Chapter 55: A Twist that's Very Twisty

Kyle kept his head down as he walked through the school halls. This was one of his first public outings. He was wearing a surgical mask as well, at the urging of Dr. K. She wanted him protected due to the chemo knocking his immune system down. Of course Kendall and James had poor timing. They had to get here just as the bell rang. They were meeting with Mr. Masters to discuss Kyle finishing school.

He could just feel the stares on him. He knew that most of them knew about his hospital stay, and now here he was wearing a mask. He wasn't sure what rumors were going around. He knew none of them were probably good. He had specifically asked Miles, Lucas, and Leora not to tell him anything. The less he knew the better. Still it didn't make his return any easier. That on top of Kendall and James both being here. Famous dads could be a drag at times.

Kyle felt someone fall into step on either side of him. He looked up and saw Miles and Lucas had joined him. They each hooked an arm with Kyle, walking with him.

"Hey guys," he said.

"Hey Kyle, sorry everyone is staring at you because they have nothing better to do with their lives," Miles said.

Lucas snorted a laugh at that before adding, "Must have boring lives to have to gossip about others to feel good about yourself."

Kyle glanced around as people turned away quickly. Some even flushed in embarrassment. Kyle felt more at ease. He knew he could count on these two for anything.

"Thanks," he said.

"No problem, we got you," Miles said.

"Always," Lucas said.

Kyle smiled at that. Things had been a little tense with Lucas at first, but after a few days and a long talk they worked it out. They were still friends, and he was thankful for that.

"People are gross," Layla said, worming her way in between Miles and him. "Don't worry though I'll fight anyone who wants to bug you."

"Thanks squirt," Kyle said, giving her a one armed hug.

"I'll make sure she doesn't throw the first punch too, so she can claim self defense," Millie said as she fell in step in front of him.

"I'll record it too, just to be extra sure she can claim she didn't throw the first one," Erika piped up from behind him.

"Thanks," Kyle laughed.

"So why are you here? I thought you were out til graduation," Miles said looking around Layla at Kyle as they walked down the hall.

"Gotta figure out my finals," Kyle said, "I've got two classes that have them."

"Ah, I see," Miles said.

"I think they should waive them, extenuating circumstances and all," Layla said.

"I wish," Kyle replied.

"I'm surprised your sister isn't here," Lucas said.

Kyle pointed to Kendall and James where Leora was already talking their ear off glaring at anyone who stared too long, almost dating them to try and take a picture.

"Oh, I didn't notice," Lucas said.

"Twin telepathy," Kyle replied, "eighteen years to your what three?"

"Yeah, you guys have it honed in," Miles said.

"Sorry you're not as cool as us," Kyle said, reaching around Layla and giving him a shove.

"You're more delusional than I thought, maybe you're not ready for school yet if you think you're cool," Miles teased.

"Your-your delusioned," Kyle shot back.

"Don't go getting him all worked up," Leora said as she fell into pace with them.

"Nah we want them to see his speech impediment now so he can get sympathy and hopefully get out of finals," Miles said.

"What he said," Kyle laughed.

"You guys are awful," Leora said, rolling her eyes.

They reached the office chatting and laughing. Kyle felt more at ease about being here again. Kendall and James turned to the group.

"Anyone who isn't Kyle needs to get to class before the bell," Kendall said.

"I'm always late," Miles replied, waving a hand.

"Get a move on loser," Lucas said, giving Miles a shove.

"Fine, fine, but if people start expecting this I'm blaming you," Miles said as he allowed Lucas to lead him away.

"You ok?" James asked as they entered the office. Kendall walked up to the secretary telling her they were here to meet with the principal and Kyle's teachers.

"No," Kyle replied, "but we-we haveta do this I guess."

"Just breathe," Kendall said. "It's just two finals. You got this. We can work something out I'm sure."

"Yeah, only two," Kyle grumbled.

Mr. Masters opened his office door and called them in. He was already there with the accommodation specialist as well. She was a short woman with bright red hair and freckles and bright green eyes. She looked to be around Jake's age. She greeted them with a smile introducing herself as Kacey Rodgers.

Kyle sat down with Kendall and James. He let them do most of the talking. As much as he joked with Miles and the others, he didn't really like talking to people much anymore. Especially those who knew him before, like Mr. Masters.

Kendall and James requested Kyle have a one on one testing with oral answers, given Kyle couldn't really read or write yet. They explained the situation as best they could, dancing around Kyle's cancer diagnosis as well.

Kyle sat back trying to stay involved, but he let Kendall and James do most of the talking. He didn't pipe up until Mr. Master asked about if Kyle was coming back to school at all or continuing with this new arrangement for the last few weeks at school.

"I-I can't," Kyle said quickly. Mr. Master looked over at him, almost as if he had forgotten he was here.

"I was just asking to make sure we are all on the same page. I understand the situation and we are fully willing to work with you," Mr. Masters said.

"I know it's just…" Kyle trailed off. He looked at Kendall and James.

"That's up to you," James said.

