"You remember where to drop your brother off, right?"
Sky turned her head to face her dad, as she grabbed the car keys off the counter.
"Yup! Hobbs Field Middle!"
She responded with a smile before calling out to her brother.
"Jordan! Are you ready to go?"
She stood by the stairs waiting for a response.
"I'm coming down!"
A boy yelled before rushing down the stairs and out the door.
"Bye, Dad!"
Jordan cried out as he hurried out the door. Sky watched him briefly before waving at her dad and heading to the car.
"You think I'm gonna be late?"
Jordan asked, buckling his seatbelt.
"What time does your school start again?"
"8:30."
Sky checked her watch.
"We've got time."
She smiled as she pulled out of the driveway. Both front windows were down, and the air felt heavy, unlike her old lake house in New Brunswick. The car was silent yet calm as Sky drove her brother to school.
"Remind me, when do we see mom again?"
Jordan asked, turning over to face his sister.
"Every other weekend."
She said with a smile. At least she tried to. Sky was taking her parent's divorce pretty hard. Moving provinces also took a toll on her, but it was nothing new. Sky pulled into the drop-off line and looked towards her brother.
"Are you excited?"
"Kinda."
She put a hand on Jordan's shoulder.
"It's gonna be hard, but you come from one of the strongest families out there. And if I could survive Total Drama, then you can get through 6th grade, okay?"
He smiled, looking at his sister.
"I'll try."
He hopped out of the car and walked into the entrances as Sky pulled out of the school and headed off to Maple Greene High School. She turned on the radio, only to hear Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift. If anything could get Sky through a hard time, it was Taylor Swift. She found her parking spot and hurried out of her car towards the front of the building, where she was bombarded by crowds of students and noises from every square inch of the school. Sky wasn't used to big schools. Her high school had a maximum of 400 kids, while Maple Greene had a little over 1,000. Overstimulation wasn't going to break her spirit though. If anything, it'd motivate her more. Sky had no trouble facing adversity. She took a crumpled-up piece of paper out of her pocket to reveal her four classes that day.
"Okay… AP English, Chemistry, Art, and PE."
She muttered to herself as she bumped into other students. Some kids stared, but that wasn't too unusual for Sky. She was practically a celebrity back at her old school because of her reality TV endeavors. Sky looked at her paper and hurried into her English class.
"I wonder how Shawn's doing."
She thought to herself. This thought was interrupted when she noticed a familiar face. Dave.
"Shit…"
She whispered, turning her head away, hoping he didn't see her. The two didn't exactly end on good terms, and she could say the same about Keith. But at least Keith didn't try to kill her. Maybe Dave wasn't crazy anymore? Even if he weren't, he'd probably still be mad. Sky tried forgetting about Dave until she heard two familiar voices behind her.
"So, your sister tried killing herself… again?"
"That's what I said! She couldn't even get it right the first time."
"And Topher was there."
"Yeah, we were gonna gossip about Jo and get Taco Bell."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Cause I need you to walk to the gym with me so I can talk Jo into letting me skip the game due to Samey's "unfortunate" condition."
Scarlett and Amy were standing and chatting at the desk beside hers. She gave a glance that didn't go unnoticed. Sky and Scarlett weren't on good terms, and despite barely interacting, even Sky knew that Amy was a bad person. She was about to hyperventilate before she felt a tap on her shoulder.
"Sky?"
Amy asked her before she looked at her and nodded.
"Mhm…?"
She said, slight tears welling up.
"When did you get here?"
Scarlett questioned.
"Oh, I just transferred."
She awkwardly smiled at the two before Amy looked to the other side of the room, directly at Dave.
"So weren't you and him like… a thing? I can't rewatch the show. Too much mental trauma."
"Dave?"
Scarlett replied to the blonde.
"Yeah, him, heard some shit went down. He gets bullied hard here if it makes you feel any better."
Amy said to Sky, turning over to where she was sitting.
"Yeah, It's kinda awkward seeing him here."
"We can cover for you if you need, the English teacher's like 1000 years old, I don't think she'll notice our seats moving."
Amy said, scooching her and Scarlett's desks closer to Sky.
"You'd do that for me?"
Sky asked, bewildered. These were two of the most evil girls on the show, and they were actively trying to help her.
"I mean, Dave is practically insane. We're just looking out for you."
"Plus, you were like… one of the normal ones. I never really had a problem with you."
Sky smiled at the two.
"If you really need to, you can sit with us at lunch. Topher's gonna be there too."
"Chris-obsessed Topher? You guys hang out with him?"
Sky asked the two.
"He's way better now, I think we all are."
Scarlett said to Sky with a slight smile.
"Yeah, I haven't threatened to kill Samey since, like… Sophomore year."
"Oh, your sister! How's she doing?"
Sky asked, already feeling a bit better.
"She jumped out of her window last night. Me and Toph found her and we had to call 911. I think she's in a coma or something.'
Sky's smile quickly faded.
"I-is she gonna be okay?"
"Probably. Samey's always dramatic like that, and I don't even abuse her anymore."
Amy simply shrugged as Sky awkwardly looked away.
"Are you planning on trying out for anything? I recall you being somewhat athletic."
Scarlett asked her, trying to relieve the awkwardness.
"This school is much bigger than my old one. Do you guys have a gymnastics team or-"
"Nope."
Amy cut her off.
"We have a cheer team, though. When did you say tryouts were, Amy?"
Scarlett noted.
"Tomorrow after school, you should come and watch me beat up a ton of freshmen!"
Amy said gleefully as the two gave her a condescending stare.
"Oh, and try out for the cheer squad, I guess."
Amy muttered, looking back at Sky.
"That sounds great!"
Sky exclaimed, just as the bell rang and the two girls got up.
"Feel free to join us at lunch if you need to."
Amy waved at Sky as she and Scarlett walked out of the room talking. Sky had so many questions. Why did so many of the Pahkitew kids go to this school? Why were Amy and Scarlett so nice to her? Was it true that everyone changed? Does that include Dave? Maybe he wasn't that insane anymore. However, walking to class, she remembered the grim details she had overheard about Samey earlier. Or was it Sammy? She went by one of the two names. Sky wondered if she was okay. She even wondered if Amy was telling the truth about leaving her alone as she was walking to chemistry. Those two weren't the most trustworthy, from what she heard. Sky was even debating whether or not to sit with them at lunch today, let alone try out for the cheer team. Just as she was reaching her room, she stumbled upon the school lobby, filled with trophies and banners. She was looking at the championship banners when she noticed one for the cheerleading team.
[CANADA'S BEST STATE CHEER COMPETITION WINNER, MAPLE GREENE 2014]
2014 was the year of Pahkitew and was Sky's freshmen year. She stared at the poster board and noticed a familiar figure at the bottom. Amy. And Samey. She noticed her twin sitting next to her with a very solemn smile on her face. She had nothing behind her eyes and almost looked like a corpse, something. It felt weird looking at Samey in such an innocent photo, knowing where she would be a mere 2 years later. Maybe she'd still be cheering if it wasn't for Pahkitew. Sky stood there staring until she heard the late bell, which prompted her to sprint to her next classroom.
