Ben, Lucy, and Natsu were on their way back to Kaby's place, still buzzing from their victory. The excitement of the mission hung in the air like static electricity. Natsu, now back in his usual attire, his pink hair no longer magically blonde, strode confidently alongside his companions.
"Man, you should've seen it!" Natsu grinned, punching the air with enthusiasm. His eyes sparkled with the lingering adrenaline from the fight. "Those Vanish brothers didn't know what hit 'em! I took 'em both out in one hit!"
Ben raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips. He glanced sideways at Natsu, his green eyes twinkling with amusement. "Oh really? Because I distinctly remember the both of them already being restrained before someone nearly blew us up along with those brothers."
Natsu's eyes widened for a moment, a flicker of surprise crossing his face before he let out an indignant huff. He crossed his arms, his lower lip jutting out slightly in a pout. "Hey! That's on you for covering them in that exploding tree sap stuff!"
Ben grinned, crossing his arms to mirror Natsu's stance. "Well, I'm just saying, the resin was doing a fine job of holding them. Not my fault you decided to light everything on fire."
"Oh, come on!" Natsu protested, his voice rising. He threw his hands up in the air, exasperated. "Fire makes everything better!"
Happy chimed in, floating nearby with his wings spread wide. The blue Exceed's tail swished back and forth as he hovered. "Aye! Except when it doesn't."
Lucy, who had been watching the exchange with growing amusement, finally chimed in. "You know, Natsu, there's something to be said for subtlety sometimes." She tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, her keys jingling softly at her hip.
Natsu scoffed, a puff of smoke escaping his nostrils. "Subtlety? Where's the fun in that?" He grinned widely, showcasing his sharp canines. "Besides, we got the job done, didn't we? And it was awesome!"
Ben shook his head, but there was a fondness in his exasperation. "You're impossible, you know that?"
"Impossibly awesome, you mean!" Natsu declared, puffing out his chest.
Lucy rolled her eyes, but couldn't hide her smile. "While you two were busy with your little tree sap fiasco, I was actually getting things done. Everlue never stood a chance against my spirits!"
Ben turned to Lucy, his competitive smirk softening into a genuine smile. "That's true. You handled yourself pretty well out there, Lucy. Gotta say, I'm impressed."
Lucy preened a bit at the praise, a proud grin spreading across her face. "Thanks! I've been working hard on my magic. It's nice to see it pay off."
As they continued walking, Lucy's eyes kept darting to Ben's unusual attire. She couldn't hold back her giggles any longer.
"Okay, I have to ask," she said, gesturing to his leafy ensemble. "What's with the forest fashion statement?"
Ben glanced down at his makeshift shirt, as if suddenly remembering he was wearing it. He paused for a brief moment, then shrugged with a mischievous grin.
"Well," he drawled, shooting a pointed look at Natsu, "when a certain fire-breathing knucklehead lets his opponent send a giant fireball your way, you've gotta improvise."
Natsu's head snapped up, eyes wide. "Hey! How was I supposed to know that frying pan could redirect my fire?"
Lucy's giggles stopped abruptly, her eyes widening as she processed what Ben had just said. "Wait, what? Natsu's fireball hit you?" She looked Ben up and down, confusion evident on her face. Her gaze lingered on his new shirt, searching for any signs of damage or singeing. "But... how are you okay? I've seen Natsu's attacks send people through ship hulls!"
Ben chuckled, his eyes darting briefly to Natsu before returning to Lucy. He waved off her concern with a casual flick of his wrist. "Oh, it wasn't that bad. I just got a little singed, that's all." His tone was light, almost dismissive, but there was a hint of tension in his shoulders that Lucy didn't miss.
Lucy's eyes narrowed suspiciously, her intuition telling her there was more to the story. "A little singed? From Natsu's fire?" She shook her head in disbelief. "How are you not more injured?"
Ben shrugged, his posture relaxing slightly as he sensed an opportunity to steer the conversation away from dangerous territory. "I'm a mage, Lucy. It takes more than a little fire to do serious damage." He offered her a small smile, hoping she'd take the bait.
Lucy's brow furrowed in confusion, her curiosity piqued. "What does being a mage have to do with being fireproof?"
