Chapter 8: Danger...
Just when she thought her day couldn't get any worse, she saw a guy from afar walking his merry way on the sidewalk. Her heart thumped, the heartbeat noise increasing by the second. His back was facing her, but he had little brown dreads, which meant it could possibly be Dewey looking for her ass at this instant. She was positive it was him.
Her glare must had been intense, as the supposed Dewey turned around, probably feeling watched. That specific moment gave Cindy McPhearson a peek of his face and the fear she once had, dropped. Oh, it was just some random nigga. At that thought, there came out a sigh of relief. A shaking hand got up to her head and rubbed her throbbing temples.
This was ridiculous. A week passed and she had received no updates of Dewey's whereabouts, and it was not sitting well for her. It was not normal of her to still be roaming around the streets in one piece, after she had escaped from his turf. His goons should be searching through the city for her white-ass, but nothing, I tell ya. 168 hours had been peaceful, too peaceful. It worried her so much, that she had to skip school and avoid all contact of her friends, including Jazmine.
The girl had left her more than 50 voicemails and 20 text messages. A pang of guilt punched her in the gut. Cindy was aware how worrisome her best-friend was, and it was understandable - she went completely ghost right after they'd gotten into a fight. She had no choice, they had no idea how Dewey was capable of causing so much destruction in their lives. He could be rigging their phones, hiring goons to disguise themselves as one of the students in their school. There wasn't just Jazmine, there was also Huey and Riley.
They had also tried to reach out to her, but she didn't even bother to respond back to their messages. Their asses were the reason why she was this much in deep shit. Granted, they had always had her back, but contacting them was not safe. It was too risky. Wherever they went, Dewey was always one step ahead with a plan to sabotage them.
If he wanted something done, he'd get it done. Believe it or not.
Cindy stopped before as she reached a busy intersection, and waited for the walk sign to light up so she can cross the street.
She bit her upper lip, thoughts after thoughts pouring in her mind. This was no doubt Huey's work. He must'd talked the nigga out into letting her off for the time being. It was no coincidence that she was still alive after Huey had promised her that he'd protect her and Jaz from his wrath. She gave the gang-lord another few days before he cracks and executes his next move.
After what seemed like forever, the adjacent spotlight turned red and rows of cars stopped before the crosswalk line. The orange hand sign disappeared and there showed up the walk sign, allowing the blond gal to cross the street. She carefully did so and surveyed her surroundings. Her eyes jumped from one car to the other. There it was. Paranoia got her. One of those car drivers could be Dewey or one of his thugs and they might ignore the red light and run over her. An image of her lying on her puddle of blood got her walking fast, that not even the roadrunner could succeed to surpass her speed. Even though she was on the other side of the road, she was still shaking.
Your home-girl was going nuts. It was like he was everywhere, watching her every move. Fuck. If he was really here witnessing her current state, he'd be laughing his ass right now. She groaned. She lacked sleep, and you could all guess why. He might be coming to retrieve her at any second and she was tired of hiding and waiting. This was a twisted game for him.
Calm down Cindy. Calm down, she chanted to herself. Right on that note, she accidentally bumped into someone, so hard, that she fell on her butt.
"Shit..." she murmured while she got up, "Nigga, didn't you see where yo ass was go-"
Her firecrackin' attitude vanished into thin air, and she could thank the person who was standing before her. Her eyes were locked on a pair of unique dark brown eyes.
She knew to whom they belonged.
"R-Riley!?" she couldn't believe this. "The fuck you doin here?"
He snorted, "Bitch, don't act all mad on me. You went ghost on a nigga for a week, and you think I'm not gonna do nothin' bout that? Especially when I know dat gay, fake-ass mofo looking for your ass." He glared all up on her, like as if he was the victim in this situation, which pissed Cindy off. He had no right to act all mad and shit, she was the one who was gonna get killed if Dewey found her, and this all happened because of this fool and his brother.
