Restless Nights

Ally's POV

I stepped over the scary looking sign that looked like it was permanently etched into my kitchen floor. I took a deep breath preparing for the worst as my eyes scanned over the now destroyed kitchen. The cabinets were open, the kitchen sink was still running, and the chairs were turned over, one by one.

Unwanted tears had fallen from my eyes.

Memories of finding Dr. Lynn dead in her office had now claimed my thoughts once again. The bloody scene was enough to make one person sick, just the thought of finding my parents, somewhere in this house, like that.

Who could do this?

I questioned to myself.

I shook my head and sniffed. Was it Austin? Or maybe it was Daniel? They've all been lying to me about who they truly are. The sight of seeing fangs come out of Austin's mouth was enough to send me haywire. Was he some...bloodsucker?

That couldn't possibly be it, vampires do not and never have existed...

But judging by today's horrendous events, there could possibly be a chance that they might..?

I drew in a deep breath and walked past the kitchen -avoiding any thoughts of the word vampires- and into the living room. It looked like the Dust Bowl had simply swept by without leaving anything unharmed or broken. Family pictures were shattered, couches were torn, the only thing left unharmed was a treasure chest in the far corner of the room.

My father had told me never to touch that chest.

It was almost as if he was hiding his most prized possession in there. But at the time I was only 7 years old and I had no suspicions that there would be anything of importance in there. Yet something was always tempting me to open it...

I quickly walked over to it, letting my curiosity get the better of me.

I sat down on the floor and picked at the lock for a few minutes. It still wouldn't budge, there must be some key to opening this lock somehow. Sighing, I pondered for a few moments. Now if I was my dad...where would I hide a key? Especially if I didn't want my little girl finding it...

Aha! I know exactly where it is...

I quickly got up and ran up the stairs, surprised to see that my parents room was wide open. I slowly inched toward the room, scared to find out what was in there. I found my self silently praying that my parents weren't in there, dead, and covered in their own blood.

The ticking of the clock echoed throughout the hallway.

I finally opened the door a bit wider to find some boy with brown hair searching through my parents room. I was about to scream when someone cupped my mouth and pulled me back. I tried to grab their hand but it was cupped firmly around my mouth.

Whoever this person was, they were pretty set on keeping me dead silent.

"Don't say a word," the familiar voice whispered in my ear.

The sound of things falling in my parents room made me flinch. How could this person let this random stranger rummage through my parents things!? No, screw that! How did this person even have the audacity to come into my home this late at night!?

"Hmmph!" My words muffled between his hands.

His hot breath tickled my neck, his hands were wrapped around my waist trying to keep me secured. I don't know why but I felt oddly safe in this person's arms just by the way he held me...

"Okay, I'm going to let go off you and attack on the count of three... one...two...three..." He let go of my arms and ran into the room leaving me to stand alone by the walls. The sound of things getting knocked over was tremendously loud, I covered my ears as the sound of glass breaking was heard.

My heart was pounding, I so did not want to go into that room.

"You can come in now."

My breath hitched and I immediately remembered the sullen voice.

"Austin!?" I yelled as I walked in. "What are you doing here?"

He rolled his eyes at me, and smirked flashing a pair of fangs. "Well after you decided to take off, I went to go and find you after I dealt with your stubborn jackass of friend." He stated putting air quotes around the word friend.

"I don't know what he is to me anymore..." I said quietly. My body was shaking and I didn't know how to handle all of this in one day. My therapist was killed, I think I almost died in the greenhouse due to an unwanted encounter with some mad man and his chicks, I found out Austin has fangs and Daniel apparently collects bows and arrows to kill random people, my house is destroyed, and my parents have gone missing...

This is not exactly what you call, "living the life".

"Daniel's a highly trained vampire hunter, it's as simple as that." He stated.

I swallowed hard, did he just say... vampire hunter?

"Yes, I did just say vampire hunter." Austin spoke suddenly. I shook my head, "Did you just..."

"Read your mind? Hell yeah." He got up and shoved his hands in his pockets. It was then that I noticed his lean body structure, the way his blonde shaggy hair fell perfectly above his eyes, his strong muscles flexing without trying...he was perfect.

"Why did you come back for me?" I asked.

He sighed, "I don't know. I didn't want to go home so I guess I just started to look for you."

I sat a hand on my hip giving him a questionable look, "Mhmmm."

"Don't get the wrong idea." He snapped. "Come on we're going back to my house, it's not safe for you here." He grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of the room. I tried to stop him but he was too strong, "Excuse me, but my parents are missing!" I yelled as I pulled my hand out of his remarkably tight grasp.

"They're missing?"

I glared at him, "Um hello? Did you not see the havoc in this house when you rudely invited yourself in to come to my oh so needed rescue!?" He looked at me in shock. My face was probably turning red from the temper I was having.

"Well sorry, don't get your granny panties in a twist." He laughed and I kept my glare trained on him.

I sighed, "I need to find something anyways so leave without me." I went back into my parents room and tried to remember why I came up there in the first place... I repeatedly paced the room when my foot kicked something over.

It was my mother's jewelry box...

The key!

