Chapter 36: The Last One
It's a normal day for Yuki's family on the weekend. Everyone is at home relaxing instead of going out somewhere for a little change of pace. It's all well and good. Of course, that peace and quite doesn't last forever. As Yuki and everyone are outside in the garden enjoying an afternoon lunch, May walks over.
"Milady, Ser Fuyumi, Lady Yuki, we have a visitor waiting for us at the front gate," May says.
"Huh? I don't recall expecting any guests today. What about you, Fuyumi?" Emilia asks, Fuyumi merely shakes her head. "And the rest of you?' she gets more shaking heads in return. "May, who is this guest?"
"It is Lady Sophia Ramona. She said she wished to speak with you all. I noted that she was carrying a suitcase when she approached the gate," May responds.
"Sophia is here?" Yuki looks confused.
"Hmm, let's see what this is about. May, bring Lady Sophia to my study. We'll all speak there," Emilia stands up.
May bows, "As you wish, Milady,"

They bring Sophia to Emilia's study to speak. Yuki was a little worried about her ever since the trial of Valmeck, but she seems to be okay. If anything, she seems happier for some reason. She states she had to tell them all something very important. They wondered what it was, but it was not what they were expecting...
"You left not only your house, but the Ramona family as well?!" Hiei seemed to be the most shocked of all.
"Indeed. I severed all ties with my former family, well, if you can even call it a family. I decided I wouldn't let the man who sold me off to an old pervert like some object for money dictate my fate. I would chart my own course from now on. I learned that important lesson from you, Yuki," Sophia says, smiling happily.
"Forgive me for saying this, but you don't seem upset at all after cutting ties with them. Even if that means giving up that power, wealth, and status, mind you. Most nobles wouldn't dream of doing such a thing," Hana notes.
"Good thing I'm not most nobles then. Even all the money in the world can't fill the void of an empty heart. Besides, I got to beat the duke and his son up a little bit for all the abuse they put me through. It was worth it. So, from now on, I am no longer Sophia Ramona. I am just Sophia. My mother was a simple maid, so I'm technically half-commoner anyway," Sophia says.
"I see. Well, I suppose we should congratulate you on your liberation. However, if you don't mind me asking, what do you plan to do now without your former family's support? I imagine it won't be so easy for you," Emilia asks.
"Yes. I merely came here to inform you all of what happened back at the duke's estate. I also wanted to thank you all for all the support and kindness you have shown me thus far. As for what I'll do now... Without the duke's backing, I won't be able to continue my studies at the Royal Academy, especially since I'm technically no longer a duke's daughter. I am adept at water magic and have some skills in business. I suppose I could do some work as a mercenary to get some funds going and use that to travel a bit. After that, I'll look into starting a business of my own. It won't be easy, but I'm sure I can make it work," Sophia explains.
Yuki imagines that might be tougher than it sounds. And the worst part may come from the people she'll meet. There are some commoners who don't have a very high opinion of nobles, and understandably so. Her mother Fuyumi has also told her about how some mercenaries, mostly men, are total perverts and may try to put the moves on Sophia. Sophia can certainly defend herself, but it would still make Yuki worry. The other side of that issue would be the nobility. Just like her former father proved, some nobles look down on commoners. They may even have worse opinions of her, a noble who lost, whether willingly or not, all her status as a noble and became a simple commoner. If she were to return to school, there are sure to be those who would mock her either to her face or behind her back. And if she tried to go straight into a business without graduating from the academy or without a noble's support, it would be very hard to get the business running. There are even some men who don't like the idea of a woman running a successful business, so they may interfere in her efforts for stupid reasons. All-in-all, it will be very hard for Sophia to get by for a while, maybe even longer.
Emilia glances over, noticing her daughter's worried expression. She looks at Fuyumi, who shares a knowing smile with her.
"Well, in that case, why not stay here?" Emilia offers.
"H-Huh?" Sophia stutters.
"Mother?" Yuki is also confused.
"If you were to try this little plan of yours on your own, it will be very difficult for you. Knowing that, I can see that my daughter is incredibly worried for your sake. I can't speak about the rest of your former family, but you have shown you have a spirit of integrity. What's more, you genuinely care about my daughter. And I know she has come to care about you. So, here is what I propose. I will fund your continued education at the royal academy so you graduate. You're a year ahead of my daughter and her friends, but at least you can still see each other there from time to time. I can't adopt you into the family, especially without your former family's consent. And I don't know how your former father will react to that. I can, however, take you in and hire you as a servant. It would be the same thing as when we took in May into our service. Only without the whole prisoner of war thing, though she's long past that by now," Emilia explains.