"Cancer," Kyle said slowly, "Chemo, three times a week."

"We haven't gone public just yet," Kendall said.

"I understand and this stays between us. We will work around this. I think we can set up an afterschool test," Mr. Masters said.

"Absolutely, I can work with your teachers and we can meet at a time that works for you any time," Kacey said.

"Thank you so much," Kendall said.

"We appreciate everything you have done for Kyle these last few weeks," James said.

"Of course it's my goal to help every student succeed," Kacey said.

They started talking about a tentative plan. Kyle sat back letting Kendall and James talk once more.

Jared fell down into Matt and Penelope's new couch. Kendall had given them the day off as he was taking care of Kyle's school issues today. The guys had been excited until Matt had roped them into helping him move. /Penelope was unpacking boxes in the kitchen and doing light duty. She was no longer on strict bed rest, but had to take it easy.

Roldy fell down next to Jared. Jared lifted his head to look at his best friend.

"He's trying to kill us," Roldy said.

"He's trying to lose all his friends," Jared shot back.

"I know, like movers are a thing and they get paid to do things like this," Roldy groaned.

Jared sunk into the couch as they continued to complain. He knew they had a few minutes before Noah and Matt noticed they abandoned them.

"I am so out of shape. Ever since we stopped rehearsing," Jared groaned.

"You two are babies," Matt said as he walked into the room.

"Come on guys we can't stop now," Noah said walking with another box. He set it down walking to stand over Roldy.

"Yeah come on we are almost done," Matt said.

"I'm exhausted," Jared moaned tiredly.

"Come on Ro, I'll reward you later," Noah said, wiggling his eyebrows at his husband.

"I don't have any energy left for even that," Roldy said.

"Do you ever? I'll do all the work like usual," Noah replied cheekily.

"Gross, I don't wanna hear the details of your sex life," Jared said, covering his ears.

"Says the one who brags about all the places he can fuck his boyfriend now that he's got a house to himself," Roldy replied.

"If he can ever leave the house again," Jared said.

"So what's going on with you guys," Matt asked, sitting down finally.

"Not sure," Jared sighed. "It's complicated."

"Are you really both gonna date him?" Noah asked, taking a seat on the ottoman across from him.

"I'm not sure, we haven't really had a chance to talk about it," Jared said slowly.

"Haven't had a chance to talk about it, or are you all avoiding it because you don't want to talk about it," Matt asked.

"Yes," Jared said.

"Well, you guys are gonna have to work something out eventually," Matt said.

"That's a future Jared problem, right now Present Jared is just focused on getting Kyle healthy," Jared replied cheekily.

"You scared to find out who he wants to keep around and who he's gonna kick to the curb," Matt asked.

"Matthew," Penelope said as she walked into the room. She smacked him upside the head.

"What?" Matt asked.

"You're such an ass sometimes," Penelope said.

"Thanks I try," Matt said.

Jared looked away from the two as they bickered. He knew Matt was right. As much as Kyle avoided it, he was avoiding it too. Hell even Miles seemed to not want to talk about it. It had been weeks and Kyle was doing much better. His words were good, until he got flustered or worked up. His tremor was better and barely there. The cancer was going into remission too. Yet, none of them had talked about their relationship. None of them wanted to make that choice.

Jared was scared if it came down to it, he would lose Kyle. He wasn't ready for that. The more he saw Kyle and Miles act like a couple, he realized how loose his hold on the blonde actually was.

"Sorry for him, he's a blunt idiot," Penelope said, interrupting his self wallowing.

"Yeah, but he's not wrong," Jared sighed, "I think we've all been so focused on getting Kyle better and stronger that we just pushed everything else aside."

"Look Monroe, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be a jerk about it, but I just…I make jokes when I'm uncomfortable and, I just worry about you, you know that," Matt sighed.

"I know and I don't take it personally Matty," Jared said. "Thanks for caring too."

"We don't want you getting hurt anymore than you already have been," Noah said.

"I know, but I'm a big boy, this is a me problem not you guys problem," Jared said, "however if you'd like to keep ice cream and start a horror movie playlist I won't say no to that and mint chip is my favorite."

"Duly noted," Matt laughed.

"So what do you boys want for lunch, it's what I came in here for," Penelope said.

"Pizza!" The four chimed together.

"Wings too?" Penelope asked, knowing her boys so well.

"Of course," Noah said.

"Got it, I'll put the order in, now get back to work and I'll let you know when it's here," Penelope giggled.

"You know with food on the way I now have motivation again," Jared said jumping up. The other three laughed as they stood up as well.

Jared busied himself with moving boxes. He didn't want to think about his doomed relationship with Kyle right now. Instead he focused on helping Matt and Penelope.

—Happy Mistakes—

Kendall made his way to Logan's office. He had already run into Marcus who said he was on lunch. Kendall knocked on the door frame as he entered. Logan looked up as he entered.

"What do you want Kendall," Logan asked.

"To visit my best friend," Kendall said as he shut the door behind him.