She grabbed him by the arm and pulled him along to some nearby alley. Then slapped him upside the head. "Nigga, who you think you calling a bitch? You betta watch your tone before I smack the shit outta you, and baby-" she slowly walked up to him, the tip of their noses were practically an inch away from each other. "It ain't gonna be with a belt this time, I can guarantee you that!"
He sucked on his teeth, "Cindy, I'm being serious here. You have to stop running around the streets like this. Do you seriously think that nobody's talking about chu? How do you think I feel to hear one of my niggas talking shit about chu sleeping in the streets?"
Cindy lowered her head for a second, her eyes firmly shut. Oh-uh. She knew where he was getting at. She wished it was some sick rumor, but it wasn't. It was true, she had been sleeping in random alleys for the past week, in hopes that Dewey wouldn't find her. It was that bad. The fear of getting caught was driving her crazy. She knew people, which was one - or possibly the only - props of being a prostitute, but she'd be putting herself in an even bigger debt if she'd get them involved into this mess.
Her back was killing her from sleeping on the concrete ground, her body reeked garbage, but she'd be damned to give up and admit defeat. "I don't care, I'll do whatever it takes to get the fuck away from Dewey - even if I'd have to sleep near a garbage disposal."
Riley was obviously annoyed by her stubbornness, the constant scalp-scratching said so. "Not even if we's willing to let you crash with us?"
He had got to be kidding her. "I must have accidentally hit you in the head when I whooped yo ass, cuz you're speaking stupid," she placed her hand on his forehead to check if he was thinking right, but he put her hand down.
"Cindy," his tone suggested that she'd better not play with him, or else.
She straightened up, slightly. Her back was still sore from last night. "What? Foreal, that'd be the first place Dewey would check. And may I add that I ain't gonna be around those who've gotten me into this shit in the first place."
"That's it," Riley grabbed her shoulders and viciously whirled her around, now pushing her against the cold, brick wall. Her confidence plummeted beneath his dark stare, those dark irises of his looking down through her broken soul. He was the only person ever to have the ability to witness her vulnerability, the one thing Cindy attempted so hard to hide. "You gotta stop blaming us for everything. We weren't the ones who forced you to become a hoe. You chose to do it, not because of me nor Huey, but because you wanted to support your family. You could have just gotten a normal job. Hell, the McDonald's near my area is still looking for a full-time crew member, but nooo, yo ass wanted that pay check fat and quick. Your choices landed you into this problem. Not me. Not Huey."
Cindy growled, "but-"
"Listen, did we ask you to become Dewey's hoe? No, you could have just let us handle it, since he came for us in the first place. Not you. You didn't have anything to do with this bullshit. You just got yourself involved, for nothing. Yes, you probably did it for your lightskin home-girl, but we were gonna step in anyway to protect her, the last thing we want is people causing complications and having their blood in our hands. And yes, maybe you did it to get him off our backs, but that wasn't your problem to begin with. So stop with the bitchin and assume the consequences that came with your choices like a grown-ass woman. Damn."
Head lowered, she growled once more, but remained silent.
Just the way Riley liked. "What's dat? Got nothin to say, huh? That's what I thought..."
It was easy for him to say, he didn't understand the feeling of failure and guilt. She had done so many things that had obviously made her father and grandmother disappointed. Living with such burden could have been bearable if she was guaranteed her mother's love. But nothing was guaranteed, not even her well-being.
It was some time before the silence was broken. "...This isn't fair." As soon as she lifted her head, Riley had to look away, the heartbreak was so evident on her face.
However, he placed a comforting hand on her cheek, slightly stroking it. Life isn't fair baby girl, he thought.
What the fuck, Cindy thought. She was so not used to this gentle side of his. It freaked her out. She cleared her out, which seemed to have snapped the boy out of trance, by the way he pulled his hand away from her face. "You're just gonna stand there and not help a home-girl out?"