Ben looked at her with a mix of surprise and amusement, as if the answer should be obvious. He leaned in slightly, his voice taking on a slightly professorial tone. "The Ethernano flowing through a mage's body, Lucy. It reinforces and invigorates us. The stronger the wizard, the more Ethernano they have, and the tougher they become."
Lucy nodded slowly, her brow furrowing slightly as she processed this information. "I know what Ethernano is, Ben, but I've never heard about it working like that before." She tilted her head, thinking back to her childhood lessons. "Not in any of my studies, at least."
Realization dawned on Ben's face, and he saw another chance to further distract from the earlier topic. "Ah, I suppose you wouldn't have," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Your teachers were all academic types, weren't they? Not really active combat mages."
Lucy's eyes lit up with curiosity, her earlier suspicions momentarily forgotten. "So, does this mean I can just train my magic and eventually start lifting carriages?" The image of herself casually hoisting a carriage over her head made her giggle, the sound light and carefree.
Ben chuckled at Lucy's enthusiasm, the leaf shirt rustling with his laughter. "It doesn't work quite like that, I'm afraid," he explained, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Magic amplifies what's already there, but it doesn't really add to it."
Lucy tilted her head, processing this new information. "So, I won't be bench-pressing buildings anytime soon?" she asked, a hint of disappointment in her voice.
"Probably not," Ben laughed, shaking his head. "But don't sell yourself short. With proper training - both magical and physical - you could probably do things that would surprise even you."
He paused, considering how to explain it better. "Think of it this way," Ben continued, gesturing with his hands. "You could have a grand wizard who can change the weather with a casual wave or summon meteors from the sky. But if they've only studied magic and haven't done any physical training, they wouldn't be much stronger than the average person when it comes to pure strength."
Lucy's eyes widened in understanding. "Oh, I see! So it's not just about magical power, but also about physical conditioning?"
Ben nodded, pleased she was catching on. "Exactly. Take Natsu, for example," he said, gesturing towards their pink-haired friend who had completely lost interest in the conversation when it switched to magic theory and was currently engaged in an animated conversation with Happy about the merits of grilled versus raw fish.
Lucy followed Ben's gaze, her brow furrowing slightly. "What about him?"
"Well, Natsu's pretty muscular, right?" Ben asked, and Lucy nodded in agreement. "But think about some of the stunts he pulls off. If it was just pure physical strength, he'd need biceps the size of watermelons and be twice his size to do half the things he does."
Lucy's eyes widened as realization dawned. "So, it's his magic amplifying his existing strength?"
"Bingo," Ben said with a grin. "His dragon slayer magic enhances his natural abilities, making him capable of feats that would be impossible for a non-mage of similar build."
Lucy nodded slowly, a determined glint appearing in her eyes. "So, if I want to get stronger, I need to work on both my magic and my physical fitness?"
"That's right," Ben confirmed. "It's all about balance. The stronger your body, the more your magic has to work with."
As they continued their conversation, Lucy found herself stealing glances at Ben. Despite his explanation, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to his resilience than just Ethernano. The casual way he had shrugged off Natsu's fire earlier still nagged at her. But for now, she decided to let it go, enjoying the lighthearted moment with her friends.
Ben, noticing her thoughtful expression, decided to lighten the mood further. He struck a dramatic pose, hands on his hips, causing the leaf shirt to rustle even more. "Who knows?" he said, maintaining his heroic stance. "Maybe I'll start a new trend in Magnolia. Leaf shirts could be the next big thing!"
The unexpected silliness from usually-serious Ben sent Lucy and Natsu into fits of laughter. Even Happy, who had been half-listening while eyeing a nearby, possibly fish-filled, stream, joined in with his signature "Aye sir!"
Lucy wiped a tear from her eye, still giggling. "Oh sure, I can see it now. 'The Ben Witt Collection: For When You Want to Look Like a Walking Salad.'"
As their laughter died down, Lucy couldn't resist the opportunity to tease Natsu about his earlier disguise. A mischievous grin spread across her face as she nudged him with her elbow.
"Hey Natsu, I have to say, that maid outfit really suited you," Lucy said, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "Maybe we should get you one for future missions. You know, just in case."
