Lucifer Morningstar. The King of Hell and of lies. The first ever Fallen Angel. The undisputed sovereign of the Seven Deadly Sins. And Charlie's father. Sweet Charlie's father. Viol couldn't comprehend how such a cheerful, kind and compassionate person was the daughter of the most evil being in the entire creation.
She also found it amusing how none of the Hotel citizens made any preparations for him whatsoever. No big flashy banners, no music playing around, no fancy food being served, not even his arrival being discussed among them. As if he was but a mere being, with nothing peculiar or significant title.
Viol didn't know how she should feel about this. A part of her wanted to run away, though she did her best to suppress that thought, given that nowhere in Hell she would be safe. Another part of her wanted to stay and actually come in contact with the King of Hell, to see if he was anything like his sweetheart daughter.
Then, a bang from the door.
Another bang.
"Oh my God, he's here!" Charlie exclaimed as Vaggie adjusted her bowtie one last time before she headed to open the door.
A short man stood outside. He wore a top hat and high heels that, nevertheless, failed to give the illusion of a tall height. His whole outfit was reminiscent of a circus ring master. It reminded Viol of a circus act they have watched a few months prior. He had a huge smile on his face that grew further the moment he laid his eyes on Charlie.
"Char-char! I'm so happy to see you!" He exclaimed and hugged her tightly.
The princess let an exasperated exhale from the sudden contact but nevertheless, hugged him back.
"Me too, dad" she said. "How was the meeting?"
Lucifer pulled away, his glimmer in his eyes never leaving. Viol tilted her head. She never expected the literal devil to behave in such a jolly and apprehensive manner. For a moment, she thought it would a good idea to trust him. Thankfully, she snapped back to reality. What if all of this was but a mere act? That must be the case. She watched Lucifer as he conversed with his daughter about that boring-ass meeting and Viol quickly got bored and stopped listening. What's so interesting about the divorce of two demon birds individuals she had never met and one of them being described as a fucking obnoxious hen?!
When Lucifer was almost done, his eyes fell on the little angel at the corner of the room. Viol instinctively pulled away, though there was nowhere she could hide.
"Who is she?" He asked her daughter.
"That's Viol" Charlie said and approached the girl. "She's an angel Angel found at his work and he brought her with us"
"An angel you said" Lucifer mumbled to himself and brought his attention to her stature. "Isn't she a bit young to be fallen?"
"She didn't fall. She was separated from her mother on Extermination day and now we try to contact Heaven to send her back" Charlie explained. "So, dad, we thought you might help us"
"Of course, Char-char" he said and he turned his gaze to the angel. "Hey, little one"
Viol found herself frozen on the spot. She wished she could run as far away as possible, though that wasn't an option right now. She gathered all the strength she could master and voiced a tiny weak croaked "h-hey".
Charlie chuckled slightly and covered her mouth with her palm. "Isn't she adorable?"
"Quite indeed" Lucifer agreed.
Viol's face reddened. The thought of her mother dismissing her cowardly behavior crossed her mind and caused her cheeks to turn into a brighter shade of red. She turned the other way, so no one could see her.
"Will you leave again soon?" She asked.
Lucifer mistook her reserved behavior for shyness and chuckled slightly. He bent over to caress the angel's hair. "Don't worry, little one. I was away for a couple of days only. I am not gonna leave any time soon. This is where I live afterall"
Viol sighed disappointed. Great, now she had to face the evil incarnation throughout the whole stay on the Hotel.
"About your mom now" he went on, coloring his voice with an upbeat mode that Viol read as mocking. "Care to tell us who she is? I will call the Heaven Embassy, we shall have a talk and in less than a week you'll be back with her. How does that sound?"
Viol turned again to face him. She hoped that face had acquire her normal color.
"You should already know who she is" she declared with a stern voice.
"We're not starting good..." Husk mumbled to himself and took a shot.
"My mom is the Head Exorcist herself! Her name is Lute! She brings terror and fear on your kin and nothing and no one can ever stop her!" She said, her voice not trembling in the slightest. She eyed every single one of them sternly, hoping to catch their expressions. They should crowl and lower their gazes upon hearing that name. "See?! I'm not the daughter of a random Exorcist!" She went on.