"Oh..." he realized with a lost look, "Bitch, what am I doin' here again?"
"Nigga, are you foreal right now?" her shoulders drooped down, in loss of hope. He was definitely back to his old, clueless self. A part of her was glad, but a part of her wanted another glimpse of his soft side.
His soft side gave her a little bit of hope - hope that everything would be alright.

"Hey, Huey."
For a second, the aforementioned man stopped fixing the 400CC bike, the quirk of his eyebrow indicating that he was all ears. "Yes?"
"Where yo girls at? I wanna chop em asap, because damn - they are just too fine," he hummed and licked his fingers good like he was about to feast. "Can't wait to get a taste of dat vanilla and caramel, na'mean?"
Huey didn't hesitate to throw his co-worker the biggest scowl known to mankind. "Do you realize that you just licked your fingers - the very same fingers that you used to clean dirt off that bike?"
"..." And that was his cue to refrain himself from all that nonsense talk and focus on the task at hand - fixing the bikes.
Huey rolled his eyes. The boy was talking nonsense, the fact that he thought the girls would come back to the Moto Shop after everything that had happened just proved his stupidity. Their nosy selves got him into deep shit. He thought he was in big trouble after him along his brother fled Chicago, but this took the cake.
He couldn't help but sigh, the stress taking a toll on him. His body was there, doing what he was supposed to do, changing the engine oil, scanning the vehicle to make sure that it was using the right spark plug type and grade. But his mind was elsewhere.
Flashback - a week ago...
As his laughs were finally replaced by silence, Dewey straightened up, throwing his cig on the ground and stepping on the bud with the heel of his foot. "It's obvious this conversation is going nowhere. You too stubborn to dip back in your crew, therefore I'll be keeping my precious blond object..." His demonic smile showed up. "And I might add a certain mulatto doll to my collection."
"I thought you might say that," Huey's lips twitched into a smile that was similar as Dewey's, but with a higher level of demonic darkness. "Which is why I'm warning you that if you lay a finger on those girls, then I'd have no choice but to kill you."
This side of Huey peeked Dewey's interest into a whole new level. "Oh? What happened to the Saint who didn't want to kill anymore?"
"You're life isn't exactly worth anything, no matter how much you try to make it worthwhile." If he could, Huey would have laughed by how deep his comment had stung Dewey's ego.
His scowl did no justice. "Oh, yeah?"
Huey's amusement dimmed as he watched his former boss pull out a glock from the back of his jeans and point it towards him. "Are you really going to threaten me now?" he asked, in a bored tone. He wasn't intimated by his action, even if he had just walked up to him and pressed the cold mouth of his M9 handgun against his cheek.
End of Flashback...
Great. It was obvious now that Dewey was going to come again, just to spite him. If maybe Huey hadn't stung his ego back there, then he would have let the girls' go about their lives.
Then again, the gang leader wouldn't be himself if he did so. When he wanted something, he'd do anything to get it. Even if it'd cost him some blood.
"Shit," the thought unintentionally slipped from his mouth. He couldn't concentrate for shit right now, there was no point in trying to deal with this motorbike. He got up from his knee, all the while dusting off the dirt and soil from his work attire. "Guys, I'm gonna be outside for half an hour." Just when his coworker was about to say a word, Huey had already left the premises.
He might as well use this time to relax, he had been working for 4 hours straight. He couldn't even remember if he ate lunch yet - and as soon as the boy stepped out and faced the darkness, he knew right and there lunch time had passed hours ago.
He whipped out his phone, groaning as his shift wouldn't end for another 3 hours. His job was what paid the bills, but it could've been a lot more tolerable if the customers were to cooperate and not throw a fit. Huey could go on and on about those lame excuse of human beings, but the vibration of his phone distracted his string of profanities.
An unknown number appeared on the screen.
It could be anyone at this point.
Possibly Dewey.