Natsu's face remained surprisingly calm as he turned to Lucy, his expression one of complete bewilderment. "Maid outfit? What are you talking about, Lucy? I never wore any maid outfit."
Lucy blinked, taken aback by his nonchalant denial. "What? But you did! We all saw you in it at Everlue's mansion!"
Natsu shook his head firmly, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Nope, never happened. And even if it did - which it didn't - every last bit of that outfit would have been destroyed. Poof! Up in flames. So there's no proof anyway."
Happy, who had been quietly observing the exchange, decided to chime in. "But Natsu, don't you remember? You were complaining about how itchy the lace was-"
"Nope!" Natsu interrupted, his voice a touch louder than necessary. "No idea what you're talking about, buddy. Must've been a weird dream you had."
Lucy couldn't help but laugh at Natsu's adamant denial. She shared an amused glance with Ben, who was clearly enjoying the dragon slayer's discomfort as much as she was.
"Well, dream or not," Ben added with a grin, "I have to say, Natsu, you have surprisingly good legs for a guy who spends most of his time fighting."
Natsu's cheeks flushed slightly, but he maintained his composure. "You guys are all crazy. Let's just focus on getting back to the mansion, alright?"
As they continued their journey, the conversation drifted to other topics, but Lucy couldn't help stealing glances at Natsu. His stubborn refusal to acknowledge the maid incident was both frustrating and oddly endearing. It was moments like these that reminded her how much she enjoyed being part of this weird, wonderful guild.
The afternoon sun was beginning to dip lower in the sky by the time they finally arrived at the mansion. Kaby was waiting for them on the front steps, his face a mixture of hope and anxiety. As they approached, Lucy couldn't help but feel a twinge of nervousness. How would Kaby react when they told him they had destroyed the book instead of bringing it back?
The journey back to the mansion took a while, but the time flew by with all their chatter. When they finally arrived, Kaby was waiting for them, his face a mix of hope and anxiety.
"Welcome back," he said, ushering them into the same room as before. "Were you... successful?"
Lucy stepped forward, the book hugged tight to her chest. She handed it over to Kaby with a flourish. "Not only did we get the book," she announced, trying (and failing) not to sound too smug, "but Everlue's in big trouble now. The cops are digging into all his shady business as we speak!"
Kaby's eyes widened as he took in their words. "I... I don't know what to say. Thank you. All of you." Kaby nodded, but his eyes were glued to the book. He barely seemed to hear what Lucy was saying. His hands were shaking a bit as he took Daybreak from her.
The three of them watched as Kaby pulled out a match. He struck it, and a tiny flame flickered to life. Just as he was about to torch the book, Lucy's hand shot out, grabbing his wrist.
"Wait!" she exclaimed, her brown eyes wide with sudden realization. "Before you burn it, I need to ask you something."
Kaby looked at her, surprise evident on his face. "What is it?"
Lucy took a deep breath, her gaze steady. "Are you... Kemu Zeleon's son?"
The question hung in the air for a moment. Ben and Natsu exchanged confused glances, but Lucy's focus remained on Kaby. Slowly, the man's shoulders sagged, and he extinguished the match with a quick shake of his hand.
"Yes," Kaby admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "That's why I want to destroy this terrible book. It brought nothing but shame and misery to my father."
Natsu's eyes widened, his face twisting in confusion and anger. "What? You want to burn your dad's book? That's messed up!"
Ben stepped forward, placing a calming hand on Natsu's shoulder. "Hey, easy there," he said softly before turning to Kaby. "Could you tell us why? It seems like there's more to this story."
Kaby sighed, his shoulders slumping as if carrying a heavy weight. "You don't understand. My father... he was ashamed of Daybreak. It tore our family apart."
Lucy leaned in, her curiosity piqued. "What happened?"
"He vanished for three years," Kaby explained, his voice cracking. "No word, nothing. All for this... this book for Everlue."
Ben felt a pang in his chest, watching Kaby's hands tremble.
"When he finally came back," Kaby continued, "things got ugly. But that wasn't the worst of it."
Lucy leaned in, her eyes wide. "What happened?"