No one reacted to a thing she said.
Her acute hearing caught Vaggie mumbling "I knew it. I fucking knew it" to herself, while covering her mouth with her hand and averting her gaze.
Cower before me and my motherfucking badass mom, you filths! Viol thought to herself and smiled proudly.
A moment passed before Charlie broke the silence.
"Don't tell me your father is-?" She asked, aiming the question to herself rather than Viol.
Viol didn't have to say anything.
It was Lucifer who gave the answer.
"Adam Firstman"
It was but a mere whisper, though it was enough to silence the entire lobby. Every single attendant stared with dead eyes. Only Alastor seemed strangely calm from the revelation. Then again, given his unchangeable nonchalant expression, it was extremely hard to guess how he truly felt most of the times.
"That's right!" Viol declared, as if it wasn't already obvious, a smug look on her face.
"Listen, kiddo" Vaggie said. "If Adam firstman was my father, I wouldn't be so proud of that. In fact, I'd cry myself to sleep"
Viol turned to look at her with a raging look. How dare she say that she'd be ashamed having Adam, former Leader of the Exorcists, bravest angel in all of creation, Fist man who started life on Earth, as her father! He used to be the coolest shit in the entire universe, defending Heaven against vile beings like them! Surely, everyone wanted to be related to him.
"Shut your mouth, you good-for-nothing traitor!" She hissed, taking Vaggie aback.
"Trust me, when I say I would never want to be associated with a big fatass psychotic bully who throws his weight around just because he can! Niffty - she gestured at the dwarf maiden, who was busy chasing and stabbing bugs - did us a great favor by killing him"
"Your welcome!" Niffty replied and returned to the aforementioned activity.
"My dad was nothing like that!" Viol protested, losing her composure. There was a limit to the mental strength a child at her age could possess.
"Kiddo, whether you like it or not, that's the truth..."
"Nooo! You're lying. I know exactly what happened. My mom had told me everything. You killed him with no second thought, because he led an army to rightfully punish you. You secretly plot to rebel against Heaven and Dad was the first victim to achieve that"
Someone cleared his throat. Someone withing a red sharp outfit, deer ears, sharp yellow teeth and a raspy, radiostatic voice.
"Rarely do I ever feel... remorse for individuals" he started, approaching the TV set in the middle of the lobby while playing with his cane. "But this young lady over there has pulled my heartstrings. And you know me. I can't let someone I care about remain in the dark-"
Remain in the dark?
Viol couldn't believe the words of this fucking walking tampon. He was baffling. Surely, he was baffling. He was a demon and he must have heard the story wrong, clearly wanting to appease his kind that they were rightful in all their evil, amoral actions.
"So, I shall enlighten them" he finished and with a clasp of his fingers, he summoned a CD out of thin air.
Vaggie narrowed her eyes.
"I thought you hated modern technology" she growled through her gritted teeth.
"Not when it's useful enough to inform someone. And this young lady" he gestured at Viol "needs to have her eyes open. For her own good"
The screen flickered before it was turned on, displaying the "666 Hell news" logo, while a female speaker with a boyish voice narrated the "recent events of the Exorcists attack against the Hazbin Hotel". And by "recent", they meant "eight years ago", but who cared. The screen flickered again and showcased the Exorcist army emerging from a Heaven's portal and attacking the Hotel. It barely looked like its current state, being much smaller and less impressive, so Viol assumed that her parents and the army probably had destroyed it at that time. The thought filled her with pride. These demons deserved it.
Suddenly, a figure appeared at the center. A strange yet familiar figure with a horned mask, glowing yellow eyes and a purple robe with an "A" anagram and a golden leaf, reminiscent of countless classical paintings regarding his fall from the Garden of Eden.
Viol watched with acute eyes her father fighting off the Hotel residents, screaming, cussing and throwing his weight around. Her mother wasn't any better either. She attacked one of Charlie's pet goats (which had transformed into a dragon) and headed to the injured Vaggie. And then, came the moment. Oh, what a disastrous moment. Her father had grabbed Charlie by the neck, laughing all the while voicing his desire to kill her.