Logan snorted a laugh, "you never come here unless you want something or something bad happened, and to my knowledge nothing bad has happened so you want something."

"Oh how well you know me," Kendall chuckled.

"For how long we've known eachother it would be an insult if I didn't," Logan replied.

"Anyways," Kendall said, taking a seat across from him. "How's the vow renewal coming?"

"Ok, Carlos has taken over, he's told me not to worry and just help Presely," Logan said, "we might push it back from May though. Too much going on."

"What about July," Kendall asked.

"July?" Logan asked.

"Yeah half way between yours and mine and we could do a double ceremony," Kendall replied with a grin.

"Double?" Logan asked slowly, "you and James wanna do a vow renewal?"

"Yeah, I kinda Kendalled it though," Kendall said.

"Couldn't have been worse than last time," Logan laughed.

"Oh it was," Kendall laughed, "it was more of the same like we should do it and it was in the middle of the grocery store."

"The grocery store?" Logan asked.

"Oh yeah," Kendall said.

"Only you," Logan laughed.

"Hey, James said it was perfectly me and he wouldn't change it for the world," Kendall said defensively.

"He would say that he's your husband and he's a sap like that," Logan laughed.

"You are not wrong," Kendall replied laughing as well.

"Honestly, that sounds kind of cool," Logan said

"Right, like we could make a big party out of it and have all the kids and grand babies there," Kendall said.

"Let me talk to Carlos," Logan replied.

"James already did, he said I have to get you on board with the idea," Kendall said grinning. "Besides with the guys canceling their tour my summer opened up."

"They canceled their tour?" Logan asked.

"Yeah, with Kyle and Avery out of the picture and Matt and Pen having a baby they thought it was better to postpone the tour of a bit," Kendall replied.

"Makes sense," Logan nodded.

"So you're in then?" Kendall asked.

"How's the other tour going," Logan asked, sitting back in his chair.

"I still have two holdouts, they won't sign the damn contract," Kendall said rolling his eyes.

"Maybe you should tell them I signed on already," Logan said.

"I should, they used to fight to not be last to sign contracts," Kendall replied. He paused as his own words sunk in. "We should tell them."

"What difference would it make seriously. Do you think they'd fight like they used to?" Logan asked, "as I say I realize how much like Kelly I sound."

"Yes they would, neither of them want to be the rotten egg," Kendall said.

"Gross, don't go bringing that back," Logan said, shuddering at the memory those words invoked within him. Kendall just laughed maniacally.

"Anyways," Kendall said, sobering up a bit. "I've got the cakes all taken care of for graduation. Kyle and Leora both wanted chocolate and Miles and Lucas wanted vanilla so they each agreed to share a cake respectively."

"That was easy," Logan said.

"Do you think Gerald is gonna show up?" Kendall asked.

"I hope for Lucas' sake he does," Logan replied.

—Happy Mistakes—

Adam glared down at the little blue plus sign in horror. Damien was sitting on the edge of the tub beside him, his eyes wide as well.

"I mean like a plus means it's negative right?" Damien asked.

"Ha, I wish," Adam said.

Damein had shown up with the pregnancy tests for him. He had decided to take them before Cooper got home with the kids. He was visiting with Blaine and Rina. Adam had told him he wasn't feeling well to get out of it. Damien had talked him into taking a test to prove he was negative and to stop making him worry.

"So two babies this year," Damein said, bringing Adam back to the present.

"Apparently," Adam replied.

"So, now what," Damien asked.

"This is so not what I needed right now," Adam groaned. He tossed the test in the trash, next to the other five positive tests he had taken already.

"I mean just cause six tests are positive that doesn't mean you're pregnant right?" Damien asked.

"I wanna live in denial, but like…why does this always happen to me," Adam sighed, hanging his head.

"Sorry Addie," Damien said, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Well, we have to tell Cooper," Adam said.

"How are you gonna tell your dads?" Damein asked, earning another groan from Adam.

Adam wasn't that scared to tell Cooper. He knew they could work through anything, as long as they communicated. They had been through worse.

"Let's just hope that you aren't the one who's been cursed with twins," Damien teased.

"Oh god, don't even joke," Adam said, his eyes going wide.

"Relax Addie, you can handle this and you won't be alone. You've got me and Jake and your dad and Kyle and Leora too," Damien said.

"Right, right I've got family and it's gonna be ok," Adam said nodding his head. Maybe if he said it enough it would be true.

The two exited the bathroom. Damien led Adam to the kitchen. He grabbed a tub of mint chip and two spoons.

"Thanks," Adam said, taking a spoon.

"It's gonna be ok Addie, there's nothing we can do to change it," Damien assured him.

"Right, all we can do is move forward," Adam said, taking a bite of ice cream.

"I mean this is basically almost like twins right," Damien asked, taking a bite of his own.

"Irish twins, two kids born less than a year apart," Adam replied.

"Well, we were getting too cozy with how things were going. We needed a bigger adventure," Demian laughed.

