The next chapter is here! Enjoy :)
Mia awoke earlier the next morning to the soft chiming alarm on her iPhone.
She grabbed her phone off of the nightstand and turned it off. Then she lazily got up and walked across the bedroom to open the roller shades on her windows to let light into the dark room.
The sky was still overcast from the storm last night, but it had stopped snowing. The whole area around her house and the nearby woods was blanketed in a soft sheet of snow.
The young woman let out a sigh, because it looked like another day stuck inside. But then, it's not like she has been able to get out much regardless due to the cold temperatures. Except for when she would let her dog out for a run or to do his business.
Though there have been some mild days in between the freezing days. To her, it seemed like Mother Nature was being quite the bipolar bitch this winter season, that's for sure.
Then she remembered what happened last night and her supposed 'guest' who was taking up the guestroom.
Apart of her is still wondering if it was some crazy dream. But she figures she will know for sure when she checks out the guestroom to see if it is occupied or not.
Before she does though, she grabs her clean pair of folded clothes off of the top of her dresser and makes a b-line for her bathroom.
She heads in and closes the door, before setting her folded up clothes on top of the toilet seat. Then she turns around and starts up the shower. Mia then sheds her sweatpants, tank top, undies, and socks before jumping in to shower.
After a small handful of minutes, she was finished and exited the shower. She dried herself off, put on some body lotion, and then dressed.
Mia then exited the bathroom and heard her dog get up with a stretch and yawn from his dog bed in the corner of the bedroom. He then got up and padded over to her, wagging his tail.
Tundra nuzzled his wet nose into her hand, and she gave him a small smile, while reaching up to pet him.
Her light gaze then turned from him to her bedroom door.
She headed over to her door and unlocked it. Then she slowly opened her door and stepped out into the hallway. It was quiet as she walked down the few feet to the guestroom on the opposite side of the hall.
The door was closed, and she hesitantly lifted a hand to the door. At first, she thought about knocking. But if there really was someone in there, she didn't want to wake them. Still, she needed to know if someone truly was in the guestroom or if what happened last night truly was just some crazy and vivid dream.
Her hand went to the metal doorknob, and she slowly twisted it.
Then she slowly pushed open the door, luckily it hardly made a noise as it slid over the soft carpeting in the room. Mia only opened it a crack to peer inside. Her eyes widened a little when she saw a figure in the bed, and it was the same man from last night.
He was lying on his side, facing her, and appeared to still be fast asleep.
So, he was real, and he was here. Which meant his very strange and unexplainable arrival here was real too. It also meant he may be here for a while, seeing as he didn't have anywhere to go.
Already, Mia was unsure on whether or not she was looking forward to this arrangement. Seeing as he still was a stranger and she didn't know anything about him, other than his name. It was certainly a strange one she'll never forget. Yet, appealing at the same time.
Just like him. Seeing as she didn't overlook the fact that he was quite handsome.
She shook her head and stepped away from the door. Nope she's not going down that route again. At least not right now. She just still felt like she wasn't ready.
Mia just turned away from the door and continued down the hall. She exited it and entered the living room, crossing it to go into the kitchen off to her right that was off of the living.
Figures she may as well get breakfast started, especially now that she was going to be cooking for two.
Before starting though, she walked over to the back door at the back of the kitchen and opened it. Then called her dog over, gesturing for him to go outside and use the bathroom.
After Tundra ran out into the fenced in backyard, she closed the door. Then she went over and filled his dog bowl for when he came in afterwards.
Then she went over to the kitchen cabinets and started getting the things out she will need to cook with.
She placed the two skillets on the stovetop then went into the fridge to get some food out and grabbed the eggs, bacon, and butter. Mia brought everything over to the counter and went to work preparing breakfast.
Adar knew she had been there standing at the door. He wasn't completely asleep when he heard a soft rustle across the room of the door opening quietly.
While he maybe a human now, it still didn't erase centuries of instincts and awareness of one's surroundings. Not only that but he was a light sleeper and last night he had awoken on and off a couple times.
Afterwards, he thought he heard her walk away, hearing her muted footsteps on the thin rug that ran along the length of the hall.
