Searching in the City Size Grave

Team RWWBY boarded the Bullhead with Oobleck flying off to their destination for their first mission after saying their goodbyes to their friends, and Wolverine looks down seeing that there appears to be a little less trees.

"So, you've really been assigned to have us shadow you?" Wolverine asked.

"Why, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you're all quite shock of me coming on this adventure." Oobleck said.

"I guess I just never saw you as much of a fighter." Yang confessed a bit.

"I admit I fancy myself more of an intellectual, but I can assure you, as a Huntsman, I've had my fair share of tussles." Oobleck stated, standing proudly.

"Like the mushrooms?" Ruby asked titling her head in confusion.

"Those are truffles." Blake corrected her short leader.

"Like the sprout?" Ruby asked again, feeling a bit more confused.

"Those are Brussels." Yang mentioned.

"Can we not talk about food right now? I rather stay focus on what we're coming out here for before even thinking about what's for dinner." Wolverine complained a little.

"Right." Oobleck agreed and let out a soft cough.

"Besides, given my expertise in the field of history as well as my dabblings in the archaeological surveys, our dear headmaster saw fit to assign me to this particular... assignment!" Oobleck explained the purpose of this mission.

"What does history have to do with this?" Weiss asked, and Oobleck zooms close to her.

"Why, what a preposterous question, you silly girl! Why, history is the backbone of our very society! And the liver! Probably the kidneys, if I were to wager." Oobleck stated which only confuses Weiss.

"In English, Mr. Speedy of History?" Wolverine asked with a little nickname for teasing.

"The southeast quadrant outside of Vale is home to wild forests and deep caves, but it is also the location to one of the kingdom's greatest failures!" Oobleck pointed out where they're going in the southeast.

"Mountain Glenn." Ruby figured out.

"Mountain Glenn? Wasn't that the mountain Vale tried to expand itself to that area?" Wolverine asked, seems to remember learning about that during his travels.

"That's right! It was an expansion of Vale... but in the end it was overrun by Grimm and fenced off from the rest of the city." Yang answered and look sad about the most tragic history of the Vale Kingdom.

"Correct! And now it stands abandoned as a dark reminder." Oobleck nodded.

"And a likely place for a hideout." Blake believed, hoping to find the White Fang there.

"Precisely." Oobleck said, adjusting his glasses.

Wolverine look in the direction the Bullhead is going in thinking about going to a place that used to be a city for the Vale Kingdom, but also know that so many lives were lost because of the Grimm and now he and his team are heading there to find the White Fang.

He doesn't know why though, but he gets the strangest feeling that he's been there before yet he can't remember a single thing going there in the past.

Later, the Bullhead arrived at the center of the abandoned and ruined city of Mount Glenn as everyone jumps off with their weapons out, except for Oobleck who just has his coffee canister.

"(Just how much coffee does that guy drink?)" Wolverine thought wondered on the history teacher.

"Gentleman! Ladies! You still may be students, but as of this moment, your first mission as Huntsman and Huntresses has begun! From this point forward, you need to do exactly as I say! Do you understand?" Oobleck laid out some ground rules as they nodded.

But then Oobleck turns to Ruby when he spotted her wearing her backpack.

"Ruby! I thought I told you to leave all of your bags back at school." Oobleck said.

"But, uh, you hadn't told us to listen to you yet. So, I didn't." Ruby tried to make up an excuse, Wolverine can tell that she doesn't want to leave her backpack behind for some reason.

But he notices another scent from Ruby, no, more like it's coming from something on Ruby.

"She's not wrong." Oobleck said to himself before turning back to Ruby.

"Very well, Ruby; leave your bag here, we can pick it up upon our return." Oobleck ordered.

"But I, well uh—" Ruby hesitated to do so and clench onto her backpack as Wolverine moves behind her.

"Young lady, what in the world could you possibly have in that bag that could be so important to bring it with..." Oobleck stopped when Wolverine open the backpack and Zwei pops out.

Everyone became silent of shock upon seeing the reason why Ruby couldn't part herself from the backpack, and Zwei just goes up to lick Wolverine's face as he is happy to see him again.

"Get back in the bag." Ruby whispered to Zwei who just merely barks in respond.

"We're here to investigate an abandoned urban jungle teeming with death and hostility, and you brought... a dog?" Oobleck asked, narrowing his eyes at the girl.

Ruby tries to come up with a good explanation that she didn't want to leave Zwei alone in team RWWBY's room for the entire week, but she never got the chance to even think of one from what Oobleck did next.

"Genius!" Oobleck suddenly pulled Zwei out of the backpack and spins around holding him up.

"Canines are historically known for their perceptive nose and heightened sense of sound, making them excellent companions for a hunt such as ours!" Oobleck bragged happily while Zwei barks happily.

