It was lunchtime at school. Yosuke, Chie and Yukiko were all eating cup noodles, while Kyoko was simply drinking a cup of coffee from the imported beans she had picked up a while ago.
"Oooh, the instant noodles really hit the spot…" Chie grinned.
"You sure you don't want anything, Kyoko?" Yosuke asked his friend.
"I've trained myself so that I can get by without food for a while." Kyoko explained, before taking another sip. "A simple coffee is enough for me."
"Whoa…" Yosuke said, impressed.
"You know, the rainy season's just about here." Yukiko said, after swallowing some more noodles.
"Isn't it a little early?" Yosuke asked, looking at her.
"Once it starts, it'll be raining every night." Yukiko said. "We'll have to keep a constant eye on the Midnight Channel."
"Crap, I didn't even think of that…" Yosuke said, as Chie looked up from her ramen.
"Sometimes, even the simplest of things will slip by." Kyoko reassured him.
"Hah, and here I thought Yukiko was worried about the rain because of the school campout." Yosuke said, with a dumb smile on his face.
"Why are you so excited about that?" Chie asked.
"The school has a campout?" Kyoko asked.
"Oh, that's right, it's the first time for you two." Yukiko said.
"You do realize that the only purpose of the school campout is to "develop a love for one's hometown in young people," right?" Chie asked Yosuke.
"Yeah, they tell us that upfront. So?"
"Well, you see, the way we supposedly develop that love is by picking up trash off the mountain." Chie said, sighing.
"P-Picking up trash?!" Yosuke said. ""Develop a love" my ass! That's slave labor!"
"I don't see the issue." Kyoko said, shrugging.
"Nothing really gets to you, does it?" Yukiko asked her friend.
"Only a few things." Kyoko said, going back to sipping her coffee.
"Well, the night's kinda fun." Chie said. "We cook our own meals with mess kits and sleep in tents."
"The four of us are in the same group." Yukiko said.
Yosuke suddenly stood up. "The same group, huh? Does that mean we get to sleep together at night too!?"
"Ugh, you wish!" Chie shouted. "Guys and girls sleep in different tents! And I'm warning ya, if you leave your tent at night, you'll be expelled on the spot!"
Yosuke sat down dejected. "So I'm left by myself in a tent. Joy… Ugh, this just gets worse and worse. I thought this was gonna be fun."
"It's only for one night, and we disband before noon the next day. It doesn't last very long." Yukiko said.
"Oh, we did have some fun at the river before going home last year." Chie said.
"Did they let you go swimming?" Yosuke asked, a little too quickly.
"I think so." Chie said. "There's always someone who takes a dip, even though we didn't."
"I see… so you can swim in the river…" Yosuke said slowly.
Both Chie and Yukiko looked confused at why Yosuke seemed to be talking to himself, while Kyoko simply continued to sip her coffee.
The next day after class, Kyoko was putting her books away, before Yosuke walked up to her.
"Yo, Kyoko." He said.
"Hello, Yosuke." Kyoko said. "You seem to be in a chipper mood today."
"Well, I was just wondering a couple of things." Yosuke said. "When I saw that Mondo guy earlier, I thought; "wow, I'm scared of him, but he looks badass on a motorbike!""
"Mondo does give that impression." Kyoko said.
"So that got me thinkin', I bet I could pull that look off too!" Yosuke said. "And then the second thing, do you have a motorcycle license?"
"...no. Why are you ask-?"
Yosuke placed a manual for getting a motorcycle license on her desk.
"So I got you this. Wanna get your license with me, partner?" He asked.
Kyoko looked through the manual, before looking back up at Yosuke.
"Well, I can't afford anything bigger than a scooter on my budget, but at least that'll let us get to new places." He said. "Don't you think we deserve that much, seeing as how we're investigating the case?"
"Yosuke, a license isn't just something you flaunt around." Kyoko said. "Riding a motorized vehicle is one thing, but carelessly driving one could-"
"You don't need to give me a lecture." Yosuke said. "It might surprise you, but I'm dead serious about this."
"'Sup senpai!" Kanji said, walking in. "Hey, about that camping trip…"
He noticed the two stopped talking.
"Oh, you guys busy right now?"
"Kinda. We're talking about motorcycles." Yosuke said.
