Chapter 27 - Tightly bound
When Kylo caught up to Rey, she had attempted to gain access to their room. As Kylo approached, he found Rey leaning against the wall, her arms firmly crossed over her chest, her expression a mix of determination and annoyance.
The scanner beside the door glowed ominously red, a silent barrier to her entry. With a confident stride, Kylo stepped forward, pressing his palm against the sleek surface of the scanner. The light shifted to green, granting them entrance.
Without exchanging a word, Rey stormed into the room, her frustration palpable. Once the door slid shut behind them, she huffed in irritation, tugging at the side zipper of her elegant dress, which threatened to tear the delicate fabric.
"Allow me," Kylo said with a gentle yet confident tone, stepping forward to carefully unzip the side of Rey's dress.
The delicate fabric pooled at her feet, cascading like a waterfall, and Rey swiftly kicked it away.
"Since when can't I get into our room?" Rey grunted, furrowing her brow as she crossed her arms.
Kylo met her gaze, unflinching. "We haven't input your biometrics into the system yet," he explained, his voice steady.
Rey tilted her head, confusion flickering in her eyes. "How did I get around the ship before?" she asked, pointing out the absurdity of the situation. "Normally, I just walk up to a door, and it opens for me."
"We have personnel continuously monitoring the cameras, and they can open the corridors for us without needing to input our metrics, especially if our arrival has been announced," Kylo explained, his voice steady and reassuring. "Currently, only I have the authority to access our room or droids by request, but I'll ensure that you're included in that access before you leave."
As he spoke, Kylo noticed Rey shiver slightly, her thinly clad form revealing just how exposed she was standing before him. She instinctively hugged herself for warmth, a look of vulnerability crossing her face.
"Come on, sweetheart," he said gently, his tone softening more as he took a step closer. "How about we get you settled into a warm bath? It might help you relax and unwind a bit before you head back home."
Rey was half-lost in thought, nodding absently as Kylo gently led her into the bathroom. Her gaze swept over the new triangular-shaped spa bath nestled in the corner of the lavish refresher. The bath was impressively spacious, large enough to comfortably accommodate both her and Kylo.
Kylo wrapped a soft, dark grey towel dressing gown around her, its fabric plush against her skin, and expertly tied it around her waist, securing her in its comfort. She responded with a small, appreciative smile, a flicker of warmth igniting in her chest.
As he turned back to the bath, Kylo's focused demeanor shifted into rhythmic movements. He adjusted the dual tap handles; the gentle sound of water rushing from the faucet echoed in the serene space. A moment later, he tipped a solution into the steaming stream, and instantly, the surface of the water erupted into a cascade of frothy bubbles, swirling and dancing in the illuminated bathtub.
Once satisfied with the settings, Kylo turned back to Rey and pulled her into a warm embrace. They stood together in a comfortable silence, watching the bath fill. Bubbles rose, accompanied by the soothing sounds of water and the tantalising scent of the fragrant solution.
Kylo leaned down and turned off the taps when it reached a sufficient level. Rey stripped off and climbed into the bath, lowering herself into the water and sighing in deep satisfaction, feeling the day's tension melt away.
"Feeling better?" Kylo inquired, his voice low and attentive.
"Yes, much," Rey replied, a warm smile spreading across her face. She sank back into embrace of the pillow in the corner, its fabric soft against her skin, and let her eyes flutter shut, savouring the moment's tranquility.
"Can I get you anything else?" Kylo asked, his genuine concern palpable in the air as he studied her relaxed expression.
Rey slowly opened her eyes. She turned her head toward Kylo, a quizzical expression on her face. "Aren't you going to get in the bath?" she asked.
Kylo paused for a moment. "I'd rather take care of you first," he said, a thoughtful look crossing his features as a new idea began to form in his mind. "How about I get you a nice cup of tea?"
Rey raised her eyebrows, intrigued yet slightly confused. "Tea?" she echoed, wondering what he meant.
Kylo let out a soft chuckle, the sound filling the quiet space between them. "Yes, tea. It's a comforting drink made by steeping tea leaves in hot water. Some people like to add milk, sugar, or even honey to enhance the flavour." His eyes sparkled as he spoke, clearly enjoying the idea of sharing this moment with her.
Leaning slightly closer, Rey tilted her head. "How do you usually have it?" she asked, genuinely curious about his preferences.
He sighed, a hint of nostalgia creeping into his voice. "Honestly, I haven't had tea in a long time, but when I was a child, I would drink Deychin tea with honey. My mother always said it was full of health benefits and a soothing drink that could help you relax after a long day."
Rey nodded thoughtfully, a smile forming on her lips. "I would love some tea then. It sounds perfect," she said, enjoying the idea of sharing this simple pleasure with him.
Kylo flashed a comfortable smile as he turned on his heel and walked out of their bathroom, his figure gradually disappearing from sight. Rey listened carefully, catching snippets of his commanding voice as he barked an order in the adjoining room, requesting a fresh First Order uniform in her size.
It wasn't long before, Kylo reappeared, balancing a carefully arranged tray in his hands. The tray featured a charming little teapot, resting above a small candle that flickered gently, casting warm shadows around the base. Alongside the teapot, an assortment of biscuits lay invitingly, with various shapes and textures.
