Long time. Sorry for the sudden absence. I was finishing up on dealing with insurance, and trying to write this chapter through was really difficult.
Anyway, enjoy.
{Land of Fire: Tanzaku village: open field}
August 27th
Line break.
Jiraiya sat against a tree as he contemplated his next move, all while trying to write the next chapter of his novel at the same time. Should he focus on the Sound ninja or Tsunade?
On one hand, the sound-nin are easy enough to deal with. However, anywhere Orochimaru's influence touches, disaster follows.
He needed to investigate the situation and see how deep the Snake Sannin's influence was. They only just got here, and there's no telling how long this Kabuto character has been trying to sink his claws into Tsunade.
Regardless of their true intentions, ensuring they can't get in the way is always best.
He flinched when he felt a wave of heat hit his face and covered himself using the book he had in hand.
When he looked up, he saw Naruto standing in the clearing, the last remnants of his flame jutsu dissipating into the air. His orange jacket was unzipped, and his forehead protector was resting loosely around his neck.
Naruto exhaled heavily, and for a moment, he simply stared at the charred remains of the targets he and Jiraiya had set up.
His clones lingered nearby, having finished their own stream of flames, some heaving over and others celebrating their achievement. Yet, the real Naruto remained impassive, staring at the results with a... Keen eye.
The boy ran a hand through his hair, letting out a long breath while feeling a mixture of satisfaction and frustration.
'He's progressing at a scary rate,' Jiraiya thought to himself. 'But, it seems Tsunade's words are weighing on him.'
Naruto began forming the initial seals for the jutsu, but his movements faltered. The chakra gathering in his chest dissipated as he hesitated, staring out at the burnt grass.
"You good?" Jiraiya called out, closing his book.
Naruto turned around and shrugged. "Yeah, I guess... If you couldn't tell, by the way, I've mastered this jutsu."
"Completed, not mastered. But the jutsu aside, what's on your mind?" Jiraiya asked as he stood up and made his way over to his student.
"I don't know how to counter her words," he whispered, shoving his hands in his pocket.
Jiraiya nodded and pushed off the tree, approaching him with his hands resting on his hips. "Tsunade's seen more than most, Naruto," he said gently. "She's lost more than most. Her bitterness… it doesn't come from apathy. It comes from pain."
Naruto scoffed and stuffed his hands in his pockets, lazily kicking a burnt patch of grass. In the background, his clone dispersed, no longer needed. "I don't wanna hear that."
Jiraiya snorted at that. "Well, it's the truth. If you'd have let me do the talking yesterday, you-"
Jiraiya stopped himself, realizing this was not the time for that. So, bit back his remark... And took another angle. "Listen. I know you don't wanna hear this, but it's true." Jiraiya looked up at the sky for a moment before speaking. "She's not a heartless woman, Naruto. She cares. She cares a lot. She doesn't think your dad was a fool, either. She's just… What's the word?... Disillusioned. When you've lived as long as she has, seen as much death as she has, it can change how you see the world."
Naruto pinched the bridge of his nose at this. "Is she right to feel this way?"
Jiraiya, in that moment, knew he had to tread carefully, and before he could craft an answer, Naruto continued.
"I never forgot the way those people treated me, y'know?" Naruto said before sighing. "No one cared about who I was until my name was revealed at the behest of the Daimyo. I never earned the respect of the people. My name carries weight, but it's the weight of my father, not me. The very man they disrespected by spurning his child," he said through gritted teeth. "I don't know how to convince her to return to a village as shallow as the Leaf. I don't have an answer."
Naruto's fists clenched as he started to pace now. "I can't help but be bitter. She pulled on something she knew I wouldn't have an answer for. Those people did spit on his legacy. They made it known I wasn't welcome every single day I was there before suddenly propping me up like their pampered prince."
The Sage was silent for a moment, processing his student's thought process before nodding in understanding. "You aren't wrong to feel this way. I will never fault you for feeling the way that you do. You are completely justified. But do not let her words bring you so low as to question your place. The people of Konoha can be shallow. True. But many hold genuine respect for what you did-"
"We. Taking down the One Tails was a team effort," Naruto said.
Jiraiya nodded. "Regardless, instead of wallowing in resentment, you've always taken the higher ground. Don't abandon your morals just because someone else is bitter over their own situation. Never."
"..."
Naruto remained silent for a moment, his gaze distant.
Jiraiya closed his eyes for a moment before smiling. "Naruto. C'mon. Take a seat with me," Jiraiya said, leading the way toward the tree and into the shade.
Naruto pouted but followed, dragging his feet. "I'm not tired. I'm just-"
"Oh, hush up and sit. You've let your mind run rampant. It needs... Something else aside from your little storm of negativity."
Naruto slumped onto the tree and crossed his arms, remaining silent. Jiraiya, on the other hand, smiled and craned his neck up to view the tree leaves, the sunlight bleeding in between the spaces.
"How about I tell you exactly why we've come to get Tsunade. It isn't as simple as you may think." Jiraiya said.
Naruto clenched his teeth but relented, leaning back beside Jiraiya and crossing his arms to listen.
Jiraiya got comfortable and sighed, thinking back and pulling out old memories. "Tsunade, for all her faults and difficulties, was one of Konoha's brightest. It's princess... Everyone called her that. She was spoiled rotten and had a temper unlike any woman I've ever met... Yet, she was someone with a bright passion that seemed to light up any room... She was the epitome of optimism, someone who wanted to do good in the world. She passed this down to her little brother as well, instilling the will of fire in him," Jiraiya said, knitting his brows together as he thought back.
"During the second war, she saw things that changed her outlook on the world, but that was... Also thanks to village propaganda. We were fighting for 'the greater good', but as we all discovered, it was just like any other series of wars... Just to ensure we were on top and no one else. Konoha is like any other village." Jiraiya said, sighing at the memory of Ame, and what they did to that poor country.
Naruto's eyes opened at the sigh, and he felt an uncomfortable feeling well up. Yet, he remained silent. This was history, a part of it he isn't likely to hear from his sensei again.
Naruto listened to Jiraiya's recount of events, and his eyes were opened to what it was he and his team went through. They all saw the war through a different lens and coped in their own way. Tsunade wanted an end to the war as soon as Nawaki died, yet Konoha's goal to maintain power made it impossible. After all, unlike in the other two wars fought, Konoha was one of the aggressors in this one in particular.
Nawaki's death made her openly question things from within, and Dan's death encouraged her to take more action than she ever had before. She changed many things in Konoha, creating the one healer per team rule that increased the survivability of their troops.
Upon her friend, Sakumo's passing, she hounded and lectured on the importance of no man left behind. It worked partially, yet Sakumo's name wasn't cleared. It was a breaking point.
"Each of us... coped in a different way, but she matured the fastest and sought to change things more openly than any of us." Jiraiya said as he finished his recounting, a few hours having passed by then.
"That all sounds... Brutal," Naruto whispered.
Jiraiya nodded but remained silent, letting the boy take it all in.
He watched Naruto rack his brain before a flare of something appeared in the boy's eyes. A light of understanding. "What is it?" The sage asked, his eyes narrowing as he observed his student's expression.
"She talks about all the bad the village has done and its flaws on top of that, and now I understand why. But you yourself helped topple one of the very things that was crippling the village, morally speaking... Right?" Naruto asked.
Jiraiya thought about it before nodding. "The elders had been a huge issue, but I didn't necessarily act alone... Why?"
"If you can go out of your way to make such a huge and monumental alteration for the sake of the village as a spymaster, then imagine what she can do as Hokage," he said, standing to his feet. "I don't have many arguments against what she is saying. But I can make her contribute by trying to change the village for the better."
Jiraiya smiled. "This was what I was aiming for yesterday... However, it seems you want to be the one to convince her."
Naruto nodded. "Yeah. I won't let her sit on her ass when there's work to do... And I did kinda fumble things when we got here."
Jiraiya laughed at this. "I'm all for it! You might as well clean up your mess, so go right on ahead!"
Naruto's brow twitched at the old man's laugh, but said nothing else otherwise.
Then, a sudden puff of smoke erupted beside them, and a toad appeared out of nowhere, slightly startling the two.
The small toad hopped onto Jiraiya's shoulder and whispered something in his ear, something that changed the man's mood in an instant.
Jiraiya stood, his expression growing serious. "I've got some business to take care of."
"Wha? Like what?" Naruto asked, tilting his head.
Jiraiya's grin turned wry. "Just a little reconnaissance. Don't overdo it while I'm gone, alright?"
Naruto nodded. He knew what this was about. Kabuto's location has likely been located. "Don't leave me in the dark."
Jiraiya chuckled. "Course not. Just focus on your homework. When I get back, we'll work on your Rasengan. There's untapped potential there."
With that, Jiraiya disappeared in a plume of smoke, leaving Naruto alone.
The blonde sighed and stood back up, stretching as he did so. 'Alright. Back to work.'
Line break.
{Land of Fire: Konohagakure: Hyuga compound: Branch family section}
The midday sun was casting a bright light across the Branch Family's compound, illuminating the courtyard as many of the branch family members practiced.
Neji Hyuuga sat under a tree, watching the training intently. His younger peers were doing well since it wasn't hot outside... Actually, it was cooler now, even with the sun. That meant no more whining about it being too hot.
As he watched the instructors line the kids up for their next lesson, tension suddenly filled the air, a tension Neji knew well.
Servants filed out of the way at the hall sitting in front of him, and an entourage of main family guards walked through as though they owned the place.
'Hinata.'
Neji stood up completely and his eyes narrowed. 'What is she doing here at a time like this?' He thought, deciding to trail behind the group.
He watched as the kids and instructors all bowed as they made their way by and did so himself, and as soon as they passed, he walked into the halls/long porch, and hid between the pillars, watching them move.
Line break.
Hinata moved through the compound halls with an air of quiet authority, her retainers flanking her with disciplined precision.
The stone pathways winding through the Branch Family's domain were well-kept, exiting one building to get to the next, but the distinct difference in grandeur compared to the Main Family estate was evident.
Though meticulously maintained, there was an undeniable air of subservience woven into the very architecture. The presence of onlookers, Branch members pausing in their daily routines to watch her pass, was a silent reminder of the gap between them. Some averted their gaze, while others lingered, their expressions unreadable.
She saw the meeting hall itself for the first time, and it was a modest but dignified structure adorned with simple yet elegant woodwork. Nothing too fancy, though.
The timing of this meeting was... Irregular, and the signs of hurried preparation were apparent. Servants were rushing to prepare tea, elders shifting restlessly in their seats, and Higashi himself pacing near the center of the modest room.
He was acting with uncharacteristic haste, and she almost smiled at the sight. But this kind of behavior warranted suspicion. She knew he was desperate, but this was strange.
She stepped into the room, and whispers immediately stirred among the elders. Their expressions shifted from mere curiosity to outright unease at the sight of her retainers.
One of the elders, a grizzled man with deep lines across his face, bristled.
"What is the meaning of this? You bring guards to a meeting meant to be private?"
Hinata did not break stride. Instead, she let a small smile curve her lips as she approached the center of the room. "Guards? No, these are simply those who are loyal to me and to my father. Given how insistent you were in summoning me, I thought it only appropriate to ensure I am among those I trust."
Behind her, the doors shut, her retainers sealing off the room for privacy and standing outside the doors to prevent eavesdropping.
Another elder scoffed, his hands curling into fists. "This is an insult! You come here with armed retainers, treating us as if we are enemies?"
Hinata's eyes flicked toward him, her expression unreadable. "Aren't you?"
A silence stretched through the hall at that. A few of the elders exchanged uneasy glances, suddenly aware that she had not come here to negotiate in good faith.
Higashi's face twitched slightly, and he raised a hand to calm the rising hostility and steady himself. "Let us not waste time. The reason we called you here is urgent."
Hinata clicked her tongue in mock disappointment. "Yeah, I can see that, given that I've spent the entire morning and afternoon being pestered, hounded, and all but dragged here like some wayward servant. " Her eyes narrowed with amusement, yet, there was also a dangerous and wary glint there as well. "It makes me wonder what has you scrambling like ants."
She settled herself into a seat and lounged in a relaxed position while the elders bristled at her words. "Well? I came all this way at your desperate insistence. Do try to make this worth my time."