They settled into banter and baby talk. Damien was laughing and teasing Adam when Cooper walked in with Miri and Kenny. He paused as he looked at the two.

"Do I wanna know? Did you and Jake get into an argument again?" Cooper asked as he set Miri down. She ran up to Damien demanding hugs.

"Why would you assume that?" Damien asked.

"You're both eating ice cream out of the container. You only do that when things go bad or someone's pregnant," Cooper said.

"Funny you should say that," Adam said, as Damien fought off a laugh at how accurate Cooper was.

"Say what?" Cooper asked, confused.

"Someone's pregnant," Damien said.

"Jake?" Cooper asked.

"No," Damien said, shaking his head. "We are being extra careful."

"Who? One of your other siblings?" Cooper asked, confused.

"No, uh, me," Adam said slowly.

Cooper looked at Adam confused. Like he was waiting for the punchline. Adam kept his gaze, showing there was none.

"Adam," Cooper said.

"Surprise shawty, baby number four is cooking," Adam said.

"You can go look at the tests. They are in the garbage in the bathroom," Damien said as he walked over to the couch with Miri. Kenny followed him.

"You're not serious…you can't…I'm already…this isn't…oh my god," Cooper said, his face flashing through each emotion of surprise to confusion to uncertainty.

"I am like six hundred percent sure. That's how many tests I took and they all came back positive," Adam said.

"I am in shock right now," Cooper said, "let me process this."

"I am still processing this too, would you like some ice cream," Adam asked, offering Cooper a bite of the ice cream.

Cooper walked over and took the bite. He sat down next to Adam at the counter. They sat there for a moment ignoring the three in the living room as Damien put on a show for the kids.

"How are we gonna do this?" Cooper asked.

"Well in about five to six months you'll give birth and then by my calculations I'll give birth three-ish months later," Adam said.

"Smart ass," Cooper said, shooting Adam a playful glare.

"We can do this Coop," Adam said waving a hand. "If dad and pops can handle Leora and Kyle we can handle this."

"What if one of us is having twins?" Cooper asked, his eyes going wide. Damien started cackling from the living room.

"Damien already cursed me," Adam replied, shooting his best friend a glare.

"Well, you always said you wanted a big family," Cooper said.

"We got this," Adam said, nodding his head.

"How are we gonna tell your dads," Cooper asked.

"I don't even wanna think about that right now," Adam sighed.

"So, I'm thinking another photo reveal would be fun," Damien said.

"Oh my god, player four loading, yes," Adam said looking up at him.

"This is gonna take a minute to get used to," Cooper said.

"Oh definitely, but just imagine we could dress them the same and like two babies," Adam said smiling. He had time to think about it. It was setting more.

"Double the diapers, the crying, and messes," Cooper said.

"Well yeah, but two more mini versions of you and me that we get to help shape and form into growing little people like Miri and Kenny," Adam said.

"Ok, like yeah, I want that but can we skip the demon phase?" Cooper asked with a pout.

"I wish," Adam replied. He leaned over and kissed Cooper. "Let's keep this between us until we know more and I get a doctors confirmation."

"I'll keep my mouth shut too, I won't even tell Jake," Damien said.

"Yeah, yeah you're just glad you were first this time," Adam said, rolling his eyes.

"Best friends for life Dude, aside from your partner I should always be first," Damien said.

—Happy Mistakes—

James sighed as he waited for his doctor. He had finally caved and gone to see a doctor. Kendall had been nagging him to get checked out. He had been a little under the weather lately. It was probably just stress induced exhaustion. However, Kendall was freaked out now that Kyle had cancer. He didn't want to risk anything. James didn't blame him either. If the roles were reversed he would be panicking too.

James checked his phone for the time. He had been in here for over fifteen minutes and it had been almost an half an hour since he had his labs taken. He was too worried. He knew people got busy and there were people here who were sicker than him.

A knock at the door caught his attention. He pocketed his phone as he looked up. His doctor, Dr. Shaffer entered the room. He greeted him with a smile.

"How are the kids?" He asked as he sat down at the computer.

"Good, Jake and Adam are busy with their own kids, twins graduate two weeks hopefully, and Jenny is terror. The grandkids keep me busy," James replied.

"Sounds like you've got your hands full," Dr. Shaffer said.

"Always," James said, "so what's the word?"

"Well your blood work looks fine, no sign of infection or anything like that," Dr. Shaffer said as he logged into his computer.

"I think it's just stress and a stomach bug I had a few weeks ago. Kendall's freaking out now because of Kyle's cancer," James said.

"Cancer?" Dr. Shaffer asked.

"Oh yeah, Kyle had two cancerous lymph nodes. Very early on and he's doing fine. He's almost done with Chemo. I've been a little under the weather so Kendall kind of forced me to come get checked out," James said waving a hand.

"That's a big life change, it can cause stress," Dr. Shaffer said, nodding his head.

"I know, that's what I told Kendall but he insisted that I come get checked out," James replied.

Dr Shaffer opened his mouth to reply but the phone started ringing. He looked down. "That's lab, I asked them to call of anything interesting came up."

