Chapter 55: New Adventures
The sun warmed Naruto's skin as he lay in the grass at the training ground waiting for Hinata. Konoha remained temperate for most of the year and Naruto thoroughly enjoyed the early warm weather in mid-March. He had been training by himself for a while and was waiting for Hinata who said she'd stop by to train with him.
After a few minutes, he heard her delicate footsteps as she approached him. He feigned sleep, even when she sat next to him and brushed the hair out of his eyes. She placed a feather-light kiss on his lips and when she leaned back, she noticed the sly grin on his face, his eyes still closed.
"You were faking?" she said, hiding a giggle behind her hand.
He opened one eye slowly, his grin spreading into a smile. "You should be able to tell the difference."
Hinata averted her eyes, pink staining her cheeks. "I wasn't paying as close attention to details…I got distracted by you."
He opened his other eye and raised a hand to cup her face, bringing her closer. "I know the feeling," he said as he leaned up and kissed her languidly, threading his fingers into her long, dark hair.
Hinata melted into the kiss, her heart fluttering as Naruto's fingers gently tangled in her hair. Her shyness faded as warmth spread through her, the familiar feeling of his closeness making her feel more confident. She dared to deepen the kiss for just a moment, her fingers trailing along his jaw. When they finally pulled apart, she looked into his eyes, her cheeks still tinged pink.
Naruto's gaze softened as he looked at her, his thumb brushing gently across her cheek. "You're amazing, you know that?" he murmured, his voice carrying a mixture of awe and affection.
Hinata's blush deepened, but she smiled, her eyes sparkling with happiness. "You're the one who is amazing," she whispered, her fingers resting lightly against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her fingers.
He chuckled softly. "Well, I must have done something right to be blessed to have you by my side," he replied, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "I'm really glad you came."
She nodded, her eyes briefly drifting to the training ground before settling back on him. "Me too, I feel like I haven't seen you much since otou-sama started extra training for everyone in preparation for the war. I'm happy that he agreed to let me teach you some Gentle Fist techniques. I know you want to get stronger, Naruto-kun, and I think learning it could be useful to you," she said, her voice soft but sincere. "I want to help you reach your dreams. Whatever it takes."
Naruto's expression grew more serious as he reached up to brush a strand of hair from her face. "Hinata...you already do," he said. "You make me feel like I can do anything. And I would do anything for you."
The quiet moment stretched between them, each feeling the weight of the words unspoken. Then, Naruto broke the silence with a grin, his playful side returning. "But you know, if you're here to train, I won't go easy on you," he teased, his blue eyes twinkling with mischief.
Hinata giggled, standing up and extending a hand to him. "I wouldn't expect you to," she replied, her voice laced with determination. "But I won't go easy on you either."
"Good! I look forward to it. Though do you really think I can do it? I don't have your eyes or anything."
Hinata gave him a small nod, her cheeks faintly pink but her eyes steady. "The Byakugan only lets us know where to strike, but Gentle Fist can still be helpful to learn. I can't teach you everything since you're not a Hyuuga and don't have the Byakugan, but I can teach you the way we control our chakra. Fluidity is a big part of it."
Naruto frowned slightly, glancing at his hands. "Fluidity, huh? Guess I'm not exactly known for that." He laughed, a little sheepishly, but his expression grew more serious as he stepped toward her. "But I'll try my best."
Hinata nodded, her fingers coming together in the traditional stance and motioning him to follow along. "First, let's work on your stance. Gentle Fist requires a steady and smooth flow of chakra, but also an awareness of the body. Think of it like a river. Your chakra should move like water."
Naruto blinked, nodding slowly. He mimicked her stance as best he could, though his shoulders were a bit too tense and his stance a bit too wide. Hinata moved closer, adjusting his arms with a soft, careful touch.
"Relax your shoulders, and keep your breathing even," she said, guiding his hands. "Feel the chakra flow from your center."
Naruto took a deep breath, feeling the chakra slowly pulse through his body. It felt foreign to try and direct it with such precision, rather than the explosive power he was used to. He glanced at her. "Like this?"
