Chapter 22: Final Judgement
With a synchronized shriek that shook the heavens, the rejuvenated Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres turned their burning gazes toward the battered remnants of Team Rocket's forces.
Butch, his once-confident smirk nowhere to be seen, stumbled backward as the main monitor displayed the three Legendary Birds circling overhead their respective islands, their eyes blazing with divine fury.
A deafening roar filled the air. Then, the sky erupted.
Jagged shards of ice rained from above, impaling airships with brutal precision. Thunder split the heavens, sending arcs of electricity dancing across helpless hulls, frying circuits, and igniting fuel lines. Moltres spread its wings, unleashing a storm of fire that turned anything it touched into a funeral pyre.
The airships, their once-mighty cannons depleted of ammunition, were nothing more than floating husks in the sky. One after another, they fell, crashing into the ocean like dying stars, their fiery wreckage sinking beneath the waves.
"R-retreat!" Butch screamed, his voice cracking under sheer panic.
But there was nowhere to run.
The Legendary Birds spared nothing—not weapons, not ships, not bases. There was no negotiating. No mercy. No escape.
Yet, amid the destruction, Lugia still tried to save lives.
Diving through the chaos, it spread its wings wide, sending protective barriers shimmering across the sky, shielding those with no chance of escape. It carried those it could to safety, its actions a stark contrast to the merciless wrath of the other Legends.
As Lugia soared above the battlefield, its sharp eyes caught sight of a black ship approaching from the direction of Shamouti Island.
It bore the same red 'R' as the fallen airships.
A surviving Team Rocket vessel.
Lugia didn't hesitate.
It surged forward, not to stop them from aiding their fallen troops, but to save them from the same fate.
The Legendary Birds would show no mercy to any remaining members of Team Rocket. This ship was heading straight into a massacre.
Lugia would not let that happen.
Inside the black ship, Cassidy's fingers curled into fists, nails digging into her palms. Her breaths came in shallow gasps as she stared at the monitors, watching everything burn. The weight of it all settled onto her chest, pressing down until she could barely breathe.
Total destruction.
Not a single one of Butch's troops was responding. Their airships—gone. Their forces on the Elemental Islands—wiped out.
Even Butch himself was silent.
Cassidy's mind raced back to her first mission with Butch—their shared victories, their near escapes, their rise through the ranks. All of it, gone in an instant, buried beneath the rubble of failed ambition.
Her trembling fingers darted across the control panel. No response. No signal. No voice.
"Butch…?" she whispered.
Nothing.
Dr. Namba? Missing. His last location had been somewhere in Shamouti, but there was no way to search for him now. He and the others still on the island would be left to their fates. They were as good as caught.
Cassidy's chest tightened as she gritted her teeth. This mission was over.
They had to retreat.
But… where?
Kanto was no longer an option. They had pulled everything from there for this operation. There was nothing left to return to.
That left only Johto.
The Johto branch was smaller than Kanto's, but it could house a few dozen extra members. It was their only choice.
She took a shaky breath and turned to give the order—
The ship's alarms blared.
A massive object was approaching fast.
Cassidy's stomach dropped.
The monitors flashed white.
BOOM!
An explosion rocked the ship as Lugia's Aeroblast tore through the communication array, the radar, the sensors—everything.
Sparks rained down from shattered control panels. The cabin filled with the acrid scent of burning circuits.
"We've lost communications!" someone shouted.
"The ship—it's not responding!"
Cassidy barely had time to register the words before the ship lurched violently.
Lugia had vanished beneath the waves.
For a brief, haunting second, the sea was calm.
Then—
A crushing impact from below.
A powerful shockwave shredded the propellers, sending the ship into a dead drift. The engines sputtered once… and died.
Silence.
Cassidy fell to her knees.
She stared blankly at the cracked monitor, her mind racing.
They were stranded.
They had no way to run. No way to fight. No way to even call for help.
The irony of it all almost made her laugh.
But the despair was greater.
The proud woman who had once carried out some of Team Rocket's most dangerous missions was gone.
All that remained was a broken person with no future.
…No.
She still had a future.
A future in jail.
She let out a slow, shaky breath.
There was no point in fighting anymore.
The people of Shamouti had definitely called for help. The National Police were on their way.
It was over.
Cassidy lowered her head.
Her subordinates, seeing her broken form, felt their own resolve crumble.
One by one, they accepted the inevitable.
There would be no more escape.
All that was left was to wait.
:・゚(ꈍᴗꈍ)・゚:
The morning breeze was refreshing, carrying the salty scent of the ocean as Ash and his friends gazed over the now peaceful Elemental Islands. The chaos of the last night was gone, leaving behind nothing but tranquil beauty.
Ash stretched his arms, breathing in deeply. "Man, this place is amazing now that everything's calmed down."