James nodded his head. He sat back as Dr. Shaffer answered the phone. He could hear the other side of the conversation, but whatever was said shocked Dr. Shaffer. James didn't like that one bit. He hoped it was nothing serious.

Dr. Shaffer hung up. He turned to James. He seemed to be thinking his next words over.

"What's wrong?" James asked. He didn't like that look.

"So I threw a bunch of tests at you just to cover my bases," Dr. Shaffer said.

"And?" James asked.

"Your HCG was elevated," Dr. Shaffer said.

"HCG?" James asked slowly. It sounded familiar, but he couldn't place what it meant. "What's…" he trailed off as it dawned on him. "That-that can't be, that's wrong."

Lucas sighed as he waited. He was currently sitting at a table for four with Artie. They were waiting for Mary and Gerald to arrive. To say Lucas was nervous, was an understatement. His foot started to tap under the table, while his fingers drummed on the top.

He had talked Mary into getting Gerald here to talk, but he hadn't mentioned Artie would be here. He knew it wasn't going to go over very well.

He knew Mary would be ok, she's met Artie. They got along instantly. Before she had left she had even told Lucas he found a good one. She was so happy for him and could see that Artie really cared about him

"Relaxing darling," Artie said, grabbing Lucas's hand.

"Sorry, just anxious," Lucas replied.

"That's ok, I get that, but I am here for you. We can leave if things get bad," Artie said, bringing his hand up to his lips, kissing the back of his hand.

"I know, and I hope we don't have to," Lucas said. His shoulders slumped. "He's my dad, I just want him to give you a chance. I don't understand why he won't. You are the nicest, sweetest guy I've ever dated. You make me so happy and I can possibly see a future with you."

"Really?" Lucas asked.

"Yeah, I don't know how this story ends, but I hope it ends with you by my side, maybe a kid or a dog but you are definitely there with me definitely," Lucas replied.

"Lu," Artie said softly. He leaned over and kissed him. "Me too. I want all that."

"That was so sweet."

Lucas jumped and turned in his chair. He saw Mary and Gerald standing a few feet away. Gerald had an unreadable look on his face.

"Lucas, baby-" Mary started.

"Dad-" Lucas started.

"Is that how you really feel?" Gerald asked.

"Yeah," Lucas said.

"I'm sorry I've been so stubborn," Gerald said, walking up to him. "I've just wanted what was best for you. I wanted to protect you and keep you safe. I realize now that you are grown up and know how to take care of yourself and it seems you found someone special too. I am so sorry."

"Dad, that's all I wanted to show you," Lucas said standing up. Gerald enveloped him in a hug. "Dad this is Artie and I really do love him."

"Hello, I'm Gerald King and I'd like to start fresh here and get to know you and maybe see why my son likes you so much," Gerald said, holding out a hand to Artie.

"I'm Artie Griffin, and I'd like that too," Artie said.

"It's nice to see you again Artie," Mary said, smiling at him.

"Let's sit," Lucas said, pulling out a chair for Mary. Artie pulled one out for Gerald.

They settled into light chatter and catching up. Lucas was glad that Gerald seemed to be trying. He was really taking an interest in Artie too. It was so nice and calm. Lucas could hardly remember why he had been so nervous.

"Graduation is coming up," Mary said.

"I was wondering if it was possible to have a party with Miles, Kyle, and Leora," Lucas said.

"Lucas-" Gerald started.

"Carlos, Logan, Kendall, and James all rented a nice hall for the party since there are so many of us," Lucas said quickly. "They all said you guys and our family were welcome."

"Our family," Gerald said.

"Yeah, you guys are my parents," Lucas said.

"I was gonna say that sounds like a good idea, less traveling going from party to party," Gerald said.

"I just want you to know no matter what you are, my dad. Logan and Carlos are cool and all and may biologically be my dads, but they are more like uncles to me," Lucas said.

"Thank you," Gerald said.

Lucas could tell, even if he hadn't said it, that Gerald was scared to lose him to Carlos and Logan. Sure they fought at times, but he raised him. He was his dad. That would never change. Carlos and Logan were more like his cool uncles. He wanted to know them and learn about his heritage, but they would never replace his parents.

As dinner came to a close Lucas felt jittery again. Gerald and Mary had danced around the question of him coming home. He was dreading it a little bit. Artie had already asked him to move in with him at the Palm Woods after graduation. Lucas was looking forward to that. He wasn't sure how to break the news to Gerald and Mary.

Lucas mashed his cheesecake to the plate, lost in thought. Not realizing Mary was watching his inner struggle. She was always so astute.

"Sweetie is everything alright," Mary asked.

"Huh?" Lucas asked, looking up from his mashed dessert. He glanced back at the mangled food. "Yeah, just getting full."

"You only play with your food when you're nervous," Mary pointed out.

"What-? No I don't," Lucas gasped as being read so easily by her.

"Yes you do," Artie replied, "the night you met Grandpa Art you spilled your water twice twirling your ice and you're poor steak it was like you were trying to kill it again," he laughed.

