Chapter 26:Secrets of the Unown
The night fell quickly. It felt like it was taking them forever to get to Ecruteak City. There seemed to be some force that just continually prevented them from progressing. The trio couldn't seem to identify it. As the night sky darkened, they elected to try to sleep and hopefully they could arrive at the city within a day. Kathy's complaining seemed to increase as well. Phillip noticed that she hadn't been quite herself since they left the National Park and started making their way towards Ecruteak City.
The night was silent and darker than usual. An odd humming sound could be sensed in the air. The usual night sounds seemed to have stopped. As the group slept Kathy's backpack began to shake. A Pokeball rolled out. Once out of the bag Drowzee popped out of his Pokeball. He began making his way south towards Route 36. Tyrogue was laying next to Phillip and woke up when he heard Drowzee. Tyrogue called out to him, but Drowzee ignored him and kept going south.
Tyrogue woke Phillip up, and called out to everyone. As they woke up Tyrogue was shouting and pointing south. Once they came to their senses and realized that Drowzee was missing they took off in the direction Drowzee went. After grabbing all their stuff and chasing after Drowzee they ended up on Route 36. They looked to the right and to the left in the distance they saw Drowzee's silhouette in the night. Kathy reached for his Pokeball to recall him, but by time she looked up he descended into a cave at the end of the road.
They ran after him. Kathy led the way and without even thinking about it she ran right into a pitch-black cave. After Phillip several yards into the cave he stopped because he couldn't see his hand in front of him. He heard a slam a few feet in front of him, accompanied by Kathy's scream. Phillip called out Mareep.
"Flash attack Mareep!"
As Phillip closed his eyes a blinding wave of light rebounded off the walls and lit up the cave. The trio followed the wave of light. The cave stayed lit up. There was still a dark hole in the cave. As they approached the hole a black Pokemon with a thin, flat body that looked like an ancient letter flew out of the hole. Nathan scanned it with his Pokedex.
Unown, This Pokémon is shaped like ancient writing. It is a mystery as to which came first, the ancient writings or the various Unown. Research into this topic is ongoing but nothing is known. Shaped like ancient writing, it is a huge mystery whether language or Unown came first. When alone, nothing happens. However, if there are two or more, an odd power is said to emerge.
As Phillip stepped up to the dark hole, hundreds of Unown flew off the wall. As they flew down the cave, they saw Drowzee. Kathy recalled Drowzee. A light rebounded off him and he continued walking. The trio continued into the cave. Their were images all over the walls. Phillip was captivated by them.
The image Phillip was staring at was of several largePokemon, one resembled a dragon, a plesiosaur, and a bird. It had a point on the back of its head. The other was an avian Pokemonresembling a phoenix and a peacock. They were facing off against one another as if locked in a battle.
The pleiosaur looking one had water and ice surrounding it, and the phoenix looking one was surrounded by fire. Just above both was a massively long dragon that looked like a snake and a missile. It had two large arms with three massive talons and two horns on its head. Something about was familiar to Phillip. Just below the two birds was a picture of three beasts. They were made up of different elements, fire, ice and electricity.
The fire looking quadrupedal resembled a lion of some sort. The ice looking quadrupedal was a slim looking mammalian beast that was marked by diamonds and a mane that flew behind it. The electric looking quadrupedal looked like a sabertoothed tiger that had an electric bolt for a tale. Phillip stared until Nathan called him out of his trance.
Phillip shook his head as if trying to come back to reality. He remembered what they were doing and took off deeper into the cave behind Kathy. They crossed through a tunnel when Drowzee was frozen and unable to move. Kathy ran to grab him when she was ambushed by a Spinarak and a Sableye. They cut her off from Nathan and Phillip.
Phillip and Nathan tried to run around Spinarak when they slammed into a wall of Unown. They surrounded them. A loud screeching noise forced Phillip to one knee when Zubat firing a powerful supersonic wave was rebounding off the walls of the cave, as if controlling the Unown. Brett and Betty emerged from the shadows and began their rhyme talking about the highest heights. Betty was laughing hysterically at the sight of everyone being paralyzed. Kathy reached for her Exeggcute, but before she could summon him Spinarak webbed her up. Brett laughed.