"And I can train you on how to be a proper maid," May adds.
"At least, that way, you can stay here, and make some income for your work as a maid. Think of it as savings for your future business. As for a possible marriage with Yukitsuki, that is up to her, not me," Emilia says.
"Sure, I wouldn't mind at all," Yuki says just like that.
Sophia blushes, "Y-Yuki! I... I'm glad you think that way, but that is an important decision that shouldn't be rushed. Besides, if you marry me, with me being damaged goods now, it might hurt your reputation at school and in noble society,"
"I don't see any problem with it. I want to marry you and you want to marry me. I care about you and you care about me. Seems like an easy decision to me. Besides, if anyone has a problem with it, I'll just freeze them and leave them frozen until they change their minds," Yuki says, not batting an eye with her eerie threat.
Anelia facepalms with a sigh, "She still needs to work on that personality quirk of hers,"
"Well, now with all of that discussed, what do you say, Sophia? Care to join the family?" Emilia asks.
Sophia turns to Yuki's lovers, "Well, what do you two think about it? This affects you a great deal as well,"
"Eh I don't mind. Could be fun," Veronica shrugs her shoulders.
"If that's what Yuki wants, then I'm fine with it as well," Hana agrees.
"I admit, there are times where you still irritate me a bit, but... you've proven your love for Yuki is genuine. So, I believe we can trust you. As long as you look out for Yuki, we'll look out for you," Hiei gives her own approval.
Sophia looks between all of them, seeing nothing but heartwarming and supportive smiles before her. She lets out a few tears of joy and relief before wiping them away.
"Thank you, all of you. I promise I won't let you all down. You most of all, Yuki. I'm so happy right now," Sophia says.
Emilia claps her hands, "Excellent, then let's take care of the finer details of this little deal of ours,"
They work out the official documents for hiring her own as a maid and the document for her betrothal to Yukitsuki. Normally, this would require discussions between both families, but since Sophia severed her ties with the Ramona family and had no other family, and she willingly gave her consent, they got that part done in much less time.
"Of course, we have to consider the possibility that Duke Ramona might try something. Not in the sense of him wanting his daughter back, but trying to take back a useful pawn or property," Fuyumi notes, a little concerned.
"Maybe, but my former father has always tried to make himself look good in the eyes of the public. Trying to force me to return will only force me to reveal the abuse he and his son have thrusted upon me throughout my life there," Sophia replies.
"I'll speak to the king on this matter. The royal family has always shown us support in times of need," Emilia says.
"I'll go with you. Ramona may be a duke, but he can't do anything to a dragon princess. I'll make sure he doesn't try anything stupid," Hikaru smirks.
"Okay, then with that settled, let's get you set up with a room here at the estate," Yuki says, grabbing Sophia's hand and pulling her along with the rest of her group following.
"She really is like you, Fuyumi. That's three fiances and one mistress. Maybe she really is trying to break your record," Hikaru teases her mate.
Fuyumi blushes, "It's not like I was trying to build a harem. Things just happened!" she retorts, making the other women giggle.
Elsewhere, Yuki and her friends set Sophia up in one of the servant's rooms. The room itself is nice enough, with the necessary furniture for her. She didn't bring that many personal belongings with her. Yuki will rectify that in due time.
"Thanks again, Yuki. I originally intended to come here just to inform you of recent events, offer my thanks, and then bid you farewell. I wasn't expecting you to do all of this for me," Sophia says, packing the last of her things away.
"I couldn't allow that. Like with Hiei, Hana, and Veronica, you're important to me. I wanted to help you," Yuki replies.
"Yes. I see that now. You are important to me, too. I promise: no more secrets or games or secret agendas. Whatever you see before you when you look at me is what I am," Sophia says.
"Is everything taken care of?" May walks in.
"Yes, we just finished. I look forward to learning under you, Lady May," Sophia curtsies.
"Just May is fine. And don't thank me just yet," May says.
Sophia gets confused and looks to the others. For some strange reason, Yuki and the others are giving her looks of sympathy or pity.
"Our condolences," Yuki mutters.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Sophia is getting worried.
As it turns out, May is a very stern and brutal teacher when it comes to learning the ways of the maid. Whether that's how she was taught or how she developed it herself, no one knows. And no one dares to ask either.