The sound of a writing brush snapping was the only thing heard as a branch member's patience was lost in an instant, the old man glaring at her from across the room. 'Arrogant little bitch!' He thought with rage.
Higashi exhaled sharply but refrained from immediate comment. Instead, he gestured toward the gathered elders. "We are at a turning point. With the primary Main Family elders preoccupied, an opportunity presents itself to push back against Hiroshi's growing influence." His fingers drummed against the table, his anxiety on display. "You must see that he cannot be allowed to finalize his plans for the new seal."
Hinata tilted her head as if weighing his words with great care. "And yet, you wait until now to act. Had you been quicker in simply submitting-"
"I was weighing our options." Higashi cut in.
Hinata scoffed. "You were slow. You stalled, hoping to find another angle outside of serving me, and it has cost you."
Higashi's jaw tightened as she continued. "Was it not a fair deal? You would see me take a risk that could undo all my work in maintaining my current position. I would ensure you all don't become slaves in exchange for limited assistance in my own goals," Hinata mused, her gaze drifting over the assembled figures. "Convenient for you, but not for me if I get caught."
A few of the elders stiffened at her mocking tone, but she ignored their irritation. One of them, emboldened by frustration, snapped, "Enough games. We cannot allow Hiroshi to dictate the fate of our family. Will you help us or not?"
Hinata remained silent, and before the man could speak further, Higashi motioned for him to take a seat. "Hinata-sama. Hiroshi's ambitions will bring ruin to all of us, even you. He has already begun the groundwork for implementing his new seal. If we do not act now, we may not get another chance."
Hinata exhaled softly, her expression showing no urgency whatsoever. "What exactly is it you expect me to do?"
Higashi straightened, "Leverage your position as Hiashi's heir. Your retainers are loyal. Your presence commands respect amongst the elders, whether Hiroshi admits it or not. We need your backing to rally the undecided factions before Hiroshi consolidates absolute control in his council."
The Branch elders nodded in agreement, their gazes flicking between her and Higashi.
Hinata let the silence stretch before she finally spoke. "You believe the absence of the elders gives you an opening, but you forget that Hiroshi has a leash on me, too. Even if I involve myself, the odds of success are uncertain. And should we fail…"
Higashi's expression darkened. "You would rather let him tighten the noose?"
"I would rather ensure my position, which, as you know, took a long time to secure, isn't compromised." She responded.
Higashi's fists clenched, but he knew she was right. "Then what will it take?"
Hinata was silent for a moment before she leaned forward. "I already gave you a hint during our last meeting. I want complete access to the Branch Family's network. Your eyes, your informants, your influence. If I am to risk my position, I will not be doing so blindly and with no benefits."
Murmurs rippled through the elders, some in shock, others in anger. "You would make us your servants?" one growled.
Hinata arched an eyebrow. "Would you prefer to remain Hiroshi's slaves?"
Higashi hesitated before nodding reluctantly. "We will consider it."
Hinata scowled. "You won't be given another audience."
Higashi slammed the table at this. "Dammit, be reasonable!"
"With you? Never. Make your choice or make your peace," she said.
Higashi's expression darkened as he clenched and unclenched his fists. He never thought he would be brought any lower, and by his rival's progeny at that... By her. "You are just like him."
She leaned forward at that, her eyes darkening. "You should hope so. He won't see me coming because of it. Now. Choose."
The elders all looked at one another, and Higashi pinched the bridge of his nose. There weren't a lot of options. They needed someone from the inside who had the influence to do something, and all the others refused.
Line break.
[Neji POV]
Neji waited to see what would come of this unusual visit. He remembered the words she relayed to him days prior. A meeting that would no doubt occur. If what she was spouting was true, then this wasn't some visit. This was serious.
His Byakugan narrowed as he tried to read the body language of those inside, but aside from the elders' erratic and uneasy stances and shifting, he couldn't tell what was truly happening.
'What is going on in there?'
The heiress eventually stood and bowed, her silhouette shifting to his natural vision as he deactivated his ocular power, watching her step out of the room with her retainers and the guards guarding the entrance before they began making their way down the hall and out of the branch compound.
Neji steeled himself and made his way to see the elders, all of them exuding exhaustion.
"Uncle. What was the nature of that visit?" Neji asked.
Higashi's face immediately turned stern. "Nothing for you to worry about, Neji. I'll tell you when it is said and done. Leave us immediately."
Neji's lips thinned as he read the room. Something went down, and they won't share with him.
"Do I not have a right to know?" He asked.
Higashi frowned at this and stood, slowly walking over to Neji and placing a hand on his shoulder, a smile on his face. "Neji, what you need to focus on is recovery. Nothing more. Have you been attending your physical therapy?"
Naji's brow twitched and he shut the door, already fed up. He wasn't being taken seriously. It's been like this since his injury. Coddled or looked down on, he isn't as important to them now. Not as he is.
Even so, he didn't need an answer. Hinata spoke true. It's the only plausible reason for their demeanor, their haste.
'We are about to be enslaved...' Neji thought, a shiver running down his spine.
Line break.
{Land of Fire: Tanzaku village}
[4 hours later]
Naruto stood in the scorched clearing, his chest rising and falling as he caught his breath. The remains of his training surrounded him: singed patches of grass, trails of smoke curling into the air, and scattered impressions where his clones had fallen.
Crossing his arms, Naruto stood silently, his mind racing as he pondered other uses for the Flame Bullet Jutsu. He was pretty much done now. He had the jutsu down 100%. He can now use fire jutsu, and it felt good. It seems to come naturally, despite the lack of connection to the element, as wrong as that feels.
The blonde did a stretch before deciding it was time to work on something else. No rest for the wicked, after all. Not when there were things to do.
As he did, he paused at the feeling of someone coming onto the field, and upon inspection, he felt it was the woman who accompanied Lady Tsunade yesterday.
He sighed, not sure whether this was gonna go well.
He turned to see her coming onto the field, and his thoughts were confirmed. Shizune's expression was only a bit grim at first, but as she approached and saw him, her expression relaxed.
She glanced at the aftermath of Naruto's training before speaking. "Hello, Namikaeze-san-"
"Naruto is fine," Naruto said as he dusted himself off and offered a handshake, which she smiled and accepted.
"Ok, Naruto. I... We never had a proper introduction, so my name is Shizune. I'm Tsunade's apprentice and assistant," She said, offering a canteen of water.
Naruto took it with an acknowledging hum and dumped it over his head to cool off since he already hydrated himself earlier. The act caught her off guard at first, but she got over her surprise quickly.
He then gave a brief nod as she took back her canteen and dried his hair with his hands, brushing the locks back and letting the water fall. "What brings you here?"
She held up a small medical kit in one hand and gave a disarming smile. "Just to talk, and to offer some assistance."
Naruto smirked and crossed his arms. "I'll talk, but the medical stuff isn't necessary."
She looked at the burns and cuts on his hands, then gave him a deadpan expression, and he sighed.
"Fine. Talk while you're checking my injuries, but it isn't necessary. I heal fast."
Line break.
The two sat under the tree nearby as she rubbed some ointment on the boy's burns, and Naruto sighed at the sting of the cooling sensation. "I would've been fine." He said with a grumble.
She shook her head in disbelief and exasperated fondness. "I know. But this will make it heal faster."
She watched him lean back and knew what was going through his mind, so she quickly quelled his thoughts.
"She didn't send me or anything. I came here to apologize on her behalf."
The blonde raised an eyebrow. "That only works if she is actually-"
"She is sorry, I can assure you." She said. "She's just... Being stubborn. I wanted her to come and talk this out, but... She's being the way she's always been."
She took a breath before looking the boy in the eyes. "I feel like it's important... I just can't understand how... How she could just...-"
"How what?" Naruto asked, leaning forward. "How she could talk bad about the previous Kage? or-"
"No. I'm referring to her connection to you," She said while pinching the bridge of her nose. "I believe you two should meet and talk. It's important. Really important."
Naruto's brows furrowed in confusion and intrigue. This was both opportune and unexpected. He really thought he'd have to claw his way into having another audience with this lady, but this works just fine.
Shizune noticed his expression and placed a hand on his shoulder before speaking. "Tsunade can be very abrasive. I admit it. But, there's a side of her she shows to very few people, and that is what makes me so confident that the two of you will get along. She knew your father personally as they owed each other a great deal."
Naruto looked at Shizune with slight interest. "I caught onto that... Kinda... But she called him arrogant."
She nodded. "I know, but I can assure you, she's just bitter over his death. It came as a devastating shock to her when she heard, as she, like many, wholeheartedly believed he was someone destined to change the world for the better. She... She even visited Konoha during his reign to check up on him and your mother."
Naruto's attention was fully on her at that point, and he felt himself listening with a sense of understanding. "Wait... She was a family friend? Like Jiraiya-sensei?"
Shizune's lips quirked into a smile at the memory of her master's past antics, and she nodded. "Yes. Yes, she was. She just... She has the tendency to lash out when hurt, but just like you, there was someone who was adamant about her taking a more active role in Kooha."
Naruto leaned closer. "Really? Who?"
Shizune's eyes drifted to the sky as she thought back. "Your mother, of course. To Tsunade, she was like a beloved daughter-in-law... Or, that's how she put it. They were at each other's throats all the time whenever they were around each other... But there was so much respect there too... However, your mother and her got into it the last time she visited, and...-"
"And what?" He asked, leaning forward.
"Things were said. Things I think Tsunade needed to hear, yet she wasn't willing to listen. But, she was... Coming around..." Shizune sighed in frustration and gritted her teeth. "Things were going so right before the attack undid everything. All that progress... Gone."
Naruto sighed. "I want details."
"Only she can give you that," Shizune said.
He knew she was going to say that. Whatever was said between his parents and Tsunade was something he had to hear, as it brought insight on what their views were and how it affected Tsunade.
He nodded and stood to his feet. "Well, you win. Take me to her. I want answers, and she can give them to me."
Shizune's expression brightened, and she stood to full height, quickly packing up her things and taking him by the hand. "Absolutely! Right this way!" She said excitedly, almost dragging the boy along.
If anyone could bring back her former master, it was him.
Line break.
{Land of Fire: Tanzaku village: The streets of Tanzaku}
[Jiraiya POV]
The streets of Tanzaku were alive with their usual energy as Jiraiya moved through the shadows, his senses on high alert. The scent of freshly cooked food and the distant hum of chatter filled the air, but Jiraiya's focus was elsewhere... In spite of his stomach speaking to him rather loudly.
He had been following his toad to where it claims his target resides, and indeed, the tip was valid.
The toad paused at the edge of an alley, its eyes narrowing as it spotted a rundown building nestled between two larger, more well-kept structures. The building's exterior was unremarkable, but the faint flicker of chakra emanating from within told a different story.
Jiraiya's lips curled into a grim smile as he acknowledged the toad's efforts and nodded. "Good work. I'll be sure to reward you when this is done."
The toad saluted, and in a puff of smoke, it was gone.
Jiraiya let out a breath before moving closer, his steps silent. From his vantage point on the roof of a neighboring building, Jiraiya peered into a cracked window.
Inside, Kabuto stood near a makeshift table covered in a large hand-drawn map and a few scrolls. The Sound Four were scattered around the room. Kidomaru was leaning against a corner with a smirk, Jirobo sat cross-legged near the door, Sakon and Ukon were whispering quietly to each other while perched on top of some crates, and Tayuya idly tuned her flute, sitting on the corner of the table, close to Kabuto.
Across from Kabuto stood Guren, her arms crossed as she leaned against the wall, her eyes fixed on Kabuto as he explained something to the group.
Jiraiya scowled and stepped away, hopping onto the building he was just on. They are obviously Orochimaru's henchmen. He needed something safer. So, with a hand sign, he summoned a tiny toad and leaned in. "Hey, little guy. I'm gonna need to borrow you for a sec."
Line break.
"A setback. That is all that this is," Kabuto said, his voice low but laced with frustration. He ran a hand through his silver hair, his usual composure slipping. "Jiraiya and the boy are a problem, but not one that can't be maneuvered around."
"Maneuver? How?" Guren said, leaning off the wall with a skeptical look. "He's a Sannin. Our master's greatest thorn. How do we deal with two of the Sannin?!"
