"I'm gonna make a coffee, you want one?"
"No, I'm good. Don't forget, it reaches totality at—"
"At 11:58. I know." Danny chuckled, pulling the framed glass door closed behind him. He stopped to fiddle with the sliver of door next to it, pulling open one of the mesh wind slots, so he could still hear his wife and the musical streaming on the television.
He rounded the bar counter and pulled the coffee pot forward from its corner. He pressed the 'power' button, opening the cabinet with his other hand for his favorite mug. Danny paused, listening to the music filter through the mesh—Sam's soft muttering carrying it through on the light breeze. He smiled, and placed the stoneware, mountain-scape mug under the machines' spout. Flipping open the top, he pulled out the reusable pod and placed it next to his mug as a reminder to clean and refill, then popped a fresh, compostable k-cup into the slot. Danny shut the lid and pressed the ten-ounce button, wandering over to the open mesh, he smiled and watched Sam bounce in tune with the musical, singing along under her breath. She tensed and looked over, feeling his gaze; the girl smiled, still humming along, and Danny started dancing in place, bouncing back and forth in a goofy matter.
Sam laughed out loud, smacking a hand over her mouth and looking to their neighbors house to see if they'd come out and make another crack-shot complaint about noise pollution. Danny laughed, walking back into the kitchen for his coffee. He mixed in a spoonful of sugar, frothing the drink as he poured in a spot of dairy-free creamer and a drip of huckleberry syrup. He unplugged his phone and checked the time, turning the corner too fast, distracted— oh, don't want to miss it!
Splash!
Whoops.
Danny set the coffee cup on the bar top, and grabbed the kitchen towel next to it, rapidly wiping the floor. He scrunched the towel under his crouch to stand, tossing it back onto the granite and grabbed his coffee after pocketing his phone. Sam looked at him oddly as he rounded the bar, and he shrugged, shaking his head at his own commonplace clumsiness. He pushed the slot closed and opened the glass door, stepping out into the cold backyard. The motion light turned on with his entrance.
He looked up at the sliver of sky in between the patios' awning and the house's roof, catching sight of the nearly complete red moon.
"11:52, it's almost there."
"Yup. You sure you want to stay up with me? You can go to sleep if you want. I'm gonna be out here for over an hour."
"It's important to you, that makes it important to me. Come on," she patted the patio couch seat next to her. "Come keep me warm."
Danny grinned, and settled down next to her, sipping the steaming drink and slid under the blanket. He pulled her legs up over his lap and held her close.
"Thanks for staying up with me."
"Always."
The total eclipse reached its peak and they kissed, ever in love under the stunning lunar event.
Just a little thing for the total lunar eclipse. The freezing cold weather was totally worth shivering through in order to see the it in its entirety. The coffee I didn't spill was also, totally worth it.