Kaby took a shaky breath. "He... he cut off his own arm. Right there in front of us. Said he was done writing forever."
Natsu's jaw dropped. "Whoa, that's intense."
"At the hospital, I... I lost it," Kaby admitted, shame coloring his words. "Said some pretty awful stuff. Stormed out on him."
Ben placed a gentle hand on Kaby's shoulder. "We all say things we regret sometimes."
Kaby nodded, his eyes glistening. "The last thing he told me was that he'd been thinking of me the whole time he was gone. He died not long after that."
Lucy's breath caught in her throat. "Oh, Kaby..."
As I've gotten older, the guilt's only gotten worse," Kaby said, his gaze fixed on the book. "That's why I've been trying to get this book back. To destroy my father's greatest shame."
Lucy's eyes widened, a mix of excitement and understanding crossing her face. She took a step forward, her voice soft but urgent. "Kaby," she said gently, "before you do anything drastic, there's something you should know about Daybreak..."
Kaby looked up at her, confusion etched on his features. "What do you mean?"
Lucy took a deep breath, her words coming out in a rush. "This book... it's not your father's greatest shame. It's his magnum opus, his masterpiece!"
Ben and Natsu exchanged surprised glances, while Kaby's brow furrowed in disbelief.
"That's impossible," Kaby whispered, shaking his head. "This book... it ruined him."
But even as he spoke, something extraordinary began to happen. The book in Kaby's hands started to glow, a soft, golden light emanating from its pages. Everyone watched in awe as the letters on the cover began to peel off, floating into the air like fireflies.
"What's happening?" Natsu exclaimed, his eyes wide with wonder.
The glowing letters danced around them, swirling in intricate patterns before slowly rearranging themselves. As if guided by an invisible hand, they settled back onto the cover, forming a new title.
"Dear Kaby, by Zekua Melon" Ben read aloud, his voice filled with amazement.
The spectacle didn't end there. Every page of the book burst to life, words lifting off the paper and filling the air around them. It was as if they were standing in the center of a whirlwind of letters and sentences, each one finding its new place in the transformed book.
Lucy's face lit up with realization. "It was his final spell," she breathed, watching the magical display. "Your father poured everything into this book, Kaby. Not just his words, but his magic, his love... his message to you."
Kaby's hands trembled as he held the newly formed book, tears welling up in his eyes. "To me?" he whispered, his voice choked with emotion.
As the last of the floating letters settled back into place, the golden glow faded, leaving behind a completely transformed book. The room fell silent, the weight of the moment settling over all of them.
Ben placed a comforting hand on Kaby's shoulder. "Maybe you should read it," he suggested gently. "I think your father left you something important."
Kaby nodded, his fingers tracing the new title with reverence. "I... I never knew," he murmured, a mix of regret and hope in his voice. "I thought..."
Lucy smiled softly. "Your father loved you, Kaby. He created this masterpiece for you. It was never meant to be his shame, but his legacy... his way of reaching out to you one last time."
Kaby stared at the book in his hands before flipping through a few pages. His eyes widened as he read, a mix of emotions playing across his face.
"I... I never truly understood him," Kaby murmured, his voice thick with emotion. He let out a soft chuckle, tears glistening in his eyes. "All this time..."
He looked up at the mages, his face filled with gratitude. "Thank you," he said, his voice cracking slightly. "Thank you so much. I'll cherish this book forever. I can't believe I ever thought of burning it."
Lucy beamed, happy to see the man finally at peace with his father's legacy. Ben nodded, a small smile on his face.
Natsu, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, suddenly piped up. "Well, I guess this means we can't take the money," he said casually, stretching his arms above his head.
Lucy's head whipped around so fast she nearly got whiplash. "What?" she exclaimed, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Why not?"
Natsu blinked at her, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Because the mission was to retrieve the book so it could be destroyed," he explained, shrugging. "If the book isn't destroyed, we can't accept payment. It's that simple."
Lucy's jaw dropped, her dreams of rent money evaporating before her eyes. Ben couldn't help but chuckle at her expression, even as he nodded in agreement with Natsu.
"He's right, Lucy," Ben said gently. "We didn't complete the job as requested. It wouldn't be right to take the money."