Hinata gave him an encouraging smile. She moved a few steps back, holding her hand up as she demonstrated a quick, fluid motion that directed chakra straight through her fingers. "In Gentle Fist, even a light touch can be powerful."
Naruto grinned, excitement sparking in his eyes. "Alright! Let me try."
He threw his hand forward, a bit too forcefully, and ended up stumbling as he tried to balance himself.
Hinata couldn't help but giggle, covering her mouth as she watched him regain his footing. "You'll get it, Naruto-kun," she said softly, stepping forward. "Gentle Fist is about finesse, not force. Try again, but this time aim at me."
He stood opposite her and repeated his previous movement, this time using less force, but lost his balance and fell on top of Hinata, facing her nose-to-nose as he braced himself above her. They locked eyes and Naruto didn't wait for her response to his fall, leaning down immediately and capturing her lips with his own.
Hinata's breath hitched as Naruto's lips met hers again, their intimate position intensifying the moment. For a few heartbeats, everything around them fell away—the training ground, the village, even their ambitions. All that existed was the emotions between them.
Slowly, Naruto pulled back, his eyes meeting hers with a mix of tenderness and mischief. "Maybe I need to fall on you more often if it gets us moments like these," he murmured, his grin widening.
Hinata let out a soft laugh, her cheeks a deeper shade of pink. "I...I wouldn't mind," she replied shyly, her hand lightly resting on his shoulder.
Naruto's grin softened, and he brushed a thumb across her cheek. "You really are something else, Hina."
They stayed like that for a breath, and Hinata felt a boldness well up within her. Taking the initiative, she pushed his shoulders, rolling them over until he was underneath her. She straddled him, her gaze steady as she looked down at him. A mischievous sparkle appeared in her usually gentle eyes, catching Naruto off guard.
"How's that for finesse?" she teased, surprising even herself with the boldness in her voice. Her hands pressed lightly against his chest, holding him down, though he could easily break free if he wanted to.
Naruto stared up at her, momentarily speechless, before she leaned down kissing him squarely on the lips. All thoughts of training slipped out of his mind as he placed his hands on either side of her face, kissing her back just as fervently. He slipped his tongue into her mouth, earning a surprised squeak from her and she happily reciprocated the action.
Hinata played with the zipper on his jacket, which he had already partly pulled down during his earlier training, breaking their kiss to lean back and look him in the eye. "Do you mind?" she asked, her breath coming out in soft pants.
He dumbly shook his head.
"Good," she said as she leaned back, sitting on his thighs, and unzipped his jacket the whole way.
She slid her hands along his chest, pushing his jacket to the side and Naruto instinctively sat up partway to help her remove his jacket, leaving him in his white t-shirt. She then began to unzip her own jacket and shrugged it off, leaving her in her tight mesh-armor shirt, and tossing her jacket next to them.
Naruto's gaze roamed over her curves, dumbfounded before finally finding his voice, "I like the bold side of you." He paused. "No, I like all of you, but this side is a nice treat."
Hinata let a small giggle escape. "I guess you bring that out in me." She kissed him again, wrapping her arms loosely around his neck.
He gripped her hips, pulling her closer to him as she straddled his lap. Trailing his kisses from her lips to her jaw and down her neck, he smiled when he realized she was wearing the necklace he bought her for her birthday under her hitai-ate.
His fingers trailed over the silver sun dangling from the chain but as his eyes strayed from the necklace to the curve of her cleavage, his hand followed suit. He grazed the edge of the fabric on the shirt's collar, watching Hinata carefully for any sign of uncomfortableness at his actions.
He'd be lying if he said he hadn't stared at Hinata's chest a few times over the years, and now that they were dating, he could actually touch. So when he realized she was receptive to his hand resting on her breast, he lightly squeezed, causing Hinata to bite her lower lip to stay quiet.
Naruto increased the pressure slightly and kissed her deeply to muffle the moan that tried to escape her lips. Hinata pulled off his shirt, tossed it next to his jacket, and pushed him to lay back on the ground, but just as Naruto's hands drifted under her shirt to begin to remove it, their bliss was shattered.