"Shut up," Lucas said, his eating turning red with embarrassment.

"You should have seen him when he tried to tell us he was bi," Mary said, turning to Artie.

"Mom," Lucas groaned.

"He destroyed two pieces of cake, mine and his. They were mush," Mary said.

"Please stop," Lucas said, the heat creeping down his neck.

"She's your mom, she's never gonna stop," Gerald chuckled.

Lucas smiled despite the embarrassment. Things felt so easy suddenly. They truly were family. This was never gonna change.

"So again I ask Lucas, what's wrong," Mary asked, bringing him back to his previous thoughts.

"Um, it's nothing," Lucas said as he started mashing his cheesecake again.

"I asked him about moving in after graduation for the summer until he gets settled into his dorm at UCLA, we weren't sure about what was gonna happen with your guys and the Mitchell house is a little full at the moment," Artie said.

"That's fair," Gerald said, nodding his head.

"I haven't made a decision and tonight definitely changes things," Lucas started.

"Honey," Mary said placing a hand on his shoulder. "Breathe."

"It's ok son," Gerald said, turning to Lucas. "So why don't you come home until graduation and you can make your choice when the time comes. You are an adult and as much as it pains me to admit that, I know I can't stop you and Artie seems like a good kid."

"Dad," Lucas said, shocked. He had not expected that reaction.

"Your mom and I have been talking and we figured this would be coming. We just hoped it would be a little later into college," Gerald sighed, "but I can see you two really care about each other. I'm sorry I've been so bull headed about this. I just wanted to protect you. To me you're still ten and asking for help with your homework."

"I'll always need you dad, but I'm an adult now and it's gonna be different now, like how to do bulls and fix a broken down car or something like that," Lucas replied.

"I'll always be one phone call away," Gerald replied.

"More like two, you always lose your phone and I have to call mom first," Lucas quipped. Gerald nodded his head as he laughed.

The evening drew to a close. Gerald and Artie both attempted to pay the bill, with Gerald winning that argument. Lucas left the restaurant with his arm like with Artie's as he said goodbye to his parents.

"That was not how I expected things to go," Lucas admitted as they walked along to Artie's car.

"Oh come on, what were you expecting? World war three? It's not like we were going to dinner with my mom," Artie said.

"That is definitely not how I thought things would go tonight," Lucas said.

"Me either," Artie said.

"There's gotta be something in the air," Lucas laughed.

"I think we might be in the twilight zone," Lucas agreed, laughing with him.

—Happy Mistakes—

Leora fidgeted as she waited for Carter. He had asked her out to dinner tonight. She glanced in a window at her outfit. She wore a green sun dress that reached to mid thigh, with a black leather cropped jacket. Carter had told her it was nothing fancy, but she still wanted to impress him. They had been seeing each other for a couple weeks now and things were going good, she was almost ready to drop the famous family bomb on him. He didn't seem to have a clue, or he was good at pretending to not know.

Leora glanced down at her phone. It was only a few minutes past their agreed meeting time. If the last few weeks had taught her anything it's that Carter lived on his own time. On time was when he arrived. She wasn't worried.

They had been seeing each other for a couple weeks now. They were constantly texting and calling one another. As much as she hated to admit it, she was falling for him so fast. It was hard not to. He was so sweet to her. He always made sure she was into whatever they did, and waited for her to consent before kissing her. He had a lot of similar interests as her too. He was a writer too. He mostly wrote poetry and songs. He was hoping to have some of his songs sold soon. He was so down to earth too. He wasn't like the other jerks in this town. He didn't even seem to know she had a famous family.

"Hey there gorgeous, waiting for someone?"

Leora turned around her smile falling as she came face to face with someone she didn't know. There was a guy around her age, with dark hair and bright eyes. He was looking her up and down with a cocky grin on his face.

"Not interested," Leora said, glancing around.

"Aw come on, whoever stood you up I can show you a better time," he said.

"No thanks," Leora said, taking a step back.

"Are you really waiting around for some loser, who can't be bothered to be on time?" He asked.

"Yeah, she's waiting for her boyfriend."

Carter appeared almost out of nowhere, placing an arm around her. Leora relaxed into his touch with a smile.

"What's a hottie like you doing with a loser like him?" The guy asked.

"From where I'm standing the loser is you," Leora replied.

"Not get lost creep, she's not interested," Carter said.

"Whatever," the guy scoffed. He had pulled a marker from his pocket and grabbed Leora's hand. "Here's my socials. When you get bored of this loser I'd love to hit this." He said, looking her up and down.

"Gross," Leora said looking at her hand.

"Alcohol wipes get ink off," Carter said. He reached into his bag and pulled out a wipe.

"You just carry these around?" She asked.

"I use them a lot," Carter replied as he started to scrub gently at her hand.

"Oh?" Leora asked.

"Type one diabetic," Carter replied, "diagnosed when I was five."

"Oh, I didn't realize," Leora said.