Kabuto, gritting his teeth, glanced up from the table. "We stay focused. They don't know we're here, so, we keep it that way. We need to know what those two are here for, and fast. The conflict we've set up in her is about to be challenged at a time where we can't afford for any of our plans to go wrong. I can't move until I have an idea of their objective and how much of our plan is compromised. That means reconnaissance and planning. We adapt."
Guren's eyes narrowed as she leaned on the table. "So, we wait more? More skulking around in the shadows while our master suffers?"
"No," Kabuto said. "We move. No waiting, only preparation. We consider Jiraiya's position, but with him here, we need to consider plan A a potential lost cause and refine our plan B."
In the distance and in a tiny crevice between two crates, the toad listened closely, Jiraiya within the creature.
"So, we're going after the little assistant?" Sakon chimed in.
Kabuto nodded. "When the time is right, yes. However, this assistant is still a capable shinobi, so capturing her won't be too easy without preparation. Luckily, we only need her alive, not intact."
The Sound 4 all perked up at this, sinister grins appearing on their features, especially Kidomaru.
Kidomaru chuckled. "Sounds good to me. What do you have in mind?"
Kabuto smirked. "You and the boys are gonna be working very closely this time. The four of you are going to scope out the hotel she is staying in and find places to plant traps and inconveniences to ensure you control the battlefield. You won't plant them until we know what day is best to act."
Jiraiya, disguised within the toad, couldn't help but chuckle internally. This was going to be VERY interesting. He was going to eat this up.
Line break.
{Land of Fire: Tanzaku village:}
[Naruto POV]
Tsunade sat at a corner table in a lavish gambling hall, a half-finished sake cup resting beside a scattering of betting slips.
The place reeked of alcohol, desperation, and poorly spent fortunes. She had little interest in the game tonight, so, her mind drifted elsewhere, lingering on memories she hadn't confronted in years. Shizune was out handling errands, leaving her momentarily alone.
Or so she thought.
"Tsunade-sama, I brought someone to see you."
Tsunade turned, blinking as Shizune stepped aside to reveal Naruto Uzumaki standing beside her.
For a moment, Tsunade said nothing. She stared, her breath hitching as she took in the boy before her. He stood there, resolute, carrying a familiar presence for a fleeting second. It was as if time had folded in on itself. A pang of something deep and painful twisted in her chest, and she frowned.
"You…" Her voice wavered before she regained herself, forcing a chuckle. "You really don't know when to quit."
Naruto smiled, offering a small bow. "It's good to see you again, Lady Tsunade."
She sighed, shaking her head. "Shizune, really? Why the hell would you bring him here?" she said, her voice holding a note of irritation.
Shizune smiled apologetically. "I thought you might appreciate the company."
Tsunade scowled at the younger woman before studying Naruto again, taking in the way he carried himself. There was none of the blustering impatience she had half-expected upon seeing him again.
Naruto took a step forward. "I know you left it behind, and I understand why, but the village still needs you."
Tsunade scoffed, swirling her sake lazily. "Konoha has a habit of 'needing' people right up until it doesn't and discards them. I know how the story goes. And it's the same every damn time."
Naruto's expression hardened, but after a moment, he exhaled. "I won't pretend Konoha hasn't done terrible things. I know better than anyone how ugly it can be. People can be ignorant. They can be cruel. But not everyone is like that." He met her gaze. "If we want a better future, the answer isn't to resent the ones who were wrong before us. It's to educate the next generation and change things at the root."
Tsunade's eyes flicked to him. "Konoha isn't just some misguided child you can nurture into something better. It's a system built on traditions older than either of us, upheld by people who would rather cling to their power than admit their mistakes. I have no interest in leading a village that refuses to change, a village I can't even respect."
Naruto didn't flinch. "It CAN change. Minato-... My father wasn't someone who just accepted the status quo. He saw Konoha for what it was, and instead of turning away, he tried to make it better. I don't know much about the Second Hokage, but I know of the First Hokage's ideals. He wanted peace, something that was out of reach in his time. And Hiruzen… maybe he was too afraid to undo what came before him, afraid to change a system he thought was working. But my dad? He wasn't afraid. He was willing to take that risk, to push Konoha forward instead of letting it stagnate. That's the kind of Hokage I believe in."
Tsunade's grip on her cup tightened. "It isn't that simple, brat. You talk about pushing Konoha forward, but you don't know what that really means. You don't understand its problems, not truly. Only the surface. Tobirama didn't build the village to be changed easily, he built it to survive, no matter the cost. He created the institutions that still run everything today, the same ones Minato barely had time to scratch the surface of. And Hiruzen? He wasn't afraid of change. He was afraid of what undoing Tobirama's work. He spent decades trying to hold everything together, knowing that shifting one piece could bring the whole system crashing down.
You think Minato could have done what even they couldn't? That I can? Being Hokage isn't about ideals, it's about knowing what battles are even possible to win. And the one you're asking for? It's already lost."
She leaned forward, eyes narrowing. "You push so hard for me to take the seat, but I wonder…if you were in my shoes, would you take it yourself? Do you really see the village for what it really is? Dangerous? Ungrateful?"
Naruto fell silent for a long moment, and Tsunade took a slow sip of her drink, letting her words settle.
He gritted his teeth at her words. He thought he had her there, but this wasn't just resentment. She had thought long and hard about this, far longer than he had. How was he supposed to come up with a counter when the truth is... He wouldn't take the position. He doesn't want to be Hokage.
Tsunade's golden eyes flicked to him, searching. "I can see it in your eyes, Naruto. Even you wouldn't be able to take that seat, not truly. You wouldn't be willing to sacrifice yourself for a village that betrayed your parents so thoroughly. Betrayed you. Not when you know they would want you to live a better life."
She leaned back, her voice softer but no less firm. "If you were my child, I wouldn't let you be Hokage either. Not for those people."
Naruto didn't dwell on the strange feeling those words stirred in him. Instead, he squared his shoulders. "I think you're giving up too easily."
Tsunade's fingers clenched around her cup. "Giving up?" Her grip tightened, and with a sharp crack, the glass shattered in her hand.
Naruto pressed on. "You're more capable than most who came before you. You didn't just follow the system, you changed it. You revolutionized the way Konoha fights. One healer per squad? That was you. A medical corps, the higher-ups dismissed as a waste of money? You proved them wrong. The no man left behind policy? You crafted that with your own pen after Sakumo. You've already changed the village in ways other candidates could only dream of. If things are bad, you have the power to make them better."
Tsunade's jaw clenched. "No. I am not the answer you're looking for. Stop trying to twist me into something I'm not."
Naruto shook his head. "You've already made great changes to Konoha. That's why Jiraiya and I believe in you-"
Tsunade slammed her hand onto the table. "Dammit, Kushi- Naruto!"
She caught herself too late, groaning and burying her face into her hands.
Naruto blinked, then smirked. "Did you just-"
"Don't! You and that optimism, I swear, you are just like her." Tsunade exhaled, rubbing her temple.
She let out a short laugh after calming down and shook her head. "Must be the Uzumaki blood. Hotheadedness is practically a family trait."
Naruto smirked. "Good thing I know how to control myself."
Tsunade arched a brow before scoffing. "Sure you do. Not according to last time, little hypocrite."
Naruto tried to glare, but Tsunade only saw Minato's pout and Kushina's defiant gaze staring back at her. Her expression softened before she reached out, ruffling his hair. "Harmless little runt."
Naruto scowled, trying to brush her hand away. "Oy. Quit it. I'm not a kid."
Tsunade smirked, keeping her hand firmly on his head. "You're still a kid to me, brat."
Tsunade finally released Naruto from her grip, rolling her eyes as she caught sight of Shizune's expression. The woman was practically glowing with excitement, hands clasped together in barely contained glee.
"Stop looking at me like that, Shizune."
Shizune ignored the protest with a smile. "Do either of you want something to eat? Or maybe we should move somewhere more comfortable?"
Naruto, still fixing his hair with a grumble, glanced down at the menu in front of Tsunade. "Some fish sounds good."
Tsunade exhaled, glancing at Shizune. "Fine, just order something decent."
As they waited, her gaze drifted downward. A long pause stretched between them before she finally spoke. "Naruto… I said some awful things about your father." Her fingers traced the rim of her other wine cup before she exhaled. "I called him arrogant. I dismissed his ideals, and I dismissed you."
Naruto studied her, his usual energy subdued. "You were angry."
Tsunade scoffed. "Maybe. But that doesn't mean I was right." She glanced at him, eyes heavy with something unreadable. "Minato... he believed he could change the world. Jiraiya and I were the ones who put that idea in his head, just like with my little brother. And in the end-" She cut herself off, shaking her head. "Maybe I was just trying to convince myself it wasn't my fault. I just don't believe in that dream anymore."
Naruto's expression didn't waver. "It wasn't your fault. And those ideals you once had weren't wrong, either. Minato made his own choices, just like I will."
She looked at him with slight surprise as he stared at the menu.
"You were right about me," He said suddenly, "I didn't care for becoming Hokage, and still don't. I did at first, but that dream seemed out of reach. Then, when they cheered for me in the exams... I dunno. I felt weird... And not in a good way... It went from being out of reach to being a possibility, but for reasons I couldn't stand. I didn't even have time to process anything with everything that was going on."
She leaned forward and listened as he rubbed his temple. "I couldn't accept that it was the shadow of my father they were cheering, and not me. Even now, those who respect me now... The adults, I mean. They see him, not me."
She nodded. "And now?"
Naruto looked up and his eyes showed conviction. "I don't know how to feel about my father. In my mind, he threw me to the wolves for a village that he wasn't aware would eat me alive. But... He meant well... I think. I'm not over it, but there is more to it. I respect his dream. I see it. I'm not going to turn away from it. Conversing and... Debating with you... It helped me confront things about my future. About what I want... And I want to try and fit as much of those ideals into Konoha as possible, so that no one has to suffer needlessly due to Konoha's neglect."
She nodded and leaned back. It was a solid answer... One she wouldn't have come up with at his age. She could see he held resentment as much as she did... And more so now... He was hurting. He lost people like her.
He paused, then tilted his head slightly. "By the way, how well did you know my parents?"
Tsunade was caught off guard by the question for a moment, but she recovered with a short, breathy laugh. "Those brats? I knew them very well."
She noticed the flicker of interest in Naruto's eyes, the way he leaned in slightly at her words. She sighed, shaking her head, but indulged him anyway. "Minato spent his early childhood in the Senju clan."
Naruto's eyes widened. "Wait, what?"
She nodded. "Yeah. He was like an honorary member for a time."
Naruto's head spun at this. "W-Woah... Why would the Senju take him in?"
Tsunade hesitated, debating whether to tell him. It wasn't her place... But, Jiraiya doesn't even know this, as Minato never talked to anyone about this bit save for her.
Finally, she exhaled, deciding he deserved the truth. "Because they owed his mother a debt. A very large one... One of our own... Wronged her in the worst possible way. Your father was the result of that."
Naruto's breath caught, his hands curling into fists. "Are you saying-"
Tsunade met his gaze evenly. "Yes. Your father was born through... Unfortunate means. His mother was a victim, and when she died, the clan took him in as compensation. That's how I knew him."
Naruto's eyes were wide with shock at this. He pinched the bridge of his nose, understanding the enormity of this. "W-Wait! Wait... Wait a second. Did-"
"Yes, Naruto. He knew, but he didn't want anyone knowing. Only me, Lord Third, and Kushina knew. Your father was part Senju," She said with closed eyes.
"S-So... I'm... Part Senju?" He whispered.
Tsunade nodded. "25% Senju, yeah."
Naruto leaned forward, his brows knitted. "Tell me more."

{Land of grass: Orochimaru's bunker}
The air was thick with the sterile sting of antiseptics and the underlying rot of dying flesh. Orochimaru's body convulsed violently, his nerves firing in disjointed agony as his broken form lay sprawled on the medical table. His breath came in ragged, strained gasps, each inhalation igniting white-hot pain that shot through his useless limbs. The doctors, meager civilian vermin, scrambled around him, their trembling hands barely competent enough to administer the crude palliative measures keeping him from succumbing to systemic failure.
"His vitals are crashing!" one of the younger physicians cried out, his hands shaking as he fumbled with the tubing feeding fluids into Orochimaru's failing body. "His temperature is plummeting! Circulation is shutting down fast!"