"Naruto…" came a deep, threatening voice.
The lovers broke apart as if struck by lightning, both equally pale as they realized exactly who caught them.
"Neji-nii-san!" stammered Hinata as she scrambled to her feet, face now beginning to redden in embarrassment.
Naruto rose as well, his hands raised in a defensive gesture. "Uh...this isn't what it looks like!"
Neji, who had his arms crossed intimidatingly and Byakugan active, took a deliberate step toward the blond. "Really? Because it looks to me like you're trying to defile Hinata-sama after you said you weren't doing anything but kissing her."
"No! Wait!" Naruto's voice cracked nervously as Neji took another step forward.
"You're missing your shirt and you had your hands up Hinata's. What else am I supposed to think?"
Naruto glanced around for his shirt and quickly threw it on as Hinata stepped in front of him defensively. "Neji," she chastised, leaving out the honorific, "It's not like that! I started it, not Naruto-kun."
"Even if that's true, as a daughter of the head of the clan, you have the responsibility to be above reproach as to keep the Hyuuga name in good standing." Neji's eyes narrowed, his voice cold as ice, "What would your father say if he saw this? Or worse, the elders?"
Naruto, despite the sweat forming on his brow, stepped forward, shielding Hinata behind him. "Hey, hold on! I'd never do anything to hurt Hinata! I care about her more than anything!"
"Then prove it," Neji snapped, his voice as cold as ice. "Because right now, all I see is a reckless boy who's putting her reputation—and her future—at risk."
Naruto clenched his fists, his voice rising. "I don't care about reputations! I just care about Hinata!"
"It's obvious you don't care about reputations," Neji retorted, his tone biting. "But if you're serious about her, Naruto, then act like it. Respect her, respect her family, and stop doing foolish things like this."
Hinata stepped out from behind Naruto, her voice trembling yet determined. "Neji-nii-san, I understand your concerns, but Naruto-kun has never disrespected me. He's always protected me."
Neji glared at Naruto still before taking one quick step toward him and quickly tapping both of Naruto's shoulders causing his hands to go slack at his sides. At Naruto's shocked expression, a small smirk appeared on Neji's face.
Hinata shot her cousin a sharp look. "That's too far…"
Neji looked at her, his anger finally dimming into something more restrained. "I would've made it worse and you know it, but Godaime is requesting you both come to her office in an hour for a mission and as unhappy as I am about this, I'm not going to get in the way of a mission."
"Kinda late for that," muttered Naruto, nodding his head toward his arms.
"I did warn you. Don't worry, Hinata-sama can unblock your chakra points, but you'll most likely be numb the rest of the day." After a long pause, Neji dropped his volume low, "If you think that's bad, don't let Hiashi-sama catch you."
As Neji walked back out of sight, Hinata turned to Naruto and shook her head amusedly. "You fell on purpose, didn't you?"
Naruto grinned mischievously. "Worth it."
An hour later, Hinata had unblocked Naruto's chakra points in his arms and they made their way through the village to the Hokage's Office. They knocked and waited for Tsunade's response before entering and were surprised to see Sasuke and Namiko inside talking to Tsunade.
Namiko immediately smiled brightly and went to hug her best friend. "I feel like I have barely seen you the last couple of weeks!"
"I know! Otou-sama has kept the whole clan busy," replied Hinata.
"What are you two doing here?" asked Naruto as he playfully ruffled Namiko's hair.
She batted away his hand and smoothed her loosened hair, shooting him a glare. "Ba-chan called me in for a checkup, then told us to follow her to her office. So here we are."
Hinata's brow furrowed worriedly. "Are you—?"
"I'm fine and they're fine too," Namiko reassured with a smile. She turned toward her godmother. "Can you tell us why we're here now?"
Tsunade sighed heavily. "I finally received a response from Kumo. The hachibi jinchuriki, Killer Bee, is offering to help you learn how to control the kyuubi at an island near Kumo."