He hadn't heard from the man for a week. Both of his eyes were glaring daggers on the bold number. Actually, it was odd that he hadn't receive any word from him, no threats, nothing. That was a bad sign. He was definitely planning something big. Huey was tempted to decline the call, but his thumb had a mind of its own, for it pressed the accept button. Making sure it wasn't on speaker, his eyes darted left and right, thankfully no eavesdroppers were in sight.
"Hello," he cautiously started.
"Hey."
A weight was lifted from his shoulder. "Riley, why are you calling me from this number?"
"Nigga, dat ain't your business."
Huey rolled his eyes. Typical imbecile. "Keep in mind that we have a vengeful gang-lord on a hunt for our blood. Of course I'm gonna worry about that."
"Yeah yeah, a fake-ass, bitch-ass nigga who's gay for our asses. I know that already. Look McHater, I don't have time to deal with yo emo-ass, so lemme get straight to da point. I found Cindy-"
At that point, Huey automatically straightened up.
"- and she's alive."
He sighed in relief. "Go on..."
"Dat's what I was gonna do McHater," he sucked on his teeth before going on. "But yeah, she's alive and there's no way in hell that I'm gonna leave her sleeping in some alley."
The ex-gangster grew quiet. It made sense that she used an alley as her hideout. Her house was no longer an option, as the devil probably went there first thing. His heart stopped for a second. "Riley, where is her Mom?"
"Hold up."
Huey heard whispers on the other line, which he assumed were both Cindy and Riley discussing about the matter. He recalled the girl telling him that she lived with her mother, which was not good. Dewey could no doubt use that to his advantage. "Well?"
There was some shuffling going on, like the two were fighting to claim the phone. Then it stopped for a while. "Look Huey, my Mom is fine...probably on her knees right now, suckin her pimp's dick."
"You're not one to talk, you sold your body to the bastard."
What he said was a low-blow, he could even sense Riley in the background hissing from the burn. But Cindy didn't let that get to her. "Hahaha very funny Freeman, you're quite the comedian."
Huey rolled his eyes, "I tried."
"Now what does my Momma have to do with this?" she hurried.
"Well Dewey is probably looking for you as we speak, and the first thing he'll do is stop by your place and go through everything, and I mean everything. If your mom were to be there, she could get killed. Not just your Mom, but also your close friends. He's probably scoping your friends place, your school, the possibility is endless."
Cindy sighed, anyone can just sense the lack of sleep from that one sigh. "I know Huey, I was thinking of leaving town for a while, until the heat is gone, na'mean?"
"No, that's a bad idea. How are you gonna survive our there? You know nobody outside of Woodcrest. Look Cindy, for now you're just gonna have to stay with us."
"Boy, are you crazy? Dewey may be crazy, but he ain't stupid. He's gonna want to scope out your place once he knows that I'm not at my place."
He grabbed the bridge of his nose. The girl was driving him nuts, couldn't she see that he was offering a lending hand here? "You're going to have no choice but to trust me.
" But-"
"Do you want to live or die?"
There was a moment of hesitation. "...Fine."
He nodded, "Good."
"But what about Jazmine? She's just as much involved in this as I am, and there's no way in hell that I'm gonna keep leaving her in the dark...especially if her life is on the line."
She was right. Huey totally forgot about Mariah Carey. They do see each other at school, but it tended to be awkward. Ever since she accidentally admitted that she liked him, he distanced himself from her. He was slowly opening up to her, and it was not at all a smart move. She was now involved in this mess. Her life was now his priority. Shit. If one of his gang-member, or even Riley, were to hear him now, they'd say that this place was getting him soft.
He scowled. He was already regretting what he was about to say next.
:*´¨`*:.•.¸¸.•´¯`•.+/-.•´¯`•.¸¸.•.:*´¨`*:
DreadzIsMyThang: So, what have you been up to lately?
JazzyFresh: Nothing much.