Viol may not trust Charlie completely, but she has bonded with her the most during her stay. And hearing her dad stating those hateful thoughts... that was too much for her! She stood and tried to excuse herself, but Alastor grabbed her by the arm and force her to watch the rest of the event.
"This is where it gets better!" He said with his ever-lasting amusing smile.
And this was where it got worse.
Charlie's father, Lucifer, arrived just the right moment to give a well-deserving punch to Adam. Adam was thrown to the other side, his mask shattered, leaving half his face bare, but that didn't stop him. The rest of the fight had Lucifer taunting Adam about his skills, weight and failed marriages, dodging every light attack Adam threw at him. During a bad moment, Charlie pinned him on the ground, causing a deep hole to form around him. Lucifer punched him in the face several times. Though now he wasn't mocking him, he was giving out the best to punish him for hurting his daughter. It was Charlie who stopped him from giving him the final throw.
"Dad, he had enough!"
Viol didn't realise that there were tears running down her cheeks. She hated what she was watching. She wanted it to stop. The rest of the gang didn't seem to like it either. They had turned their backs while the news were playing, clearly empathizing with the angel's pain.
Same applied to Alastor, who had turned hus gaze from the screen to watch Viol's tear-struck face. His frown deepened. His smile grew larger.
Adam climbed out the hole and starting yapping about how he's the best thing ever and how everyone, even the Sinners he annually killed, should respect him and worship him for starting life on Earth.
Viol couldn't take him seriously. He behaved so... immaturely. There was nothing noble or heroic about him. Even when he killed demons, he acted as a school yard bully, instead of the proud tough warrior her mother often showcased.
He let a pained yelp as a dagger pierced his chest and fell down with a thud. Atop him stood Niffty, holding the handle of the weapon responsible for his death. A moment passed. Niffty lifted the dagger and hit him again. And again. And again. In and out. In and out. She didn't regret a thing, she enjoyed the very action of it, laughing and smiling.
Viol buried her face in Charlie's chest and wipped silently. She knew this wouldn't prevent what already had happened, but she nevertheless wanted to avoid the harsh reality.
"Noooooooo!"
She turned back on the TV because she had recognized her mother's voice. She had thrown herself at Adam's side and she had rolled him over. Her horned mask has fallen over and left hand was missing, golden blood running from the open wound. She looked like a mess.
"Sir! Sir! Stay with me, sir!" She begged, tears emerging from her eyes. Adam smiled ever so lightly. "Adam!"
"Daddy!" Viol yelled at the same time, overwhelmed by her mother's display of worry and desperation.
Adam died. Her father was dead.
Alastor closed the TV. Viol stared at her reflection, trying to comprehend the images she had just witnessed.
"Oh, see my sweet dear fellow? Things didn't exactly go like you thought. Your father wasn't a noble hero. No no no. Quite the opposite. Your father was an amoral bloodthirsty and chauvinistic genocidal monster. He was a selfish and egotistical prick and he died a selfish and egotistical prick. That's the truth!"
Tears flowed in Viol's eyes. She clenched and uncletched her fists countless times, digging her nails in her palms. She wanted nothing more than to yell to his face that he was wrong, to shut his stupid cunt mouth, shove it right up to his ass and show some fucking respect to the man that was responsible for his entire existence (as well as her own).
But she couldn't find the strength. And not because she was surrounded by Sinners, it was because her one fear, the fear she dared not even mention because she didn't want to prove it right was finally fulfilled• neither her mom nor her dad were the noble heroes she so eagerly admired.
"Fuck you!" She yelled at Alastor and stormed out of the lobby.
Silence fell. You could hear a pin dropping on the floor. Awkward stares floated on the air.
Then...
"Alastor!" Charlie hissed through her teeth.
Alastor shrugged. "What? She ought to face the harsh reality now that she's young"
"Could you please show some empathy?! She's just a child!" Charlie protested.
"Charlie's right!" Vaggie stepped forward and put a assuring hand on her girlfriend's shoulder. She was in desperate need of supporters. "And you, dickhead, should learn some manners!" She threatened, pointed at him.
"Why so protective over the little angel?" Alastor asked amused. "Wasn't it just yesterday where she called your love disgusting?"