Melody grinned. "It's kinda hard to believe we were in the middle of chaos just hours ago."
Serena nodded. "Yeah… if we hadn't seen it ourselves, I'd think it was just a dream."
Chloe, ever practical, suggested. "We should probably head back to town and look for Miss Chrysa and the others."
Before anyone could respond, a shadow suddenly loomed over them.
The group turned—and froze.
A massive figure hovered above them, blocking the sunlight.
Lugia.
The Water's Great Guardian floated gracefully in the air, its massive wings barely moving. The morning light reflected off its sleek silver body, and its deep blue eyes regarded them with an unreadable expression.
Awe filled the group.
Goh and Gary immediately searched their pockets, hands patting their clothes desperately.
"My phone—" Goh muttered.
Gary groaned. "We must've lost them in the chaos…"
The once-in-a-lifetime moment, and they had no way to capture it.
But that thought quickly faded as Lugia spoke. Like Slowking before, its voice didn't pass through the air—it resonated directly in their minds. "May I ask who of you is the Chosen One and the Song Maiden?"
Lugia observed the group, its ancient gaze passing over them, as if seeing something beyond the physical world. "I wish to thank them properly for their help."
Melody stepped forward first, placing a hand on her chest. "I am the Song Maiden. My name is Melody." She bowed her head respectfully. Then, she turned slightly—her eyes flickered toward Ash for just a moment. Then, finally, she gestured toward Gary. "And this is the Chosen One, Gary."
Gary hesitated, his usual cocky confidence suddenly absent. Sure, he was known for boasting about his achievements. But this? This was not something he could claim for himself. Gary met Lugia's gaze, his voice steady and honest.
"I only found the treasures," he admitted. "And I only carried them halfway." His eyes turned to the three girls who had stepped up when it mattered most. "Dawn, Chloe, and Serena were the ones who took responsibility and placed them on the altar."
The group exchanged glances, surprised by Gary's humility. Ash, however, just smiled knowingly. He had always known this about Gary. For all his arrogance, he never took credit for something he didn't earn.
Then, Goh stepped forward, placing a hand on Ash's shoulder. "And this is Ash." Goh gave him a small push, making Ash take an awkward step forward and blink in confusion. "He fought harder than anyone to open the opportunity for this to succeed," Goh continued. "I'm Goh. I witnessed it all."
Ash chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. If they were doing this, he wasn't leaving anyone out. "And this is Pikachu," Ash said, motioning to his partner, who perked up proudly. "He was the real force behind us."
Slowking smiled, now fully understanding the bigger picture.
Lugia, however, remained silent for a long moment. Its piercing gaze studied them one by one, as if seeing through them. It could see their aura, the essence of their life force tied to their very own being.
Gary radiated Honest Confidence.
Dawn shone with Selflessness.
Chloe was blooming with Courage.
Serena gleamed with Decisiveness.
Melody was beaming with a Sense of Purpose.
Goh emitted Accurate Observation.
But when Lugia looked at Ash, it saw something different. Not just courage, or determination, or selflessness—it saw the force that moved people, that made the impossible possible. A will unbound by prophecy. Something beyond fate.
Unlike the others, Ash did not have a singular defining trait.
Instead, he possessed them all.
Greater than any of them.
Lugia did not know what to say.
Thankfully, it was saved by the sudden arrival of the Legendary Birds. The three circled the sky, their cries echoing across the island before landing atop their respective totems.
"They are thanking you," Slowking explained.
Zapdos ruffled its feathers, sending tiny sparks crackling through the air. Dawn, once terrified of Electric-types, stepped forward without hesitation. "Don't worry about it!" she grinned, waving to Zapdos.
Moltres's flames flickered warmly as Chloe smiled up at it. "We just did what was right."
Serena gazed at Articuno's icy form in admiration. "We should be the ones thanking you."
Then—something unexpected happened.
The three birds suddenly glowed—Zapdos in golden light, Moltres in fiery red, and Articuno in icy blue. A moment later, they soared into the sky, their cries ringing across the ocean. With one final look back, they turned toward their respective islands, streaking through the sky before vanishing into the distance.
Lugia finally turned back to the group.
"I see now," it said, its voice filled with deep understanding.
"Gary the Treasure Hunter. Dawn, Chloe, and Serena—the Treasure Maidens. Goh the Observer."
Lugia paused as it gazed at Ash, it saw the spark of potential that defied destiny—a light that could guide others through the darkest storms, unyielding and boundless.
"And Ash… the Catalyst."
"Together, I recognize you all as the Chosen Ones. Along with Melody, the Song Maiden, I thank you all for your help."
The group processed their newly given titles.
Gary folded his arms, smirking slightly. "Treasure Hunter, huh? I kinda like the sound of that."
Dawn tilted her head. "Treasure Maiden sounds… fancy?"
Serena nodded. "It's got a nice ring to it."