"Really?!" asked Naruto excitedly. "When do I head out?"
"I'm going to send Namiko too." At Sasuke's worried and Namiko's panicked looks, Tsunade continued, "That's why I wanted to check you over so thoroughly today, and I think you can handle it. You've had no complications in your pregnancy so far and both twins are right on track; I wouldn't send you if it wasn't necessary. You need to be able to gain control over the kyuubi in case your seal breaks. We can't have it escape and run amok."
"You requested weeks ago that I stay out of sight and not tell anyone about my pregnancy, yet now you want to send me on a mission?" Namiko's tone was beginning to sound frantic.
Sasuke shook his head. "I don't like this one bit. What if something happens to Namiko or the babies?"
Tsunade held up a hand defensively. "I thought of that already, which is why I am sending Hinata."
Hinata's lavender eyes were wide in surprise. "Me? Why not Sakura or Shizune?"
"You're more than capable of handling this. Your Byakugan helps you to check on Namiko and the twins and their chakra pathways at will, and Sakura tells me you've been studying with her to help Kurenai in labor," explained Tsunade. "You're also an excellent sensory shinobi and I can't think of anyone better."
Hinata bowed her head humbly. "Thank you, Tsunade-sama. I appreciate your confidence in me."
Tsunade glanced at Sasuke. "Before you argue with me, you'll be going too. I know you won't let her go without you, and honestly, I would feel better knowing she and Naruto had you for additional protection, including the fact that your Sharingan may be needed to control the kyuubi."
Sasuke grumbled but nodded. "Fine, but if anything happens to her on this mission…"
"It's the safest place for her," assured Tsunade. "The Raikage said this place was used to train jinchuriki and is completely inaccessible by normal means."
"So when do we leave?" asked Naruto, practically bouncing in excitement.
"You'll head out tomorrow morning at eight from the main gates," said Tsunade. She caught Namiko's eye. "I wouldn't do you or them harm. You know that."
Namiko looked at Sasuke for assurance and, at his reluctant nod, let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. "Okay, I'm going to trust you on this, ba-chan."
Tsunade nodded, her expression softening. "Good. You'll have the evening to prepare. Make sure you rest—especially you, Namiko. Stressing over this won't do you or the twins any good."
Sasuke placed a steadying hand on Namiko's lower back, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. "We'll be ready, but I still don't like this idea. If anything seems off, I'm taking Namiko and leaving, mission or not."
Tsunade smirked, not surprised at all by Sasuke's protective tone. "That's exactly why I'm sending you, Uchiha. Now, all of you, out. I've got more work to finish before this plan gets off the ground."
As they filed out of the office, Namiko rubbed her stomach anxiously, her fingers brushing over the growing swell. Naruto fell into step beside her, his usual cheery demeanor slightly tempered by concern.
"Hey," he said, nudging her gently with his elbow. "We'll stick together, alright? You've got me, Hinata, and the world's most overprotective husband. Nothing's gonna happen to you or the Uchiha 2.0."
"You're such a dork." Namiko smiled despite herself, rolling her eyes. "Thanks, nii-chan."
Hinata walked alongside them, her Byakugan quickly scanning Namiko without being obvious about it. "I'll watch over you the whole time," she promised softly. "And if there's any issue, I'll immediately notice."
"See?" Naruto added cheerfully, throwing an arm around Hinata's shoulders. "We've got this covered. Kyuubi training's gonna be a breeze."
Namiko let out a breathy laugh, but her hand tightened slightly on Sasuke's arm as they reached the street. "I hope you're right. But this doesn't affect just me anymore, you know?" Her voice softened, the weight of responsibility heavy in her tone. "If I mess this up…"
Sasuke's hand slid over hers, his expression unyielding. "You won't. I'm not leaving your side. You're stronger than you think, and you're not doing this alone; you have me, Naruto, and Hinata backing you up. Everything will be fine."
Naruto scratched the back of his head, his grin widening. "Geez, even broody-bastard has some pep talk skills. Who knew?"