DreadzIsMyThang: Are you sure? Because right now, I feel like I'm talking to a robot instead of girl who's usually a ball of sunshine :/
JazzyFresh: Trust me, I'm fine. Now, I gotta go, bye :)
Her computer screen closed, with a click on the shutdown option. She threw her head back, as of now focusing on her bedroom ceiling. A breath of pure stress fled her lips. People would have preferred to lie to someone virtually, since they weren't obligated to watch the other blow everything out of proportion. But Jazmine DuBois disagreed to that, very much.
She felt bad for lying to her good friend Caesar, but then again, it wasn't like he was the only person whom she lied to. She'd been lying to her peers, and that was something she'd never in a million years do - well, except for now, obviously.
It had taken her only a week to consider herself as a good liar. Some may say that they were proud of the little lamb for finally growing a backbone, but she felt like she was slowly losing a grip of herself, and it had all started right after the day that she had fought with Cindy.
Right after that day, her best-friend hadn't been showing up to school, and Jazmine didn't know if she should call the authorities and hold a search party. Jazmine didn't know where she was, or if she was even okay. She received no text or phone call from the white gal. And do you know what the weirdest part was?
Her English teacher didn't even bat an eye at Cindy's absence. You'd think he'd worry, with how he was with her and their constant after-school discussions. Jazmine was going to have a little talk with that guy about Cindy, either he knew something or he just didn't care enough to be concerned, which was bad if it were the case. In less than a week, finals exams were coming up, for Jesus Christ. It was his duty to contact her and urge her to get back in class.
Not only Cindy, but Jazmine's parents had also been acting up lately. The days when her parents would feed themselves with love and affection were over. Dead. Long gone. It was like the love was never there. Nowadays, they just endlessly bicker at each other. They were some arguments that were close to getting physical, but her Dad would just get up and leave for like a day or two, surely to vent off steam.
Furthermore, there was something about her Mom, but Jazmine was having a hard time to pinpoint it.
With a sigh, she pushed herself from the computer table and stood up, starting her walk towards her bedroom door. From the corner of her eye, she noticed her favorite book sitting on the night table, and soon her steps were redirected away from the door, and towards her bed.
The teenager jumped and landed on her bed with a flop, then reached for her favorite Disney book, Cinderella. She might as well read it. She needed all the cheering up she could get, and this prized possession would do the job. She opened the book, and flipped over through pages. She knew this story by heart.
A girl lost her parents, and so she was put in her wicked aunt's place, and she was treated like crap, by her twin cousins. She slaved herself, and in the end, she was rewarded with a prince and a good life. The end. That was basically the plot of the book. This was probably going to be the billionth time that Jazmine read this book, but this was her first time that she read it, in a totally different perspective.
She found it...weird.
The cuteness was gone.
It was just unnatural, with the way everything turned out perfect for Cinderella. The ending was too perfect.
Jazmine pondered, biting the inside of her cheek. Was it really true, that whoever worked their butts off for the good of themselves would prevail? The more she thought about it, the harder it was to believe, especially with Huey's words of wisdom constantly gnawing on her conscious.
Flashback - 2 weeks ago...
"What do you think about the view?"
Huey sighed, "I find it highly false and hypocritical."
Jazmine blinked. That was a first. Not once in her lifetime had she heard someone insult Woodcrest's natural beauty. Her curiosity reached a certain peek. "Why's that? Don't you find it beautiful and peaceful?"
"Indeed, this environment is beautiful. But have you ever stopped to wonder why Woodcrest is so beautiful with the green trees, the clean air, the peacefulness?" Huey pulled out his lighter, along his cigarette, and lit it up. "Because it wants to keep all the citizens from the truth. Think of its beauty as a mask of some sort," he elucidated ever so coolly, taking a drag of his cig. "A mask that hides one's biggest flaw and secret."
