Mason Lockwood was in the middle of an important phone call when he heard a knock on his office door. After ending his conversation, he sat up straight. "It's open," he called out, picking up his glass of whiskey and taking a drink.
Setting his glass down, Mason looks up when he sees his office door opening and sees his assistant, Katherine Pierce, standing by his door. "Is there something I can help you with, Ms. Pierce?"
"Mr. Salvatore is here to see you," Katherine said as she opened the door, revealing Damon Salvatore standing behind her.
Seeing Damon standing behind his assistant, Mason nodded his head, letting him know that Damon could come into his office. "Well, this is a pleasant surprise. What can I do for you, Mr. Salvatore?" Mason asked as soon as Katherine closed the door.
"Well, you can start by telling me why your client is still refusing to sign the divorce papers," Damon said as he sat down in front of Mason's desk and got straight to the point of why he was there.
"Sure, I told him not to," Mason said with a shrug as he took a drink of his whiskey.
"You told him not to sign them? Is there a reason why you would have done that?"
Mason sighs. "Because your client is just trying to get back at my client. She's playing the victim just like she always does, so instead of taking responsibility for her actions, she serves my client with divorce papers."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
" Two years ago, Tyler caught his wife in bed with another man and since then, she's been denying it acting like he was the who cheated and not her."
Damon furrowed his eyebrows as he listened to what Mason was saying but didn't believe it. "You're lying, and I'm going to prove it. Have your client sign the divorce papers by the end of the week, Lockwood," Damon said, getting up from the chair he had been sitting in. He was about to walk out of Mason's office when Mason spoke up.
"Hey Salvatore, I might be lying, but if I were you, I would ask your client about what happened two years ago. I'm just saying." Mason said as he shrugged his shoulders slightly, leaned back against his chair, and chuckled softly, watching Damon walk out of his office.
Elena was visiting Bonnie and Stefan, and their three-year-old daughter Emily. Elena usually works on Fridays, but since she had been dealing with Tyler and the divorce situation, she wasn't in the mood to be at the bookstore today. So April said that she would handle everything, and if she needed Elena for anything, April would call her.
"So, what's going on with the divorce? Has Tyler signed the papers yet?" Bonnie asked as she took a drink of her coffee and set her cup down on the coffee table.
Elena snorted as she shook her head. "No, Damon was supposed to have a copy of the divorce papers on his desk once Tyler signed them. But since Tyler has been refusing to sign it, Damon had no choice but to talk to Tyler's lawyer."
"Who's Tyler's lawyer?" Stefan asked.
"His uncle Mason," Elena said, rolling her eyes. Elena remembered the first time she met Tyler's uncle, and let's just say she never really liked him. Elena thought Mason was rude and an obnoxious asshole. But of course, Elena also thought Tyler's dad was an asshole the first time she met Tyler's parents. Tyler's mom, Carol, was the only one Elena actually got along with.
"Why is Tyler dragging this out? Is he trying to get back at you or something?"
Elena shrugged. "Probably, but I don't understand why. I'm not the one who cheated and lied about it."
"Did Damon say anything about what he's going to do with the eviction notice?" Stefan asked, remembering that Elena mentioned it to Bonnie earlier.
He said he'll take care of it. But I have no idea what that means exactly. Elena has no clue what's going to happen with her bookstore since it's only been a few days since she got the eviction notice. She hasn't even confronted Tyler about it.
Just then, Elena felt her cell phone vibrating in her back pocket. Pulling it out, she noticed Damon was calling her. She felt Bonnie and Stefan staring at her. Elena sighed deeply as she got up from the couch and walked into their kitchen to talk to Damon privately.
"Damon, what happened with Tyler's lawyer? Is he going to get Tyler to sign the divorce papers?" Elena asked as soon as she answered her phone.
" Not quite yet, but I'm working on it. Can you come to my office?"
"Why? Damon, what's going on?" Elena asked, as she couldn't help but get the feeling that Damon was acting kind of weird all of a sudden.