"Yeah, I'm used to it and I know what I can and can't eat," Carter said, waving a hand at her. "Anyways that asshole was a total sleaze."

"Yeah, thanks for the save," Leora replied.

"Don't mention it, and the way you burned him you probably didn't need my help," Carter replied. "There you go, all done, barely a mark left from him."

"Thanks," Leora replied.

"Ready to go get some dinner? Maybe catch a movie or something?" Carter asked.

Leora nodded her head and linked her arm with his. They walked down the street to a small restaurant, the sign over the door reading Pastalicious.

"I found this place not that long ago, it's got the best pasta ever," Carter said.

"Well I hope a restaurant named Pastalicious had good pasta," Leora laughed as she followed him inside.

Carter led her to the counter. They quickly placed their order and found their seats. They laughed and chatted as they waited.

Once the food was ready Carter jumped up to grab it. He sat down and placed Leora's food in front of her.

"Don't look at me like that," Leora said, her cheeks heating up under his stare.

"Sorry, this is my favorite pasta place. This is make or break relationship stuff," Carter said.

"Oh man the pressure is on then," Leora laughed.

She grabbed her fork and picked up a bite. She looked up at Carter with a small playful glare. He looked away laughing. Leora took her first bite, gasping. Carter looked back at her, a brow arched at her.

"Where has this been all my life?" Leora asked.

"I told you it's good," Carter said as he started eating his own food.

"Oh yeah, this is where we are going everytime we go out now," Leora declared.

"So there's more dates?" Carter asked.

"As long as they are here, yes," Leora replied.

Carter laughed and nodded his head. "Of course, bothigg no but the finest for the most beautiful girl in LA."

"I would go that far," Leora said, her cheeks heating up once more.

"I would," Carter said. He tilted his head as he looked at her, a smile spreading across his face. "You are one of the most gorgeous girls I have ever met. I can't believe you'd actually choose to keep seeing me."

"Why wouldn't I? You're cute, funny, charming and you defend me from those losers who keep trying to hit on me," Leora said, smiling at him.

"Are we dating?" Carter asked.

They had been dancing around that topic. Leora hadn't wanted to label it so soon, but she couldn't deny it. Leora blushed once more as she nodded her head.

"I guess so," Leora replied, "on one condition."

"What's that?" Carter asked.

"I get to be the girlfriend," Leora said.

"Aw man, I was hoping I could be the girlfriend. I never get to be that part," Carter pouted. Leora laughed at that.

The rest of dinner was spent with more playful banter and chatter. As they left Carter placed an arm around her as they walked. She caught another guy looking away and smiled. Having a boyfriend did have its perks.

Carter walked her to her car once more. She turned to look at him with a smile.

"May I?" Carter asked, stepping up closer to her.

"Of course," Leora said. She closed the distance kissing him. They parted, smiling at one another. "Did you Uber here?" She asked, knowing him well enough at this point.

"Always," Carter laughed, "Jackie always has the car and he's out of town this weekend."

"Would you like a ride?" Leora chuckled.

"I don't wanna put you out of your way," Carter said, shaking his head.

"What kind of boyfriend would I be if I let my girlfriend Uber home," Leora laughed.

"Wait, I'm the girlfriend?" Carter asked shocked, he fist pumped the air. "Yes!"

"Get in the car dork," Leora said.

"Fine, but you better be a perfect gentleman," Carter warned.

"Cross my heart," Leora giggled.

They both climbed into the car. Leora started driving as Carter put his address into her phone.

"So," Carter said as Leora parked her car.

"Yes?" Leora asked, glancing over at him.

"So I know you mentioned wanting to see the Zombies Reckoning 2 since you missed it when it first came out," Carter said.

"It's streaming now isn't it?" Leora asked excitedly.

"Yeah, I haven't watched it again yet and I promise not to spoil anything," Carter said, holding his hand up in scout's honor.

"What are we still doing here? I don't have to be home until eleven," Leora said getting out of the car. She paused when Carter didn't move. "Are you coming?"

"If I'm the girlfriend-" he stated.

"Right! My manners," Leora gasped. She ran around the car and opened the door for him. She bowed, holding a hand out to him. "Forgive me, I'm not used to being a boyfriend yet. I'll be better I promise,"

Carter laughed as he allowed her to help him from the car. He kissed her on the cheek.

"You're doing great," Carter laughed.

They raced up to his apartment. Carter steered her to the kitchen for snacks telling her to grab the drinks while he grabbed some popcorn.

In no time they were seated on the couch with Carter searching for the movie. Leora was practically bouncing with excitement. She had honestly been about to go home and talk Kendall and James into watching it with her.

The movie started and Leora placed an arm around Carter, smiling devilishly at him. "Don't worry babe, I'll protect you from the zombies," she said in her best bro voice. Carter, who had been taking a drink of his soda, choked as it came out his nose.

"How are you so perfect," Carter choked out.

"I've got three older brothers," Leora laughed, pulling him closer.

"Ah, I see," Carter said.

