The door opened, and Aizawa walked in. Izuku sat in the metal chair, facing the mirror he suspected was one way glass. Instead of taking the seat across from Izuku, Aizawa merely leaned against the wall.
"Am I being charged with anything?" Izuku was close to tears.
"No." Aizawa said. "In fact, the only reason you're still here is because I wanted to talk."
"Oh." Izuku lowered his head. "Am I being expelled?"
"Did you intend for two students to be harmed?" Aizawa narrowed his eyes.
"What?" Izuku protested. "No! Of course not! I didn't even know that could happen!"
"I have to admit, I didn't think it was possible." Aizawa said. "After all, Monoma's quirk allows him to copy quirks, and you don't have a quirk, do you?"
"W-What?" Izuku paled. He held up the Omnitrix for Aizawa to see.
"I never said you didn't have power." Aizawa elaborated. "I said you're quirkless. I've been reading up on you, Midoriya. You were born quirkless. Until six months ago you were also powerless. Then you stumbled upon that parasite on your arm."
"He's not a parasite!" Izuku nearly shouted, indignation welling within him. The Faceplate of the Omnitrix pulsed green. Izuku's eyes widened as he stared at his arm.
"And that..." Aizawa said softly. "...confirms my other suspicion. That thing is affecting your mind. What it feeds on is unclear, but it is planting foreign emotions into your head. It seems especially bad when you take certain shapes. Especially the fire one."
"You got all that from my records?" Izuku asked skeptically.
"Don't be ridiculous." Aizawa scoffed. "I got all that from observing you. Footage from the sports festival. Your late-night training in the gym."
"You know about that?" Izuku's eyes widened. "I- I mean… I don't-"
"Don't." Aizawa warned. "I have been watching you this last week since you joined my class. I make a point of it to know my students. Which is why I arranged for Yesterday's test."
"I don't- "
"Understand?" Aizawa smirked. "No. I didn't expect you to. I set up the test, because I was missing a crucial piece of the 'Izuku Midoriya' puzzle. In all your training sessions, you never once acted the way you did in the sports festival. In class, you're nothing less than a model student. So why were you so unhinged during the sports festival?"
"I wouldn't say I was unhinged exactly…" Izuku mumbled in embarrassment.
"You're right." Aizawa conceded with a patronizing nod. "You were manic. But that's not the point. In the duration of yesterday's test, even transformed, you never lashed out at Bakugou, or anyone else. Not even at Monoma."
Izuku felt a little unnerved knowing a grown man had been watching him this closely.
"And then there is the matter of your participation in the entrance exam." Aizawa's tone grew softer, more compassionate. "You're not stupid, Midoriya. And though you knew you'd likely fail, you tried anyway. I've been forced to the conclusion that you are a good person, Izuku Midoriya. An idiot at times, yes, but an idiot with the heart of a hero."
"I- I really don't understand what's happening." Izuku admitted.
"I'm telling you that I've decided to give you a chance." Aizawa intoned. "Instead of expelling you. It can't have been easy to go through what you did. I've seen people become villains for far less. Your giant form, Way Big you call him, has enough power alone to be a serious threat. So even after failing the test into your dream career path and being handed all the power you could ever dream of… you chose to try and be a hero anyway. Even though it meant passing tests and going to school, not to mention training."
"I've always wanted to be a hero." Izuku stated. "It's the only thing I've ever wanted. To save people with a smile on my face."
"Right." Aizawa rolled his eyes. He sounds like Toshinori. "Have you entered your internship form?"
"Yes." Izuku nodded. "Though now, I wonder if I should have applied somewhere else."
"I disagree." Aizawa said. "I believe that it will be the best place for you to learn how to act in our society of heroes. And if anything happens, I doubt anyone short of All Might would be better suited to dealing with you."
Izuku stood, bowing deeply to his teacher, who returned the gesture with a nod.
"Get to class." He said. "You don't want to disappoint Cementos. Ironically, he has a soft spot for you."
"Yes sir!" Izuku said, dashing off.
Aizawa shook his head, leaving the UA interview room, turning to the stairs that will lead him to his office. He entered without preamble.
"And?" Toshinori asked, seeming especially weak in his massive suit.
"Exactly as expected." Aizawa said. "He seemed regretful of the situation, yes, but more than anything he seemed crushed with the expectation that he wouldn't be able to fulfil his dream."
"I can't help but wonder if we're making a grave mistake." Toshinori stated.
"You've seen the records, Toshi." Aizawa reminded him.
"And those records omit the origin of the… Omnithing…" Toshinori insisted. "It is altering his mind! You said so yourself. It could still have been made by Him."
"I don't think so." Aizawa shook his head. "Why would He attempt to help a quirkless boy's dream of becoming a hero come true?"
"He could be a sleeper agent!" Toshinori snapped his fingers. "An Inception quirk that can cause him to turn on us with a word! Like the civilians brainwashed into working for the villain Akarou Fukuda."
"In that case it would be better to have him here." Aizawa rolled his eyes. "Where we can keep an eye on his whereabouts and interactions."