"You twerps always have to meddle in our affairs, but not today. Today we will use these Unown and summon the legendary Entei. Then we will capture him and become the boss' favorite duo."
Brett and Betty laughed in unison. Phillip used the momentary distraction call out Mareep.
"Electroball attack Mareep!"
A powerful ball of lightning zipped past Spinarak and Sableye. They were flung down by the speed of it. The ball of lightning ricocheted off of two walls and slammed into a tall, blue sleeping cyan Pokemon. The Pokemon popped up and went berserk. It screamed out.
"WOBBUFFET!"
After screaming it chased after Brett, Betty, Spinarak, Zubat and Sableye. Team Rocket ran deep into the cave. The psychic waves ceased and the Unown scattered onto the walls. After the Unown scattered, Drowzee gained consciousness and began looking around confused. Phillip and Nathan were able to move again.
As everyone was regaining their bearings Kathy ran to Drowzee and gave him a big hug. As she let go the blue Pokemon that chased Team Rocket away returned. Nathan scanned it with his Pokedex.
"Wobbuffet, It hates light and shock. If attacked, it inflates its body to pump up its counterstrike. It desperately tries to keep its black tail hidden. This behavior is said to be proof that its tail hides a secret."
As soon as the Pokedex finished Wobbuffet charged at Drowzee and Kathy. Drowzee pushed Kathy out of the way. Wobbuffet slammed into Drowzee, forcing him to crash into the wall of the cave. Drowzee got up slowly. Phillip started to rush to Kathy's aid when she raised her left hand.
"I got this."
Wobbuffet was dragging its right foot on the ground as if it was getting ready to charge again.
"Disable attack Drowzee!"
Drowzee moved its hands to the sides of its head and Wobbuffet began to float. Unable to charge.
"Now Psybeam attack!"
Drowzee's eyes changed. Wobbuffet tumbled back to the ground. As the Wobbuffet landed it was struck with a powerful psychic beam. Kathy prepared to throw a Pokeball. Wobbuffet cast some sort of spell. A shadowy form of Wobbuffet floated over to Drowzee. Drowzee slammed down on the ground just like Wobbuffet did. Phillip shouted out.
"That was Destiny Bond. Whatever happens to Wobbuffet will happen Drowzee."
Kathy bit her lip. She thought of Phillip has said in the past. 'If you're going to get stronger you will have to push past your comfort and limits.' Kathy took a breath.
"Zen Headbutt Drowzee!"
Drowzee floated over to Wobbuffet and slammed down on it head first. Kathy's Pokeball flew right at Wobbuffet. The ball rolled around and Wobbuffet decided to stay in it. As Kathy ran to celebrate with Drowzee the Unown cut her off. They began to surround Drowzee. They swirled around him like a tornado. A mighty Confusion attack sent all the Unown back to the walls. Drowzee had evolved into Hypno!
Nathan scanned Hypno with his Pokedex.
"Hypno, When it locks eyes with an enemy, it will use a mix of psi moves, such as Hypnosis and Confusion. Always holding a pendulum that it swings at a steady rhythm, it causes drowsiness in anyone nearby."
Phillip congratulated Kathy as sun began to pour into the cave. Morning had come. They all made their back towards camp. Phillip turned back around as he passed the portrait of the Pokemon he was staring at earlier.
"Hey guys… why don't you go ahead. I would like to stay behind and investigate this some more."
"But the Fog Badge. Were almost there Phillip." Nathan said.
"I'll meet you guys."
Nathan stared annoyed. Kathy rolled her eyes and drug Nathan towards the exit.
"Come on."
Phillip made his way back to the image and then called Professor Elm. He was captivated by this image. Something about it was familiar, yet foreign. It reminded him of the vision he had in the forest. He needed answers. This seemed like the kind of scholarly thing that Professor Elm would run to. What could all this mean?