"Shut it, idiot," Sasuke muttered, but the faintest smirk tugged at his lips.
The group fell into a comfortable silence as they walked through the village, the evening sun casting long shadows. Namiko glanced up at Sasuke, then back at her brother and best friend, feeling the faint stirrings of hope. Maybe this mission wouldn't be so bad.
Yamato, Gai, and Aoba accompanied the four young shinobi on their mission to Genbu Island, the place where they were to meet up with Killer Bee. It took them approximately two days to travel to the port to sail to the island, and Namiko was more than happy to finally be able to walk on her own feet.
"You really didn't have to carry me the whole way," said Namiko to Sasuke, stretching her arms over her head.
Naruto was the one who spoke up instead, "You can't exactly run using your chakra; you'd only slow us down. It would've taken us a week to get here otherwise."
"I'm aware I can't run or use chakra very well right now, Naruto, but I could've still walked in parts." She shot her brother a glare.
"Now, you two, don't let your sibling squabbles get in the way of this amazing adventure!" Gai said, pumping his fist into the air. "I'm sure he just wanted to preserve the Power of Youth!"
Namiko blinked at Gai's exuberance, unsure how to respond to his unrelenting energy. She settled for an awkward smile, her hand unconsciously rubbing her lower back.
"Power of Youth, huh?" Sasuke murmured, his tone deadpan but with the faintest trace of amusement as he adjusted the strap of their supplies on his shoulder. "She's carrying more than enough of that already."
Naruto snickered, catching the subtle dig, but Namiko wasn't letting him or Sasuke get away with it. "I may be pregnant, but that doesn't mean I'm fragile. You two act like I'm made of glass or something."
"It's not about fragility," Sasuke countered smoothly, his dark eyes meeting hers with an intensity that softened just for her. "It's about not taking unnecessary risks."
Namiko sighed, knowing there was no arguing with him when he used that tone.
Before she could retort, however, Yamato's quiet but firm voice cut through. "We're nearing the docks. Keep the bickering to a minimum; we don't want to draw unnecessary attention."
Aoba nodded in agreement. "It's best to keep things low-key until we're safely on the boat. The fewer people who notice us, the better."
Namiko shot Naruto a grin at his deflated expression. "Don't worry, nii-chan, once we're on the boat you can go right back to being your usual boisterous self."
Naruto lit up at the comment, but before he could comment, Gai interrupted with a dramatic pose. "That's the spirit, Namiko! Optimism and camaraderie! This team has the Power of Youth written all over it!"
Sasuke muttered something under his breath that sounded like, "More like a headache," but Namiko chose to ignore him as they finally stepped onto the weathered wooden docks and soon the boat.
Gai's enthusiasm didn't last long. He turned out to be horribly seasick and Namiko grimaced as Gai vomited into a bucket as Aoba ushered him off the main deck. 'This is going to be a long trip for him.'
Yamato turned to the four. "I'm going to go check with the captain. Feel free to explore; I should take three or four days to get to the island." Everyone nodded and Yamato went on his way.
Naruto ran to the side of the ship to look at the horizon. "This is so cool! It's been a while since we were last on a ship, right Sasuke?"
"That was ages ago. I'm surprised your memory goes back that far," snickered Sasuke. "You still owe me for getting you that actress's autograph."
"You married my sister, I think that's payment enough."
"Seriously? I'm only worth an autograph?" Namiko raised an eyebrow, pretending she was mad, but she couldn't fight the grin that rose to her lips.
Sasuke shrugged before wrapping an arm around Namiko's waist. "No, you're far better than a stupid autograph, so once again, I came out on top." Both Namiko and Hinata failed to hide their giggles at Naruto's half-hearted glare toward Sasuke.
Hinata joined Naruto at the boat's edge, pointing over the side. "Oh look! A dolphin…and another!"
Namiko went to stand next to Hinata for a better look. "Wow! They're so beautiful!"
"Hey! Look! There's a midget one!" pointed out Naruto.