Another physician, panic thick in his voice, pressed a trembling hand to Orochimaru's wrist, recoiling slightly at the sight of the dark, necrotic tissue spreading over his limbs. "His pulse is erratic! It's barely there! His heart rate is spiking—if we don't act now, he's going into full collapse!"
"If you don't intervene now, you will all die screaming," Orochimaru rasped, his voice a withered husk of what it once was. Even now, in the grip of agony, the mere weight of his killing intent sent tremors through the room. The doctors stiffened, fear driving them into further motion.
"His autonomic functions are out of control! We need a sedative, something, anything to stop his body from shutting down!" one of the doctors shouted, his voice rising in panic.
"No!" another interrupted, practically gasping. "His chakra is going wild! If we dampen it too much, he might crash completely!"
Orochimaru's vision wavered, his golden eyes flaring with barely contained wrath, masking the sheer terror clawing at his mind. His body was failing faster than he had calculated, and despite his years of preparation, panic gnawed at the edges of his thoughts. He couldn't afford to die like this—not now, not when everything was unraveling before him. But he wouldn't let anyone see his fear. Never.
Pain lanced through his spine, an electric agony that sent his vision spiraling into darkness for a fraction of a second before he was jolted back by the sting of epinephrine forced into his system. The doctors had barely managed to stabilize him, their frantic hands pressing down on his chest, shoving more fluids into his veins, muttering half-panicked reassurances that meant nothing. One had even attempted to brace their body as it convulsed, their knuckles turning white from the effort. One of the doctors stumbled back, nearly knocking over the tray of medical instruments.
The silence was suffocating. The doctors stood frozen, their breath held, waiting to see if their efforts had been enough. Orochimaru's chest rose and fell in shallow, uneven breaths, the fire in his nerves simmering down to a relentless, pulsing throb. His golden eyes flickered open, hazy with lingering agony, but the sharp edge of rage remained.
"Crude," Orochimaru spat, chest heaving as the pain dulled slightly, leaving behind a nauseating, burning throb in his gut. The room had fallen into a tense stillness after that, and the doctors were frozen in place.
He exhaled shakily, his fingers twitching instinctively, though they remained useless. "You... are all crude," he growled, his voice quieter now but no less venomous. "Kabuto's absence reduces me to this! to relying on… amateurs!" His breath hitched in barely contained fury, his golden eyes narrowing and wandering as his mind spiraled deeper into frustration.
"That fool should have been back by now. Useless! I warned you—warned all of you—that my chakra was too potent for your pathetic, textbook methods! None of you have the comprehension to handle the complexities of cellular degradation when intertwined with a fluctuating chakra network. Did I not explain how the balance of mutagenic catalysts and energy synthesis had to be maintained? Would introducing even the slightest miscalculation in the alchemical infusion accelerate necrosis? And yet here I am, rotting away like some common wretch, subjected to the fumbling hands of fools who barely understand basic regenerative theory!"
His breath was ragged, his body trembling as his anger burned hotter than the pain. "And Kabuto! He should have anticipated this—should have foreseen what your incompetence would lead to! If I had my hands..." His fingers twitched uselessly as he seethed, his hatred the only thing keeping him conscious. "I would skin each and every one of you for your failure."
The head physician swallowed thickly. "W-We... we're doing what we can, but regeneration on this scale i-is impossible. The necrosis is spreading faster than anything we've seen, and medical ninjutsu can only slow it down, not reverse it. We warned you that your body's natural chakra pathways would resist intervention!"
Orochimaru's lips peeled back in something that might have been a grin, had it not been warped by rage and pain. "Then you are useless to me. You should have known. I told you that my body does not abide conventional treatment! My cellular structure demands a synthesis of precise alchemical compounds and controlled chakra application. Brute-force medical techniques would agitate the decay rather than mend it, you idiots. My own cells are being attacked! My tissue breaking down faster than even I anticipated! and yet you stand there, bewildered, as though this is new information! I laid the path for you, gave you the answers, and you still fail me!"
The doctors flinched, some glancing at each other helplessly. "We don't have that kind of knowledge, Lord Orochimaru. We-"
Orochimaru let his chakra pulse outward, a vile, sickening pressure that sent the physicians to their knees, gasping for air as though the room itself had been deprived of oxygen. The overhead surgical lights flickered. A metal tray clattered to the floor.
The lead physician coughed violently, trying to regain his composure. "T-The only thing we can do is keep the pain manageable. We followed your instructions, we applied the alchemicals as you described, but your chakra... it turned against you. Instead of reinforcing your cells, it devoured them, accelerating the necrosis."
Orochimaru's expression twitched.
Self-cannibalization.
His own chakra was becoming his enemy, devouring him before he could prepare for a proper transfer. His breath hitched as the full weight of the failure settled upon him, and a guttural growl escaped his lips. "Damn it! Damn it!" he snarled, his voice raw with agony and rage.
'Had he been here, had he not abandoned me to these fools, he would have corrected this! Adjusted the balance, mitigated the reaction, he would have seen what I overlooked!' His useless fingers twitched against the bedding as fury clouded his vision.
He needed more time. Kabuto was supposed to be here. Tsunade was supposed to be found by now. He was not meant to suffer like this, not meant to decay this fast.
The doctors scrambled back to their feet as his chakra withdrew, hurriedly adjusting his IV flow to include a suppressant, anything to slow the aggressive decay eating him alive. Orochimaru barely paid them any mind. His mind was a storm, a seething inferno of hatred toward Hiruzen, toward Konoha, toward Kabuto for taking so damn long, and most of all, hatred toward the Shinigami.

{Land of Fire: Tanzaku village: The streets of Tanzaku}
The streets of Tanzaku bustled with life, but for once, Tsunade wasn't focused on the distractions of the city. She sat at a small outdoor table, her gaze drifting to Naruto and Shizune as they chatted. Naruto, ever the ball of energy, was tearing through a skewer of dango while Shizune attempted to keep up with his endless questions. The scene was disarmingly familiar, Kushina's animated expressions, Minato's unwavering curiosity. It tugged at something deep inside Tsunade, a quiet ache nostalgia.
"You eat like you're in a competition," Shizune said, shaking her head fondly as Naruto polished off another skewer.
Naruto grinned. "Gotta stay fueled up. Can't train on an empty stomach. Besides. It's not like I'm making a mess, right?"
Shzune snorted softly. "Your manners could use some work."
Naruto huffed. "Yeah, yeah, I get it. I'll slow it down."
As the two softly bickered and joked, Tsunade smirked faintly, remaining mostly silent and letting the moment settle.
For the first time in years, she wasn't drowning in her own regrets. She was watching something new, something real.
Then, a familiar voice broke the peace. "Alright, kid, fun's over."
Naruto turned mid-bite to see Jiraiya approaching, his presence as casual as ever.
Tsunade sighed and scowled. "Here to take your little prodigy from me now?"
Jiraiya chuckled, leaning against the table. "Can't let you hog him all day, can I? Unless... He managed to warm that frozen heart and convinced you to-"
"Don't get ahead of yourself, perv," Tsunade said sharply. "I've already heard enough about Konoha from him."
Jiraiya chuckled and motioned for Naruto to follow. "Come on, brat, time to head back. Lady Tsunade can get back to her sulking."
Naruto stood, offering Tsunade a small nod. "Thanks for your time, Tsunade."
Tsunade gave a dismissive wave of the hand, and Shizune offered him a gentle smile as they departed.
Jiraiya nudged Naruto's side as they walked, and Naruto rolled his eyes.
"What?" Naruto said.
Jiraiya smirked. "Don't get too attached."
Naruto glanced at Jiraiya as they made their way out.
Obviously, his sensei found something he didn't like.
Line break.
Naruto followed him as they walked away from the restaurant.
Once they were far enough, Jiraiya's usual easygoing demeanor shifted. "Listen closely, Naruto. Kabuto isn't here alone."
Naruto's brow furrowed. "There are more Oto-nin?"
Jiraiya nodded. "A group. And more than that, Tsunade has been in contact with them."
Naruto stopped in his tracks. "She has?"
"Yeah. They had some kind of chat before we even arrived here... They used a forbidden jutsu to spook her, the same one they used to kill Lord 3rd." Jiraiya said grimly.
Naruto scowled. "They threatened her?"
"No. This jutsu brings back the dead, if only for a time." Jiraiya responded.
"Woah, what?!" Naruto exclaimed in surprise. "A jutsu that brings the dead back?!"
Jiraiya gave him the hush gesture and nodded. "Keep it down, kid."
"R-Right. Sorry... That's just..-"
"I know. Listen," Jiraiya said, taking the boy by the shoulders and leading him away. "Right now, Tsunade is at her lowest. The anniversary of her brother's death passed a few days ago, so they are probably leveraging this jutsu against her... Offering something forbidden in exchange for her skill in medical ninjutsu."
Naruto's fists clenched at this. These were the people responsible for Konoha's state, for the death of Hiruzen.
Naruto turned to Jiraiya, and the man saw burning determination in his eyes... And something a little more dangerous. "How do we fuck up their plans?"
Jiraiya gave a slight smirk at that. "Listen carefully, pottymouth. Their goal is to capture Shizune if she comes to the 'wrong' decision. If they succeed, they'll have leverage over her regardless of what decision she makes. I'm glad you are getting along with them, cause I'm gonna need you to protect them both while I outmaneuver Kabuto. Understood? Your mission is to keep Shizune out of harm's way."
Naruto nodded. "And we keep them in the dark?"
Jiraiya nodded. "They haven't told us of Kabuto. If they knew we knew, there's no telling how they'd react."
Naruto nodded, though, there was hesitation. "I learned a lot from them today."
"I know you did, but stay focused. This is all just to make sure they are on our side. They aren't the enemy, but until Kabuto is dealt with, they are more of a wildcard than suspected." Jiraiya said.
Naruto nodded. As much as he wanted to dispute Jiraiya's words, the recounting of how his team fell apart was still fresh. Orochimaru's story, though briefly touched upon, made him understand that these things are never as simple as he'd like them to be.
'Whatever the case, the sooner I get my hands on the ones responsible for Hiruzen's death, the better... This is perfect.'
Line break.
Meanwhile, the moment Naruto and Jiraiya disappeared down the street, the lively energy at the table seemed to drain away. Tsunade remained seated, her gaze still lingering where the two had walked off, though her expression was unreadable.
Shizune, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke up.
"Quiet tonight," she noted, her tone light but careful.
Tsunade scoffed, reaching for her cup. "Enjoy the silence while it lasts."
Shizune hesitated for a moment, then casually reached for her own drink. "He's… persistent."
Tsunade's fingers tightened around her cup, but she didn't respond.
"He has a way of getting under people's skin," Shizune continued, swirling the liquid in her glass. "Makes you notice him, even when you don't want to."
Tsunade took a slow sip, her gaze fixed on the rippling liquid. "Some people don't know when to quit."
Shizune let the words settle before adding, almost absentmindedly, "Or maybe they remind us of things we'd rather forget?"
Tsunade exhaled, setting the cup down with a little more force than necessary. "You should mind your own business, Shizune."
Shizune gave a small, knowing smile but said nothing else. The silence between them stretched, heavy and unspoken.
There was, however, a quirk to Tsunade's lips at this.
She isn't wrong, after all.

{Land of Fire: Tanzaku village: The streets of Tanzaku}
[The next day: Early morning]
The streets of Tanzaku were eerily silent in the early morning haze, the first rays of sunlight barely cutting through the mist that clung to the alleyways.
Jirobo moved with purpose, his heavy footfalls muffled against the damp earth as he surveyed his work.
The mission was simple. Turn the battlefield into a death trap. For this was the immediate route outside of the hotel.
It was decided yesterday that tomorrow would be the day they attacked, so once everything outside the hotel was secured, they'd be ready... According to Kabuto, that is.
With a grunt, he cracked his knuckles and placed his palm against the support beam of a nearby building. A slow, steady pulse of chakra weakened the structure from within, softening the foundation just enough.
One well-placed strike later, and the support splintered inward, invisible to the untrained eye but primed for collapse. If their targets fled this way, the entire building would come down on top of them.
He repeated the process at several locations, targeting key escape routes. To any outsider, the alleys still looked normal, but Jirobo knew better. The moment someone tried to use these paths, they'd be sealed inside a crumbling tomb. Tanzaku, for all its beauty, had some weak architecture.