I quickly opened my mother's jewelry box and searched it. I needed to find that key, something was telling me to find that key for some reason. I sat down on the bed and found a little box. It was silver and had a bow on it. "Allison we need to go or... what are you doing?" Austin asked coming to my side.

I slowly opened the box to find a black key with a thin strip of silver string running through the small hole.

"I found it!" I chimed happily.

"A key? What are you going to do with some key?" He reached out to touch it but hissed as he jumped back. His rubbed his finger, the smell of burning flesh resonated through the air. "Damn..." He hissed. I could tell in his eyes that he was experiencing some type of pain.

"W-What's wrong?" I asked. He shook his head, "Nothing, just what are you going to do with that?"

I smiled, "I'm going to open a treasure chest." I got up and ran downstairs and into the living room. My heart started to speed up once more, I was so anxious to open this chest. I inserted the key into the lock while Austin took a seat next to me.

It clicked and popped open.

"Whoa..." Austin exclaimed in surprise.

The chest was filled with article after article on killings that had happened in Nightingale.

It went all the way back from the roaring twenties into the late 80's...

"What is all this?"

"Articles on vampires, obviously." Austin grabbed some of the articles and scanned through them. I also grabbed an article and decided to do some reading myself. I was so confused. How could my dad know all about this stuff? Heck, even some of these articles were made before he was even born!

Austin suddenly spoke up, "Bites. Published article in 1934, Nightingale, three people murdered, two holes found in their necks. A cross with a circle was permanently etched into their skin...? Ring a bell?"

"Yeah, the killings at the greenhouse. Sheriff said there was a cross and a circle around it etched onto each of their arms." I answered. Austin flipped the news paper around, "Oh and get this, 1936 a bunch of people with fangs appeared declaring this town as Pompeii..."

"Do you know anything about this?" I shifted to face him.

He nodded, "Yeah, my father told me about this group. First group of vampires to ever cross vampire hunters boundaries. Nightingale was strictly off limits to all vampires no matter where. The reason it was so strictly prohibited from them was because Nightingale would be the perfect place for vampires everywhere."

"So Nightingale is some vampire paradise?" I joked.

He didn't laugh.

"You could say that. It's a perfect place to start a vampire nation." He sighed and leaned against the chest, "Long time ago, the group of vampires declared Nightingale to be their territory, a territory named Pompeii. Due to the vampire hunters they never got the chance to claim this land as theirs. If they ever did, it was very short lived."

I nodded, "So what you're saying is, the vampire hunters killed them all?"

He shook his head.

"So some of them are still alive?" I questioned.

"Well one is, he's the leader, his name is Nero. He is the founder of the group Cabal."

I sighed. This was getting worse and worse...

"Great so an all powerful vampire is alive?"

"Yup and he might even be here in Nightingale as he promised so very long ago before your time." Austin spoke nonchalantly. "How could you be so calm about this!? There is a dead vampire here killing people off! Time is repeating itself except he might just get away with what he planned in the beginning this time!" I yelled standing up.

"He won't. Not as long as I'm alive."

"What is he even looking for here? What could Nightingale possibly have that he desires so strongly enough to kill innocent people?" I asked as I rubbed my forehead. This was giving me a migraine. "You ask a lot of questions? It's starting to get annoying." He stated.

I clenched my hand into a fist, "I'm confused alright!?"

He stood up and got in my face, "Well I'm sorry that you're confused! But if you want to stay here and look through these crappy useless articles then be my guest! Have fun being eaten alive!" He pushed past me and went out the door.

I scoffed. Suddenly a memory flashed back into my thoughts, I shoved the key into my pocket, and ran out the door following him.

"Wait!" I called out.

But he kept on walking away.

"What is the halcyon!" I yelled. Suddenly he stopped and turned back, "How do you know about that?" He asked suspiciously. I shifted on my feet uncomfortably, I didn't mean to say that, I just thought it would somewhat grab his attention...

"Allison..." he warned.

"This creepy man in the greenhouse yelled at me, trying to force me to tell him where this halcyon is, but I don't know why he said that or what it meant. All I know is that these two girls held me down and I blacked out the next minute!"

Suddenly Austin grabbed my shoulders, "Try to remember what happened before you blacked out."

I shook my head, "I-I can't-"

"Well try!" He ordered.

I closed my eyes and looked down, trying to sort my memories out one at a time.

"He...He put his fingers up to my forehead..." I answered quietly.

Austin growled, "Stand still." My body straightened, I watched as he delicately laid two fingers on my forehead. He took a deep breath and slowly pulled back. A blue wisp attached to his fingers slowly made its way out of my head...

I watched in shock as he enclosed it around his hands and crushed it.

"What was that?"

"Didn't I tell you to stop asking questions?" He retorted.

I glared at him and he sighed, "It was an osarius, used to track down anyone and anything."

"So he knows where I am? Like right now?"

He nodded.

"Great! That's just amazing!" I whined. Austin suddenly grabbed me and swung me onto his back, my legs wrapped around his waist. "What are you doing?" I asked. "I'm taking you somewhere off the grid where he can't find you." He stated while starting off with a nice jog.

"Excuse me but you can't just-"

Suddenly we were zipping past trees, I held onto Austin tightly, as he led me into the vast green bay forest.