Sasuke smacked him on the back of the head as he walked past him, looking over the side of the boat. "You moron, that's a baby dolphin…"
Naruto rubbed the back of his head. "…oh. That makes more sense."
Namiko laughed loudly. "Really, nii-chan? Sometimes I don't know where you come up with this stuff—oh!" She stopped short, her hands immediately splaying across her belly. "I guess they don't like it when I laugh loud."
At Hinata's curious look, Namiko held out her hand to Hinata. "Give me your hand." Hinata placed her hand on Namiko's, who then placed it on her stomach. "I've felt little flutters here and there, but lately it's been stronger and you can feel them outside a little bit."
Hinata felt the tiny little thumps against her palm, locking eyes momentarily with Namiko. "That's amazing…" she smiled, her eyes wide in wonderment. "I know I've been able to see them, but this is different."
"Oh that reminds me," began Namiko, "can you tell if they're boys or girls yet?"
Hinata nodded, eyes still focused on her hand. "Are you wanting to know still?"
Namiko glanced back at Sasuke who gave a singular nod of affirmation. "I'm dying to know. I kept meaning to ask you but Kurenai-sensei wasn't kidding when she talked about pregnancy brain making you feel like a fool and forgetting things constantly." She saw Naruto open his mouth to tease her and she pointed her finger threateningly at him. "Don't you even start."
"Damn, imouto, you already have the 'mom look' down," he replied. "It's kinda scary."
"Good. I should have it nailed down after being your sister for sixteen years," she said, rolling her eyes.
Hinata stifled a giggle as she removed her hand. "It's one girl and one boy."
Namiko turned to Sasuke, smiling brightly as she hugged him. "The best of both worlds." Sasuke kissed her forehead and her smile suddenly fell as she looked at Hinata. "Wait! You didn't use your Byakugan just now!" She put her hands on her hips. "How long have you known?"
"Right after you two got married," replied Hinata timidly. "But I didn't want to say anything until you asked. I couldn't tell Naruto because he would blurt it out in a second."
"That's been almost a month! But how did you know?" asked Namiko curiously.
Hinata blushed from embarrassment. "I worry about you since Tsunade-sama said you were high risk, so I've…checked on them periodically when you're not paying attention."
Namiko laid a gentle hand on Hinata's shoulder, bringing her into a hug. "That's sweet. One of the many reasons I love you and I'm thankful you're my best friend."
Hinata's blush faded as the hug ended and she perked up a little. "Do you want to know which is which?" At Namiko's enthusiastic nod, she continued, this time using her Byakugan, "The boy is on your left and seems to be the calmer one. The girl is on your right, up a little higher, and seems to move a lot."
"So she's been the little butterfly I keep feeling then," said Namiko warmly as she patted the right side of her stomach.
Hinata nodded, her smile softening. "It's a good sign. It means she's strong." She paused, her gaze turning thoughtful. "They both are. You've got two little fighters in there."
A tender look crossed Namiko's face. "Two…I still can't believe it sometimes." Her voice wavered just slightly, but she quickly masked it with a smile. "I'm going to be a mom...twice over."
Naruto clapped his hands together, breaking the moment with his usual enthusiasm. "I bet they're going to be stronger than anyone else, especially with their Uzumaki bloodline! Right, Sasuke?" He grinned widely, looking to his friend for approval.
"I think you mean because of their Uchiha bloodline," said Sasuke, his lips twitching into a cocky smirk. "They'll definitely be stronger than you."
Naruto shot him a glare, but before he could retort, Hinata spoke up, placing her hand on Naruto's chest, "I'm sure the twins will have both clans' strengths, each in their own way. Maybe they'll get the Uzumaki chakra reserves and the Sharingan?"
Namiko glanced at Sasuke, noticing his smirk falter slightly. She knew that while the Sharingan was incredibly powerful, it was usually acquired by traumatic experiences and influenced by strong emotions. She ran her hand down his forearm and squeezed his hand slightly.