"Motorcycles? You gonna go stomp a gang?" Kanji asked. "If you're bringin' a war, I'll help!"
"No, we're not "bringing a war." What does that mean, anyway?" Yosuke said, sighing at the conclusion Kanji jumped to. "We're just talking about getting motorcycle licenses!"
"Licenses? You guys don't have yours?" Kanji asked.
"Huh?" Yosuke raised a brow. "No way...Don't tell me you already…"
"Yosuke, he's 15." Kyoko said.
"Yeah. I ain't old enough to get my license just yet." Kanji said.
"Then why'd you say it like that!?" Yosuke said annoyed, though his mind went to a different subject. "Man...That reminds me, I'm surprised you picked a fight with that biker gang. How'd you chase after them?"
"I'm interested too." Kyoko said, turning to Kanji. "Mondo didn't give me any of the details before he left."
"Eh, a bike's all I need for that." Kanji said.
"...you caught up with the Crazy Diamonds… using only a bicycle?" Kyoko asked.
"Yeah. Wasn't that hard." Kanji said. "You say some shit to them to get 'em pissed, and they turn straight around. Knocked a couple of 'em off their bikes before we switched to just our feet."
"Damn, we got a hardcore new member..." Yosuke noted.
Kyoko was quite glad Mondo wasn't there at the time when Kanji beat up his gang.
"But going back to the main topic. I'm serious about this...If we have motorcycles, we can go all over. It'll be fun!" Yosuke looked out the window. "Man...Somewhere out there, the best days of our youth are ahead of us!"
"Yeah! I'm with you on that one!" Kanji said, fired up.
Kyoko looked back at the manual. It was true that with a motorcycle, the range of activities they could all do together would significantly widen. Perhaps she should try consulting Dojima about this later.
Kyoko took off her shoes and entered the house to see Dojima having dinner, accompanied by Adachi.
"Ah, you're back." Dojima said, looking up.
"Uncle. Adachi-san."
"Hi there!" Adachi said with a wave. "You want some eel too? Fair warning; it's from the supermarket."
"Well, excuse me." Dojima said, offended, since he was the one who bought it.
"I-It's delicious, though!" Adachi quickly stammered to cover up his unintentional insult. "I can't believe it was on sale!"
Dojima stared at Adachi briefly, before turning back to Kyoko to explain. "Sorry, but this guy eats instant noodles every day. That constant slurping got on my nerves, so I called him here."
"I can't imagine living like that…" Kyoko said, feeling ill at the thought.
"You don't have to bluff like that." Adachi said dismissively. "You just wanted to eat dinner with a coworker, right?"
"Don't be stupid." Dojima said.
"But eel was a great choice! Nanako-chan loved it, at least." Adachi said. "I'd say she's eel-ly proud of her daddy! Eh? Ehhhh...? Haha…"
"...Adachi-san, please." Kyoko said with a sigh, her uncle having a similar reaction to the joke.
"Did my joke slip away?" Adachi asked. "It is an eel, after all…"
"Just eat your dinner." Dojima almost ordered.
"Yes, sir." Adachi said meekly, before switching topics. "Nanako-chan's such a good girl, though. She went straight to do her homework once her plate was clean… It's not every day you get to eat eel. You'd think she would have spent some more time savoring it."
"You think that because you slack off too much. You should follow her example." Dojima practically scolded.
"Way to hit where it hurts…" Adachi said with a wince.
With Adachi back to eating, Kyoko considered asking her uncle now, though he asked her first.
"What's the matter?" Dojima asked her.
"Well… I've been considering getting a motorcycle license." Kyoko said. "I'm asking for your permission, as my current legal guardian."
"What's the matter? A motorcycle? You mean a scooter? Oh, that's right, kids your age can ride those." Dojima furrowed his brow in thought. "I don't know, though…"
"C'mon, don't be a spoilsport." Adachi said, taking a quick break. "It's no surprise she wants one, out here...I understand how you feel, since I'm from the city myself. The trains don't run that often, and walking around everywhere is pretty inconvenient, isn't it?"
"Admittedly, it is a bit of a hassle." Kyoko said.
"Right? It's criminal!" Adachi nearly shouted, almost like he had been wronged.