Lucy's face scrunched up, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "But... but... but..." she sputtered, her eyes darting between the book, Kaby, and her teammates. Her shoulders slumped, a pout forming on her lips as she let out a dramatic sigh. "I guess you're right," she mumbled, crossing her arms.
"Man, all that work for nothing," Lucy whined, kicking a small pebble on the path. "My poor rent money..."
Natsu, walking with his hands behind his head, glanced at her. "C'mon, Luce. Taking money for a job we didn't finish? That'd mess with Fairy Tail's good name!"
Ben nodded, adding, "Besides, I don't think they actually had that kind of money to spend."
Lucy's head snapped up, her brow furrowed. "What do you mean? Did you see that big house? They're loaded!"
A mischievous grin spread across Natsu's face. "About that... it wasn't actually Kaby's house."
"Wait, what?" Lucy's jaw dropped, her eyes wide with surprise.
Ben chuckled, shaking his head. "I noticed something was off. The house just didn't feel lived in, you know?"
Natsu nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! The smell was all wrong. Didn't smell like Kaby at all. More like... temporary."
Lucy's eyebrows furrowed. "What do you mean?"
Ben explained, "Well, for starters, there wasn't any staff around. For a house that big, you'd expect to see at least a few servants or a butler."
"Oh!" Lucy's eyes widened in realization. "You're right! I can't believe I didn't notice that."
Happy, who had been quietly flying alongside them, couldn't resist a playful jab. "Maybe you were too busy thinking about all that money, Lucy!" he teased, a mischievous grin on his face.
Lucy's cheeks flushed red. "I was not!" she protested, but her voice lacked conviction. She let out a groan, her head falling back dramatically. "Ugh, I can't believe I didn't see it! "
Ben patted her shoulder sympathetically. "Hey, don't be so hard on yourself. You figured out the book's secret. That's pretty impressive." He paused, a gentle smile spreading across his face. "And you know what? Thanks to you, a criminal's been brought to justice. Everlue can't hurt anyone else now. That's gotta count for something, right?"
Lucy's pout slowly morphed into a small smile. "I guess you're right. And seeing Kaby's face when he realized what his father had done... that was pretty special."
Natsu grinned, slinging an arm around Lucy's shoulders. "See? Who needs money when you can have adventures like this? Plus, you're making the world a better place!"
Lucy's smile faltered slightly. "Yeah, but you know who needs money? People with rent to pay."
Ben chuckled, shaking his head. "Don't worry about that now. We've got a few weeks until rent's due, right? Plenty of time to take on some more jobs."
"Yeah!" Natsu chimed in, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "And next time, we'll find a job with a huge reward! Maybe fighting a monster or breaking a curse!"
Happy flew in circles above them, adding cheerfully, "Aye! And next time, try not to get stars in your eyes when you hear about the reward!"
Lucy rolled her eyes, but her smile grew wider. "Alright, alright. I get it. But next job, we're definitely getting paid!" She paused, then added with a determined glint in her eye, "And it better be enough to cover my rent and then some!"
The trio laughed, continuing their journey back to Magnolia, their spirits high despite their empty pockets. As they walked, Lucy couldn't help but feel a warmth in her chest. Maybe, just maybe, this whole Fairy Tail thing was going to work out after all.
Suddenly, Happy flew in front of Lucy, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Hey Lucy, you didn't walk away completely empty-handed, you know?"
Lucy's brow furrowed in confusion. "What are you talking about, Happy?"
With a flourish, Happy pulled something out of his small backpack. The sunlight caught on the object, making it gleam golden. Lucy's eyes widened in disbelief as she recognized what it was.
"Is that... a golden Celestial Spirit key?" Lucy gasped, her eyes widening as she reached out instinctively.
Happy grinned, proudly holding up the shiny object. "Sure is!"
Lucy's excitement quickly turned to a frown. "Happy! Did you steal that? You can't just take things, even if they belonged to a bad guy like Everlue!"
The blue cat's tail drooped. "Aww, Lucy, I wouldn't do that! Virgo gave it to me herself!"
"Huh?" Lucy blinked, confused. "Virgo? The maid spirit?"