Toshinori crossed his arms, opening his mouth and snapping it shut again several times. Eventually he sagged, looking like a deflated balloon animal.
"You're right." Toshinori sighed. "I know you're right. I've just been worried. Overly concerned."
"You still haven't chosen a successor." Aizawa realised.
"No." Toshinori admitted wearily. "I haven't. Though I've seen some potential amongst the students in your class. Mirio Togata, the boy Nighteye recommended, also shows promise. I just feel as if the perfect candidate is under my nose and I just can't see it."
"May I make a suggestion?" Aizawa asked.
Toshinori nodded, though he seemed wary.
"Perhaps the successor you are looking for hasn't been your student very long."
"Midoriya?" Toshinori groused. "You can't be serious."
"I'm not talking about Midoriya." Aizawa explained. "That boy has enough power as it is. But I am serious."
"Very well then." Toshinori conceded. "I shall hear your proposal."
"How is he?" Izuku asked, watching the unconscious form of Neito Monoma from behind the door.
"Physically, he is fine, dear." Recovery Girl reassured him. "He suffered little more than scrapes and bruises from falling over. My hope is that copying a quirk as powerful as yours simply drained him of energy significantly, and that his body needs to rest."
"I hope so too." Izuku admitted. "I was glad to see Bondo was okay. His burns looked pretty bad."
"I knew I'd find you here." Tokoyami called.
"Oh sorry." Izuku rubbed his neck nervously. "I just came by… to check if he woke up."
"I understand." Tokoyami placed a hand on his friend's shoulder. "Were our positions reversed, I would have done the same thing. But as your friend I cannot allow you to be late to arrive at your hero internship. I also do not wish to leave without you, but I will if I have to."
"Okay, okay." Izuku sighed. "Will you let me know if there is any change?"
"Of course, dear." Recovery Girl smiled kindly.
"It has been three days, Midoriya." Tokoyami chastised. "You cannot waste away in the hospital wing every chance you get. I will not resort to bringing your lunch here. What happened to Monoma was not your fault. He brought this on himself."
"You're right." Izuku admitted. "I know you are. I just feel so guilty."
"I would have been concerned if you hadn't been."
It was alarming how quickly things changed. They were stopped nearly every few minutes to answer a question or sign an autograph. As the winner of the Sports Festival, it seemed all of Japan suddenly knew who Izuku Midoriya was.
It also seemed that quite a few people were afraid of him. They'd recognize him and briskly walk the other direction or flatten themselves to avoid him. As a result, he and Tokoyami essentially had half a train car to themselves. They still didn't talk much during the trip, with Tokoyami reading a book and Izuku listening to music. All in all, it was uneventful, boring even, in comparison to being hounded in the streets.
The train station was nearly as bad as the walk from UA had been though eventually, aided by the station's security, Izuku and Tokoyami managed to slip away and find a private moment to collect themselves.
"We should get lunch together, if the situation permits it." Tokoyami said.
"I agree." Izuku smiled slyly. "Though somehow I doubt I'll have much free time."
"I suspect you're right." Tokoyami said. "I do not envy you. Good luck, Midoriya."
"See you around, Tokoyami." Izuku waved, heading down the street at a brisk pace. He was still early, but he didn't want to waste any more time with his seemingly growing fanbase. Luckily, Izuku's theory that the people in this city would be less fascinated by him seemed to be largely correct, as significantly fewer people accosted him in the street. It still took him much longer than he would have liked to reach his destination, but soon enough it was in sight, towering over the surrounding buildings balefully.
The door to Enji Todoroki's office nearly shattered by the force it was flung open with.
"I wish to ask you something." Shoto Todoroki demanded. His normally cold and distant demeanour was somewhat heated at that moment.
"Shoto, how good to see you drop by." Endeavour kept his tone level and polite. "Normally I would reprimand you for your disrespect, but in this case, I will let it pass. I can imagine this came as quite a shock."
"That's an understatement." Shoto snapped. "You haven't allowed internships at your agency for the past decade, not since Burnin'. I was surprised to receive an invitation myself."
"It is only… logical… to reward powerful students with a chance to learn from a powerful hero." Endeavour explained. "And especially powerful students deserve to intern with an especially powerful hero."
"You think me blind!" Tiny jagged crystals of ice crept out from under Shoto's collar. "You think I don't see the true reason you invited him? I am not a child!"
"Then cease acting like one." Endeavour snapped. "I can only forgive your petulance to a certain extent."
"Petulance!" Shoto nearly laughed. "You lecture me on petulance? Considering what you've done?"
"Be very careful of what you say next, Shoto." Bright orange fire licked Endeavour's face.
"Not only are you trying to twist me into something I am not," Shoto shouted. "But you are manipulating a child into doing what you are personally incapable of!"
"That wasn't very careful." Endeavour ground out.
"I'm not trying to be!" Shoto yelled.
"Very well, Shoto." Endeavour folded his arms, muscles bulking. "What do you wish me to do? Turn him away at the door?"