With practiced grace, Kylo set the tray down on a marble bench next to the bath. He poured the steaming tea into a delicate cup, the fragrant aroma wafting through the air, and then added a generous spoonful of honey, stirring it in until it dissolved completely.
He then gently passed the steaming cup to Rey, their fingers brushing briefly. Rey lifted the cup to her lips, taking a cautious sip. The sweet, floral taste enveloped her senses, and she felt the soothing warmth of the tea spread through her body, deepening her sense of relaxation.
Savouring the moment, Rey let out a pleased hum, a smile blooming on her face as she enjoyed the comforting drink and the thoughtful gesture.
Kylo could sense the familiar waves of sadness and self-doubt washing over Rey once again, and he felt compelled to address it.
"You know," he began softly, "you don't have to pretend to be a cold and unfeeling Empress. It's perfectly okay to feel regret and even wrestle with doubts about having someone executed. After all, you are human, just like everyone else."
Rey looked away, her brow furrowing as she grumbled, "Am I that transparent?"
Kylo nodded, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly. "You can't hide from me, Rey. I've seen the way you struggle with these decisions. I don't need you to be cold and calculating—I just need you to be yourself."
She bit her lip, contemplating his words, and then asked, "But what about the rest of the First Order, or even the people we rule? Won't they view that as a sign of weakness? They expect strength from us."
Kylo let out a soft snort of disdain. "I can play the part of the big, tough, and terrifying leader for both of us."
Rey nodded thoughtfully, absorbing Kylo's words.
Kylo continued, his tone earnest. "You can be the voice of reason for me, the one who reminds me when I'm straying too far from who I want to be. You can pull me back into line."
Rey felt a wave of comfort wash over her at his assertion.
"You have the potential to be the Empress with a heart," Kylo elaborated, his gaze steady. "You can represent the softer side of our organization. When you're ready to reveal your true identity, you'll be amazing."
Rey considered his words, a frown creasing her brow. "That could happen sooner than we think if the Resistance keeps targeting you. Honestly, I can't promise I can keep my emotions in check under that kind of pressure."
Kylo responded with a light, assuring laugh. "Let's not rush it; we can take everything one step at a time. For now, how are you feeling?"
Rey took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her tension. "I'm still a little tense," she admitted, her voice shaking slightly as the emotional strain became clearer to her.
Kylo nodded in understanding. He began to remove his outer garments. "Shift forward a bit," he instructed gently.
Rey complied, cautiously inching forward. This allowed Kylo to lower himself into the water behind her. Once settled, she leaned back against him, feeling the warmth of his body.
With careful hands, Kylo began to massage her neck, working through the knotted muscles with skillful pressure. He moved down to her shoulders, then to her upper back, and finally along her arms, easing the tension and creating a soothing rhythm that began to melt her worries away.
Rey moaned at the relief she was feeling from the tightened muscles slowly kneading. Kylo continued to massage her hands, applying gentle pressure as he expertly worked out the tension from her fingers. As Rey leaned forward slightly, he moved his hands beneath the warm, bubbling water to her lower back, feeling the knots of tightness. He gently squeezed her thighs, the water adding a soothing quality to his touch.
"I'll need you to turn around so I can reach your lower legs and feet," Kylo instructed, calm and purposeful.
With a soft nod, Rey shifted to the other corner of the tub, extending each leg toward him. The warm water enveloped her, and she felt a sense of relaxation. Kylo focused on her legs, carefully kneading the muscles as he worked his way down to her feet. After finishing with her second foot, he gently placed it on the smooth bath surface.
"How are you feeling now?" he asked, concerned yet hopeful.
Rey smiled, her eyes still closed as she savoured the sensation of relaxation. "Much better," she said, her voice a warm whisper. "I could almost fall asleep." The peaceful atmosphere wrapped around her like a soft blanket, and she sighed, contented.
"Good," Kylo replied with a smirk, his eyes glinting playfully. "Biscuit?"
Rey let out a small snort of amusement. "I'm still full from dinner," she replied, patting her stomach.
Kylo grinned, taking a generous bite out of a chocolate-covered biscuit, the sweet treat crumbling slightly in his hand. "More for me then," he said, relishing the rich flavor as he chewed.
Rey couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiasm. After a brief pause, she sighed dramatically, giving in to temptation. "Fine, I'll just try one," she said, reaching for a biscuit with a playful roll of her eyes.
Once they finished their tea and biscuits, the warmth of the bathwater began to cool, prompting them to finally drag themselves out.
Rey groaned softly as she reluctantly stood up, the chill of the air making her shiver slightly. "Part of me doesn't want to go back," she admitted, wrapping the soft dressing gown securely around herself for warmth.
"I know," Kylo replied, understanding the sentiment. He mirrored her actions, tying his own robe around his waist and enveloping her in his arms. It was a small gesture, but one filled with reassurance.
Together, they made their way back to their bedroom. As they entered, Rey's gaze fell on the uniform laid out neatly on their bed, crisp and polished, alongside a couple of fresh undergarments that had been set aside. The sight reminded her of the responsibilities that awaited her, contrasting sharply with the cozy intimacy she had just enjoyed.
