.
"Hmm… alright, but what were you doing? And also, what was that green energy you used? Didn't look like my son's power."
"Oh..." Cinder whines in embarrassment and brings out the Fast-Forward Time Blade, explaining he's practicing on his Dragon Time with feeling how the energy in the blade works. Just in case the blade gets taken by Acronix. His uncle was watching him practice, well watching him struggle with unpacking stuff while practicing. After talking to her the dragonet went to hide it so that nobody could find it. Then after hiding it he's going outside to practice his elemental breaths.