"Yes!" Shoto cried. "No! I- I wish you hadn't given him an invitation in the first place!"
"It's hardly constructive to live in retrospect, Shoto."
For a moment, Endeavour's voice was so melancholy that Shoto almost believed his father capable of an emotion beyond anger and disappointment.
"Fine!" Shoto leapt from his chair. "I'll be in the gym."
"Shall I send Midoriya to join you?" Endeavour asked nonchalantly.
"Father-"
"It could be good for him to learn from someone more experienced." Endeavour continued diplomatically. Shoto was almost fooled into believing his father had been sincere as well.
Shoto cried out in frustration rushing from his father's office. He slammed the door as he passed, fractals of jagged ice creeping from the handle.
The intercom on Endeavour's desk flashed red twice. He pushed the button down.
"Yes?" He barked impatiently, his frustration finally bleeding into his tone.
"Apologies sir. An Izuku Midoriya at front desk." The receptionist called. "He claims you sent him an invitation to intern here. The forgery is so well made that it fooled even me for a moment. Do you wish to interrogate him for the whereabouts of its creator?"
"Send him up to my office." Endeavour bit out. "Send also for Burnin'. She will oversee his training."
He could practically hear the receptionist open and close her mouth in disbelief. It grated on his already frayed nerves.
"Now, Sada."
"Right away, sir."
Endeavour stood up, walking to the window that made up the majority of his office's western wall. He glared at the city below and the thousands of tiny figures stalking its streets.
Down there, innocent souls and hardened criminals passed each other by without so much as noticing the other. So many with their own pointless lives either causing damage or needing to be saved from it.
It must be exhausting. Endeavour thought. To be so inconsequential. At least the villains of this world show some ambition.
With a chime, the elevator arrived.
AN:
As expected the idea of Monoma copying Omnitrix Aliens' powers went over as well as a brick in a volleyball match. xD
I'll address it here, because otherwise most of the review review section would be dedicated to explaining it.
What's worse, I know my explanation won't be satisfactory. :)
So completely on the level, NO. Monoma definitely cannot copy Omnitrix alien powers. That's dumb and ridiculous and I should feel dumb and ridiculous for writing it.
BUT
I do have a reason for it. A fundamental part of the universe I'm playing in is not explained: Quirks.
Where did they come from? Why did they develop? Where will they go? Cotton eye joe?
In my story I have a solid explanation as to where they come from.
I don't know if I should straight up say it here, because it could make a great plot for an Izuku 10K chapter. Let me know if you'd like to see that. Monoma's copying of Alien powers is actually intended as a tease to where Quirks in this universe originated.
Take that as you will. ;)
Also, just so you guys know I'm not pulling aliens out of a hat to fit the event on page, here's Izuku's unlocked playlist:
cannonbolt
Stinkfly
Heatblast
Fasttrack
Way Big
Four-Arms
Bloxx
Ripjaws
Lodestar
Upchuck
Upgrade
And now… the highly anticipated sequel…
REVIEW REVIEW - JUDGEMENT DAY:
Laitou
As usual, really good questions.
Kind of… Monoma's going to be a tad rattled from the experience, so I doubt he'll try and get his grubby mits on Izuku's black and wriggly for a while. He also doesn't retain any of the powers he got.
The way I have it in my head, he got Heatblast's powers because he had Heatblast winning the sports festival in his head when he was copying said powers.
You could say the Omnitrix has… a mind of its own…
The relationships in the story will develop as is logical for them to do. There will be (as little as possible) no finagling characters into place to develop feelings.
I chose Fasttrack because he's slower than XLR8, who would have made Iida utterly redundant. :)
XxGargantuaxX
It has the potential for Master Control, though with the Omnitrix being more organic, Master Control can't simply be unlocked, it has to be developed like a muscle or a skill.
The One Beyond You
I'll admit it. You truly are beyond me, mate.
And… yeah?
I'm telling a story. And as much as it is a power fantasy, having a protagonist COMPLETELY OP from the get go often makes for a boring story. I'd rather tell a story about a character with room to develop into an unstoppable force. Like in Invincible.
UnspokenVows
Thank you, mate. :D
Kind of exactly like that.
Also, I explained which alien he copied in my reply to Laitou. :)
Creed
I agree with you completely. Take Ben from Ben 10 and Monoma from MHA and he could 100% not copy powers. This ain't that though. This is an alternate universe with a different history.
7xtralimbs
Top name, mate. xD
KazoomTheGreat
Finally someone who procrastinates as much as I do! xD
Thank you so much for trusting that I wasn't just having a go at you guys, and actually had a plan. You gave me hope that there's a part of the audience who can look at a thing and reason that there's an explanation instead of just dismissing the story because an explanation isn't immediately apparent.
You made my week with this review.
bignathan02
I'll say this: the main villain is nicknamed 'The Conqueror'.
Don't tell anyone though. It'll spoil the surprise. ;)
fredbearfalselymistaken
I mistook you for a Fredbear. Does that happen often?
Thanks so much for the kind words. And yeah, I wanted a different powerset from the get go.