Goh sighed dramatically. "I just get 'Observer'? Seriously? I did way more than just watch!"
Chloe laughed. "I think it suits you."
Ash liked the idea. The decisions and actions he had made throughout the night were his own choices. He was the one who had chosen for himself rather than being chosen by others. He saw the title The Catalyst not as a prophecy of what he was destined to do, but as recognition of what he had already decided and accomplished.
Lugia nodded at Slowking. "Nice to see you again, still well, old friend."
Using its psychic power, Lugia plucked a single silver feather from its wing and levitated it toward Slowking.
Slowking accepted it with a small smile. "You are as kind as ever, my friend," he said, referring to Lugia's effort to save some Team Rocket members from the Legendary Birds' justified wrath.
"Thank you, Lugia!" Goh called out. The others followed, voices filled with gratitude.
"Farewell," Lugia said as it spread its wings. A powerful gust of wind swept through the area as it ascended, its body arching into the sky before diving into the ocean.
With a final bursting splash, it disappeared beneath the waves.
Slowking turned back to the group, his wise gaze calm.
"Thank you, Chosen Ones," he said, his eyes lingering on the sea. "You may now return to your friends and family. I wish you well as you continue moving forward. Oh, and Melody, take the treasures. Return them to the head town elder."
Slowking used its psychic abilities on the now dull-looking island treasures, making them levitate from the altar before gently placing them in Melody's arms. Noticing the worried looks on the humans' faces at the seemingly powerless and drained spheres, he continued, "Their energy will slowly recharge by absorbing natural energy."
"Also," Slowking added. Using the same psychic-assisted method, he handed Melody the silver feather given to him by Lugia. "That's Lugia's feather. It's called a Silver Wing. Take it as a gift."
The group stared in awe; the shining feather was a sight to behold.
Melody was surprised, doubting if she was deserving of such a gift. If there was one person who deserved it, it would be… Before she could protest, the tourists began their chatter.
Ash grinned. "We'll visit again someday, right guys?"
Chloe smirked. "And girls."
The group chuckled.
Gary sighed. "I just hope next time is trouble-free."
Goh stretched. "Good thing we still have today and tomorrow to enjoy our vacation."
Dawn chuckled. "They became friends real fast, huh?"
Serena smiled. "At least that's one less headache."
As the group disappeared into the forest, their laughter and chatter fading into the distance, Slowking remained still.
His glowing blue eyes followed Ash's retreating form.
Then, Slowking turned toward the altar and walked closer. He traced the worn tablet with a thoughtful hand, the ancient words burning in his mind
Disturb not the guardians of Fire, Lightning, and Ice,
Lest destruction consume the land, sea, and skies.
The world shall tremble beneath their cries,
Though the Water's Great Guardian shall rise.
But alone, its strength will not suffice,
And chaos shall shatter paradise.
Even the heavens shall crash,
Thus, the earth will turn to...
:・゚(ꈍᴗꈍ)・゚:
Tobias stood in the village plaza, his presence commanding attention as he issued instructions to a few villagers. Around him, others were hard at work, repairing the homes and structures that had been ravaged by Team Rocket and the recent calamity. His voice was steady, guiding the recovery efforts. But as he looked up, his expression softened with recognition.
"The Chosen One has returned!" he announced with joy, his voice carrying across the plaza.
At his words, the villagers stopped what they were doing, turning to face the approaching group. Some eyes focused on Gary, recalling that he had been anointed as the Chosen One for the festival, while others turned to Ash, remembering him as the brave boy with the Pikachu who had faced Cassidy's Dragonite and helped restore hope.
The crowd cheered, their gratitude palpable as they clapped and smiled, welcoming the group.
Gary stepped forward. "It was a group effort. We all did our part."
Melody nodded, a proud smile on her face. "We met Lugia. It called them the Chosen Ones," she said, gesturing to the group. "As a group."
Tobias hesitated, a bit unsure of the difference between what Melody said compared to village's prophecy. He did not let that stop him and lifted his voice to be heard. "Thanks to all of you, then," he said, his tone grand, as if the weight of the prophecy lingered in the air. "Despite the chaos, this year's festival has concluded. But this time, it was the fulfillment of the prophecy. Chaos may have ravaged our land, but the Chosen Ones gathered the island treasures, the Song Maiden guided their power with her song, and Lugia has restored peace to our region!"
The villagers cheered once more, their voices rising in a triumphant chorus.
"Now, we may not be able to celebrate with the usual festivities. We have much to rebuild and many to tend to. But do not lose hope! Our town now basks under a brighter future!" Tobias declared, raising his hand in a grand gesture.
Ash couldn't help but admire Tobias's flair for inspiring the crowd. The energy was contagious.
From the dispersing crowd, Melody's mother and older sister appeared, wrapping her in a warm hug.