"Just come to my office, Elena, and I will explain everything." was all Damon said as he hung up before Elena could ask more questions.
"Is everything okay?" Bonnie asked as she walked into the kitchen a moment later.
"That was Damon. He wants me to come to his office," Elena said, still staring at her phone.
"Why?"
Elena shook her head as she placed her phone back into her pocket. "I don't know. But I gotta go. I'll see you guys later," she said as she walked past Bonnie and quickly said goodbye to Stefan as she walked out of their front door.
"What was that all about?" Stefan asked, looking over at Bonnie.
"I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with Damon," Bonnie answered as she sat down on the couch next to Stefan and rested her head against his shoulder.
Elena spent the next ten minutes pacing back and forth across Damon's floor, unable to believe that Tyler would actually lie about something like that. She also couldn't believe that Damon would even question her about what happened two years ago.
Damon sat there quietly as he watched Elena walk back and forth across his floor. As soon as Elena walked into his office, Damon started asking her questions about what happened two years ago. Of course, he didn't plan on asking right away. But he had to know if what Mason told him was true.
Elena stopped pacing as she crossed her arms across her chest and looked at Damon. "You don't actually believe him, do you?" She asked.
"It's Mason Lockwood. The guy is a douche, so no, I don't believe him. But for some reason, he seems to believe Tyler, and Tyler is his nephew. Look, why don't you tell me what happened two years ago?" Damon said, wanting to hear Elena's side.
Elena heaved a sigh, dropped her hands to her sides, and sat down, starting to tell him what had happened two years ago. "It was New Year's Eve, and Tyler's company had a huge New Year's Eve party. Well, as I was looking for Tyler after using the restroom, I found him flirting with Vicki Donovan. Even back then, I had a feeling something was going on between them."
"What happened next?"
Elena blew out a breath as she continued. "I walked out of the party and was about to walk home. But Tyler's friend and coworker Marcel offered to drive me home. Marcel did offer to stay with me until Tyler came home, but I turned down his offer."
"Then, if nothing happened between you and this other man, why is Tyler accusing you of cheating and claiming that he caught you in bed with this person?" Damon asked, trying to make sense of all of this.
"Because the next morning when Tyler wasn't home, Marcel came over to check on me. I know that this looks bad. But I'm telling you nothing happened between me and Marcel. We just talked, nothing more."
Damon nods his head a little. "What happened after Marcel left?"
"Well, Tyler started to accuse me of cheating and automatically assumed that I was going to sleep with him. We of course got into a huge argument about it. I left and stayed with my Aunt and Uncle for a few days, until Tyler finally cooled down."
"How long have you suspected Tyler's affair with his secretary?"
Elena sighs deeply for a moment. "Ever since I caught him flirting with her. But I didn't catch them in the act until a month ago." Elena always knew about the affair, but she was kind of hoping that it was all just a dream and that it wasn't real. Elena never really wanted to believe that Tyler would actually hurt her, especially after ten years of marriage.
As Damon sat there listening to Elena's side of the story, he couldn't help but feel bad for Elena. Elena deserves so much more than Tyler Lockwood, and Damon would love more than anything to wrap his arms around her and just hold her. He would do anything to show her that she deserves better. But as her lawyer, he can't. Maybe after her divorce is done, he can ask her out for dinner.
Opening his desk drawer, Damon pulled out an envelope full of cash and handed it over to Elena. "I want you to have this."
Elena takes the envelope from Damon and opens it to see what's inside. She then gasps in surprise at how much money is in it. "Damon, I can't accept this," she says as she tries to give it back to him.
Damon brought his hand up and shook his head, as he wasn't going to take the money back. "It's for your bookstore, Elena. I want you to have the money. I told you that I was going to find a way for you to keep your bookstore, and I found it."
Elena looks down at the money, nods her head, and looks up at Damon. "Thank you, Damon. I will make sure to pay you back." Elena doesn't know exactly how she's going to pay Damon back, but she'll think of something. It's the least she could do.