Naruto, noting the non-verbal exchange between his sister and best friend, cleared his throat and broke the silence with his typical enthusiasm. "So, who gets to train them when they're older? No matter what, I'm definitely teaching them Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
"There's already going to be two of them at one time, I don't need dozens more of them." Namiko chuckled softly. "Plus, who knows if they'll even want to be shinobi?"
Naruto's brow furrowed. "Of course they will be! Their uncle will be Hokage! And their dad is a half-decent shinobi too, I guess," Naruto teased, earning him a glare from Sasuke.
"Not everyone wants to be a shinobi, Naruto, not even in a shinobi family," said Namiko quietly, her mood suddenly deflating.
"Why not? Being a shinobi is awesome! I feel like a badass every day," Naruto replied with a grin, flexing his arm.
Sasuke shook his head, slightly amused at Naruto's antics, but gave Namiko's hand a reassuring squeeze. He remembered what she told him a few months ago; she never wanted to be a shinobi but did it for Naruto. "They'll have choices, idiot. And that's the point."
Namiko nodded, her gaze distant. "I want them to be able to decide for themselves. We've grown up in the world of shinobi, trained to protect the village, and I'm proud of that. But if they choose a different path, I'm okay with that too." She smiled softly, her hand drifting to her stomach. "I want them to be happy and safe more than blindly follow in our footsteps ."
Hinata nodded, understanding in her gentle eyes. "They'll be lucky to have both of you supporting them, whatever they decide."
Naruto scratched his head, clearly still wrapping his mind around the idea. "I guess that makes sense…but if they do want to be shinobi, you know I'll be there to teach them everything I know! And they'd have you two as parents—no one's going to mess with them."
Sasuke smirked, his tone dry. "Good luck convincing Namiko to let you teach them anything, especially Rasengan."
"Hey!" Naruto protested, crossing his arms. "They'd be unstoppable with my training!"
Namiko laughed, her spirit lifted by the playful banter. "One thing's for sure—they'll have a family that loves them, shinobi or not."
They settled into a warm silence, each of them absorbing the possibilities of the future as the sun set on the horizon. Hinata glanced at Namiko, her voice soft but steady. "Whatever they become, they'll know they're surrounded by people who will protect them at any cost."
"Thank you…" Namiko's eyes shimmered, and she leaned her head against Sasuke's shoulder. In that moment, surrounded by those she loved most, she knew that no matter what the future held, her children would grow up in a world where they were loved beyond belief.
A yawn escaped from Namiko and she looked up at Sasuke as he squeezed her shoulder gently. "You've had a long day; we all have. Maybe you should go rest for the night."
She sighed. "I'm honestly not going to argue with that."
Naruto was surrounded by a brilliant orange-yellow light, and it took Namiko several moments before she realized he was surrounded by chakra…the kyuubi's chakra. The amount of the kyuubi's chakra was massive and Naruto seemed to be floating in the head of the kyuubi.
Suddenly, a chain wrapped around the kyuubi's neck and jerked it forward, sending Naruto flying out of the kyuubi's chakra and to the ground. His eyes were glazed over and his chest stilled.
She tried to move, trying to reach him in any way she could, but her legs refused to cooperate. She was completely frozen. Tears streaked down Namiko's cheeks as she watched helplessly.
The scene changed and Namiko watched in horror as Sasuke was run through the chest with a sword, crumpling to the ground. He raised his head to glare at his attacker, though Namiko couldn't see them.
"I'm not dying. I can't…die yet." He yelled in pain as he crept forward. "I can't allow Itachi's life to have…been in vain. This war has to end." Blood dripped down his chin as a cough wracked his body, his voice becoming only audible to Namiko, "I won't let my children be born in a war. They should never know these…horrors. I…can't—" He collapsed, blood pooling around him. "—die."
The silence that followed was deafening. Namiko fell down onto her knees beside his body as tears streamed down her cheeks. She tried to scream, but it felt like her lungs had stopped working, she couldn't even breathe.
She stared at her blood-stained hands as someone began to shake her. "…Namiko?" A muffled voice called out.
"Namiko, I need you to wake up. Open your eyes."