Dojima still looked unsure. "You say that, but…"
"That reminds me, I remember you telling me something once, Dojima-san." Adachi suddenly brought up. "About some of the reckless things you did on your motorcycle when you were young…"
Dojima whipped his head around to him. "You moron! Think before you talk! And once you're done eating, hurry and-!"
His phone started ringing before he could finish the sentence. He groaned, before picking up.
"It's me. Mm. Mmhm. All right, we'll be there soon." He hung up, slipping his phone back into his pocket. "Looks like I made the right choice to skip the booze... Adachi, you were the one in charge of that file, right?"
"File?" Adachi raised a brow. "O-Oh. Did that suspicious guy show up again?"
"Would you keep your mouth shut? We're going back. Get in the car." Dojima said.
"Back...you mean, to the station!? But I haven't had my eel liver soup yet…" He complained.
Dojima's glare was all Adachi needed to stand up and get in the car ASAP.
"About this license… did you decide on this yourself?" Dojima asked. "No one talked you into it?"
Kyoko shook her head. That was technically true, since she was being the voice of reason when Yosuke had suggested it.
"I know it's hard without a way to get around. But two-wheeled vehicles can be dangerous...Do you understand?" Dojima asked her.
"I'll be careful with it." Kyoko said. "I promise."
"I'm sure I can trust you to do that. But allowing you to get one is another thing…" Dojima scratched the back of his head in thought. Seeing the signs, Kyoko sighed, guessing that obtaining a motorcycle was out of the question.
"Don't give me that face. I know you're serious about this." Dojima said with a smile. "First, you'll need a license. We can talk about this again when you have one."
"I understand. Thank you, Uncle."
"Well, then. Sorry to dump this on you, but I need you to look after the house." He said, before following Adachi out.
The moment he got out the door, Kyoko's own phone began to rang. She pulled it out to see Yosuke was calling.
"Yo, it's me!" Yosuke said when she picked up. "How did it go with your uncle? I've been on the edge of my seat thinking about it!"
"He gave me permission." Kyoko said.
"Seriously!?" He nearly yelled. "Then let's go get ours as soon as we can!"
Kyoko nearly dropped her phone. "That soon?"
"I gotta hit the books! Let's make sure we both pass together!"
"A-Alright." Kyoko said, before hanging up. "He must really want that license…"
Though while she did decide to try and study for the exam, Adachi mentioning someone suspicious was always on the back of her mind…
Yosuke met Kyoko on the way to school, noticeably yawning. "Mornin'."
"Did you get any sleep?" Kyoko asked, concerned.
"I went to bed, but little details kept bugging me, so I'd get up again to check the manual. It never ended...I ended up getting almost no sleep at all…" Yosuke groaned. "Well, if we're gonna do this, let's pass on the first try. How're you feeling?"
"I read over the manual." Kyoko said. "It seems fairly straightforward enough."
"Hehe, now that's my partner!" Yosuke smirked. "Well, let's make sure we're not late to the exam. We'll leave as soon as school's out!"
Kyoko nodded, as they walked along. Several of the other students had begun to chatter.
"Can't believe they let that Tatsumi back in school."
"I heard he started a biker gang or something and started harassing other students."
"He hangs out in the Practice Building for the most part. Thank God."
Kyoko narrowed her eyes at the rumors. Yosuke was too out of it to overhear and simply yawned.
Sure enough, they left for the exam soon after school. The answers seemed to flow from Kyoko's hand. It was mid-afternoon once they got off the bus.
"Haha, we passed on the first try; just as planned!" Yosuke said, stretching his arms.
"As I thought; fairly straightforward." Kyoko said.
"Yeah, it was pretty easy." Yosuke agreed. "I might've studied a bit too hard…"
The two of them walked along the sidewalk, before noticing that Dojima was standing by the gas station. He noticed the two approaching as well.
"Hi!" Yosuke waved as the two walked over. "You on duty?"
"We just stopped by to get gas." Dojima said. "And, well, to take care of some minor business. Where did you two go?"
"We obtained our licenses." Kyoko said, holding hers up.
"Already!?" Dojima said surprised.
"Yeah, it was pretty easy." Yosuke said, showing off his own.
"I know it's just a written test to get a scooter license, but still, I wasn't expecting you to pass so soon...Oh well…" He rubbed the back of his head. "Looks like I'd better think of a way to convince my brother…"
Kyoko's gaze briefly hardened, but it soon lightened up. "Thank you, Uncle."