That was when he finally did open his eyes. He didn't get up right away though, just continued lying there for a few more minutes. Until he started noticing a faint, yet alluring smell start filtering in through the slight open door. It smelt like...food.
The smell started making his stomach grumble.
Adar slowly sat, letting the thick covers pool around his waist. With the natural light of the morning now peering in through the blinds, he could see the room better in this lighting. The room looked bigger, and he could clearly see his things were still neatly piled on top of the dresser.
He wasn't looking around for long when he heard more rustling sounds from across the bedroom.
His gaze shifted over to see the door open more. Though instead of seeing the young woman pop in again, it was her pet wolf. It nosed its way through the slightly open door, opening it wider to squeeze its large body through.
Once it was all the way in, it set its strange colored eyes on him and started walking over.
Adar remained where he was on the bed, bet kept watching it as it drew closer to his position. He was wary of the animal, unsure of what it would do. That is until it did something he wasn't expecting.
It jumped up, placing its front paws on the bed, then it leaned in and licked his face.
He scrunched up his face and pulled back a little. Yet the animal proceeded to lick him a couple more times. Afterwards, it pulled away and dropped back down onto the carpet, wagging its bushy tail.
The former elf had briefly only seen similar behaviors like this in dogs. Usually, it was meant as a friendly gesture.
While he was still a little unsure, he took the chance and rotated his lower half, dropping his feet to the floor. Then he stood up from the bed. The dog ended up sitting down, yet still wagged his tail, and cocked his head a little to the side as he curiously eyed the new guest.
Adar then took a couple steps forward, moving around the animal.
Once he cleared it and headed for the door, that was when it popped up and started following him out the door.
He walked down the hall and as he reached the end, the inviting smell got stronger. It ended up leading him into the living room and then he heard some sounds coming through a wide-open archway further down the wall on the right side leading out of the living room.
He walked over and looked inside. That was when he saw the young woman with her back to him fiddling away with something in front of her. He saw a faint puff of smoke rising into the air and realized she was in fact cooking something.
The pet wolf that stood beside him momentarily when he stopped by the archway, entered the kitchen, its paws made a soft clacking sound as it walked across the tiled floor.
He noted she has yet to look away from what she was doing and was still preparing the meal.
Not wanting to startle her, he lightly cleared his throat, trying to get her attention. Sadly, even doing that seemed to make her jump a little.
Mia was so preoccupied with what she was doing, she didn't realize someone else entered the kitchen area. While she did hear Tundra come bounding in, she didn't expect to have a visitor come in as well.
So, when she heard the distinct sound of someone clearing their throat, it gave her a little start, making her jump a little.
Then she turned around to see her new houseguest standing by the archway with his gaze on her.
"Forgive me, I didn't mean to startle you. Was trying to gain your attention without doing so." He stated, in an apologetic tone.
She gave him a faint smile, "It's ok. Chalk it up to I'm just so used to being alone here that I quickly forgot someone else was here too."
"Understandable." He replied.
There was a moment of silence before either of them spoke again.
"Anyways, would you like to take a seat? Breakfast is just about done." She suggested, while lightly gesturing to the round wooden table of to the side near the corner.
"Thank you." He says.
Adar then went and sat down at the table.
As he made his way over though, Mia noticed how his shirt appeared to be riddled with many odd holes. If she didn't know any better, it looked like there was something dark dried up around the holes.
Just what happened to this guy?
Guess it's just another question to add to her already growing list of them that she wanted to ask him, and she will ask after breakfast. Considering she really wants to know his story and where he's from. She already had a feeling wherever he's from, is nothing like here. Especially, after seeing how he reacted to little things like lights being turned on or the look on his face as he eyed the inside of her home as they walked in from outside.
Within the next couple minutes, she started loading up the plates with scrambled eggs and bacon. She also pulled a couple slices of whole wheat toast out of the toaster oven and threw them on the plate.
Then she walked over and set the plates down on the kitchen table, putting his down right in front of him.
"What would you like to drink? Water? Coffee? Tea?" She asks.
"Water is fine, thank you." He tells her.
While he knew what tea was, he was unsure what this coffee was that she has mentioned.