Namiko's eyes snapped open to see red. Sasuke's Sharingan. A broken, heavy sob escaped her mouth as she threw her arms around him. "You're alive…" she whispered as she pulled back, her hands caressing the sides of his face.
She kissed him, and he tasted the saltiness of her tears on his lips. "I'm right here, Namiko, I'm not going anywhere," he said as he used his thumb to wipe away her tears.
A realization hit her and she looked around, panicked. "Naruto! Where's Naruto? Is he okay?"
"I'm right here, imouto," said Naruto from behind them, Hinata peering around his shoulder.
Namiko's shoulders deflated in relief and she scrambled off the futon, throwing her arms around her brother, who stood in the doorway. He returned the hug, placing his hand on the back of her head, and stroking her hair soothingly. He rarely saw Namiko so engulfed in fear. "What happened? That seemed like one hell of a nightmare."
Namiko swallowed back her tears. "You and Sasuke both died in front of me." Another tear slipped free and she slowly wiped it away with the heel of her palm. "And there was nothing I could do to stop it."
Sasuke stood and she quickly glued herself to his side. He kissed her forehead tenderly, tilting her head up to look him in the eyes, his Sharingan no longer active. "We're both fine and it was just a horrible nightmare. Nothing bad is going to happen to us."
"You can't guarantee that," she said, her brow furrowing in worry.
"Namiko," started Naruto softly, "Sasuke and I watch out for each other. Nothing can touch us when we've got each other's back, ya know?"
Sasuke tried to hide a scoff. "He's right. No matter what comes, I know Naruto has my back and I have his. We'll be fine. Please stop worrying."
Namiko sighed. "I'm sorry, it just…it felt so real." She tightened her hold on Sasuke's waist as if afraid he might disappear. "I don't think I could survive losing either of you."
Sasuke's arms wrapped firmly around Namiko, pulling her closer. "You won't lose us," he said with quiet certainty. "Not now, not ever."
Naruto ruffled her hair with a lopsided grin as he headed toward the door, Hinata at his side. "Geez, you've got to stop watching us get our butts kicked in your dreams, imouto. It's bad for morale."
Namiko let out a shaky laugh, her face buried against Sasuke's chest. The faint beat of his heart was a comforting reminder that he was here—alive. "How can I not worry? You two are always reckless," she muttered, trying to mask her lingering fear with a half-hearted glare at Naruto.
"We're not reckless," Naruto shot back, folding his arms. "We're strategic."
Sasuke raised an eyebrow, his lips twitching into a subtle smirk. "Making copies of yourself and praying it works out doesn't exactly scream 'strategy'."
"Hey!" Naruto protested, pointing an accusing finger at Sasuke. "At least I don't brood my way through fights like someone I know."
Namiko couldn't help but chuckle at their banter, the heaviness in her chest easing slightly. This was familiar. This was normal. "You two are ridiculous," she said, her tone filled with affection.
Naruto grinned. "Yeah, but you love us."
She nodded, her expression softening. "I really do."
Sasuke kissed the top of her head and whispered, "And we love you. Always."
Naruto let out an exaggerated groan. "Alright, I'm gonna leave before you two start getting all mushy again." He winked at Namiko before turning to leave, ushering Hinata out ahead of him. "Try to get some rest, okay? You've got both of us watching your back, so no more nightmares."
As they disappeared down the hallway, Namiko glanced up at Sasuke. "Do you think he's right?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "That nothing can touch you two?"
Sasuke's expression turned serious, but his voice remained steady. "I can't promise nothing bad will ever happen. But I can promise that I'll fight to my last breath to protect you and Naruto. You and our family mean everything to me."
She leaned into him, closing her eyes as the tension in her body finally began to ease. 'Maybe I am worrying for nothing.'
A/N: I'm back! Thank you all for your well wishes; I truly enjoyed my trip last weekend, but I'm happy to get back into writing. I should be able to update next weekend too, so it won't be long before we see Naruto and Namiko's reactions to seeing their mom.
See you guys next week!
Love,
Eriisu