Jazmine closed her eyes, letting the soothing wind and smoke surround her. She was aware that standing beside a smoker and inhaling its toxic scent was like second-hand smoking, but she didn't care, she was more concerned about Huey's sentence. "A mask that hides one's biggest flaw and secret," she murmured his sentence to herself, confused. She turned to Huey, "Woodcrest doesn't have any flaws or secrets, whatsoever."
Huey took another drag. "Impossible. Everyone has secrets."
End of Flashback...
Beneath the book's beauty, there laid secrets and that had yet to be answered, like whatever happened to Cinderella's parents and who killed them, or why did her aunt keep her if she could've just taken all of Cinderella's money and kicked her to the curb? Or why did the magical godmother choose the blonde, out of all the other helpless girls in the world?
The more she pondered, the more she questioned on beauty.
Not just the Disney book's beauty, the world's beauty.
"Ah!"
Suddenly, her eyes flew open at once, her heart beating erratically. From the bedroom door emerged a scream that could not possibly be human, so terror-filled and nightmarish it was. The Disney book was no longer sitting on her lap, in actually, it fell on the carpeted floor. Jazmine jumped out of bed and dashed out of her room, continued her way through the hallway and towards the source of the blood-curling scream, who lied helplessly on the ground near the flight of stairs.
"Mom!" She couldn't believe what her eyes were seeing. "Don't move."
Jazmine immediately climbed down the stairs and rushed over to her mother's side. She froze as she got on her knees, horrified by the state she was in. She had never acknowledged how pale and weak her mother had become, it was scary. It was like she was standing in front of a death door, welcoming her to the infinite world of unconsciousness.
"Jazmine...baby, don't worry about me..." Sara panted, "I'm fine..."
For Jazmine, her mother's quiet words came through one ear and left through the other. She couldn't believe her when her condition was showing otherwise. She desperately looked over her shoulder, scanning for any sign of her Dad. "Dad! Dad!" She softly held Sara's head from the back and placed it on her lap, while screaming for help. "Dad, Mom is sick! We need to take her to the hospital, Dad!"
She received no answer, and she couldn't believe this was all suddenly happening. Everything had been fine before, heck, her mother had never shown any sign of being this ill. "S-sweetie, please stop screaming," she struggled to breathe out, "Your father isn't home."
"Wait, what?!"
Sara coughed, almost endlessly. "He's at work."
Anger suddenly boiled up inside Jazmine's core. Out of all the times, he just had to pick today to head on to work early. As a matter of fact, he had been doing that lately, and he'd always come back home super late. Not 8 o'clock late, but midnight type of late. He never was the type to enjoy waking up early, so what was up with him? They were not facing any financial struggle, in fact, at this point there was no need for him to overwork himself.
Just when her gut was suggesting her to go on further into her little investigation, her mother's cough brought her back to reality. "Jazmine, I'm fine. Just please, help me get up. I just fell when I was heading over to the living room."
Jazmine examined closely the blood that dripped out from the corner of her mouth. "Mom, why are you lying to me? You're obviously ill and we gotta get you to the hospital."
"But J-Jazmin-"
She narrowed her eyebrows. "No buts! I'm calling the ambulance now and that's final."
With her Mom's head still on her lap, Jazmine began to massage her temples, in hopes of easing a bit the pain. What was going on? Her life had never been this dramatic before? Jazmine bit her cheek once more, her best friend's previous words suddenly kicking in.
"Girl, don't even start with the crying. You know damn well it's the truth, so yo gotta accept it like a big girl. You have bigger issues to handle than him."
"Girl, don't even start with the crying. You know damn well it's the truth, so yo gotta accept it like a big girl. You have bigger issues to handle than him."
"Girl, don't even start with the crying. You know damn well it's the truth, so yo gotta accept it like a big girl. You have bigger issues to handle than him."
Jazmine shook her head. From Cindy and Huey's words, it was as though they knew this was going to happen.
Like they knew her life was going to turn upside down. She hoped that it was just her usual self overreacting, but for some reason, she felt like it wasn't the case.
She felt as though her life was soon going to be in danger.