Natsu leaned in, equally curious. "Yeah, wasn't she working for that Everlue creep?"
Happy nodded eagerly. "Uh-huh! But get this - she came to me while you guys were busy turning in Everlue. Said something about their contract being broken now that he's locked up."
Lucy's jaw dropped. "Really? But why would she...?"
"She wants to make a contract with you, Lucy!" Happy chirped, his tail swishing excitedly. "Said you seemed like a much nicer master than Everlue."
Lucy's fingers trembled as she took the key, tracing its intricate design. "I can't believe it," she whispered, a slow smile spreading across her face. "A new Zodiac key, just like that!"
Natsu grinned, patting Lucy on the back. "See? Who needs rent money when you've got a new powerful spirit, right?"
Lucy laughed, her earlier disappointment completely forgotten. "You're right! This is way better than any reward money!" Her excitement, however, was short-lived as she examined the key more closely.
Her smile faltered slightly. "Although... it is Virgo. I'm not sure how I feel about that."
Natsu tilted his head, confused. "What's wrong with Virgo? I thought she looked pretty tough!"
Lucy sighed, twirling the key between her fingers. "It's not that she isn't powerful. It's just... well, you saw her appearance, right? That big, gorilla-like form isn't exactly what I had in mind for a celestial spirit."
Ben chuckled, shaking his head. "Lucy, you can't judge a book by its cover. Or in this case, a spirit by its appearance."
Lucy nodded reluctantly. "I suppose you're right."
Ben stepped closer, a gentle smile on his face. "Why don't you give her a quick summon? Maybe talking to her will help you feel better about it."
Lucy's eyes widened. "Right here? Right now?"
"Why not?" Ben shrugged. "It's as good a time as any to make a contract, isn't it?"
Excitement began to overtake Lucy's hesitation. She took a deep breath, holding the key out in front of her. "Alright, here goes nothing. Open, Gate of the Maiden! Virgo!"
A bright golden light erupted from the key, momentarily blinding them all. As it faded, they heard a soft, feminine voice.
"You called, Mistress?"
Lucy blinked in surprise. Standing before her was not the large, intimidating maid she remembered, but a petite young woman with short pink hair and bright blue eyes. She was dressed in a typical maid outfit, complete with frills and a white headpiece. However, Lucy's eyes were drawn to the short shackles adorning Virgo's wrists, a peculiar detail that seemed at odds with her otherwise neat appearance.
"Virgo?" Lucy gasped, her jaw dropping. "Is that really you? You look... different."
Virgo bowed slightly, the chains on her wrists jingling softly. "I apologize if my appearance displeases you, Mistress. I have the ability to change my form to suit my master's preferences."
Lucy's face lit up, her earlier doubts melting away. "No, no! This is great! I mean, you look wonderful!"
Natsu leaned in, examining Virgo closely. "Wow, you really can change your appearance, huh? That's pretty cool!" He grinned widely, showcasing his sharp canines. "But you know what? I kinda liked your other form better. It was more... exciting!"
Before Lucy could protest, a puff of pink smoke enveloped Virgo. When it cleared, the gorilla-like maid from before stood in her place, towering over them all.
"Is this more to your liking?" Virgo's deep voice rumbled, her massive form casting a shadow over the group.
Lucy's eyes widened in horror. "No, no, no!" she cried, waving her hands frantically. "Please, switch back!"
Another puff of smoke, and the petite Virgo reappeared, bowing apologetically. "Of course, Mistress. I live to serve."
Lucy let out a relieved sigh, shooting Natsu a glare. The fire dragon slayer just shrugged, an innocent grin on his face.
"Um, about that," Lucy began, fidgeting slightly. "Could you maybe... not call me 'Mistress'? It feels a bit... weird."
Virgo tilted her head, considering. "As you wish. Would you prefer 'My Lady'?"
Lucy shook her head. "No, that's not quite right either."
"Perhaps 'Your Highness'?" Virgo suggested.
"Definitely not," Lucy said, her cheeks flushing slightly.
Happy, who had been circling Virgo curiously, piped up. "How about 'Fish Queen'?"
"Not helping, Happy," Lucy grumbled, while Natsu snickered in the background.
