Chapter 36: The Author
500 BC - Hall of Legends
The Hall is rather empty this day, with only Lord Simultaneous and the Apprentice present, with the Sentinel Knight standing guard as always
"So how is your plan to deal with the Dark One coming along?" Simultaneous asked
"I haven't had time to work on it" the Apprentice said "The Sorcerer has tasked me with recording the major events in the various Realms for posterity"
"He has you acting as a scribe?" Simultaneous asked "get him up here" and Merlin shows up in astral form
"Why have you summoned me, my Apprentice?" Merlin asked
"Quit the act Merlin, I asked him to" Simultaneous said "why do you have him acting as a scribe?"
"Who else can I trust to do it?" Merlin asked
"You're not picking an apprentice, you're picking a scribe" Simultaneous said "give him a little magic to travel with"
"Very well" Merlin said and magic swirls around the Apprentice's hand and a quill appears in it "this should allow him to travel and keep himself safe"
"Woah" Simultaneous said "I'm detecting the ability to warp reality from that thing… I said give him a little magic, not the whole Grail!"
"Even we can't predict every obstacle" Merlin said "this should allow him to get out of whatever corner he finds himself in. Only the Author can use the quill, and if the Author writes his own happy ending, he will lose the ability to use it"
"That's still a lot of power to hand a single person" Simultaneous said "this is gonna end badly… but eh, do what you want, it'll be a good lesson for Renet to learn from and should give you and your Apprentice more time to deal with the Dark One… just be careful in choosing your Author, don't rush it"
450 BC - Athens - Greece - Land Without Magic
The Apprentice goes with the Author's Quill in hand goes up to the person the Sorcerer decided should wield it
"Hello, Plato"
348 BC - Enchanted Forest
The Apprentice summons the Sorcerer
"Why have you summoned me, my Apprentice?" Merlin asked
"The Author has passed away" the Apprentice said
"Have you selected another Author?" Merlin asked
"I believe his student Aristotle would be a good successor" the Apprentice said "are you sure we can't extend their lifetimes? Otherwise, we're gonna to have to select a new Author every century or so"
"No" Merlin said "the longer a person is the Author, the more temptation they have to misuse the power… this Aristotle will be a good successor…"
