Welcome back to The Injustice Wars. Last time, Batman and Blaze had a slight conversation about why she allowed Batman to pick the away team for this particular mission. Her reason? Just in case Darkblood tries to corrupt Dick Grayson when they call him, she wanted to make sure he was surrounded by people who know, love, and respect him so they can bring him back from corruption. Don't want to lose him like they did Doctor Fate after all. And shortly after that, they arrived at Nanda Parbat, and are welcomed in. So, what will they learn in the hidden city? Read on to discover...
(Our scene opens a few moments after the last one ended. Blaze and her team are seated in some kind of meditation chamber, where The Master who welcomed them into Nanda Parbat now prepares to open dialogue with them)
The Master: I sense you are confused about something. Please, let me enlighten you.
Blaze: Yes, I slightly am. How did you know my name? How did you know we were coming?
The Master: Friends of your past informed me. The Rhymer in particular.
Blaze: (Stunned) Etrigan's spirit told you about us?
The Master: He was one, yes. The Guardian of the Green spoke of you as well.
Batman: Swamp Thing?
Harley Quinn: I knew Swampy was still on our side!
Blaze: Well, that certainly answers my questions.
The Master: I am pleased to hear that. Then, perhaps it is time we get to the matter at hand.
Blaze: Agreed. We have come seeking the Deadman.
The Master: The Deadman I knew has finally moved on. Though, the mantle must always be filled. And the current holder is one close to each of you. (Points out Harley Quinn) A friend. (Points out Deathstroke) A peer. (Points out Red Hood) A rival. (Points out Batgirl and Starfire) A lover. (Points out Batman) A son.
Batman: Yes, indeed. We seek Dick Grayson.
The Master: Very well.
(With that, The Master closes his eyes for a moment, as if to think about something. As he does, Blaze strangely decides to follow suit, as if this will help her call Dick Grayson from the ether. Shortly after this, the room suddenly goes cold, some of the candles illuminating the room go out, and in the smoke from the still warm wicks one can briefly see a familiar form, one not seen alive in this world for a very long time. At this moment, both The Master and Blaze open their eyes again)
The Master: He is here.
Blaze: I... I can... I can sense it... Does anyone else feel that?
Batman: (Trying to hide his teary eyes) I can...
The Master: You will understand, he who holds the mantle of Deadman will need a host to speak.
John Constantine: And that's where I come in. Tell old Dicky he can speak through me.
The Master: He has already heard you.
(And sure enough, the form that appears in the smoke is now clear to us the reader. It is indeed Dick Grayson, still clad in his Nightwing suit. Hearing that John Constantine is willing to be a host, Dick Grayson enters his body, and soon enough, the entire room is looking at John Constantine, just as he speaks in a voice not his own, his mannerisms different, better matching the first Robin.)
Dick Grayson: (To Batman) Hey, Bruce. Been a while, hasn't it?
(Batman is so overwhelmed by emotion at this point, that he doesn't even care who sees, he just reaches out and embraces the body possessed by his first sidekick. Naturally everyone in the room is stunned by this, but it doesn't go on very long, as Batman just steps back, teary eyed)
Batman: Too long, Dick.
Dick Grayson: (Looking around the room) I see the whole gang is here.
Deathstroke: Been way too long kid. Everybody's been missing your wit out here.
Starfire: More than that, Slade Wilson.
Dick Grayson: Hey, Kori. (Sees Batgirl) Babs.
Batgirl: It's good to hear your voice again, Dick.
Dick Grayson: Good to hear yours again too. All of you, surprisingly. (Turns to Starfire) I hear you've got another guy in your life.
Starfire: This has turned the awkward.
Dick Grayson: Hey, I'm not mad. Not even slightly, I'm just glad you haven't been so hung up over me that you didn't put yourself out there. As far as I'm concerned, you and Belial have my blessing to keep this going.
Red Hood: Wait, how do you know about Belial?
Dick Grayson: Kind of hard to miss the presence of Anubis in the spirit world, Jason. (Looking to Blaze) But I'm guessing this isn't a social call.
Blaze: As fun as this reunion for the rest of you, Dick is right. We came to seek you on something.
Dick Grayson: This is about Dragnarok, isn't it?
Blaze: (Taken aback yet again) How did you...?
Dick Grayson: I met his spirit more than once. Somehow our worlds' afterlives are connected. Probably from his death if I had to guess.
Blaze: (Trying to take that in, and not really succeeding) Well... yes, yes we did come about him. I'm sure you've heard about his recent plight.
Dick Grayson: Yeah, that Darkblood guy is bad news.
Blaze: We managed to pull Drago out of him briefly, and when asked how we could restore him, he said to find you.
Dick Grayson: And good thing he did. I know just what you need to do.
(But before Dick Grayson can say what Blaze needs to do to restore Dragnarok, our scene ends for today)
And that looks like a good spot to end for now. Yes, I know, obvious cliffhanger placement is obvious. But I can't just go revealing everything right away, now can I? I wouldn't have made it ten years on this site if I just gave everything away straightaway. And truth be told, I'm still working on how to bring Dragnarok back, and since I alternate Saturday stories, I figured this gave me some time to figure it out. So, what can bring Dragnarok out of Darkblood? Tune in next time to find out! Same time... same channel!