"She did?" Lucifer asked, his fatherly instincts kicking in now that his daughter and her lover were insulted. "I'm gonna teach that little brat a lesson!" She shoved his hat and headed for Viol's room, but Charlie stood in his way, arms spread.
"Dad, can you please let me talk to Viol? I know what I have to say. She won't listen to you. She barely know you"
Lucifer sighed, aware of his daughter's points. "You're right, Char-char! I think it's better you do the talking. She's more familiar with you, I have garnered"
Charlie gave Vaggie a last look before she headed towards Viol's room. She was about to knock the door when she heard sniffs and muffled cries. For a moment, she hesitated. Maybe this wasn't a good idea. Maybe she should give Viol some space before she confronted her.
Maybe...
But if she turned her back and returned to the lobby, Vaggie would scold her and she would feel bad for not helping the angel kid back when she had her chance. She swallowed her nervousness and knocked the door twice.
She waited a couple of seconds before she heard a tiny whisper between the sniffles.
"Who is this?"
"It's Charlie"
"Oh, come in, then!"
Charlie entered the room, hesitant about the next step. She witnessed Viol lying on her bed, hugging tightly her pillow, which she had buried her face in.
Charlie sighed and leaned to hug Viol, who was still covered in her blankets. "I'm sorry about Alastor. He can be so brutally honest sometimes"
Viol remained silent and Charlie stayed by her side, patting her shoulder. She would let her take as much time as she needed.
"He had no right to say that. At least daddy was in Heaven. And that Alastor guy is in Hell, so who's better?" She tried to sound confident, but her broken voice betrayed her doubt. Charlie could swear she heard her restraint her sobs. She put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Was daddy indeed a horrible person?" Viol asked after a while.
Charlie swallowed hard, cold sweat running down her face. She had came in contact with Adam thrice and each time, he showed an even worse behavior than before, even going as far as to kill her. She despised him and she couldn't bring herself to think of anything nice. Confessing that however would break poor Viol's heart. Instead, she chose a different approach: "Has your mother ever talked about him?"
"Yes, many times..."
"What did she tell you?" Charlie insisted with a weak smile.
Viol closed her eyes. She took a deep breath and opened them again. "She would always say how funny and how brave he was, and how fun she had with him whenever they hanged out and that he played the guitar and was a gifted musician. And that he was the only person whose ideas aligned with hers. Men up in Heaven find mommy scary"
Charlie considered these descriptions for a moment. The funny part was... subjective, to say the least (truth to be told, she was always annoyed with his antics, instead of being amused, since she was the main target of harassment). The brave part... well he did show defiance and great fighting skills, even going as far as to beat Alastor. And he knew how to sing and play the guitar, credits due.
But that didn't change the fact that he was an all around horrible person, a genocidal narcissist who, instead of feeling blessed from being spared, he threw a petty rant about how everyone should be worshipping him. Would he even be a decent enough parent for Viol? Him and Lute seemed pretty close, but she could never imagine them starting a family. Ironic, considering how many kids him and Eve had had to populate the Earth...
Ugh, Christ on a stake, why this was so hard?!
"To be honest, I didn't know enough about your father to form an opinion on him. What do you think about the yearly Exterminations?" she improvised, mentioning an idea both of her parents were fond of.
Viol didn't come with an answer right on the spot. "There must a reason for them to exist" she concluded. "Hell is full of horrible people. Like that one Moth demon who wanted to exploit me"
"And you believe that they deserve to die?"
"If they kept on existing, they would keep up with their sinful lifestyles-"
"That's something your mother have told you?" Charlie guessed.
Viol nodded.
"And what do you think?" The princess asked with wide eyes.
"If my mom says so, then that's the truth"
"So, your entire worldview is based around what your mother has taught you. Maybe it's time to hear a different option" Charlie chose to go with this route and adjusted her position. "Just because they behaved sinfully once, that doesn't mean they can't change for the best! Look at Angel Dust. He saved you from Valentino. Do you think he's evil?"
Viol shook her head embarrassed.
"There we go! We are making progress!" Charlie squeaked and raised her fist in triumph.