Virgo's face remained impassive as she offered another option. "What about 'Princess'?"
Lucy's mouth opened, ready to dismiss the suggestion like the others, but she paused. Her brow furrowed slightly as she considered it, rolling the word around in her mind. "Princess?" she repeated, her voice thoughtful. A small smile began to form on her lips. "I... I kind of like that, actually."
Ben, who had been watching the exchange with growing amusement, couldn't hold back anymore. He let out a snort of laughter, quickly trying to disguise it as a cough.
Lucy's head whipped around, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "What?" she demanded, her cheeks flushing slightly.
Ben cleared his throat, fighting to keep a straight face. "Oh, nothing," he said, his voice dripping with innocence. But he couldn't resist adding with a teasing grin, "... Princess."
Lucy's face turned an even brighter shade of red. Not wanting to sink to Ben's level, she maturely decided to stick her tongue out at him instead. Ben just let out something in between a chuff and a laugh before giving a formal bow to Lucy in a silent 'as you wish, your majesty'.
Lucy couldn't help but crack a smile at Ben's antics. She shook her head, trying to hide her amusement as she turned back to Virgo. "Princess will do wonderfully, thank you, Virgo," she said, attempting to regain her composure.
Virgo bowed once more, her lips twitching slightly. If she found the exchange amusing, she kept it well hidden. "As you wish, Princess. Shall we proceed with our contract?"
Even while hashing out the finer details of her contract with Virgo, Lucy found herself studying Ben. The playful glint in his eyes, the easy smile on his face – it was a stark contrast to the focused, serious demeanor he had maintained throughout their mission. It reminded her of their time in Hargeon, how quickly he had switched from strategic planning to casual banter once the danger had passed.
Lucy couldn't help but wonder about this duality in Ben's personality. It was as if he wore two different masks, effortlessly slipping between them as the situation demanded. During their mission, he had been all business – sharp, alert, and decisively practical. But now, with the threat behind them, that facade had melted away, revealing a more relaxed and jovial Ben.
This dichotomy intrigued Lucy. What caused this shift? Was it a coping mechanism, a result of his mysterious past, or simply a natural part of his personality? She made a mental note to pay closer attention to these transitions in the future. Slowly but surely, she was peeling back the layers of the enigma that was Benjamin Witt, and each new discovery only piqued her curiosity further.
For now, though, Lucy was content to enjoy this lighter side of Ben. His teasing had a warmth to it that made her feel included, part of their little ragtag group. She found herself looking forward to uncovering more of these hidden facets of his personality as their adventures continued.
Meanwhile, Natsu and Happy had already lost interest in the whole spirit business, their minds wandering to more pressing matters – namely, food. Natsu was absently playing with a small flame, making it dance between his fingers with the casual ease of someone who had lived with fire all their life. The orange glow reflected in his eyes, giving them an almost hypnotic quality.
Happy, ever the easily distracted feline, had spotted a vibrant blue butterfly fluttering nearby. His tail swished back and forth in anticipation as he lazily chased after it, paws occasionally swiping at the air in half-hearted attempts to catch the elusive insect.
"Hey, guys," Natsu called out, his eyes still fixed on the flame twirling around his fingertips. The fire cast dancing shadows across his face, highlighting his growing impatience. "Can we get moving soon? My stomach's starting to growl." As if on cue, a rumbling sound emanated from his midsection, loud enough to make Happy pause in his butterfly pursuit.
"Aye! I could go for some juicy fish right about now."
Lucy rolled her eyes, but there was a hint of fondness in her exasperation. "Alright, alright, you two. Let me just finish up with Virgo, and then we can find somewhere to eat. Maybe somewhere that serves both fire and fish," she added with a grin.
As Lucy began discussing the terms with her new spirit, Ben watched the scene with a mixture of amusement and warmth. Despite the teasing, he was genuinely happy for Lucy. He knew how much her celestial spirits meant to her, and seeing her excitement over a new key was heartwarming.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows as they prepared to continue their journey. The addition of Virgo to their team promised new adventures, and Ben couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. Something told him that with Lucy's growing collection of spirits and Natsu's penchant for chaos, their future missions were bound to be anything but boring.