"I'm a genius." Ruby grinned, but Yang and Weiss facepalm this while Wolverine just shook his head thinking she just got lucky of not getting punish.

"So, what are your orders, Doctor?" Blake asked, wanting to get this mission started.

"Ah, yes, straight to the chase; I like it!" Oobleck smirked, suddenly let go of Zewi and drop to the ground. The history started to look serious.

"As you've been informed, the southeast area has been marked as a recent hot spot for Grimm activity. Now, there are several possible explanations for this behavior, one of which being... Grimm." Oobleck said looking a bit spook.

"What?" Ruby and Wolverine confused on that last part.

"Grimm. A creature of Grimm approximately one hundred yards from us at this very moment." Oobleck alerted the team.

"What?!" Yang gasped.

Everyone turns around to see a lone Beowulf wandering into the street trying to sniff out anything to hunt and kill, the team were about to go attack it.

"Stop!" Oobleck said softly which confuses team RWWBY.

"There are a number of reasons why Grimm will congregate in this particular area, the most likely of which will be their attraction to negativity: sadness, envy, loneliness, hatred. All qualities that are likely held by our hidden group harboring ill intent." Oobleck explained one of the main reasons Grimm attacks people.

"So, what now?" Ruby asked since they aren't going to attack the Grimm.

"We wait. We track. If this specimen leads us to its pack, that pack may subsequently lead us to our prey." Oobleck suggested.

"How long do we wait?" Blake asked.

"I don't think we have to wait, I can already smell the rest of its pack coming in right now." Wolverine alerted thanks to his trusty nose.

"Oh fuck…" Weiss exclaimed as she started to see more Beowulves coming.

"They'll probably spot us at any second now. We might as well take them out now and move on with the mission." Wolverine suggested to Oobleck.

"I believe you're right, now I want you to show me what you five got." Oobleck nodded, granting them permission to fight.

"Cover your ears, Zwei!" Ruby said and the dog does so.

Ruby started firing a few lightning Dust bullets at two Beowulves while Wolver goes in slashing the other three into pieces. Yang punches down three other Grimms with some explosive punches of her gauntlet while Blake slashes some down and uses her Shadow Clone Semblance to dodge some incoming strike.

Weiss dashes forward at the horde of Beowulves using her speed to get past them and slashes each one down using the Time Dilation, and Ruby finishes off the last remaining few with her scythe to slice the down to pieces and shoot down the last one.

While all this was happening, Zwei was just chasing his tail looking so cute doing so.

"They felt like little pups to fight." Wolverine mocked as he pulls out his claws.

"Heh. Piece of cake!" Ruby smirked.

"Do not celebrate yet, for I am certain this is the first bout of many. Shall we continue?" Oobleck said as they move on to the next area.

Wolverine just killed one Beowulf with a stab through the head and kick it away, then looks over to Oobleck.

"Finish with the Grimms here. Find anything out of the ordinary yet?" Wolverine asked the history Huntsman.

"Excellent work, students! Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any signs of criminal operations in this sector." Oobleck informed.

"Damn, it's like whatever we're looking for sure is at hiding." Wolverine cursed.

"Yes, let us move on to try our luck again." Oobleck said.

Team RWWBY follows with Ruby sheathing her Crescent and beckoning Zwei to follow them.

"Hey, Doc, y'know, I was actually looking forward to seeing a "pro Huntsman" in action. Like, fighting, or at least, helping us fight?" Yang asked, feeing a bit irritated that the Doc isn't fighting with them.

"Ah, but I am in action! Scouring the ruins of this once-great city for any signs of irregularity!" Oobleck stated before turning full to the team.

"Not every mission is filled with daring and heroism, girls. Sometimes it's just a heightened form of extermination! Remember, this is a job, and you all signed up for it. I do hope you understand that." Oobleck pointed out which got team RWWBY to see that Oobleck means business.

"Well, yeah… Of course." Yang stuttered, feeling a little weighted from those words.

Everyone walks together through the street as Wolverine is having some thoughts in his head about what Oobleck said, that this kind of thing is what we signed up for and remember back when Nick and Qrow found him to offer him a chance to become a Huntsman.

"What we sighed up for, huh?" Wolverine repeated the words.

Oobleck adjusted his glasses thinking that these students may have all come here to become Huntresses and Huntsman, but they all have their own different reasons of walking down this path and it's something probably personally to them as he has seen this before even back to when he was a student.

(With Yang)

The scene changes to Yang beating down a Beowulf and killed it with one final punch, and Oobleck standing close to her.

"Tell me, Yang: Why did you choose this line of work?" Oobleck asked.

Yang hesitated for a second and answer the question.

"Well, to fight monsters and save—" Yang said, but Oobleck cut her off.