It was then that Chrysa made her presence known. With a beaming smile, she surprised her students by pulling Dawn, Chloe, and Serena into a big hug.
"I'm so glad you're all safe! I was so worried!" Chrysa exclaimed, her voice full of relief.
The three girls relaxed into the embrace, smiling in return. They had made it through together.
After a moment, Chrysa let them go, giving them space to breathe. She then turned her attention to the rest of the group, her smile widening as she met the eyes of Gary, Goh, and Ash. "And you too, boys," she added with a grin, her gaze lingering on Pikachu. "That's one cute Pikachu you've got there, Ash."
"Pikachu!" the electric rodent squeaked, standing proudly on Ash's shoulder as the boy gave a small, awkward smile. He couldn't hide his partner's presence, not after all the attention they'd garnered.
"Uh… yeah, he is," Ash stammered, scratching the back of his head.
Chrysa chuckled, her warmth contagious. "We'll talk about it later. For now, let's get back to the hotel. We all need to eat and rest. Call your families and let them know you're safe. The news of what happened here has probably already reached them."
Her students nodded in agreement, following their teacher as she led the way back to the hotel. But one question lingered in the air.
Goh, ever the curious one, couldn't help but voice it. "We're still staying for our vacation, right?"
Chrysa's smile widened, a playful glint in her eye. "I'll tell you if Ash beats me," she said, reaching for her Psyduck's Pokéball.
The students chuckled, realizing that the line was a callback to Ash's response to Cassidy's question.
Ash, energized by the challenge, grinned. "Bring it on!"
"Pikachu!" Pikachu added, his voice full of excitement as he pumped his tiny fists.
With that, the group continued on their way, the mood light and full of laughter, their spirits lifted by the experience they'd shared—and the adventures still to come.

The time had come for the class to depart. The warm morning sun bathed the docks in golden light, casting long shadows as the students stood in the lobby of the port, chatting and laughing as they waited for their turn to board. The hustle and bustle of farewells filled the air, but there was an unspoken sense of finality lingering with every passing moment.
"Class, line up. We are about to board," Ms. Chrysa's voice rang out, firm yet gentle. Her students quickly organized themselves.
"Will we see each other again?" a voice asked, quiet but filled with hope. Ash turned, surprised to find Melody standing a few steps behind him, her gaze uncertain.
He paused, then flashed his characteristic reassuring smile. "Of course we will. I don't see why not."
Melody's face, once clouded with doubt, brightened instantly. A shy smile curved her lips, the same smile Ash had only seen in the past few days, yet it felt as if they'd known each other far longer. "Right. See you again someday, Ash."
Ash's expression softened, a thought suddenly crossing his mind. "So… what happens now? You still planning to leave the island to study?"
Melody hesitated for a moment, her eyes shifting as if weighing the decision in her mind. "I think I'll stay for a little while longer, actually. But I'll have to talk it over with my family before the next school year starts." She reached into her bag and pulled out a small, intricately decorated box. "I… I wanted to give you something. A token of appreciation. I don't think I can ever thank you enough for everything you did for this region. For me."
Ash felt warmth spread across his cheeks, a mix of embarrassment and gratitude. "Hey, we did it together. It wasn't just me. It was all of us— the power of 'us,' right?"
Melody nodded, her smile growing even more genuine. Despite her words, Ash could see the sincerity behind them. She handed him the box, and he accepted it, feeling its weight, though it was light.
"I hope I'll be able to give you something too when we see each other again," Ash said, his voice filled with conviction.
"I'll hold you to that," Melody replied, her voice soft, yet steady.
Before Ash could respond, Ms. Chrysa's call broke through their conversation. "Ash, it's time to go!"
Ash chuckled, shaking his head. "Well, this is it." He turned back to Melody, giving her a final, heartfelt smile. "Goodbye… for now, Melody."
Melody's expression softened, her eyes lingering on Ash. "Yeah… goodbye, Ash."
The two exchanged a brief but meaningful wave before Ash turned to join the others in line.
As the class boarded the ship, Ash tucked Melody's gift into his pocket, knowing that it would be a reminder of their shared trials and everything they had experienced together. The ship slowly pulled away from the dock, the sound of its engines cutting through the air as it started its journey back to Kanto.
Melody stood on the dock, watching the ship grow smaller in the distance. Her fingers gently brushed the surface of the ocarina she held, and without thinking, she began to play. The soft melody drifted out into the air, mixing with the quiet sounds of the waves and the Wingulls overhead. It was as though the music itself was carrying her thoughts, her hopes, and her feelings far beyond the horizon.
The sun bathed her in its warm glow as she stood there, the soft notes of the ocarina rising and falling with the rhythm of the ocean. She didn't know when, but she knew one thing for sure— this was not the end. Their paths would cross again.
And when they did, she would be ready.
