Chapter 640 Clay Ponders His Future

"

Clay was harboring a couple of deep secrets. He hadn't been enthusiastic about the club lunch, but he suspected this was Gemma's way of playing Queen of the Clubhouse. Sometimes he thought she cared more about the gavel than she did him. He'd gone along because he was weak and not really up to fighting with her, although he longed to give her a couple of punches. Her incessant fussing over him like he was an invalid was getting on his nerves.

He'd gone along and plastered an almost happy smile on his face pretending that everything was great, but he was worried he might lose his vote and the president's gavel. His surgeon told him that his recovery would take at least four months given his age and physical condition. If he couldn't ride in eleven weeks, he would lose his vote and the president's gavel.

Jax always said that he would take over the gavel when Clay stepped down, but what if he had to step down to recover from his injuries? After he had a taste of presidential power, would Jax so willingly give up the gavel when he was fit again? He would have to be re-elected president and that wasn't a sure thing. Jax was popular and well-liked. The guys looked up to him. He kept more aloof from the guys as befits a president. That distance might keep him from regaining the gavel. If he had to give up the gavel, he might not get it back and being president was the key to his and Gemma's financial future.

He'd just had a call while he was at the clubhouse from Marcus Alvarez. He wanted the Sons help muling drugs. Normally, he was against drug smuggling from a moral viewpoint and a practical viewpoint—drug crimes draw too much law enforcement heat and stiff jail sentences. Sometimes principles had to be adjusted depending on circumstances. This Mayan deal could set him up for retirement. All they had to do was help out Mayans for a year and he and Gemma would have a comfortable retirement.

The problem was convincing the MC to go along. Most of the guys would be against it. He could count on Tig, Happy and Juice's vote, but the rest of the guys were up for grabs. He knew Jax well enough to know that he would oppose muling drugs. He was losing a lot of his outlaw edge these days and he couldn't see him supporting the muling deal. Hell, he'd be against it if he had another twenty years of MC left in him, but he didn't. He had a year, maybe two at the most before his hands would prevent him from riding.

The little prince was a gigantic pain in his ass. Jax was stubborn and he knew he would never be able to convince him that SAMCRO's future was in the drug muling business, but damn, he needed the big bucks that would bring in.

There was a solution to the Jax problem; Jax needed to die. It was that simple. With Jax dead, he was sure he could keep the gavel and get the club to vote in the drug muling. And Jax was a constant thorn in his side. Life would be better without Jax. As for Gemma, she'd get over it. Her relationship was a little too close with her precious baby boy for his taste anyway. What kind of mother was always hugging and kissing around on their adult kid? He couldn't remember his mother ever kissing him and that's the way it was supposed to be.

He couldn't kill Jax. He'd killed before; that wasn't the problem. He couldn't get caught. Ordering Tig to kill Jax would be tricky. Tig had done some things before but those had always been when the threat to the MC was obvious. He wasn't sure how he was going to spin that Jax was a threat to the club. No, he doubted that he could get Tig to kill Jax.

And then it hit him; a solution to two problems. He could get Buck Jeffers to kill Jax by telling him that Jax was blocking his return to SAMCRO and if he killed him, Mickey Smith would be welcomed back to SAMCRO. Once Jeffers killed Jax, he would have Tig kill Jeffers because he was a threat to the MC. Before he killed Jeffers, he'd have a little talk with him and find out where the proof was that he claimed to have about killing that woman and he'd eliminate Jeffers and the threat he posed to him. It was a perfect plan.

Author's Note: I know you are thinking that Clay's crazy for thinking of using Buck Jeffers to do anything let alone something as tricky as killing Jax, but Clay's not the smartest and he's desperate. And remember back when he put a shotgun to Piney's chest and pulled the trigger? He tried to point the murder at Lobos/Sonora by writing L/S on a picture? Not genius level thinking there. Clay just isn't that smart. He also thinks with his emotions like when he walked the MC into the Zobelle trap despite Jax's warning.

Isn't it kind of odd that he put a shotgun to Piney's chest and shot him and strangely didn't get hit with any blood splatter and his cut stayed blood stain free? It would have been more interesting if Clay had walked in wearing disposable coveralls and a hair covering and Piney realizes what Clay means to do to him. It could have been a chilling moment.

AND ON CHARLIE'S T SHIRT IT SAYS I LOVE JAX. I THOUGHT THAT WAS FUNNY.