—Happy Mistakes—

Kendall paced the living room. He had his phone to his ear. It rang as he waited for James to pick up. He hadn't heard from him since this morning. Marcie had even said that he had called her and said he was gonna be late and that Kendall would probably be home first. She had felt something off with him.

He had called James a few times throughout the night. James had gone radio silent and Kendall didn't like it. Kyle had taken Jenny to bed and gone to bed himself. Leora was supposed to be out with Lucas, but he had shown up a half hour after she left looking for her. It was past Leora's curfew of 11. He was waiting for either of them to come home and wasn't sure which he was anticipating more.

"Hey this is James, you know what to do. I'll get back to you as soon as I can."

Kendall groaned frustrated. The beep came. "James, this isn't funny. Where are you? This isn't like you—"

"The mailbox is full. Goodbye." The animatronic voice said.

The line dropped on him. Kendall looked down at his phone in shock. He hadn't left that many messages. Had he?

The front door opening caught his attention. He rushed out to see James enter. He ran up to him relieved to see him, yet mad at him for taking off like that.

"Where have you been? I've been calling you all night," Kendall asked.

"Sorry," James said slowly.

"Are you ok? What happened? Marcie said you seemed off when you called her and you haven't been answering me," Kendall said quickly.

James flinched away at the rapid fire questions. He opened his mouth to reply as a frantic knocking came at the door. Kendall moved past him to open the door. Carlos ran in followed by Logan at a slower pace.

"James! Oh thank god! I just got off set like less than an hour ago and got your message," Carlos said, relieved to see James. "Your message sounded…off."

"Yeah sorry, just…I needed to clear my head. I'm fine," James said.

"James what's wrong, you're kind of freaking me out here," Kendall said worriedly.

"Sorry, I just had a weird day," James said slowly.

"Ok what happened, Jamie talk to me," Kendall said, stepping up to him. He tipped James' chin up so their eyes met.

James took a breath and closed his eyes. "Promise me you'll listen and not get all judgy and jump to conclusions."

"That's like ninety percent of his personality," Logan snorted. Kendal shot him a glare.

"He's not wrong," James and Carlos said together, both laughing.

That was the most genuine Kendall had seen James all night so far. His behavior was worrisome. Something was wrong.

"I promise I'll listen, now just tell me why you're acting so weird," Kendall said.

James bit his lip. He reached into his coat pocket. He put what looked like a photo. He stared down at it.

"I didn't believe it at first," James said slowly. He held it out to Kendall.

Kenda took the photo from him. He looked down and saw it was a sonogram photo. He blinked a few times before looking up at James.

"You can't be serious right now," Kendall said.

"What?" Carlos asked, confused.

"Logan, Carlos, I think James and I need a moment alone," Kendall said stiffly. He didn't want them here right now.

"What's wrong?" Carlos asked.

"Carlos," Kendall snapped, whirling around to face him. He glanced at Logan who read the situation. He grabbed Carlos' shoulder.

"Carlos let's go, this is between them right now," Logan said, tugging him away from the two.

Once the door slipped shut, Kendall turned back to James. James seemed like he was ready to cry. Kendall was at a loss for words. He wasn't sure where to start. He opened his mouth a few times before closing it, at a loss for words.

"James-" Kendall said. He floundered again. James seemed to be waiting for no. "I-I can't—this isn't…" he trailed off.

His mind was racing. He knew how babies were made. It was a process they both thoroughly enjoyed. However, after Jenny they had taken care of the baby making part. This wasn't supposed to happen. He could not get James pregnant and vice versa. His brain was telling him there was only one way this could happen, but his heart knew otherwise.

"James," he sighed.

He didn't get to finish that thought as the front door opened once more. Leora entered the house. She stopped in her tracks when she saw him and James.

"Dad, pops," she said surprised.

"Where have you been? It's almost midnight," j Kendall said, switching tracks. This he could deal with.

"I was out with Lucas, we lost track of time I'm sorry," Leora said.

"Try again, Lucas showed up here after you left. He wanted help getting ready for his date," Kendall said frowning at her.

Leora's jaw floundered. She had been caught in a lie and she knew it. She seemed to be thinking her next words over carefully.

"I don't wanna hear it, just go to bed," Kendall said, shaking his head. Leora looked at him confused. "Now!" He snapped.

Leora jumped and ran past him. She didn't spare him another glance. Kendall sighed and turned to James.

"Kendall," James said, stepping up to him.

"I need to be alone," Kendall said.

"It's almost midnight," James said.

"You had your turn to process this now it's mine," Kendall said shaking his head. "Kyle out Jenny to bed around nine, he should be sleeping already too. I'll deal with Leora later…just I need some space."

He grabbed his coat and car keys before James could say anything else. Instead of going to his car he went for a walk. The crisp night air would help him clear his head.

Logically he knew the answer to this. James would never cheat, but Kendall couldn't get him pregnant. He made sure his vasectomy worked. They both had. There was no way he had gotten James pregnant. Was there? Could they fail this far down the line?