Viol couldn't help but chuckle alongside her silliness. The princess always found a way to cheer her up, even at her lowest. "Thank you, Miss Charlie" she said and hugged her. Charlie hugged back. It felt so nice to have a hold a child in your arms. Maybe she and Vaggie should adopt one... Oh, that wasn't the time for these kind of thoughts! "You're not so bad for a bisexual"
"Soon you'll realise that it's not a bad thing to be queer" Charlie said. She started to reconsider the idea of adoption. What if she and Vaggie ended with a kid with the same homophobic beliefs as Viol?
"How did you realize that you were bisexual?" Viol asked.
A embarrassed reddish hue colored Charlie's pale cheeks as she looked at the side, a joyful smirk embracing her face. "I just really liked boys. You know. I've even been in a couple of relationships, though none of them lasted for more than seven years. And I've always found girls hot, though for a long time I thought that it was normal for a girl to find other girls hot. There's no discrimination as opposed to the way men form relationships. And I believe that Vaggie was my first ever bi awaking-"
"And when did you find out?" Viol asked.
"Eleven years ago, when I was 197 years old-"
"One hundred and ninety-seven years old?!" Viol exclaimed, blinking her eyelids rapidly.
"Yup!"
"It took you so many years to do so?!"
"That's right! You don't know when it's gonna hit you, but when it does, you know" she leaned closer and wrapped her arm around the angel's shoulder. Viol responded by burying her face on her forearm. "Does any of this ring a bell to you?"
Viol shook her head.
"That's alright" Charlie said. "You're too young anyways. Maybe you'll discover that when you're on your early teens, or when you're a young adult, or even in your mid-thirties. Who knows? I really hope that even if you find yourself attracted solely to the opposite gender, you won't discriminate against people with different orientations"
"How did you parents react when they found out?" Viol asked, knowing full well that if she ever told her mother that she liked angels of the same gender, she would throw her at the darkest pit of Hell. She tried to shake the idea off.
"My dad is the only one who knows thus far. My mother disappeared years ago-" she explained, her voice and gaze trailing off. She rejoined her cheerful composure and went on with the story. "Anyway, when my father found out, he was shocked at first, but then he went "Oh, you like women?! Me too! We have so many in common"" She chuckled, recoiling the memory.
Viol couldn't help but chuckle along.
Charlie stood and extended her arm. "Shall we return?"
Viol nodded and took her arm.
The rest of the residents and staff of the Hazbin Hotel were dying to find out what had occured. How was the little angel kid that they grew surprisingly fond of in these past two days? Did Charlie managed to calm her down? What exactly did she think about them now that she realized they had killed her father and had opposed the Exorcist army? And most importantly, how should they feel about her now that the cat was out of the bag?
They heard footsteps approaching them and turned their eyes towards the pair. Charlie entered the lobby, holding Viol by the hand. Her eyes were still red and puffy from crying, but fortunately she had calmed down quite a bit.
"How did it go, hun?" Vaggie rushed to Charlie's side the moment she saw her.
"It went pretty well, right Viol?" The princess said and gave an encouraging look at the angel.
Viol nodded reluctantly. "Yeah... I'm sorry-"
"Oh, don't apologize, sweetie. Alastor should be the one to do it instead" Charlie cut her and glared at the Radio Demon, who simply raised his eyebrows amused.
"I'll inform you that I had no ill intentions, my dear. I merely wanted to educate her" Alastor said, which caused Vaggie to sigh in exaggeration.
Viol didn't believe him either, but was glad that the rest of the staff seemed willing to accept her apology and make new amends with her.
And done!
I want to apologize to some of my queer readers. I'm not queer myself, so I don't know how queer folks come to that realization, so I based my assumptions on stories I've heard from the internet. You're free to correct me however.
I also wanna apologize for (again) my long hiatus. In my previous chapter, I promised it would last for a month, but I ended up updating after... three months. Again, I'm terribly sorry. I suffer from severe writer's block and I can't control the times where inspiration hits me. I can't promise this won't happen a second or a third time, which is why I want to write as few chapters for this story as possible. So I can be done with it rather quickly.
Again, thank you for following me and I'll see you soon. Bye!