"Tch." He scoffed, brushing debris from his fingers. "This is grunt work."
Jirobo rolled his shoulders, growling as he did so. He knew his strength was essential, but to him? This was utter bullshit. He does the heavy lifting while the others got to play their clever little games. Tayuya weaves her little illusions, Kidomaru perches on his rooftops, and Sakon and Ukon priding themselves on their dirty tricks and up-close assassinations. Meanwhile, he was expected to smash and block like a glorified laborer.
'The sooner we get this shit done, the better. I'm tired of all these damn restrictions!'
Line break.
[Sakon/Ukon pov]
Meanwhile, at the hotel, Sakon and Ukon worked in tandem, splitting apart to work faster.
They planted explosive tags in concealed spots.
"Too obvious," Sakon muttered, pulling a tag back from a doorway. "We need these where they won't see them until it's too late."
Ukon, emerging from the corner beside him, scowled. "Like here?"
Sakon gestured to the underside of a stone archway. "This here is an example." He set the explosive note and disguised it.
Ukon scoffed. "You always overthink it. Just put them where people won't see and be done with it. Camouflage exists for a reason."
Sakon shot him a glare. "You underestimate shinobi instincts. Anyone decent will spot the obvious traps if you stick them just anywhere. Hell, even a paranoid civilian with a few brain cells would spot that."
Ukon growled in irritation but conceded, watching as Sakon carefully placed another tag. "Fine, fine. But if this drags out because you wanted to be fancy, I get a say on how things get done next time. "
Sakon smirked. "Noted."
By the time they were done, the streets were laced with unseen death. Anyone making a run for it wouldn't get far.
Line break.
[Tayuya pov]
As the town stirred to life, a pair of low-ranking precinct shinobi stood near the patrol station, their shoulders slack, expressions dull with boredom. They should have been alert, scanning the streets for trouble, but nothing ever happens in a town like this, save for a few street brawls or petty theft. Most of the shinobi stationed here were glorified peacekeepers and law enforcers.
One of them yawned and checked the time before smiling. 'Fifteen more minutes before we can switch, and I can go home and sleep the day away,' He thought with joy, already visualizing his bed. 'I'm never taking a night shift again. That sucked.'
He turned to his partner to say something when a strange tone filled their ears, like the note of a soft flute.
"What's that noise? " He asked his comrade.
His comrade shook his head, confused as well. "I dunno... I... What the?"
Their vision began to blur, and their words slurred as they couldn't stay on their feet... Before they slumped against the wall, and fell asleep.
A moment later, Tayuya landed softly nearby and sneered at the sight. She'd have cut their throats under any other circumstances, but they were under a 'no bloodshed' restriction until Shizune was theirs.
'This is so lame. Even the shinobi here are fodder.' She thought as she entered the building, playing her flute and putting everyone under her spell.
Room by room, she cleared with little difficulty before finding her target. And he was ready, if only for a moment... But it wasn't even a fight. He couldn't even stand on his own two feet.
This office happens to be the one in charge of this district's patrol routes, so her goal is rather straightforward.
Sabotage.

[Kidomaru POV]
From the highest rooftop, Kidomaru crouched low, his eyes scanning the battlefield below. He had already peeked out the position he'd be using for the engagement. It has a perfect vantage point,
He tested the draw of his bow, a web-crafted arrow already notched, waiting. With a predator's patience, he marked potential kill zones.
"They won't even see it coming," he murmured, grinning.
The Sound Four were in position. The traps were set in advance. Now, all that was left was to wait for their prey to step into the web when the time was right.

[Kabuto Pov]
Kabuto stepped into the dimly lit pub, and took in the scent of aged wood and stale liquor, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on Tsunade.
She is seated in a quiet corner, her posture relaxed but her expression unreadable.
'Well, here goes nothing. Last chance for plan A,' He thought as he adjusted his glasses and braced himself.
He approached with careful steps, sliding into the seat across from her without invitation. Kabuto's gaze flickered to the untouched bottles of sake behind the counter, then back to Tsunade's steady hands wrapped around a simple cup of water.
'Water at a place like this?' He thought to himself.
"You're persistent," Tsunade muttered, swirling the water in her cup. "Didn't I tell you to fuck off already?"
Kabuto chuckled, leaning back slightly. "You did. I'm sorry to be a bother, but I just wanted to check up on you. I gave you space to consider your options... Have you changed your mind, even a little?"
She scoffed. "Wow. Your master must be desperate if you are still here, and with the balls to sit so close to me after I told you I'd kill you if I ever saw your face again. Let me make it simple for you, grunt. My answer is no. Again."
Kabuto tilted his head, casually signaling the bartender. "A drink, then? My treat. I don't mean to be a bother, I just want to talk."
Tsunade waved him off before he could order. "My water will do."
She didn't even glance at the sake bottles behind the counter. That, more than anything, worried Kabuto.
Kabuto exhaled softly. "Is it really that easy for you to turn your back on what he's offering? The Reanimation Jutsu-"
"-is a technique of control," Tsunade cut in sharply. "It doesn't bring them back. Not truly. Who would be pulling their strings? Orochimaru? You?"
Kabuto opened his mouth to retort, but Tsunade leaned forward slightly, her voice edged with quiet finality. "Tell me, how long do you think Orochimaru's control over them would last? Do you think a soul can rest when forced to exist under another's will?"
Kabuto's jaw clenched. He hadn't expected her to press him like this. She wasn't grieving, nor was she longing for the past. She was dissecting the jutsu itself, and more than that.
She saw through Orochimaru's desperation.
"My answer is no," she repeated. "And it won't change."
Kabuto's fingers twitched against the table. 'I'm not speaking to the drunken mess from before. Her clarity... The sharpness in her eyes... What the hell happened?'
The teen leaned back in his chair and sighed. "Seems you're over your grief. I'm surprised you'd actually pass up an opportunity like this... Perhaps some kind of assurance would-,"
Kabuto choked on his words slightly when Tsunade's chakra and killer intent seeped into the room. There was no outward change in her demeanor, but it was easy to see. Another word from him, and she'd really kill him right here.
'Damn her... I suppose I've done all I could to take the path with the least amount of blood,' He thought as he carefully stepped off the stool and walked out with his hands in his pockets. 'But if she wants to act like an arrogant prick, that's fine too. I've got something that'll make that attitude vanish in an instant. Just you wait, Tsunade.'
Line break.
When he made his way through the door, he stretched and took a breath, trying not to lose his temper. It would do him no good when they have a functioning back-up plan... However, he is a naturally vindictive individual, and doesn't take slights well.
The gleam in his eyes said it all. Guren could see it as he walked past and motioned for her to follow. His mindset has changed.
"We are taking Shizune, period. We've wasted enough time here." Kabuto said as they brushed through the crowd.
"She brushed you off, huh?" Guren said with an arrogant grin, yet Kabuto didn't acknowledge it. He simply scoffed.
Kabuto glared at the road ahead at that. "Tried to be nice, tried to negotiate, but not because I cared. She is dangerous. The point of taking Shizune is to neutralize her. That plan hasn't changed... But tell the Sound 4 that they have free reign to loosen the woman up before capture. We only need her alive, after all."
Guren's grin faded slightly, but aside from that, there was no change to her satisfaction and excitement. "So, what about Jiraiya?"
"He doesn't know we are even here, and Tsunade doesn't have a reason to tell him unless we present ourselves as a threat to her, which we haven't," Kabuto responded. "We keep quiet and move carefully until tomorrow. Be ready for anything"

{Land of Fire: Tanzaku Village: Village outskirts/fields}
The sound of an explosion rang out in the distance suddenly, startling small animals and turning the heads of a few travelers making their way into the village.
The source? A deep crater, its edges still smoking from the backlash of unstable chakra. And at its center lay Naruto, the boy wearing a VERY unamused expression.
A moment later, the dirt-covered Naruto clawed his way up from the pit, coughing and scowling as he shook the dust from his hair.
Shizune, who had tagged along for today, rushed over to his side. "Oh my goodness! Are you ok?!" She yelled as she helped the blonde to his feet. Yet, as she did, laughter echoed across the training grounds.
"Pfft-Hahahaha! That was priceless, kid! I told you to take it slow!" Jiraiya burst out, clutching his stomach and barely keeping himself upright as he pointed at Naruto's disheveled state. "Your face when it blew up! Oh god! Classic!"
Both Shizune and Naruto glared at the Sannin for their own reasons.
"Oh, you think that's funny? Wait til I catch you sleeping tonight. Then we'll see who's laughing," Naruto said as Shizune helped to dust him off. When she was done, he stomped his way over and Jiraiya raised his hands in defense.
"Woah, easy there, bud!" He said, still laughing. "I warned you increasing the size of the Rasengan wasn't as simple as it looked. Let's just break down what went wrong."
Naruto crossed his arms, his expression still unamused. "I Know what I did wrong already."
Jiraiya gave an amused look at this. "Oh really? Do tell."
"I pushed too much chakra into it too fast. I made it bigger, but I didn't keep the rotation tight enough. The outer shell couldn't hold together, so the chakra lost its structure and collapsed inward. Without stability, all that energy had nowhere to go, resulting in me looking like an idiot." Naruto growled out.
Jiraiya's expression quickly became something resembling pride and surprise at this. "Huh. Ok. Most people wouldn't pick up on that after just one failed attempt." He gave a lazy smirk. "But knowing the problem isn't the same as fixing it. So, Watch and learn."
"You intend to show off now?" Shizune said with crossed arms.
"Oh, let it go already. He's fine! He knew what he was doing when I told him to make it bigger. Besides. He learns through application AND visually, " Jiraiya said.
With a practiced ease, Jiraiya lifted a single hand and gathered chakra into his palm. The Rasengan formed instantly. Faster than the blonde could form his own, something the blonde took notice of instantly. However, it didn't stop at the usual size. He fed it more chakra, refining the swirling mass until it expanded, nearly doubling in size. The orb remained perfectly stable, the violent energy contained within a seamless shell.
Naruto's eyes lit up slightly. "Whoa…"
Jiraiya grinned at the reaction, but he aimed to impress. He wasn't finished.
With a shift in stance, he channeled an even greater amount of chakra into the sphere. The Rasengan expanded again, growing larger and larger before the boy's eyes until a massive spiraling construct of pure destruction was formed. Wind whipped around them as its sheer force pressed against the air.
"This," Jiraiya said, his voice steady, "is what you're working towards." He let the Rasengan dissolve and put his hands on his hips. "Excited yet?"
Naruto was practically vibrating. "Y-Yeah! Teach me already!"
Shizune's expression went from mild surprise to annoyance. 'He swayed him in an instant.' She thought with a bit of irritation.
Jiraiya smirked, satisfied. "Alright, alright. Here's your exercise for the day. It's as you said. Your problem is control. You're dumping too much chakra in all at once instead of building it up properly. That's why it blows up in your face." He gestured to Naruto's hand. "Your exercise is simple. Start with a normal Rasengan, but instead of trying to expand it right away, expand it in small increments. Increase the chakra volume bit by bit while keeping the rotation perfectly balanced. If it starts wobbling or feels unstable, scale it back and correct it before continuing."
Naruto frowned, rubbing his chin. "So, I just keep making it bigger little by little?"
Jiraiya nodded. "Exactly. You've been trying to force it all at once, which is why it blew up in your face. Instead, you're going to feed chakra into it slowly, layer by layer, keeping the balance perfect the whole time. Eventually, you'll have to get faster and faster until it's seamless. It'll also help you to form the regular version in a flash."
Naruto stared at his hand before cracking his knuckles. "Easy enough. Kinda like how I learned water walking, but... Obviously different."
Jiraiya smirked. "The bigger the Rasengan, the more precision you need. If you can make it expand smoothly without a single tremor, then you'll know you've mastered the technique. No one will wait for a giant ball of energy to hit him, let alone for you to charge it to that size."
Naruto nodded. "Alright, so the speed in which I can form it matters too. Understood."
Jiraiya chuckled. "Show me what you got, kid."
Shizune frowned with slight worry, and Jiraiya patted her back, throwing her off balance and causing her to cough with indignation.
"Relax. He's going to get this in less than a week. You'll see. Nothing to fear." The old man said.