Mia went back to the cabinets and pulled out a couple glasses. Then went to fill them in the refrigerator. He watched, intrigued on how she put the glasses within this indented rectangle, then a drizzle of water came out the top of the rectangle and filled the glass.
While this world was strange, he was starting to find certain things about it to be rather fascinating.
Once both glasses were filled, she brought them to the table and placed his down by his plate before placing hers down next to her plate. Afterwards, she took a seat across from him.
At least the food was recognizable, it was clearly eggs and bacon. Though he was a little unsure about the strange rectangular piece of food that was rounded on one side. Perhaps it was...bread? By the looks of it, it appeared to be toasted too.
He picked up the cutlery that was next to his plate and began eating.
It's either the food was very good, or he was just very hungry. His eyes then drifted to these little glass tubes with flat bottoms and what looked like metal tops. There appeared to be little holes dotting the top of the metal part.
Mia saw his eyes flicker over to the salt and pepper shakers.
"Feel free to put some salt or pepper on the food if you want." She said, while gesturing to the shakers.
So that's what was inside of them.
While he ignored the pepper shaker, he did reach over and take the saltshaker. He tipped it over in his hand over his pate and saw the salt drop out of the tiny holes in the top.
She tried not to smile in amusement as he sat there just holding the shaker on its side, letting the salt spill out.
"It works better if you shake it." Mia told him, with a hint of amusement in her eyes.
His gaze went to her and saw a tiny smile on her face and a flicker of amusement in her gaze.
He's unsure why, but he felt a little embarrassed that he was using something that was so simple, wrong. He quickly brushed it aside though and started to lightly shake it. This made the salt come out quicker.
When he finished sprinkling so salt onto his scrambled eggs, Mia reached over and put both some salt and pepper on hers, before starting to eat.
"I have a feeling...there is a lot here for me to learn about. Things...I have never seen or used before." He admits.
"And that is fine. I'll show you. Most of the things are actually very easy to learn how to use here." She assured him.
Adar gave her a brief nod, then his gaze flickered to something else on the table next to her. It was flat and rectangular.
"What is that? If you don't mind me asking." He inquired, while gesturing to the object in question.
Her gaze went to her iPhone, sitting not far from her arm on the table.
Mia put down her fork and picked it up, showing it to him.
"This is a phone. It's used to communicate with other people at long distances." She told him.
He furrowed his brows a little at that.
He couldn't see how something like that can contact other people. Obviously, it didn't look like something you could right on, like paper if you were to write out a message to send to someone far away.
"How is this done? It clearly doesn't look like you don't write on it and send it out to someone." Adar says.
"No, you don't write on it. I will show you how it works after breakfast. Though...I also have some questions for you too afterwards. Is it ok we go into the living room and talk when we're done in here?" She requested.
He knew she would have questions. No doubt, wondering where he came from, and to show her that he was grateful for her taking him in when she did last night, he will indulge her.
"Of course." He replied.
"Thanks." She said.
It wasn't much longer until they were finished eating and she took their plates to the sink to rinse them off. Afterwards, she opened up the dishwasher and loaded the plates, forks, and knives in there along with the glasses.
Adar watched her open up this strange metal box and put the plates and utensils inside it after rinsing them off under a spout in the sink.
He knows he has plenty of time later to ask her what all these strange items were in the home. For now, he will answer whatever questions she has for him first.
She closed the dishwasher and made her way across the kitchen then they walked out together and into the living room.
Mia led them over to the couch and sat down. He took a seat next to her near the other end of the leather couch. Where they sat in silence for a few moments.
"What is it, you would like to ask?" Adar asked her.
There was a brief moment of hesitance before she finally opened her mouth to speak.
"Well, to start let me just say how you came to be here...was really nothing short of strange. I was just standing out there on the beach. Next thing I know, the wind kicks up and starts blowing the snow all around in circles. The snow started to rapidly blow around faster until it created this solid swirling ball of snow not far from where I was standing.