"I can't say no now that you've gotten your license." Dojima said with a chuckle. "Your enthusiasm is catching."
"Yes! You got the okay!" Yosuke whooped. "I need to head home and read through the catalog...! Well, see you tomorrow!"
He waved as he ran home, the two nodding to say bye to him.
"Mind if I borrow you for a sec before you head back home?" Dojima asked.
"I have time." Kyoko said.
"Hey, Adachi!" Dojima called towards the gas station.
"I just finished filling it up." Adachi replied, before he wheeled over a silver-white motorized scooter.
"Sorry for dragging you into this." Dojima apologized to Adachi, who waved a hand to say it was fine. Dojima turned to Kyoko. "This is my scooter. I had it fixed at the shop. It may be old, but it runs pretty well. I came to put gas in it, but I wasn't expecting to hand it over today, too…"
Kyoko widened her eyes. "Are you saying…?"
"I'm letting you have it." Dojima said with a nod.
Kyoko looked over the bike with a careful eye. "It's quite nice, Uncle. It's been kept in good condition."
"You can tell? The local shops don't carry twist grips, so I had one of the repair guys at work help me out with it in secret." He said enthusiastically. "Ah...Don't tell anyone that, okay?"
"You're always so strict at the station, but you're a cool dad inside, huh?" Adachi chuckled.
"Shut up, Adachi!"
"You always yell at me…" Adachi grumbled, before going off into a small ramble. "Still, I wish we had a sleek means of transportation like that. Who knows when that suspicious guy will show up again? Hasn't he been using professional-quality cameras to take pictures of people's houses from the Amagi Inn to around here? Looks like he knows the back streets too, so a car won't be-"
"Will you stop blabbering like that!? Go back to the car!" Dojima shouted.
Adachi quickly ran back to the vehicle, as Dojima cleared his throat.
"Well… anyway." Dojima turned his attention to Kyoko again. "I was around your age when I got my license too. I took the test behind my parents' back."
"You did?" Kyoko said, surprised.
"Yup. When your grandfather caught me riding a scooter later on, he gave me a good thrashing...Hahaha...Don't tell Nanako about that, okay?" Dojima said with a surprisingly mischievous chuckle.
At the moment, Kyoko couldn't tell what was more jarring, Dojima being rebellious when he was younger, or the idea that her grandfather had given him a disciplinary beating.
"Since I've already given you the okay, I won't bug you about traffic laws." Dojima said. "Just be safe when you're riding it. You do that, and I'll look the other way if you decide to ride it out of town. Can you promise me?"
"You have my word, Uncle." Kyoko said.
"Good. I'll hold you to that."
The rumors had been in the back of her mind for a while. So after school, Kyoko decided to investigate and walked to the practice building. There she found Kanji leaning against the wall, seemingly looking through one of the windows.
"Kanji." Kyoko said.
"Whoa, Kyoko-senpai!" Kanji nearly jumped. "I-I wasn't peeping inside! It's not like that!"
"..."
"...So, why are you making that scary face at me? Do you have something to tell me?" Kanji asked.
"This is my normal expression, Kanji." Kyoko said. "And yes, I do."
"...I see." Kanji looked around briefly. "Let's go somewhere else, then."
The two of them walked alongside the Samegawa flood plain. They stopped partway down the road.
"So, whaddaya want, dragging me out here?" Kanji asked. "Oh, you here to tell me off or somethin'?"
"I just want to know something." Kyoko assured him.
"How come you're soundin' like a cop?" Kanji asked.
Kyoko stared at him again.
"Oh, right. Detective. Jeez Kyoko-senpai, your glare is scary." Kanji said. "So, what is it?"
"Well Kanji, I've been hearing a few rumors recently." Kyoko said. "A few of them involving you and a gang of bullies."
"Eh? Bullies? M-Me!?" Kanji said, one after the other. "Senpai, you suspecting me!?"
Kyoko shook her head. "I'm just curious if you got tangled up in something unintentionally."
"Senpai...I didn't do it." Kanji said. "I mean...Maybe it ain't that easy to trust me, since they say I was in a gang...But you gotta believe me…"
"I do believe in you, Kanji." Kyoko said. "That was why I asked you."