Shizune's brow twitched at that. "I'm not concerned with his progress, I'm concerned with your method of teaching. He nearly blew himself up."
"But he didn't." Jiraiya pointed out.
Shizune's gaze burned against the side of Jiraiya's smirking face, yet he didn't flinch. Instead, he turned around with his hands on his head. "I'm gonna go get us some grub. If you want, you can tag along? I don't know what you like, so-"
"I'll stay with Naruto." She said quickly, and he shrugged.
"Alright. I'll be back!" He said before disappearing in a plume of smoke.
Shizune sighed and turned back to the blonde, watching him go right into his own little method of training.
Line break.
{Land of Fire: Tanzaku Village: Village outskirts/fields}
[1 hour later]
Jiraiya jogged over to where Shizune stood, the woman watching the blonde's progress carefully.
"Hey. I didn't know what you liked, so I-"
"Shh!" She shushed, her hand up as she watched.
Jiraiya pouted and looked past her to see Naruto and his clone balancing a Rasengan in hand.
"What is he doing?" He asked softly, handing her a bento box. "It's not getting bigger."
She shook her head. "Just watch."
Jiraiya did so, and saw Naruto and his clone agree on something... Then, one focused on rotation and the other increased the size... And it kept getting bigger and bigger before stopping at its giant form.
Jiraiya's jaw fell and he took a step back in shock while Shizune bit her nails.
"Hold it, Naruto. Hold it right there." She whispered with excitement.
Then, a ripple went through as the clone faltered, and Naruto growled. "Damn it! Keep it still!"
"What does it look like I'm trying to do! It's heavy, dammit! Make another clone to stabilize it instead of pestering me!" The clone yelled.
Naruto growled as the chakra sphere fizzled out, sending a harmless but forceful shockwave through the field. He stumbled back, his clone dispersing and the blonde gritting his teeth in frustration.
From the sidelines, Shizune had a huge smile on her face and jumped for joy. "Good job, Naruto! That was amazing!"
Naruto just waved before summoning another clone and trying again.
Jiraiya's shocked expression didn't fade, however.
'Forty minutes.. And he's this far in? Using clones in such a manner... I never-'
He pinched the bridge of his nose, yet a feeling of immense relief washed over him. 'He's going to be just fine. Thank goodness for such talent.'
The notion of him not being able to attain strength fast enough to counter the Akatsuki was something that was killing him on the inside. This here proves him wrong. Or, it at least eases his concerns.
Shizune nodded as she watched Naruto go at it again and gave a prideful smile. "I had no idea he was this resourceful... But he seems to learn so quickly. That's a rare trait."
Jiraiya sighed, but nodded as he leaned back. "It is..."
He set Naruto's bento box aside and handed Shizune her own.
Line break.
[2 hours later]
The two of them then sat and watched as Naruto went at it for the next few hours, and by dusk, Naruto had his own method of performing the larger forms of the Rasengan, but with varying results and timing.
Jiraiya had taken to writing his novel, and Shizune had gotten comfortable keeping a close eye on the blonde.
When a poof of smoke went off beside the two, Shizune jumped to her feet ready for a fight, and Jiraiya simply flinched as his toad appeared and whispered something in his ear.
Shizune looked perplexed and bashful at that and watched Jiraiya's expression become stony before he waved the little frog away and sighed.
"You seem a little jumpy there, Shizune-san." Jiraiya said in a playful tone, and Shizune slumped back onto the floor with a frown.
"Sorry about that. You can never be too careful..." She said in response, causing him to give an understanding smile and pat her back. She flinched, and he pulled away. "What did your frog friend have to tell you?"
He sighed. "That we are running out of time here in this village."
Shizune's eyes widened at that. "W-What?!"
Jiraiya nodded and gave a 'fake' depressed look. "Yup. That's right. I wasn't supposed to be gone for this long, and as things are, with the war effort, and Naruto needing to get back to his duties as a shinobi, we are out of time. We have a day... Maybe two, before we have to call it and pack up."
Shizune gave a troubled expression at this, and Jiraiya gave a satisfied expression on the side before looking back to where Naruto was training. "Alright! I think that's enough for today! You don't want to overdo it!" Jiraiya called out.
Naruto and his two clones glanced over and frowned. 'What? But I'm just getting it down!'
"Can't we wait a little longer? I'm almost there!" Naruto called out.
Jiraiya shook his head from his position and groaned as he got up from his sitting position, grunting as he cracked his back. Beside him, Shizune stood as well and brushed her clothes off.
"Thanks for helping him out, by the way." The man said to Shizune as he dusted himself off. "You're better than I am at watching over his progress."
Shizune gave a bow. "Of course. Naruto shows a ton of promise. He's a real talent."
Jiraiya nodded, watching as Naruo complained to his clones about cutting their session short. "He does... In a couple of years, he could reach...-"
"He could reach what?" Shizune inquired, leaning forward.
Jiraiya chuckled and scratched the back of his head. "Ah, nevermind. I'm stretching a bit. Too early to tell, and I don't want him getting the big head."
Naruto jogged his way over to them at this point, jacket over his shoulder and an annoyed expression. "I'm not tired."
"Well I am, you freak of nature, and you haven't eaten," Jiraiya said, chopping the boy's head.
Naruto sighed, brushing he man's hand out of his hair and bending to pick up his sealed bento box. "What's in it?"
"Sushi."
Naruto nodded and kept on walking. "Bye, Shizune. I'll see you tomorrow."
Shizune smiled and nodded. "Of course."
The woman watched them go, and she clutched her chest at the sinking feeling she was experiencing.
'Tsunade. You are running out of time.'
Line break.
Jiraiya watched the boy walk ahead and chuckled at his hunched, annoyed form.
"You upset or something?" The old man asked.
"Peeved. I almost got it down in a day," The boy said with a sigh.
Jiraiya nodded. "You... Technically did."
"With the assistance of clones," Naruto grumbled.
Jiraiya rolled his eyes. "You got the job done, and that's all that matters. There's a reason I cut the session short."
Naruto glanced at the sage and saw the serious expression on his features. "What happened?"
"Kabuto happened. He's making his move soon. I have a toad keeping up with his movements, and it just reported his pattern becoming erratic and hard to track. He and his goons are making their move, so, tomorrow, after training, I want you to stay close to Shizune." Jiraiya said.
Naruto nodded. "Tail her?"
Jiraiya shrugged. "You could. But, I did just tell her we are leaving soon, so she may be up to spending time with you after the fact."
Naruto nodded. "Ah. Ok. So, this is it then. We're killing Kabuto."
Jiraiya thought about it. "I prefer capture. We want to know where Orochimaru is, after all. Everyone else is fair game."
Naruto listened to Jiraiya's plans well into the night as they entered the hotel and got settled in. They weren't going to make this easy on the sound ninja.
Line break.
{Land of Fire: Konohagakure: Council chambers}
The council chamber was tense, filled with the muffled rustling of papers, impatient sighs, and the occasional sharp whisper.
Inoichi, Shikaku, Ibiki, and the two elders were the ones present.
It wasn't even the actual chamber, but a stand-in until the rest of the building is repaired from the... Root incident.
The war was progressing at a steady rate, the nobiliy have been a pain in the ass, waiting for the Namikaze heir to return, the court preparing to elect a new Daimyo are here, and representatives from other villages who wish to eiher join or profit from this war have arrived.
Shikaku Nara sat at the central table, fingers steepled as he listened to yet another report from the front lines. It had been over a week and a half since Jiraiya had left to retrieve Tsunade, and impatience was setting in.
Homura tapped his cane against the floor, his expression sour. "Has there been any word from-"
"No," Shikaku cut off, not wanting to hear it.
Koharu Utatane, despite her diminished role, cleared her throat. "The Fire Daimyo is dead, and the political structure of the Land of Fire is still shifting. We are vulnerable. Without strong leadership, we will be seen as weak. Jiraiya should have returned by now.
"We all understand the urgency," Shikaku responded, "but appointing a Hokage without the right candidate will do more harm than good. This war has already complicated the balance of power within Konoha."
Across the table, Inoichi Yamanaka tapped a finger against one of the reports."Takigakure has reached out with a proposal for an alliance. They see an opportunity in Suna's weakness and are willing to replace them as our primary partner. In exchange, they offer military support and resources."
"And what do they want in return?" The ANBU Commander's voice rang out. "Surely it isn't to be in our good graces alone."
Inoichi hesitated. "...Influence. Access to trade routes once controlled by Suna. They also propose a military pact, one that benefits us both... at least on paper."
"On paper," Shikaku repeated, his sharp gaze flicking toward Inoichi. "And off paper? What's their real game?... Anyone?"
Silence spread around the chamber as advisors mulled over the implications.
"Taki is still seeking revenge for their lost Daimyo and officials during the invasion," Inoichi added. "They aren't just looking for opportunity; they have a personal stake in seeing Suna crushed. They want to replace them as our ally, and unlike Suna, they are willing to make more... Beneficial concessions."
"Another thing... Suna's forces are changing tactics," the ANBU Commander continued. "They're avoiding direct confrontations and focusing on destabilization efforts. They've attempted to harass trade routes near the contested border with Takigakure, but they aren't proving effective. Takigakure has retaliated aggressively, countering every attempted raid with swift and decisive force. Their hostility toward Suna has been open, and they are eager to secure an alliance with us. Inoichi's words ring true."
Koharu exhaled, her fingers interlaced in front of her. "Whether or not we have a Hokage, we cannot ignore the value of this offer. The village still needs leadership, and we are gathered here to make decisions in the absence of that leadership. Given the stakes, this is one decision we can act upon without waiting for Jiraiya's return.
Inoichi sighed, his fingers tapping lightly against the report in front of him. "I won't deny the logic in Koharu's words. We were assembled to ensure the village keeps functioning despite the absence of a Hokage. If we delay too long, we may lose momentum."
Shikaku shook his head. "I understand that, but my concern isn't just about moving too slowly. If we move too quickly, we risk overextending ourselves and falling into a political trap before Tsunade even takes the seat. Takigakure is being opportunistic, and we should be wary of that. The real concern is ensuring we don't rush into an agreement that may have unforeseen consequences. We need more information before making a binding decision."
The room fell silent at that before Shikaku straightened. "We will continue monitoring Takigakure's movements and Suna's shifting tactics. Until Jiraiya returns, we do not make any binding agreements. Reinforce our positions and keep a close eye on Takigakure's diplomatic efforts. That is the priority."
With that, the meeting was adjourned.
Line break.
[3 hours later]
Stepping out of the council chamber, Inoichi took a deep breath, relishing the cool evening air.
Aside from the annoying sounds of construction going on behind him, it was good to see clear skies. He could finally breathe.
Beside him, Shikaku exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulders.
"That could have gone worse," Inoichi muttered, hands in his pocket as he strode forward. "But I still don't feel good about it."
Shikaku grunted. "To tell you the truth, neither do I.. I think Taki was a good choice... I just... We can't have any surprises. Not before she-"
"No need. Save it for the council chambers. We're outta there." Inoichi said with a smirk as he waved toward a passerby.
They walked in silence for a few moments, leaving the stiff formality of the council behind.
The village streets were as bustling as usual, as though just a month prior, this place hadn't been sacked from the inside... Well, no. You could see it clearly, but these people were strong. They survived the Ninetails. Now that was devastation.
Inoichi sighed. "I can't stop thinking about our kids. They're still young, but the way things are heading… I worry they won't have the luxury of growing up at their own pace...The war, I mean."
Shikaku glanced at his friend, his usual lazy demeanor hardening at the subject. "Yeah… I think about that too. Shikamaru's sharp, but I don't want him to see the battlefield this soon. He should be worried about troublesome things like trivial genin work, not strategizing for survival."
Inoichi chuckled, though it lacked humor. "Troublesome, huh? That's one way to put it. Ino is trying to grow up fast but she's still a kid at heart. It's why this is good. A scapegoat that prevents us from involving our next generation. The more allies, the better."
Shikaku nodded, looking up at the now brightening sky. "I see where you're coming from. If we do our jobs right, they won't see the battlefield. Period."
Inoichi nodded. Yet, both men knew that this was all talk. Suna was one war out of many they knew would come afterward.
It's only a matter of time.
Line break.