"No, that is what you do. I want to know why you do it. The honest reason as to why you want to be a Huntress." Oobleck wanted to why her true reason of becoming a Huntress.

Seeing how Oobleck wants to hear the honest answer, Yang has consider it and decided to tell him what her reason is.

"The honest reason? I'm a thrill-seeker. I want to travel around the world and get wrapped up in as many crazy adventures as I can. And if I help people along the way, then that's even better. It's a win-win, y'know?" Yang explained her reason of wanting to become a Huntress.

"I see." Oobleck decided that answer would satisfying enough.

(With Weiss)

Oobleck is sitting on the edge of a high window while Weiss is fighting off a Beowulf.

"And you, Miss Schnee? A girl born into fame and fortune such as yourself certainly doesn't need the extra work. So... why choose this over a cushy job in Atlas?" Oobleck asked the SDC Heiress.

After Weiss finished off the Grimm, she turns to Oobleck to answer his question.

"It's exactly as you said: I'm a Schnee. I have a legacy of honor to uphold. Once I realized I was capable of fighting, there was no longer a question of what I would do with my life. It was my duty." Weiss stated.

"Interesting." Oobleck nodded, thinks there's more to this but decided to let it be.

(With Blake)

Oobleck jumps down in front of Blake who backflips to dodge a bunch of small, bird-size Nevermores and pulls out her gun to shoot all of them down. They look inside the building only to find nothing.

"And what about you, Blake? You seem to carry yourself with a sense of purpose." Oobleck asked the Faunus girl.

"There's too much wrong in this world to just stand by and do nothing. Inequality, corruption... Someone has to stop it." Blake believed as she has been trying to fight for Faunus her whole life.

"Very well. How?" Oobleck asked, wondering if she has any sort of plans for that.

However, Blake could not answer that question as she did not really have anything in her mind right now that would help with the White Fang and stop the violence between the two races. She wonders how things would even get better for the Faunus, and for herself too.

(With Wolverine, Ruby, and Zwei)

Both Wolverine and Ruby finish off the four Grimms in the area as Zwei runs up to them, and they turn around seeing their teacher walking up to them.

"Sorry! Uh... Are we ready to keep going?" Ruby asked.

"Nope! I believe that will have to do for today. It's going to be dark soon." Oobleck said before turning to WBY.

"You three, set up camp in that building. Oh, and please do make sure there are no more of those... creatures. Your leader and I are going to secure the perimeter. Come, Ruby, Wolverine." Oobleck ordered as the group separate.

Along the way, Ruby spotted something big from a far distance becoming shocked of how awesome and dangerous that Grimm looks right now.

"What is that? It looks awesome!" Ruby asked.

"That my dear, is a Grimm." Oobleck answered.

"Don't even think about killing it, Ruby. You'll be wasting your bullets." Wolverine said which surprises Ruby, she though he would want to go in there and kill the Grimm.

"He's right, your sniper rifle will do nothing more than agitate a Grimm of that size." Oobleck vouched for Wolverine.

"But… What if it attacks us?" Ruby asked concern.

"Fret not, Ruby; those Goliaths are not concerned with us. Ruby, not every Grimm is mindless, or rather not every Grimm is still mindless. You see, the Grimm you see before you are so powerful, so superior to the Grimm you fought, that they've undoubtedly lived hundreds of years, and in that time between killing humans and attacking our borders, they have done one important thing: They've learned. They've learned that when they attack our borders, they're likely to die, and what we lack in strength, we make up for in will, and that killing one human will only bring more." Oobleck explained one of the dangerous traits of the Horde of Grimm.

Wolverine looks at the Goliaths with an intense stare but also made sure not to give out any negative emotions to attract them, just remembering the time he actually fought a few of those Goliaths a few years back.

"Then why are they still so close to the city? What are they doing?" Ruby asked.

"Waiting." Oobleck answered while one Goliath look at the ruined city before walking away.

"You know, Doctor, I've actually been thinking about why I wanted to become a Huntsman." Wolverine said.

"Have you now?" Oobleck asked, being curious of this.

"Yeah, I remember when I used to trap in a lab, there was this woman who took care of me. She asked me if there was anything I wanted to do with my life if I were to get out, but I didn't know at the time. Just wanted to get out." Wolverine explained about himself.

"That's when she told me about Huntsmen and Huntresses, heroes always fighting the bad people and Grimm at the same time, even willingly sacrifice their lives to protect the weak. I felt inspired and excited that instantly decided to become one myself." Wolverine looked up at the sky, remembering the woman before turning to Oobleck.

"Guess you could say I'm doing this not just for myself, but for the one who helped me find a goal that I can follow through." Wolverine said before walking away.

Oobleck felt that Wolverine has been trustful with his words while Ruby felt inspired like she was listening more of his origin story.