Kanji looked down at the river. " ...'s my own fault rumors like that go around, huh...? At this rate, I'll be causing trouble for you guys…"
"You don't have to worry about it." Kyoko said. "I was merely looking out for you."
"Senpai…" Kanji rubbed the back of his head before speaking. "Uhh...Whenever you got time...Could you maybe hear what I have to say? I feel all cramped inside...And I'm too dumb to know what it's about…"
Kyoko nodded, as she felt Kanji's drive to change for the better. She could feel their bond glow.
Thou art I... And I am Thou...
Thou has established a new bond...
It brings thee closer to the truth...
Thou shalt be blessed when creating Personas of the Emperor Arcana…
"To make sure I don't cause you any trouble… Huh… Well, I guess I should smack that gang of bullies around?"
"Kanji!" Kyoko said in disbelief.
"Hah! Just a joke, Senpai!"
Kyoko walked to the school gate the next day, as Chie ran up to her. "Hey! Yo!"
"Good morning, Chie." Kyoko said.
"Who do you think'll show up on the Midnight Channel next? I heard it's going to rain this evening, but it's not going to last all night." Chie said. "Hey, have you been trying to solve the case on your own in your spare time?"
"Wait, you haven't been-?"
"I know, I should be thinking about it, too. But that kind of stuff just isn't my specialty. How about you?"
"I need to be good at this." Kyoko said. "It's part of my profession."
"Yeah, I guess so. I'm jealous." Chie said. "Well, everyone has strengths and weaknesses. I'll stick to kicking things. Times like this are perfect for working out!"
As the rain fell, Kyoko walked back to the Dojima residence, umbrella in hand. She looked at the scooter leaned up against the fence, the one Dojima had given to her.
Hmm… I do need some practice… and learning how to drive in the rain might be useful later.
Making her decision, she decided to get in some practice by riding around the neighborhood. She put on her helmet, before starting up the vehicle.
Heh, if everyone at home could see me now. Kyoko thought. Most of them would be shocked, but she'd imagine Mondo would approve.
"Okay… here we go."
"Welcome back Big Sis-huh?" Nanako widened her eyes. "What happened?!"
Kyoko was soaked head to toe, and there was quite a lot of mud on her boots and sleeves. Her face had a bit of it too, along with some leaves in her hair.
"Nanako?" Kyoko said as she made her way to the shower. "Remind me to never drive in the rain."
The next morning (feeling much fresher), Kyoko received a call.
"Hello? It's Yukiko."
"Oh, can I help you, Yukiko?" Kyoko asked.
"I'm sorry to call you so suddenly. Do you have time to come out today?" She asked.
"I'm free today." Kyoko said. "I can meet with you."
"Okay, I'll see you in a bit." Yukiko said.
Yukiko had brought Kyoko to the Junes grocery department. She was unsure why exactly Yukiko had wanted to go here today, though she had a sneaking suspicion it was related to her cooking.
"I wrote down everything I need, so this shouldn't take that long." Yukiko said.
"Have you improved at all yet?" Kyoko asked.
"That's… I hope so." Yukiko said sheepishly. "I'm studying the basics of the basics. But it's not turning out quite like it does in the book, even though I'm following the directions."
Kyoko had a sneaking suspicion that Yukiko wasn't actually following the directions, but decided to encourage her. "Well… keep practicing."
"Yes. Practice makes perfect." Yukiko agreed with a nod. "I think there's no point unless I do it alone. Our cooks help me out all the time. At first they just give me advice, but eventually they take the knife from me."
Kyoko let out a sigh of relief she didn't realize she was holding. Thankfully Yukiko didn't pick up on it.
"So even if the meal turns out wonderfully, it doesn't mean anything that way...I told them to leave me alone, but they still stay and watch." Yukiko said. "Are they that worried about my cooking...?"
"I'd assume they care about you." Kyoko said.
"They care about...me? Do...Do you really think so?" Yukiko said, surprised.
"I don't say things I'm unsure of." Kyoko said.
"Last time the head chef took the knife from me, shouting "I can't stand to watch anymore!" and made the rest." Yukiko remembered. "The waitress saw it and said to the head cook, "Yukiko wants to make it herself, even if it's awful...""