She groaned softly. "You go back to the Resistance, and I'll stay here."
Kylo chuckled, a hint of amusement in his dark eyes. "I think they might notice if I suddenly appeared in your place. It wouldn't exactly go unnoticed."
Rey tilted her head, her mind racing with possibilities. "You could mind trick them into thinking you're me," she suggested, a spark of hope in her expression.
Kylo shook his head gently, a teasing smile on his lips. "There are too many people to trick all at once. I may possess some impressive skills, but even I have my limits."
Rey pouted, her brows furrowing in disappointment, but Kylo couldn't help but laugh at her cute expression. He leaned down, pressing his lips against hers in a sweet, lingering kiss. "You look absolutely adorable when you do that," he said, his voice filled with warmth.
Rey smirked playfully, her previous frustration forgotten for the moment. "Well, thank you," she replied, her spirits lifted. She turned away and began to change into her clothing, a soft rustle of fabric accompanying her movements. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Kylo pulling on a fresh tunic and pants.
"Aren't you meant to be getting ready for bed?" Rey asked, arching an eyebrow as she glanced back at him.
Kylo shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I'd like to see you depart, and I'm certainly not going out there in my sleeping attire," he said, a playful smirk crossing his face.
He reached for the communicator lying on the small table beside him, his expression turning serious. "Send for Captain Parlux and JK-2187 to meet us in the hangar," he instructed with authority.
"Yes, my lord," came the swift reply.
After changing into their new attire, a sense of calm and anticipation filled the air as Kylo and Rey shared a tender kiss, a moment that seemed to suspend time. Kylo gazed down at Rey, who still rested comfortably in his embrace, the warmth of their connection palpable. "Are you ready?" he asked, his voice soft yet filled with determination.
Rey looked up at him, her eyes reflecting both resolve and a hint of uncertainty. "As ready as I'll ever be," she replied, her words steady despite the swirling emotions inside her.
With a subtle nod, Kylo gestured for the door to open. They stepped out together, moving in unison navigating the dimly lit corridors of the First Order ship.
Along the way, they encountered Hux, who was waiting for them in the stark, metallic hallway right before the hanger. He immediately bowed deeply in their direction. "My lord, my lady," he pronounced straightening up to face Rey. "Are you ready to depart?"
"Nearly," Kylo replied. "We just need Rey's biometrics to be added to the system."
Hux lifted the datapad in his hand, and began to input a series of commands. After a moment, he gestured towards a control panel mounted on the nearby wall. "You just need to place both hands on the scanner," he instructed.
Rey nodded, focusing on her task. She approached the scanner, placing her hands on its smooth surface. Almost immediately, she heard a series of electronic beeps, rhythmic and sharp, and watched as the datapad flashed a vibrant green—a signal of success.
"You'll also need this," Hux said, reaching into his pocket and producing a small silver disk. He held it out to her, a glimmer of light reflecting off its polished surface. "It's a data medallion. It will grant you access through any of our blockades and identify you to any of our ships. Consider it your key to safe passage."
Rey accepted the medallion. "Thank you," she replied.
Just then, JK-2187 and Captain Parlux appeared beside them, bowing respectfully. Rey acknowledged them both with a nod. "Let's go," she said, her voice steady.
As she turned to leave, Kylo offered a parting remark. "Good luck returning to the Resistance."
Rey met Kylo's gaze, her lips curling into a warm smile. "I'll be in touch soon," she promised, her voice filled with determination. She took a measured step forward, her heart racing with anticipation, before turning back to him one last time. "Where will the fleet head once I'm back on Naboo?"
Hux straightened, his demeanor formal and authoritative. "We will be moving to the Arkanis sector, my lady," he responded. "Specifically, we will be operating in the airspace above Geonosis."
Rey furrowed her brow, taken aback. "What business do we have there?" she inquired, curiosity lacing her tone.
Hux adjusted his posture, ready to share valuable information. "You may not be aware, but there were once extensive droid factories on that planet," he explained. "We are currently exploring our options regarding the potential recovery of those facilities."
Rey nodded thoughtfully, her mind racing at the possibilities. "Well, having more droids sounds like a far better strategy than increasing stormtrooper conscription," she remarked, her voice filled with conviction.
"Indeed, both avenues are options we are currently considering," Hux replied, maintaining his professional demeanor.
Rey nodded again and shared a brief but meaningful glance with Kylo.
Internally, Kylo whispered a heartfelt farewell, "Goodbye, sweetheart. Travel safe."
Rey's expression shifted, a smirk playing at the corners of her lips as she thought, "I'll see you very soon, my love."
With purpose, Rey gestured for Captain Parlux to lead the way to their transport. As they walked, JK-2187 fell into step next to her, the trooper's presence a comforting reminder of their alliance and shared mission. Together, they marched toward the trooper transport, each footstep echoing their determination.
Before long, JK and Rey were safely dropped off back on Naboo, their surroundings quickly changing as they boarded a sleek vessel, sailing across the river on their way back to Varykino Villa.