Then I saw this strange bright light form within this ball of snow. It must've lasted all but a few seconds, before the ball of snow suddenly dispersed and blew apart. Next thing I saw, where this ball of snow used to be, was you...lying there in the snow on the ground. It's like you just suddenly...appeared out of nowhere. So, I think the first thing I must ask is...where did you come from?" Mia asks.
So, she was there when he was sent here by the Valar.
"Where I come from...is a place called Middle Earth. Situated in the world of Arda. Originally, I dwelled in the Misty Mountains for a long period of time, before...relocating to Mordor." He answered.
At first, she was wondering what the hell kind of places were these. Until it clicked and had her floored.
'No fucking way!'Her mind screamed.
Middle Earth!? As in... Lord of the Rings!? No! That can't be possible! It doesn't exist! does it!?
While she wasn't very into Lord of the Rings, she had a cousin and couple friends who were huge Lord of the Rings and Hobbit nerds. One of her best friends had her binge watch this latest Lord of the Rings Show with her on Amazon not that long ago when they had one of their hang out days, where she went over her friend's house a couple months ago on day with particularly shitty weather.
While there, she sat Mia down, and they spent the whole day binge watching the show, going through all the episodes in both seasons.
If she didn't just see this guy suddenly appear out of thin air and just had stumbled across him lying on the ground, she probably would've thought him crazy.
But she was there when he appeared, and dressed in strange garb that would've been very similar to the type of clothing they would apparently wear in Middle Earth. Between those details and throw in his odd mannerisms and speech, and she really has no reason to doubt him.
"Can't say I know of any places like that here that exist. This world is called Earth and while it has many continents, countries, and vast regions I don't believe those are one of them." She tells him.
What she told him only confirmed further that he was on another completely different world, separate from the only one he ever knew.
"Then I truly am further from the world I knew than I know." He says.
Though the way he says it, seemed more like he was saying it to himself than to her.
Like last night, Mia saw a glimpse of a lost look in his eyes as well as sorrow. It made her feel really bad for him.
"I'm sorry, Aerin. I understand, it's a lot to take in. Would be for anyone. I also know it will be quite an adjustment here for you as well. Seeing as...I'm guessing a lot of things you have seen here so far, are not like many of the things you would see on your world." She surmised.
Though she already knew it wasn't. The world of Lord of the Rings was set in a Medieval Time-like Setting.
It really explained why he looked at the lights when she turned them on as something very strange, same with the other things he saw her use so far around the house.
"No, they are not. Never seen anything like the things I have seen here so far. Everything is...different." Adar said.
"Well, as I told you before, I can show you how things work here. Help you adjust." Mia assured him.
"Thank you, I really appreciate any help I can receive. I know I'll need it. Especially, if I am to dwell here on this world from here on out." He said.
He really did appreciate her generous offer too, because even if he was usually very good at adapting to new surroundings and learning how to survive, he is still unsure if that would be the case for here. He doesn't know any of the lands here nor nothing about its people and society.
The little he has seen so far, kind of points to a society that some would say...is very advanced.
"You're welcome." Mia said, with a soft smile.
He couldn't help but offer a small smile back.
"So, what would you like to learn about first?" She asks, with a hint of playful enthusiasm.
Something he caught and found it to be amusing.
"I think, before we start these 'lessons' I need to relieve myself first. Is there somewhere here I can go for that?" He asks.
"Yeah, the bathroom. There's a toilet in there." She told him.
Then she got up from the couch and gestured for him to follow her.
He got up and followed as she led him out of the living room. While he didn't understand the term 'toilet' it must be similar to something someone would use back home on Middle Earth. Though he couldn't understand why it would be in the same area as the bath.
She led him into the hall and to the first door on the right.
Despite some light filtering in through the window, the lighting was still a tad poor because it was overcast skies outside and not sunny. So, she turned the light on so they can see what was in the bathroom better.
"On the right side of the bathroom here is the toilet, next to it is the sink and this over here on the left is the tub which is also a shower. This little narrow door here, next to the tub is where we keep the extra towels." She informed him.
Mia opened the narrow wooden door and showed him the towels. He saw a bunch of neatly folded towels stacked on top of one another on a couple wooden shelves beyond the door.
Then she turned to the toiled and walked over to it.