{Land of Fire: Tanzaku village: The Azura Grand}
Jiraiya leaned against the wooden railing of their hotel's balcony, enjoying the cool morning breeze. Below, the streets of Tanzaku Village stirred to life, merchants setting up shop and early risers moving about their business. He took a slow breath, scanning the town for anything out of place.
Naruto was behind him, crouched near the balcony entrance, adjusting his sandals.
"Alright, I'm ready to go," Naruto said, standing up and rolling his shoulders.
Jiraiya gave an affirming nod. "Good. Remember, we don't know what to expect today, so it's best to just be on guard. Don't go picking a fight until I get there, understood?"
Naruto sighed. "Yeah, sure. I remember... And what if Tsunade decides she isn't coming home?"
Jiraiya shrugged. "We step aside and let things play out if it gets to that point. This is what we call careful investment. I'd rather not risk my little prodigy student for hers if we get nothing in return."
Naruto rolled his eyes. "Yeah, sure. I'm not letting Shizune get captured. I'll be seeing ya,"
The boy said before launching himself off the balcony and traversing his way through the tall rooftops.
Jiraiya groaned at the boy's actions and decided it was best to just go with the flow today.
Line break.
[1 hour later]
[Jiraiya POV]
When he arrived at the establishment, his toad had told him she was frequenting, a high-end breakfast lounge overlooking the main district, Jiraiya spotted Tsunade seated in the outdoor dining area.
A bottle of sake sat untouched beside her tea, and a small plate of dango rested within reach. She looked utterly at ease, as if she had no burdens at all.
Odd.
Jiraiya strode forward with his usual swagger and put on a smile. "My, my, Princess Tsunade," he greeted, pulling out a chair and plopping down. "Didn't think I'd see you up so early."
Tsunade didn't look at him immediately. She took a sip of her tea and exhaled softly. "What do you want, Jiraiya?"
Jiraiya chuckled, waving over a server. "Straight to the point, huh? Can't an old friend just drop in for one last drink? I never got my piece in since, well, Naruto stole the show last time we really talked."
"And botched it at that," the woman snorted before she finally met his gaze, her expression unreadable. "You're here about Konoha. About me taking the hat."
Jiraiya accepted the Dango the server placed in front of him. "Well, yeah. Figured you'd need more time to think, but Konoha doesn't exactly have time, and my student and I can't stay forever."
Tsunade sighed, setting her cup down. "You're too impatient."
Jiraiya scoffed. "You're too good at avoiding the conversation."
She chuckled, picking up the bottle of sake and pouring for both of them. "Fine, then. Let's talk."
Jiraiya blinked at first before he observed her carefully.
She was being… uncharacteristically accommodating.
He took the cup and downed it in one go, sighing in satisfaction. "Ahh, now that hit the spot."
Tsunade smiled faintly, watching him. "So, what's the hurry? Afraid the village will crumble without me?"
Jiraiya poured himself another cup, keeping his expression light. "I'm afraid of what happens if you say no."
Tsunade leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. "And if I say yes?"
Jiraiya gave her a long look, then grinned. "Then I'll be the happiest man alive."
She laughed softly, shaking her head. "Relieved, you mean?"
"Same thing," Jiraiya responded. "Tell me, what did you and Naruto talk about the other day?"
"Many things... His views are naive, but not all bad... And I learned that he is depressed, like me." She said, her voice softening.
Jiraiya nodded. "He lost what he considered family in the invasion, so... Yeah. He's a little broken right now... Did he warm that icy heart of yours?"
"No. It didn't. But, I did find what I was looking for in him, so there's that," The woman said, leaning back.
"What did you find?" Jiraiya asked, leaning forward.
Tsunade's eyes narrowed. "Someone worthy of carrying on my grandfather's legacy."
Line break.
From a rooftop at a safe distance, Kabuto and Guren observed the exchange in silence.
Guren's brows furrowed as she watched the two talk. Neither had expected a sudden visit from the Sannin, but it was still good. Very good.
"Looks like we don't need to divide our attention. They are both here." Kabuto said quietly.
Guren nodded. "Yeah. So, I can-"
"NO. I still need you here. Spying on two of them is a two-man job. Just direct the sound four to initiate when ready." Kabuto said.
Guren resisted the urge to groan and clicked on her earpiece.
Line break.
[Tayuya pov]
Tayuya crouched on a sturdy branch, arms folded, her scowl deepening as she stared down at the training grounds below.
The rustling leaves provided some cover, but the morning sun was already warming the air, making her position more uncomfortable by the second. Watching the blonde brat arrive at the training area and start his little warm-up session was not how she wanted to spend her day.
Shizune wasn't even present, yet she was tasked to watch Naruto anyway, which was pissing her off.
Tayuya rolled her eyes. "Tch. Useless. I got the babysitting gig."
She reached for the small communication device tucked into her sleeve, pressing it lightly. "Target is still at the training grounds. He's making a mess of some jutsu crap. No signs of deviation from expected behavior."
Kidomaru's voice crackled through the device. [You sound thrilled. Enjoying the view?]
Tayuya scowled. "Shut the hell up. This is a waste of my damn time and talent. Let me know if anything actually happens."
She cut the transmission and refocused on Naruto.
"I hate this job."
Meanwhile, Naruto gave a sigh as he finished his stretching... All while trying not to react to the individual watching him.
Shizune told him she had errands to run before she could meet him again, so he figured he'd get himself set up.
Obviously this isn't an option anymore. The shinobi watching him... Their chakra is... Strange. It reminds him of Sasuke... No, Anko. When her curse mark was unstable... Yeh. That's accurate.
'Whoever is watching me has one of those things attached to them. If they have eyes on me, then Shizune is being watched too... can't stay here.'
Line break.
[Kidomaru pov]
Meanwhile, Kidomaru was perched atop a high vantage point, his six arms lazily adjusting his scope as he followed another target. Shizune.
His irritation mirrored Tayuya's as he watched her navigate through a bustling market, pausing every so often to inspect different herbs and medical supplies.
"This chick is just meandering through some stuffy market," he muttered into the communicator. "I swear, if I have to watch her haggle over another damn root, I'm gonna lose it. Can't I just shoot her already? I know where to aim to make it-"
[No!] Guren's voice cut in, filtered through his device. [Keep your eyes on her only. She'll make her way on her own. patience.]
Kidomaru sighed, shifting his position. "Yeah, yeah. But her elaborate shopping trip is taking too long."
[Stick to the script, Kidomaru. This is it. Everything is going to plan, so... Patience.] Kabuto's voice filtered through, his voice calm.
Kidomaru's eyes narrowed, but the thought of a potential reward for putting up with this was keeping him grounded.
Line break.
[Jiraiya pov]
Jiraiya set his glass down and sighed after having taken a good swig from his drink.
"I had no idea," Tsunade whispered.
Jiraiya gave a chuckle at her reaction. He'd just gotten done explaining the full extent of Naruto's recent hardships... He figured she needed a full perspective on the boy's situation, and what he has forced himself to swallow coming here.
"Yup. More like you than you thought, am right?" Jiraiya said.
He watched her clutch her necklace, her brows furrowed... but there was no response.
Jiraiya didn't need one. He let it sink in. His eyes drifted behind him, looking in the general direction of where Kabuto and Guren were hiding, but not directly at them. He played it off, waving at a server to clean the table before turning toward Tsunade.
"Well, I'll leave you to your devices. I can't make you come with us, but we can't stay here either. We leave tomorrow night to-"
"Why at night?" She asked.
He shrugged. "To give you time."
Tsunade sighed and rubbed her temple. "I don't want to be Hokage."
"To be expected," Jiraiya nodded.
"And I don't want to fight in another war either." She growled.
He nodded again. "Nor do I. But we didn't start this war, nor did we provoke one by sticking our nose someplace it doesn't belong. This time, we are justified in defending ourselves."
Tsunade felt like smashing the table. Her thoughts were running wild and her heart was being torn in every direction.
"I don't want any more regrets, Jiraiya. None." She said.
Jiraiya felt like he was on a razor's edge, so he gave a slow nod and folded his hands, listening.
"If I take this position, it will not be permanent. I'm only warming the seat until someone worthy takes it from me." She said, twirling the glass in her hand, yet gripping it hard enough to crack the glass.
"You mean, you are keeping it warm for the kid?"
"Who else for, Jiraiya?!" She growled, her glass shattering in her hand.
Jiraiya raised his hands, but couldn't help the guilty and relieved smile that came upon him. "Of course! Sorry!"
She grunted and glared at the door, and Jiraiya followed her gaze and stiffened. She's looking at where Kabuto and Guren can be felt.
"Hang on. You-"
"I promised that little shit that if I caught him around here again, I'd kill him, and yet he still stalks me as though I'm some fucking amateur," She growled.
Jiraiya sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Right. Well, how about we-"
"You knew of him, didn't you." She accused, crossing her arms.
"I didn't want to alarm you. I wanted to trust you too, so I didn't bring it up." He said carefully.
She nodded and looked down at the broken glass on the table. "So, what not?"
Jiraiya smirked. "We continue to act natural until my little student gives the signal."
"What signal?" She asked.
Jiraiya's smile broadened. "Just keep your eye on them. That will tell you all you need to know."
Line break.
[Kabuto POV]
From a restaurant nearby, Kabuto and Guren observed the exchange with quiet interest. Guren crossed her arms, her gaze flicking from Jiraiya's seemingly uneasy posture to Tsunade's annoyed expression.
"What do you think?" she murmured.
Kabuto adjusted his glasses. "I don't know. They seem... Off. She seems pissed as usual, but Jiraiya isn't reacting as I'd expect."
Guren frowned. "You think they're planning something?"
"Not sure. Regardless, so long as they don't interfere with Shizune's capture, it doesn't matter," Kabuto muttered.
"Eyes on the target?"
"She's making her way toward the hotel now," Kidomaru's voice murmured through the device. "No deviation in movement. She's ours."
Jirobo's voice crackled through the line next. "The room is rigged as well. We are ready."
"Very good. Very, very good. Let us know when you've hit your mark." Kabuto said as he entered the lounge.
Line break.
Kidomaru nodded as his gaze followed her like a hawk.
There weren't any precinct shinobi in the area. A good thing considering what was to occur soon.
His gaze swept the rooftops one last time, making sure he was in the clear before he watched as Shizune entered the building and smirked.
"She's in." He said.
Line break.
From the inside, a disguised Sakon/Ukon watched as Shizune walked through the doors of the hotel and smiled.
She went over what seemed to be a list, when she stopped suddenly and frowned.
Sakon/Ukon stiffened, and Kidomaru, watching with limited view, growled.
"No! For fuck's sake, no more stalling!" Kidomaru hissed from his spot.
She seemed to contemplate something before shrugging and making her way further in, signing in at the desk and moving down the hall.
Sakon let out a sigh of relief. "I swear, I'm gonna enjoy breaking this bitch for being such a pain."
Shizune traversed the upper floor of the room before being stopped suddenly.
"Shizune-san! Over here!" A civilian called out.
Shizune stiffened and sighed before turning to address the woman and the child she had in hand.
From around the corner, a Jirobo, disguised as a fat merchant, rolled his eyes. 'Here we fucking go again.
The woman and child greeted Shizune happily, thanking her for healing her child, and seemingly asking for some kind of advice on how to keep future fevers down. Shizune was slightly flustered at first, but engaged regardless, handing and writing a list for the woman before moving on, making her way to the room.
After fiddling with the key, Jirobo's smirk broadened. 'Finally.'
Shizune stepped into the lit room, appearing tired and ready to put her feet up. The door clicked shut behind her, and before she could take another step, webbing snapped toward her from the walls.
She reacted instantly, dashing onto the ceiling and launching herself toward the couch. A fraction slower, and she'd have been fully huffed before feeling thin strands still clinging to her left arm. Sticky. Restrictive.
Before she could react further, the door behind her exploded inward.
Jibo came crashing through the wooden wall separating the dressing room, splinters flying in every direction, his massive fist already in motion.
Shize bent low, the punch whistling just over her head, before she swatted the follow-up away, barely avoiding a blow to the chest. In a flash, she threw a flurry of senbon his direction, making him back off and dash to her flank as she cut her arm loose.