"I could imagine…"
"Before I knew it, I was "studying how to cook for someone I like"...My parents got involved and it exploded from there…" Yukiko giggled. "Funny, isn't it?"
"I suppose so." Kyoko could imagine the scene unfolding.
"But...maybe it wasn't all a lie."
"Hm?" Kyoko noticed a bit of a blush on Yukiko's face as their bond grew. "Do you have someone in mind?"
"Possibly." Yukiko said with a shrug. "I'm not sure. Just… help taste my food again, okay?"
"...very well." Kyoko said, mentally preparing herself for the next time she'd have to eat it.
Kyoko walked down the halls after class. Everyone else had begun to wear the summer outfits.
"Hey Kyoko."
She saw Yosuke call her over.
"Afternoon, Yosuke." Kyoko said.
"You're still wearing that jacket? Even when it's summer?" Yosuke asked.
"My jacket isn't that thick." Kyoko said, before noticing Yosuke's expression. "Are you alright?"
"Can I… talk to you for a minute?" He asked quietly. "There's something I want to say."
Seeing that he was obviously distraught, Kyoko nodded. "Of course."
Kyoko followed Yosuke for a while. The teen seemed to be mindlessly wandering, before they stopped at the riverbank. He was holding something in his hand.
"...I found this." He held it up to Kyoko. "It's a Print Club sticker I took with senpai…"
Kyoko widened her eyes seeing it, before looking up at Yosuke.
"When I first got here, she insisted on taking it. Back then...somewhere inside me, I thought I was above this place…" Yosuke confessed. "A lot of people saw me as the enemy because Junes was going to ruin the shopping district. But… when I met her, she told me, "Parents are parents. You're you..." Even if she didn't really mean it… it made me happy. Because of her...I started to think maybe this town wasn't all that bad."
Kyoko continued to listen, seeing his face shift expressions.
"But then…"
He couldn't finish the sentence.
"But then she passed on." Kyoko said for him, as carefully as she could.
"Why...?" He asked, his eyes shimmering. "Why did she… have to… die...? It pisses me off… It makes me mad! I wanted to talk with her more! I wanted to get to know her better! But… she's… not here anymore."
Yosuke had devolved into crying out loud. Kyoko wanted to speak to him, but he started to address her first.
"Kyoko… I get it now. I wanted to forget about Saki-senpai. How she's not here anymore. I wanted to forget that… I was living a boring life in the middle of nowhere."
"Yosuke-"
"When the murders started, I got excited… I thought there was finally a point to me being in Inaba...I thought I could forget Senpai was gone… and the fact that I was such a loser… I jumped at the murders and never once thought about what I was doing… I… didn't even take the first step… I'm sorry… Saki-senpai. I'm sorry… Kyoko."
"You don't have to apologize to me." Kyoko said.
"But… I got you involved with the case, and all I did was run away from myself…" He said, eyes red.
"I would've gotten involved in this case sooner or later." Kyoko said. "You did take the first step by wanting to investigate it. I don't know how lost we would be if you didn't."
Yosuke wiped his eyes, and Kyoko heard something that sounded like gratitude.
"It's nice to hear that. But I think I'm awake now… I need to get over the fact that Saki-senpai isn't coming back… That when this case ends… I'll have nowhere to run… and I won't have changed… You made me realize that."
"Yosuke… I think you have changed." Kyoko said with a smile, feeling their bond grow stronger.
Yosuke smiled, before sighing. "Kyoko, I think I'm all cried out…"
She could tell he was lying, since new tears kept on flowing from his eyes. Before she realized what she was doing, Kyoko walked forward and wrapped her arms around Yosuke.
"H-Huh?" Yosuke stammered with a blush.
"I'll stay here until you stop." Kyoko said. "I promise."
"I…" Yosuke couldn't finish what he was going to say before he let the tears flow freely.
Kyoko could hear his rapid heartbeat with how close she was. If she were to pay less attention to him, she would've heard her own as well.
A/N: Yes the title is a Kamen Rider reference.
For obvious reasons, I cut out a lot of the original context for why Yosuke wanted a motorcycle.
Nothing much to say, just some character interactions. It's interesting to do a bit of a different take on them since Kyoko's personality is different, but similar enough so that the options chosen don't feel too off. We got a few down this time... and one that might be a bit more important in the future.
Feel free to leave a review. See you all next time.