"I like to think this is pretty self-explanatory. It's obviously where you relieve yourself. Then you flush it when your done to get rid of the waste." She says.
She pressed down on the little lever on the side of the toilet to show him how to use it.
He heard it make an odd sound, before watching the water in the bowl start to drain down this hole in the bottom, while at the same time water trickled down from the back refilling the bowl.
"This white roll next to the toilet jutting from the wall is something called toilet paper. Though you only need to tear off a few pieces to use it to wipe yourself when you poop. Afterwards, you toss it into the toilet bowl here and flush it down with the waste." She said, pointing to the roll of toilet paper.
Afterwards, she stepped over to sink next to the toilet.
"Here's the sink. You turn it on and off like this." She says, while she grasps one of the two handles and pulled it to turn on the water, then pushed it back to turn it off.
"This clear container next to one of the handles is the soap you use to help wash your hands when your done using the toilet and right here hanging on the wall next to it is the hand towel to dry your hands off." She explained, while gesturing to the soap and hand towel.
He nodded in understanding. It all seemed pretty simple, especially since she showed him how these things work while explaining them to him.
"Why does the sink have two handles though?" He asked.
"The right handle is for cold water and the left handle here is for hot water. But if you pull both handles out, at the same time, you will get warm water because both the hot and cold water would be mixing together." She explains.
Mia showed him by turning both handles towards her, turning back on the water.
"It won't turn warm right away, you have to wait a few seconds for the temperature to adjust. But the cold water is instant, and the hot water just take a couple seconds to heat up and become hot." She said.
Then she pushed back both the handles, turning the water off and turning back to him.
"Do you need me to show you one more time how one of these things work or you think you got it?" She asked.
"I understand how they work. Thank you." He tells her.
"Ok, I'll leave you to it then so you can go ahead and relieve yourself." She told him.
Then she left the bathroom and went back down the hall and back into the living room to wait for him. She heard the bathroom door close once she stepped foot into the living room.
A couple minutes went by before she heard the toilet flush. A few more moments floated by before she heard the bathroom door open, then he came walking through the doorway that led out from the hall and back into the living room.
He saw she was back to sitting on the coach so, he joined her and sat back down.
"What would you like to learn about next?" She asked.
Adar looked around the room until something caught his eye in front of the couch across the room.
"That object right there above your hearth." He said, gesturing to the thing on the wall above the fireplace.
Mia already knew he was talking about the TV.
Something told her he may be weirded out by it or find it fascinating. Either way, she knew she would have to show him at some point and that apparently was now.
The young woman reached down to grab the remote off of the wooden coffee table in front of the couch.
"This object right here, is probably one of our greatest technological advances. It's called a TV." She told him.
Then he watched as she pointed this little black stick towards it.
Suddenly the black screen in front of them came on revealing a... moving picture with sound?
Mia watched his reaction. She saw him lean his head back a little as his eyes rapidly looked over the screen with a mixture of confusion, shock, and astonishment.
"How...is this possible?" He asked, while looking at the screen with people moving about and talking on it.
The young woman did her best to break it all down and explain to him in the simplest way possible how it works as well as the other wide variety of functions it can do. This ended up taking her a while to explain a lot of it to him. There was just so much involved when it came to the TV, that she doesn't expect him to understand it all right away. But then he doesn't have to really know how to record or save shows and movies just yet. Or how to access the TV Apps like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc...
By the end of whole explanation, he did seem to find the whole concept very interesting.
It was also amazing how she showed him you can speak into the stick and tell it what you want to watch, and it will turn up on the TV. She gave him an example on how it works. Mia pressed the speaker button and said the words, 'History Channel' into it and it automatically took her there.
Right now, they had on an interesting show about Ancient Egypt.
Something he must've found truly fascinating, because he requested if they could leave this show on and watch. So, Mia left it on for him and they ended up spending the next hour learning about one of the most famous ancient Egyptian Dynasties along with its Pharaohs and their bloodline.
To her relief, he seems to be taking it all in so far, just fine. While she knows he still has a long way to go before he can learn how this world and just about everything in it works, this is still a good start.
Until Next Time ;)