Her body dropped low when he reached her again, slipping under Jirobo's grasp by inches. In the same motion, she struck at Jirobo's ribs, using the bigger man's momentum against her, yet Jirōbō barely budged. He clasped both his hands together and brought them down, forcing Shizune to dash out of the way. His fists blew apart the coffee table, fracturing the ground.
Jirobo growled in annoyance and charged the woman again, his hands glowing with chakra.
"Shatter Palm Jutsu!" He yelled, aiming to crush her outright. Shizune darted low, slipping between his legs just as his attack obliterated the wall behind her, causing her neighbors to jump in fear and rush out of their room.
In a single, fluid motion, she twisted and drove her heel into his back, sending him stumbling forward, and she landed gracefully, already repositioning herself toward the newly created exit.
The moment he got his footing, he saw the neighbor's door wide open, and he growled. She was making a break for it.
Dashing down the hall, the moment she turned the corner, she saw it. The walls. They were warped in and closed off in a mess of debris.
Jirobo had been preparing this from the start. There was no way through.
He pivoted. Back the way she came, but Sakon and Ukon stood in the exit, arms crossed. Waiting.
"Now, now. Behave, and we'll make this painless." Sakon said with a sadistic smile.
"Don't lie, brother. You know damn well we're making this nice and slow." Ukon said.
Shizune exhaled sharply, already shifting her stance. "Who are you?!"
Jirobo cracked his neck and adjusted his wrists. "Come quietly and we'll make it painless."
She gave an angry scowl at that. "I'm giving you one chance to walk away now!"
Beside her, a door opened, and she saw the mother and child peek out, only for Shizune to shoo them away.
"You have two options, bitch." Sakon said.
Ukon gave her an apologetic smile as his eyes drifted toward the door with the civilians inside. "Either you come with us nice and easy, and no one else gets hurt, or you make it difficult, and drag the whole place into our little game."
Shizune glared. "Do that, and you'll bring the entire law enforcement down on you."
Jirobo scoffed and started walking forward. "We don't have time for this. I'm taking her now."
In a flash, Shizune flicked her wrist, sending a rapid volley of senbon toward Jirobo's face. His eyes widened as he barely jerked his head aside, one of the needles grazing his cheek before embedding into the wall behind him.
His momentary hesitation was all she needed.
Shizune lunged, a chakra scalpel flaring to life in her hand, and she slashed at Jirobo's exposed throat, and at the last second, he roared and flung himself backward, her blade missing by mere inches.
Sakon wasted no time, dashing past Jirobo and straight into Shizune, who met him head-on. She weaved through his strikes with sharp precision, her movements fluid and efficient, batting away his strikes and dodging what she couldn't redirect.
Sakon's aggression escalated as he aimed to backhand her across the face, only for her to catch his wrist, chop his rib, and follow up with a kick to the chest, sending him rolling back.
Ukon caught his brother, and growled. "Don't go rushing in without me, you reckless dolt!"
Both exchanged a quick glance with Jirobo, a silent understanding passing between the three of them. Then, with perfect synchronization, Sakon and Ukon lunged forward in unison, their movements honed by years of fighting together.
Shizune barely had a moment to react before they closed in, one attacking high, the other low, forcing her onto the defensive.
Sakon struck first, his fists moving in a flurry of rapid jabs aimed at her chest and face. Shizune deflected, her hands a blur as she parried his strikes with sharp, efficient movements.
She flipped back just as Ukon aimed a sweeping kick at her legs, narrowly avoiding being swept off her feet.
She retaliated with a counterstrike, swatting Ukon's charging fist down and driving her elbow into his face, sending him skidding back a few feet.
Before she could press the advantage, Sakon came at her from her right, jumping off the wall and sending a kick down at her from a strange angle.
Eyes widening, Shizune bent and leaned to the side, narrowly slipping beneath the assault.
Sakon smirked, his curse mark activating, and he managed to close the distance and strike her in the chest, causing her eyes to widen in pain as the wind was temporarily knocked from her. This allowed for him to send a flurry of hooks and jabs at her face before spinning into a side kick, sending her crashing into the artificial wall Jirobo had set up earlier.
She gasped in pain and wiped the blood from her mouth, her eyes narrowing as the three slowly closed the distance.
She clenched her teeth and braced herself, her mind racing as she assessed the situation. She couldn't afford to keep letting them dictate the pace of battle. If she was going to stand a chance, she had to disrupt their rhythm.
Feinting a stagger, she let her knees buckle slightly, baiting Jirobo into charging once again. The moment he took the bait, she twisted on her heel and dashed toward him instead of away, closing the distance in a blink. The surprise in his eyes was brief before she delivered a vicious palm strike to his jaw, snapping his head back and momentarily stunning him.
Before she could capitalize, Sakon was already moving, his curse-enhanced speed allowing him to slip past her defenses. He aimed at grabbing her face, but she grabbed his wrist and ducked from Jirobo's swing of his fist, the larger boy accidentally hitting Sakon and sending him rolling back and growling in annoyance.
Ukon was already in motion, trying to catch her from behind, but she anticipated the maneuver, twisting her body and landing a sharp spinning kick to his side, sending him back.
Jirobo scowled, realizing she wasn't as easy to take down as anticipated.
He charged again, sending a devastating punch toward the woman, only for Shizune to vanish at the last second, letting his fist smash through the immediately hacked and slashed at his side with a poisoned scalpel before dashing back when he ripped his hand out and smashed the ground she was just standing looked at her scalpel and saw how bent it was before glancing back at him, noticing the black marks spreading across the half she struck at.
Meanwhile, Sakon and Ukon sighed and merged together once again Sakon becoming the primary. As Jirobo went at Shizune, he clicked his ear piece and spoke."Tell me you have a shot already."[Naturally, a voice responded.
Another kick to the jaw sent Jirobo stumbling back, and he clenched his fists in rage, having had enough. "Fuck this! No more holding back!"
Jirobo's muscles tensed as dark lines snaked across his skin, enhancing his already massive frame without fully transforming. His strength surged, and he rolled his shoulders, testing his enhanced form, her eyes widening at the sight.'W-What am I looking at?'"Jirobo," Sakon spoke, stepping forward. "There's no need-""Don't! I'm not gonna kill her. I'm just gonna soften her up a bit." He sid with a vicious sneer, adjusting his neck and getting into a readied 's eyes narrowed as she looked for a way past them. 'The grey one. He merged with himself? Or was that a clone?'
Jirobo took a step forward, and just as he lunged, a sharp whistle cut through the air.
Shizune's hair stood on end, and well before she could think, she was gone in a flash, and an explosive blast of wind and debris caused Jirobo to stop and Sakon to look away.
She was hit from out of nowhere, and screams were heard from the room she crashed into, having been smashed through the wall. He stood in shock for a moment, his curse mark fading as his fists trembled at his sides. Then, his lips curled into a sneer.
"Told you to calm down," Sakon said as he peeked into the room to see a couple cowering in the corner and Shizune's form slumped against the wall, a gaping hole in her waist."Ooh. That's brutal. You sure she'll survive that?" Sakon asked.[She'll live] Kidomaru felt his frustration beginning to boil over as his bloodlust surged. His gaze snapping toward the terrified couple in the corner, his muscles tensed, and for a moment, he considered taking his anger out on them instead.
"Kidomaru, what the fuck!" Jirobo growled.
["You were being slow and loud. It was either that or watch you tear the building apart and undo Tayuya's work. Which did you prefer?"] Kidomaru's voice crackled through the comms, his amusement dripping through the line.
Jirobo growled, kicking a chunk of debris across the room. "If the trap you set had been more effective, I wouldn't have had to-"
["Yeah, yeah, Just get her patched up already. You know the boss wants her alive and ready for transport."]
Jirobo scoffed and turned away, stomping down, glared at the door, and threw his hands up. "You gonna let me do the heavy lifting now, brute?!"
There was no answer, and Ukon groaned as he split off from his brother. "Let's just get this over with."Sakon nodded as Ukon went to check Shizune, and he glanced at the cowering civilians and gave a sinister smirk. "What're you looking at, huh? This is what happens when you skip out on your debts, so stay in line!"
The couple shrunk further, and Sakon laughed at their forms.
"Sakon!"
"Ok! Geez!"
Sakon touched his earpiece and smirked. "Mission accomplished. She's ours."
Line break.
[Kabuto POV]
Kabuto let out a breath and slumped his shoulders visibly, the stress of things finally leaving him. "Finally." He whispered.
Guren nodded and spoke through her communicator. "Good work. Now, meet up at base. We're getting out of this place."
Line break.
[Tayuya POV]
"Fuckin' finally," She whispered, leaning back on the tree she was hiding against. She was fed up with being here.
She put her flute away and took one last glance at... The blonde?
Her eyes narrowed as he stood there, sitting still and... Looking... Directly at her.
Tayuya's eyes roamed the space before her, thinking he was surely looking at something in her general direction, but when he glared and put up the middle finger, she nearly choked on her own saliva, and next thing you know, he poofed out of existence.
"The fuck?!" She roared.
Line break.
'What the hell Tayuuya?! Not in the comms!" Ukon hissed while carrying the sack he had Shizune in with his twin.
["The blonde! He's gone!"] Tayuya roared, the sound of leaves rustling on her end indicating she was on the move.
[Now how did you fuck that up? He was literally in front of you the entire time.] Kidomaru's voice cut in.
[What do you mean by him being gone?] Guren growled.
[He was a fucking clone! He was never even there!] Tayuya yelled.
Sakon stifled a laugh at the panic in her voice. "Ok, calm down. We have our target, so just get back to base. It doesn't matter."
[Agreed. Just stay on track and keep a low profile.] Kabuto said.
Jirobo kicked the front doors to the emergency exit open and was about to step out when a blast of wind sent him flying past the twin curse users, the brute rolling and skidding with a growl.
The twins stared at Jirobo before slowly turning their heads back to a very pissed Naruto.
The blonde closed the door behind him, kicking it closed with his foot before strolling forward and scanning the three with his eyes.
No one said a word for a long moment before Ukon spoke through the comms.
"Found him."
Line break.
End chapter.
{A/N}
Long time no see, guys. Sorry for the sudden absence. I was finishing up on dealing with insurance, and trying to write this chapter through was really difficult. It didn't turn out the way I wanted, but I've held off for too long, so it is what it is.
Samuel Santillan chapter 35 . Jan 27
I loved the chapter.
Tsunade is very honest and direct in saying what she thinks without holding back, Naruto is too, it must be the Uzumaki blood in both of them that makes them both so direct.
The good thing is that there were no bad intentions in Tsunade's statements, only truths that cannot be ignored and still affect Naruto even if he doesn't realize it.
I think this arc will really be very important for the healing of Naruto and Tsunade.
By the way, what movies will you put in the story? I hope there are the one from the land of snow, the one from the bonds where Amaru appears and the one from Princess Shion.
By the way, Naruto is going to get promoted to chunin, right? There's also something I wonder, Jiriaya will take Anruto on a training trip, that's good, it will teach him a lot, but now Naruto is the heir of the Yondaime and he has more responsibilities, so he can't be far from the village, and he would also stop his career and Naruto wouldn't be able to become a jonin, and I think he has the ability to do so in a few years.
[I've had plenty of time to think about the movies, and the Land of Snow is a good one. And yes, Naruto will be getting promoted. I have a solution for the heritage thing too.]
throwaway9999 chapter 34 . Feb 26
been holdin off on reviewin until i got caught up, but man ive been hooked since chapter 2 lmao. for a first fanfic this is pretty damn good so far, and im really enjoying the changes made to neji and hinata's dynamic, and really everything to do with hinata overall. im a naruhina truther, so seeing others actually agree that theyd like to see these two together here makes me v happy, cause the agenda must be pushed. but as far as the fic goes, im wonderin if naruto is gonna come into contact with kurama soon? surely him being so good at fire style despite it "just being there" has something to do with the fox right?
throwaway9999 chapter 35 . Feb 26
oh and depending on if you cant decide on a pairing, i do remember you saying something about 2 at most, so id recommend hinata and temari. i recently started reading a fic where he's arranged to marry both thanks to his heritage being released as well as suna needing to make peace post konoha crush. ik things are different here but it could be interesting
[He'll meet Kurama real soon, and you have the right idea regarding the fire release, but it isn't just that. The Temari pairing isn't impossible. I like the idea a lot.]
