SHREYA
Chapter Five: - Dionysus Denies Me Popcorn
I wanted Dionysus's popcorn.
Yeah, I know, a god bursts into the room, starts laughing maniacally and cheering about the Camp being in danger on my very first day here, and the only thing I notice is the popcorn.
I need to fix my priorities.
Chiron furrowed his eyebrows. "What do you mean, Mr. D?"
Mr. D or Dionysus rolled his eyes. "Don't 'what do you mean' me, Chiron." He mocked the Centaur's posh tone. "Have you forgotten the prophecy?" Chiron sighed deeply. "Mr D that prophecy won't come into play in probably another millennia-"
"Don't be so ignorant, Chiron. Four children come to camp at once- if they get claimed by their parents the prophecy is complete" Mr D huffed, popping a piece of popcorn in his mouth. Chiron looked uncomfortable. "Prophecy?" Alyssa spoke up. "Uhh… is this in the other books?"
I shook my head.
"Let them get used to this place, first. Springing a prophecy on them on their first day would be unwise" Chiron glanced at us. So, what are your names?"
We introduced ourselves as Chiron stroked his beard.
"I see. Welcome to camp, Ritisha, Alyssa, Sanha and… Shreya." I winced. He had mispronounced all our names, but he had butchered mine. Mr. D laughed. I glanced at him.
"Can I have your popcorn?"
"No."
In the afternoon, Chiron had arranged a call to our parents. I dialled my father's number, anxiety bubbling up my chest. He picked up the call after two rings.
"Yes?" He spoke up. I immediately rushed with my words switching to Marathi. "Dad, I went on the trip I told you about, but then I got chased by a Minotaur and now I'm in Camp-Half-Blood and I might be a part of a prophecy." I rushed.
"…Shreya? What are you…how… do you know how worried I was? I was going to book a flight straight to the US!" He exclaimed, but calmed down. "You're in Camp-Half-Blood? Give the phone to Chiron." I didn't question how or why he knew about Chiron. I handed the phone to Chiron and stepped back to stand with my friends.
"That prophecy…are we a part of it?" Sanha whispered. "We're literally giving main character energy right now."
"I wanna die." Ritisha murmured.
I glanced at Chiron. My dad was the last person they needed to call. Soon, Chiron set the phone down, and got up from his wheelchair. His torso was neatly attached to the lower body of a horse. None of us were fazed.
"You're parents aren't happy, but they understand. They've been preparing for this moment for a while, after all." Chiron turned and stared outside at the setting sun wistfully. We took it as our cue to leave.
"I think I don't wanna live anymore like Ritisha." Alyssa admitted as we stared at the grassy fields. "I want to go home."
"Now that we're more aware that we are demigods, won't we be attacked often?" I glanced at the three beside me. "But then, we were never attacked before. How?"
"I don't know, we must be kids of minor gods then." Sanha shrugged. We stared at the strawberry fields, and the archery area. This place was huge.
I glanced at Alyssa, who was zoned out, probably panicking. "But that doesn't explain the Minotaur."
"Or that skeleton thing I did." Ritisha added. We didn't say anything, but I knew everyone was thinking the same as me.
We entered the dining area. Nico and Will were debating about something light-heartedly.
"This is all so confusing." I huffed. "Mr. D's talking about some prophecy, we don't have a satyr, no monsters ever attacked us, and we're practically lost here!"
Chiron galloped (walked? trotted?) to the dining area, Dionysus beside him. For some reason, Dionysus grinned and Chiron's eyes widened. They were looking somewhere… above my head?
"What?" I glanced around. Everyone was shocked. "Why is every-" Chiron cleared his throat. "Shreya Parmar, daughter of Athena, goddess of wisdom and strategy."
I stared at the shimmering hologram of the owl above me.
